confirmed what Verdi/Steve have been saying.

But I have a _possible_ workaround to get H.264 into a mov file that
is ipoddable.

Just trying it now. Will report.

[videoblogging] Let's stake our claim by cross-promoting vlogs

2005-11-02 Thread wazman_au
The big media do it, so why don't we? Let's put trailers in our
videos that promote other vlogs we like. Everyone could make their
own trailer for their podcast; post it somewhere, maybe in a central
repository; and others could include them in their videos as they
see fit. I'd be happy to include a five- or 10-second clip with
Crash Test Kitchen episodes.

There are some vlogs out there attracting a fair-sized audience and
getting exposure through the likes of iTunes. I'm happy with how
Crash Test Kitchen is doing and I notice other people on this list
cropping up in the Top 100 podcasts. We haven't yet, but we got on
the front page once!

I'm sure there are other vlogs equally worthy of exposure that, for
no good reason, haven't been in the limelight so much. They could
benefit if the higher-rated podcasts helped promote them.

The big media are already starting to bombard podcasting, so let's
stake our claim as a group. We could brand ourselves as the
Independent Video Podcast Network or something more catchy. A catchy
animation, logo or something would help with the branding.

I know there are some people doing similar things - like Steve
Garfield with his Vlog Soup - and I think we should take it a step
further.

Yes that one works on the ipod :)

What method did you use? Save to baseline h264 .mp4 then load the .mp4
into quicktime and save as a self-contained .mov? I just tried that
method myself and it works, so I guess so.

Groovy, didnt take long to come up with a workaround, nice one.

Hi, Aimee. Welcome! I look forward to your videos. Unfortunately, I am at work

As far as the trash comments on Blogger, you can just delete them if they are
offensive or look like spam or something. Me, I like offensive but that doesn't
work for everyone.

To prevent these comments, log into your account and click on the settings
tab. Choose comments and click yes for the questions, Show word verification
for comments? This should prevent the automated bots from spamming your site.

Good luck, and again, welcome!

It is not impossible to keep this community of personal people going.
This specific community will change soon, and will have to be
redefined in other ways for those seeking the personal connection. It
will possibly have to split into smaller groups that maintain
communication with one another. It might be needed to limit members
from joining certain groups and encourage them to join with other new
people while still being together with one larger group, like this
yahoo group here.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: top feedburner vlogs.. steve garfield gets bumped by the boob

2005-11-02 Thread Verdi
On Oct 31, 2005, at 5:55 PM, Christopher Ivanyi wrote:

My question to you -- my challenge to you would be, to stop vlogging
altogether. If you don't need an audience, and you vlog in order
achieve the pleasure of having done them, and you don't need the
validation of an audience -- then just stop making them. This goes
for all vloggers out there, especially the more popular vloggers!
 Just stop making vlogs.

Look, in my life, I have created all kinds of art. Some things I've
created have antagonized an audience and begged to be disliked - I
was once shouted off stage, I didn't leave, then someone unplugged my
equipment. Some things I've created defied interpretation by using
language and images who's only significance is locked in my mind
alone - the audience was understandably indifferent to this kind of
work. After 15 years of this, if I NEEDED an audience, you'd think
I'd have quit. I haven't quit because even more than enjoying being
an artist, artist is something that compels me to be. It's as
natural and necessary as breathing and eating.

Or ask yourself this, what would happen if in the course of vlogging
your audience stats diminished daily until not one person clicked onto
one of your movies. But you faithfully posted movies nonetheless. At
a certain point wouldn't you ask yourself, what's the point?

50 weeks ago I started a new blog and added video to it as an
experiment because I'm always experimenting. That's what I do.
Here's my initial post:
http://michaelverdi.com/index.php/2004/11/15/the-game/
My experiment hasn't turned out the way I thought it would. Almost
all of my goals set out in that first post are completely irrelevant
to me now. But it's been one of the most amazing years of my life so
far. And the most important lessons that I've learned have nothing
to do with how many people are watching my videos and everything to
do with what happens when you give of yourself fully, without
reservations, solely for the pleasure of doing it.

George Bernard Shaw gives me goose bumps every time I read his quote:
This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized
by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a
feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining
that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.

I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and
as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can.

I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the
more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no brief
candle for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold
of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible
before handing it on to future generations.

big deal about how they're just a few guys with cheap video cameras.
Their goal of creating a warm fuzzy feeling about Microsoft is great,
I'm sure some people even buy into it, but it would be cool to see them
promote videoblogging as something any Windows user can do, and provide
all the information that Freevlog does, aimed towards Windows users. I'd
consider that giving back to the community.

This may seem trivial to a group made up primarily of Mac users and Linux
hosting accounts, but the reality is many of the companies who will do video
blogging long term use Microsoft server products. These people will use only
small bits of any community effort here because their needs aren't addressed
 by this group.

Companies still use servers running Windows!? ;)

[videoblogging] How to iPod a mov file in H.264

2005-11-02 Thread wazman_au
This is for the brothers and sisters who want to put out QuickTime mov
files using the H.264 codec, but want them to work on iPods as well.

A mov H.264 file has to use the baseline profile or it won't work on
an iPod. Problem is, QuickTime doesn't give you that option when you
export to a mov file. Yet you have to use mov if you want to retain
special QuickTime features like clickable links and other
interactive/funky stuff.

But there's a workaround that allows you to use the baseline profile
and make your mov file ipoddable.

* Export - Movie to MPEG-4 file. Dig around in the settings and
options and select the H.264 codec, along with the framerate, bitrates
etc. that you like. And, vitally, the BASELINE profile. Baseline is
non-negotiable - my suggestions for the other settings come later on.
Make sure you've selected AAC audio, too. This first step is where
you'll be doing your compression of both video and audio, so make sure
you get the settings right for a good squeeze.
* Once you've exported (it might take a while), open the resulting
file in QuickTime. Add any text tracks, hyperlinks etc. THEN choose
SAVE AS and select the option to save your movie as a self-contained
movie. This should be fairly quick.

What you get is a mov file that contains baseline H.264 and it will
definitely work on an iPod. Of course, your links can't be clicked on
an iPod (yet) but people don't just watch your vids on an iPod do they???

OK, full credit to Mike and Steve for their work on this. Here are my
suggestions (previously posted elsewhere) for settings that produce
very watchable video at a reasonable file size.

These are based on Mike Verdi's 3ivx specs I've been using for a
while. They produce a slightly larger file (14.5
meg, compared with about 13.8 for 3ivx). But the H.264 version
supports a 50% higher bitrate than 3ivx; and a framerate of 24
compared with 12 for 3ivx. It is definitely more watchable than the
3ivx version.

Remember, these are the settings you use when originally exporting
your movie to an MPEG-4:

File format, MP4
Video format, H.264
Data rate, 225 kilobits/second (roughly 28 kilobytes/sec)
Optimized for download
Image size 320 x 240 QVGA
Frame Rate 24
Key Frame, automatic
Frame Reordering, box ticked
Then click Video Options, and ...
Restrict profile(s) to baseline.
Encoding mode best quality (multi-pass)
Then click OK
Now in the second-top drop-down box select Audi
Format, AAC
Channels, mono
Data Rate 32kbps
Output sample rate 22.050kHz
Encoding quality better

OK, then SAVE.

You're now outputting your MPEG-4. Follow the instructions above to
save the resulting file as a mov file.

Hope this helps someone,
Waz.

[videoblogging] Re: Slimmer's recipe for iPod H.264

2005-11-02 Thread wazman_au
OK. For completeness, and with due acknowledgement to Mike and Steve,
here's the RIGHT way to get H.264 mov files that work on an iPod. The
specs given at the start of this thread are not quite right because
they omit a step to set the video profile to baseline, which is
required by the iPod.

This is for the brothers and sisters who want to put out QuickTime mov

[videoblogging] iTunes Top 100 Podcasts

2005-11-02 Thread LeanBackVids.com
This was a bit of a shock to me...

According to iTunes' Top Subscribed Podcasts, KITKAST is #22 and
Rocketboom is #57.

That seems odd, although KITKAST has been getting more and more
readers each day (currently at 1,710 according to FeedBurner)...

This is by far the fastest growth of any vlogger to date:
http://www.vlogmap.org/feedburner/fbfeed.php?fbid=KITKAST

Still, I would have thought that RocketBoom would have more iTunes
subscribers. Not really a fair comparison since RB has multiple feeds.

Please don't shoot the messenger. And yes, I like numbers.

2005-11-02 Thread Susan
Works! Thanks! And I have 3ivx installed. I saved a .wmv

Ok, I just stumbled across a GREAT lil' program that will DIRECTLY
convert WMV files to MP4 encoded MOV files - and it's FAST. It will
even batch convert many files; and I've tested it - the results play
on the iPod! This is perfect for those who already have alot of
WMVs
 created.

The freely available version will convert any movie thats 5min or
less. (The full version is only 40 bucks I think and will do any
 length video.)

Man I wish I'd found this earlier.

All you do is point it at the WMVs you want to convert, and it zips
through saving a MOV of each. You can if you choose change the
 default MP4 encoding settings.

It will tell you all the bitrates that were used on the WMVs and you
can set similar bit rates if you want for the MOV. I set the MOV
bit
rates to be about that of the WMVs and the quality/fizesize was
right
 on.

Thanks to this lil' application I likely will go back and make my
old
vids available via QuickTime. I'll be able to set it once and come
back to a directory full of MOVs. (Rather than the lengthy
Import/Export/Import/Export process per movie otherwise required.)

I hope to do some more testing later on a PC that has 3ivx installed
(this one doesn't) to see if that'll work with the program.

iTunes Top 100 podcast list is not counting the total # of subscribers,
it's counting the # of signups for that day.

2005-11-02 Thread wazman_au
I don't know whether this has any bearing on your thinking, but I'm
pretty sure that the Top 100 actually is a measure of new sign-ups,
not the actual traffic. So being No. 1 doesn't actually make you the
most watched, it just means you got the most sign-ups. I'll check
this, though.

The iTunes podcast team tell me they only keeps stats on who clicks
the subscribe button. After that, the feed goes straight from your
own server to the subscriber's desktop and they keep no stats about
how much stuff is actually being downloaded.

Yeah, here's what my source at iTunes podcasting tells me about how
they choose the Top 100:

Number of subscribes during the past week (I think), with
subscribes from yesterday worth the most, and subscribes from a week
ago worth the least. But there's also some magic in there somewhere,
because people tried gaming the system at first and we somehow
stopped it.

[videoblogging] 'Chicago Protest' or 'Sudden Need for Camera'

2005-11-02 Thread David Meade
So I was walking back to the office from lunch today when I was cut
off by a mass of people in a marching protest down the middle of busy
Chicago streets.

Immediately of course I thought cool, this would make a great vlog.
I noticed they were surrounded by an army of police to protect them so
I thought, clearly they have all the permits required to do this'.
Nobody was going to dramatically get carted away by the police ... and
that made me wonder: Is this rather large showing going to get
completely ignored by the mass media just because they couldn't show
clips of somebody getting tossed in a wagon?!

I reached for my camera but didn't have it. So I ran back to the
office grabbed my camera and ran back out to find them again.

I was on lunch hour and couldn't hang out to interview or anything.
But I just kept thinking nobody is going to see this because they did
it the right way ... that doesn't seem fair.

... so I taped some of it. (Nobody is gonna see it now either, but at
least the could :-P )

I don't claim this video to be of any great importance, but I had fun
filming and releasing it knowing it would be completely ignored by the
news. :-P And so I offer it up if you're interested in seeing that
sort of thing. ( http://www.DavidMeade.com )

If you watch it, I apologize if I sound out of breath, but I was ...
out of breath. Had some running to do to catch up with them. I'll
not make the mistake of leaving the camera at the office again.

(This protest was to encourage the impeachment of Bush. While I admit
to smiling alot while watching them, my urge to video and share it was
not driven by their message but by my belief that because they
followed all the rules - and thus weren't going to get in trouble - it
would be completely ignored by the mass media. I would have done the
same thing had they been on the other side of the political fence.)

- Dave
