There was a tread on Webcams a couple if weeks ago. My son gave me a
1.3 Webcam last week. I was wondering if that was good enough to use or should
I exchange it for a higher resolution cam.

Re: [VFB] Webcam

2010-12-01 Thread Rene Zillmann
Tony, the answer is simple,
do the following math:
you have a screen resolution (on your pc), of .. say .. 1280 time 1024
pixel (that is the resolution of my pc), so, that is 1.3 Meg Pixel. That
means, with your camera (the 1.3 Mpix) you would send a full screen
video my way. If the cam has more pixel it is necessary to calculate a
smaller image for display, and this makes no sense.
this is again pure marketing stuff, they hope that ppl buy the camera
because of the higher pixel count.
I would go with the 1.3 Meg Pixel, that is sufficient.

Like with cars, if you are only allowed to go max of 55 miles, why makes
it sense to compare cars because one of them makes 90 and the other 120.
(ok, if you live in Europe and want to visit Germany - sorry, couldn't
resist..)

that's today advertising style. Because most buyer think, that you need
as much pixel as possible, the seller try to show as much as possible.

In this case it is a 3 Meg Pixel camera, and with some rhetoric tricks
they upgraded to 12.

I won't use a 12 Mpix as webcam. You do not have 3000 time 4000

But this thing has only 3, so...

Re: [VFB] Webcam

2010-12-01 Thread Anthony Spezio
The 1.3 megapixl webcam my son gave me cost 33.00 plus tax. Says it will take
stills to 5.2 Megapixl "Interpolated" whatever that means. It is also writtin
in Spanish, LOL. It does not have lights or mic. I think 6.00 is cheap for
something that will work at all. I have not gone back to the store to see about
upgrading the one my son gave me. I would think upgrading it will cost another
10 to 20.00.
Just checked the box again, it does have a Mic but no lights.

Hi Neville;

I consider myself fairly tech savy but can't quite comprehend what they're
saying.  Is the 12 megapixel rating with software enhancement and the actual
megapixel rating is thus much lower?

Either way, seems like a cheap try at getting a potentially useable webcam.

Hi Tony:

It’s ok for Skype and similar communications
where both parties see each other on their PC or laptop screens. As I said
before, they are designed to view the face of the caller and personally I don’t
think that they are good enough to view a tying sequence. I’m not saying
it is impossible, just difficult to do. I suspect that a person would have to
set it up so that the webcam pointed away from the PC operator in order to view
a fly tying sequence. Just my 2 Cents worth.

P.S. If you want to try it with Skype on a
face to face conversation, I’m willing to be your guinea pig!

There was a tread on Webcams a couple if weeks ago.
My son gave me a 1.3 Webcam last week. I was wondering if that was good
enough to use or should I exchange it for a higher resolution cam.

How would one get set up to have multiple viewers of a master output
camera? Is there software?

Yes there is. A friend here in town did a couple or three live
on-line tutorials.

I'll see what I can find out.

I just tried with my friend in montana, and he could see a fly real clear, if I
had light on it and a white background. I was watching on the inset and it
looked fine to me- plenty good for a simple tying tutorial.

How would one get set up to have multiple viewers of a master output camera?
Is there software? I'll look.

Tony,
I looked it up and it looks like a good one. One way to tell. Load up the
software and plug in my address.
Gimme a call and I'll approve your contact on my end once you're loaded and you
have the device configured.
Just follow the easy instructions from the CD.
