[videoblogging] Re: Archiving your Vid's

2005-07-20 Thread Mark Cyr

Video tape is still the cheapest archive medium.

I save all original (source) tapes, I make a comp reel of finished
pieces and save that, and I make DVDs of the posted files (QT-MPEG4)
and Avid bin. I use a firewire drive to archive this stuff to as I
go and when it gets large, I burn DVDs and lay off to tape.

I realize this may seem excessive, but my stuff is the result of
about a dozen people's work and we hope it may have many other uses,
so I need to be able to go back and re-arrange the pieces into new
forms when someone asks for it.

My video blog consists of video clips from a theater show and my
production practices come from my television film background, so this
might be over the top for a personal video blog. On the other hand,
ask yourself how you will feel in a few years when the only copy of
your favorite post is a 320x240 quicktime movie on Archive.org

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Archiving your Vid's

2005-07-20 Thread andrew michael baron

Perhaps one of the largest problems with the digital medium
altogether is that the issue of archiving has not been solved.

CDs and DVDs rot. Tapes fade. Operating systems go obsolete.

Professional digital archivists are always transferring archives to a
fresh medium.

However, the best argument I have for keeping all your source files
and templates is the near future.

About every 3 months, we have been upping file size parameters.
Bitrates, sizes, audio quality, etc.

I believe archives are important to keep available online.

In the future, people will look at all of our little videos as
nostalgic even when the matter is timeless.

Thus, its easy to go back and re-export to a contemporary size, when
you take the extra time to simply save your work.

Brush your teeth, insert a DVD and goto sleep.

In the Broadcast world generally everyone thinks that archiving and
back up are someone else's problem, unless there is money involved

keep as many different elements as possible--who knows what you may
want to do with it in the future.

 Hello,

In general, I recommend to avoid recording over your original
 (Master) material.

What I do is backup my project file, which is generally very

 small,

along with any original music/graphics. This will usually fit on a
CD. I then delete the media files in order to free up disk space.

 This accomplishes two things:
 1) I can always go back and re-edit the project (as I've kept the
project, original files, and Master material)
 2) I can re-use the Master material in future projects

There's no way to predict the future, so you don't know if the

 Master

material you've acquired will ever be worth something (at the very
 least probably to your family/friends).

For reference, I was told that when BET was sold to Viacom (for $3
Billion - yes, with a B), that Viacom was under the impression

 that

BET had kept all of their interview and concert footage. Needless

 to

say, the footage would be worth A LOT of money...only BET had
recorded over the Master material, so all that is left is what had
been edited and aired. BET was started with a $15,000 investment.

 My 2¢.

2005-07-20 Thread andrew michael baron

Speaking of conferences, this is not a whimsical thought - been
thinkin about it for awhile:

I propose we move vloggercon up to this fall.

The age old standard of annual conferences may work in some
industries, but this is moving too fast.

Also, winter is not an optimum time to get to or be in NYC.

We can handle it easily, time wise because we have such a larger
group now.

[videoblogging] Re: Archiving your Vid's

2005-07-20 Thread wazman_au

I capture the original footage via FireWire from my camera, first
making sure I have enough hard disk space.

To capture and edit the video I use Adobe Premiere Elements
(previously used Windows Movie Maker).

I export the edited video for the web, plus a full-sized AVI of the
edited video as well.

I burn the original AVI to a DVD as a DATA DISC, not as a playable
DVD. I use Sonic RecordNow for this; it came with my computer. I
also burn the edited, full-sized AVI, the project files (these are
not very big and its important to keep them, since they represent
what may be the single biggest investment of time in your video),
the web files and any ancillary files I've created such as still
images etc. Remembering all this is burnt as a data disc, not a
playable DVD. Overall I may end up using more than one discs ... in
this case I look at the file sizes and put whatever will fit
together on each disc.

If you've captured the original AVI as one huge file, you may have
problems fitting it on DVD depending on length. Better to capture it
as scenes or whatever this is called - basically your software
breaks it into chunks. I only just discovered this; in the past, for
a source AVI that wouldn't fit on one disc, I had to create a
project and export 20 minutes' worth of the source AVI (about the
amount that will go on one DVD), then export the rest and burn them
to separate discs. The scenes/chunks methods removes this step; you
just click and drag 4.7GB worth of the chunks onto one disc, burn,
then the rest onto another disc.

Then the original stuff I ditch from my hard drive.

Burning an AVI version of the edited video is important, I think.
When new whiz-bang software comes out with brilliant compression or
some other must-have feature you can import that edited file, rather
than having to edit all over again. Although I do find that AVIs
created with Windows Movie Maker will produce awful audio glitches
when imported into other programs.

Archival media are cheap, I got 50 Kodak DVD+Rs for about $30
Canadian. When some new medium comes up that lasts forever I'll be
sure to transfer everything.

[videoblogging] Better late... an Introduction

2005-07-20 Thread valdez

Hi all. Just wanted to introduce myself and my first vlog. My name
is Aaron Valdez. I live
in Iowa, work at a public access television station, and make culture
jamming videos and
landscape films in my spare time. At my wedding last week an old
friend kept bringing up
Video Blogs. I finally got a chance to look into it a few days ago.
The Free Vlog tutorials
were just what I needed. I went from knowing absolutely nothing
about vlogs to posting
my videos an hour later (I should also mention that I finally made
the jump from dial-up).

http://aaronvaldez.blogspot.com

Right now I've just been posting completed works but I plan on
developing more bloglike
entries like everyday Iowa sights and my attempted physical
transformation into fitness
celebrity John Basedow.

Anyway, I think vlogs are a great. I plan on teaching a class at our
access station and
spreading the word to everyone I know. I think my wife is already
tired of hearing me talk
about all of the possibilities.

The logic of doing it sooner is that I'm worried we'll be squished.

If we dont work harder and faster, we will be swept up entirely.

The major media, the FCC, world trade, everyone is seeing whats going
on.

In less than 2 months you'll have Apple pushing CBS video thru RSS
enclosures and the media writing stories about HOllywood broadcast
producers like the self-fufilling trademarking VJ guy.

The news, methods, procedures, legalities, tools, will be elsewhere. . .

Potentially.

Sorry Verdi, but one day you may very well be stopped for doing what
you do online.

I'm just saying I'm finding that we as a group, we as humans, we as a

It would be more fun.

We would get to meet again sooner in the Fall and then again next

We will always overlap other conferences.

Some of us will always be able to not make it or have other higher

I think it could easily happen by the mid to late october.

Implication of the lost Grokster case taken from this article:

http://tinyurl.com/9qsdg

In BrandX, Justice Thomas gets very confused about the internet and
ends up essentially announcing that everything a user does online is
an information service being offered by the access provider. DNS,
email (even if some other provider is making it available),
applications, you name it -- they're all included in this package.
And the FCC can make rules about these information services under its
broad ancillary jurisdiction.

I think we can all agree that Grand Rapids Michigan is the center
of the universe...I think it would be cool to have the conference in
the middle of the country somewhere like Denver or St Louis...but there
aren't many vloggers there. you also have to take into consideration
the best time for travel (airfare, taking off work, weather) all these
things are probably larger factors for most vloggers who aren't
attending other conferences or working independantly-- Josh Leowww.joshleo.com

I don't really care where we have it honestly,
but don't fault the New Yorkers for the fact that there's a
lot of vloggers there and they're organized.

I'm not faulting anyone for anything and certianly not for having
numbers (I did after all say That being said I do recognize that
there are ALOT of vloggers out there - and it's fair to consider that,
I think.).

But 'planning' can be done remotely ... and should take into
consideration the masses who are traveling to attend. NYC isn't
inherently cheaper (in some cases its more expensive) ... and so other
places should be considered.

The other intrinsic advantage of NY
(Chicago would probably fit here as well) is
that it's relatively easy to get around the city w/o renting a car,
which significantly lowers the cost and hassle of a trip. The West
Coast doesn't have that distinction unfortunately.

Yes, this is a valid 'pro' to put in the NYC column. (Chicago, as you
suspect, would also get this 'Pro' ... I've lived here - right
downtown - for 6 years and have yet to own a car. Public tranist here
is quite good.)

Nope. Lived outside Chicago for 18 years and never felt in danger by a
hired driver. Visited New York City 3 times in 2 years and had this
and several other bad cabbie experiences. Never met a New York cabbie
who actually knew how to get whereever I was going (or at least, none
who would admit to it on the first try).

Late Oct/Early Nov. is the worst possible time for me (2 or 3 other
conferences that week, plus a wedding), but again, I don't even know
if I would go to a Vloggercon anyway. Certainly Not if it's in NYC.

There may be quite a few vloggers in New York, but since my NPR
interview was cancelled because the interviewer was overwhelmed by
vloggers, and I know we have about a dozen in the Bay Area coming out
for Meet the Vloggers in 2 weeks, I'm thinking we have quite a few
out here, too.

Grand Rapids would be... interesting. It's about as much travel hassle
as NYC, but it's a prettier town, at least. Safer, too.

But I propose the following: St. John's in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I
think we can all agree that this is the #1 primo spot for the next
vloggercon. Or how about Hawaii, where there's at least one vlogger
who wouldn't have to travel :D

[videoblogging] Re: Vloggercon II

2005-07-20 Thread Steve Watkins

Heres my take on the FCC and government control of net content in general:

If enough people are watching stuff on the net, they will want to have
control over the content to a certain extent. They care, for all sorts
of reasons, about stuff that can influence large masses of people.

This is true of most governments, democratic or not. The USA tends to
be ahead when it comes to new legislation to match these new
objectives, and the current era has been giving off signs of seeking
more control rather than less. This hasnt really happened so much in
some countries, or at least not much, its still dificult to predict
what will happen globally.

Its quite reasonable to expect that if masses of people start
listening to podcasts and watching videos, they will take an interest.

So far there have been legal decisions etc that mean they are now in a
stronger position to act on these matters. The framework for their
future controlling actions to be 'legitimate' is falling into place.
But there is a difference between what they can legally do, and what
they are actually wanting/trying to do at the moment. There may be
quite a long time before they start poilicing these things in a
hevyhanded way, or it may never happen at all, it depends what goes on
in the wider world and whether they feel threatened etc.

Practicality is another issue. How do they get the resources to police
this stuff? If there are thousands of people creating stuff, will they
look at ever y one? Or will it be the old 'do some high profile
arrests prosecutions to scare the rest into submission' approach?

The USA certainly does not have the ability to police the entire
global internet, it has some special control over important
infrasctructure but thats not the same as actually having the
political leeway/power to do whatever it likes to the whole net. If it
came to it they could block undesirable content from overseas, make it
an offense for you to host your un-FCC-approved content overseas, or
loads of other methods, as could any other country that wanted to go
mad over information control.

None of this may happen, the bottom line is that the internet is not
immune from the physical world where there is nothing new about
limitations being placed on your freedom by the state. Most of the
methods used, and reasons for doing so, or not, are the same as
anything else in life. So much depends on what happens in the world
politically, the right kind of emergency could bring down the global
free internet at the drop of a hat, if it was percieved to be
necessary and a serious issue in the context of whatever the crisis is.

When considering how much to worry about it, consider what the heck
you could do about it. I dont see any specific legislation or court
action in progress that is scary/real/here now enough to be worth
protesting about. ie until they actually censor someone on the net, it
is OTT to accuse them of doing so, and of having a campaign against it.

Oh waffle waffle, more from me on other aspects of the conference
agenda, timing etc, later.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: THE BLUERAY DISC

2005-07-20 Thread David Yirchott

Cheryl,
Please do not misinterpret the way some people are put off by unsupported,
self-indulgent boasting as misogyny.

I sent two replies to your email. The first, admittedly kinder version
actually arrived after the second due to some sort of email problem on my
end, most likely -- Which is why I sent the second.

However, the tone of the second was due mostly to:
keep in mind my firm gets information
two years of more before the general public does
It's like having inside information on both the CES Consumer
Electronics Industry and the Film/Television Community

Have you guys forgotten what I do for a living?

hmmm??

First off, for such an insider, why didn't you know what Ro was talking
about? But more importantly, perhaps, Cheryl, how could we ever forget what
you do. It seems to me that you take every opportunity to remind us. Like
others, I am happy for you success. But I don't think you fully understand
the types of people who are on this list. I think, in large part, we are not
casual web surfers. We are not interested to find out that Tommy Lee and
Pamela Anderson are engaged *again*. We reject, to some degree, mainstream
media -- even those of us who work for it. We stay informed. If we are
interested in something we eat it, breathe it, and bathe in it. And, I
think, most of us understand that there is no way we can know everything. I
am certainly not trying to speak for everyone on this list; this is just my
take.

But knowledge is not a tire iron to beat the defenseless with. And ignorance
can be cured through teaching. I guess the best way I can relate this is,
when you were new and you had questions I do not remember anyone saying:
You don't know what RSS is? Ha. I am an ubergeek and I've known about that
since I was 12!

Here, none of us are insiders and all of us are. We all come from very
different backgrounds -- which is great.

For what it is worth, I don't have a problem with you as a woman. I love
women. And strong ones at that -- I do, however, think it is a cheap shot to
call upon the support of all womankindkind to defend you against the evil
men, when it is your attitude, not your gender to blame.

You are a professional communicator and so it boggles my mind a bit that you
think you will reach and engage people with psuedo-elitist downtalking.
Please don't. You don't have to impress us. Just be yourself.

Anyway, I guess we are like a big family here, and while we may never see
eye-to-eye it doesn't mean I hate you. I hope my email made sense. Thanks,

-David

[videoblogging] Re: videoblogging GROUP home to dirty trickster(s)

2005-07-20 Thread Steve Watkins

Firstly have there been any dirty tricks in the past? If so, this is
an issue that sould be discussed, not merely alluded to. So if
something like that happened in the past, it would be good to know the
details.

Now in regards to this issue of being labelled as a spammer, its not
really my field of expertise but am I right in thinking there is no
one universal system that governs this stuff?

eg just exactly what are we dealing with in this case?

Has anybody actually reported anybody or is this just an assumption?

certain email networks servers can label messages as spam, based on
various criteria and on lists of known spammers

your email client may have a spam filter that tries to guess what is
spam, based on coentents style of post, title, email address etc.

I would have thought that yahoo only deal with spam complaints that
are from yahoo-run email addresses, isnt it up to each group to police
its own spam?

if Cheryl has a yahoo address and someone reports her to yahoo, I
would expect them to terminate that email address if it was used for
bulk-emailing of unallowed spam. But Im not convinced thats what we
are talking about here.

So I remain totally unaware of what is occuring, and whether there is
in fact anybody being underhand, or whether there is an innocent
technical explanation that has been overlooked by the heat of the moment.

For the record I would never report such things, its not my style, I
moan in text, Im not a man of action and Im certainly not that spiteful.

Hoping that something Ive said may be of some use and that this
situation turns out to be a misunderstanding and that nobody has done
the dirty.

Cheers

Steve of Elbows

Well, if we ever want to have an event in San Francisco, I live in a big wherehouse that can
accomidate our needs.

Not that it is actually happening in SF. It's Bay Area Hating at its finest! Andrew, you don't
even have a Bay Area coorespondant for Rocketboom! SF Hater!!

Maybe we should all go to Richard's house-- I don't think many of us live out there. Some
nature may do us good.

I have a dream that all vlog utilities will become centralized and the

power of grassroots media to the masses.

With the browse-ability, tags, and quoting tool of Peter's Mefeedia.

With the link back to the vlogger power of Andreas' Linkubator.

With the short snippets of video from Ro's Video-blogging universe.

With the uploading transcoding genius of Sean's vblogcentral.

With the ability to download videos at 3:30 am of FireAnt.

With the gathered directories bound as one universal directory.

With all the teaching tools in one place.

With all the hosting power of Ourmedia and the Archive.

With the power of community here at the yahoo groups.

impossible to get an accurate number. I believe Peter has around 500
feeds listed in MeFeedia directory. Some of those are dupes. A lot of
other videoblogs may exist (with or without feeds don't want to

There are around 400 feeds listed in the FireANT directory. Its

For all of thoseanalytical people--which I love!!!-- reporting an email in Yahoo as sppam is as easy as hitting your "REPLY" button. In fact, the SPPAM button is on the same row of buttonswithyourREPLY button.

Was it a rumor that I started? Iwas not. Ask me "When did her email start arriving inyour "bulk" folder?" well, it wasAFTER I had already receiveda coupleof her emails that went to my "inbox". And AFTER people on this list started getting pissed off at her.

Just thought I'd let you know that I've posted info on my O'Reilly

event:

With the event being in my backyard (I live in NE Portland), I'm
happy to meet up with any vloggers during the event and show you some
of the sights of the town I love to boast about.

September is a great time of year here, and if any of you are
mountain bikers, I'm happy to drag you out to Forest Park (http://
www.parks.ci.portland.or.us/NaturalAreas/Forest.htm) for single- or
double-track riding. Bikes can be rented from Fat Tire Farm (http://

only a half-mile from the trailhead.

This group has now grown to over 1000 people.
This is a great success for all of us...
People are looking to connect and talk.
Videoblogging is spreading and this group is helping make that happen.

But the emails are getting out of hand as we all know.
As moderator, i now must lay down some rules.

Do not post personal mesages to the entire list.
Do not post emails with yes...i agreecool.
Do not post emails that are obviously aggressive at other mebers or the group.
Do not post incessant emails that are consistantly off-topic. This is
not a chat room.

Do send emails to each other off-list.
Do post emails with thought out ideas and responses.
Do send me(off-list) problems or complaints with other members.
Do talk to each other as friends, but in the context of
videoblogging(remember off-list emails are great).

If someone feels like these requests are unreasonable and ignores
them, you will be warned once and then removed from this list.

This is a private email list that you have been invited to join.

[videoblogging] Re: Vlogmap.org local clips (was How many videoblogs do we know of thus far?)

2005-07-20 Thread LeanBackVids.com

Ro already has this latest vid feature and we are working on a
centralized data solution. Once this is in place, I'll be able to
hook my data into his and show the latest movie he has.

Currently, there is a limitation that all marker info is loaded at the
start. I'm working on only loading the marker info data once the
actual marker is clicked. This will allow me to add photos, video
thumbs and descriptions without a big download hit.

[videoblogging] Heavy.com

2005-07-20 Thread v1b3n

I was browsing around this afternoon, and came upon an old favorite,
heavy.com. Anyone notice that they are able to do video at 640x480
with very little quality problems, and it loads fast too. I wonder
how they get it so nice and small at such a resolution?

Hmmmany thoughts?

[videoblogging] Re: How many videoblogs do we know of thus far?

2005-07-20 Thread petertheman

I have 155 sites listed in the VlogMap.org database.

You can check http://mefeedia.com/feeds/, currently about 600+ feeds. A
few of those are RSS feeds of searches, quite a few are duplicate
feeds. Many videobloggers have multiple feeds (if you want me to remove
your duplicate feeds from mefeedia, email me at petervandijck at gmail).

So I think there are like 400 active what we would call videobloggers
in Mefeedia.

I would guess there are probably a few 100 other ones out there that
regularly post video, but a lot of them don't have blogs or RSS feeds.

But I may be way off :)

[videoblogging] Re: Read please

2005-07-20 Thread petertheman

I agree with everything Jay said. And:

1. Remember that the main aim of this group is to help each other and
newbies to create videoblogs. We're here to grow that vlogosphere. We
*are* the media. Be nice to newbies.

2. So let's keep stuff more or less on topic.
The mailing list isn't a chatroom. If you want to chat, the group HAS a
chatroom. It's here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/chat
It's not being used much, but that might change. Next time people start
typing crazy off-topic back and forth emails, *take it to the
chatroom*. You're abusing the attention of the over 1000 subscribers.

3. Our vendor rule still stands: no self promotion. Add value.

Ant that, as they say, is that.

Re: [videoblogging] Vlogs As Art

2005-07-20 Thread Christopher Weagel
Anne

yeah I view my work as art.

I view videoblogging as a separate channel, from traditional movie making and television, to get my work out distributed.

Much of my content would never find an outlet in those areas.

I spend a lot of time going beyond just turning on the camera and talking (not that such things can't be art).
Editing, planning, writing, etc.

Sometimes lots of that, sometimes little.

Look around www.human-dog.com, there are many styles involved in the various approaches.

There are many approaches contained within the lab videos:
http://www.human-dog.com/lab

I think of video in a videoblog structure as equal to anything I might find in a gallery or theatre or on TV as far legitimacy.

Hi All,

I am interested in the unique qualities of vlogs that set them apart

vlogs and other video productions? How would you describe those
differences? Is it in the vlogs themselves, the mode of
production/distribution, or is it a bit of both? If a televison show
is offered exclusively online, is it a vlog?

I'm curious as to how many here view their vlogs as art. Do you
consider what you do art? would you be interested in showing your
 vlogs in an art context?

I'm not much for tech talk but I do love to talk about the theoretical
 implications of vlogging. Any thoughts?

hi Adrian-
thanks for the tip
always great to hear from you.
i will try it out in the am!
my editing suite also happens to be my flatmates bedroom.

I met Nichola Vanzijl this evening - the Swiss artist who created a
mobile phone video project.
We talked about your work, so if your ears were burning, this is why!

It's a REST based API to your blog (think Blogger API with actual
features). You can fetch, edit, add and delete entries and so on. I think
Blogger has support already?
