[videoblogging] many ways to skin a cat (was Re: Flash, etc)

2005-12-21 Thread WWWhatsup
Right.

I think this, particularly based on my experiments with http://google.com/ig
last week, could well become a healthy avenue of distribution for vlog
floggers. Throw the content onto google video and publish a module
that accesses the latest content. User prefs on the module could allow
viewing of past content.

check this one
http://hansschmucker.free.fr/blog/2005/12/another-google-homepage-video-module.html

joly

I don't see Flash video as a solution for this scenario yet, though it
is a decent solution if you expect all your viewers to watch the
content online embedded in a webpage.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Flash, video iPod and offering MP3 podcasts

2005-12-21 Thread Deirdre Straughan

I thought FireAnt accepted SWF files - I seem to remember mine showing up just fine. I mostly use SWF, and those files get the most downloads on my site, wherever those are coming from. I compress them with Sorenson Squeeze.
I've only recently started using FLV in order to work with the elegant Flash video player that was recommended on this list. The downside is that I have to compress in both SWF and FLV. The upside is that I can now see how many people are viewing the video within the page (few) vs taking it as a feed from elsewhere.
I also use QuickTime Pro to compress the files as M4Vs for iTunes. And some files I also do as high-quality WMVs for viewing on Nessuno.TV.Doing all this, plus the RSS feed, manually, because I don't use blog software (I like to have more control over my site's structure). It's a pain, but gets the results I want.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Flash, video iPod and offering MP3 podcasts

2005-12-21 Thread Joshua Kinberg

Yes, FireAnt does play SWF files. But Flash video is not a SWF. It is
an FLV loaded into a SWF.. often loaded externally via relative link
within the Flash file. This type of scenario often breaks syndication
because it cannot be viewed offline or from a local hard drive.
Syndicating the raw FLV file is preferrable as it doesn't require any
dependencies on networked resources, but it is a little more difficult
to play as FLV doesn't play natively within Flash player -- it must be
loaded inside a SWF controller.

[videoblogging] Parents need to take responsibility WAS: Videoblogging: potential dark side

2005-12-21 Thread jeffrey_harrington
Simple response... PARENTS need to keep an eye on the kid! Use a
ROUTER block the PORTS - DO What needs to be done but the parents need
to stand up and understand that what happens in a kids room should not
be a mystery to them

Any parent who is shocked that their kids never had any dealings with
sex or sexuality on the net... then they are blind.

Even if parents feel that their kids are can be trusted and do not
need to be monitored then they dreaming.

A few questions should be asked :

   1. How did the kid the the computer?
   2. How did the kid set the computer up in an area where it can't be
seen when being used?
   3. How did the kid get Internet?
   4. How did the kid get the Web Cam?
   5. How did the kid get a Digital Camera?
   6. How is it that parents don't know that they need to monitor the
activity of their kids, in every aspect of life?

Re: [videoblogging] Parents need to take responsibility WAS: Videoblogging: potential dark side

2005-12-21 Thread Deirdre Straughan

It would be nice to think that everyone who has a computer knows everything they need to stay safe online. We all know that isn't the case. (That's why viruses spread so easily.) And most teenagers are more comfortable and savvy with technology than their parents. A kid who wants to can easily hoodwink most parents.
On 12/21/05, jeffrey_harrington [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Simple response... PARENTS need to keep an eye on the kid!Use aROUTER block the PORTS - Many parents' response to this would be Huh? Actually, that's my response, too - I have a router, but how would I use it to block ports, and how would that help?
 4. How did the kid get the Web Cam? 5. How did the kid get a Digital Camera?
In the case of Justin the teen porn star, he got the webcams etc. paid for by his clients, via an Amazon wish list, and he hid them from his mother. Do you have a teenager? If so, could you swear that you know what's in every nook and cranny of their room?
 6. How is it that parents don't know that they need to monitor theactivity of their kids, in every aspect of life?
LOL. Are you with your child 24 hours a day, overseeing their every moment? It just ain't humanly possible, and, even if it was, it wouldn't be healthy for either party.I'm not saying there's no solution (my own solution is detailed on
http://beginningwithi.com/tech/kidsonline.html), and I do agree that parents need to TRY to be aware of what their kids are up to, and are ultimately responsible. But expecting any parent, let alone one who's not tech-savvy, to be able to monitor their child's every online moment is just unrealistic.

That's very responsible of you, Susan, I wish more parents kept a
close eye on their children. There are so many people up in arms in
the media these days about pornography and other dangers to children
on the Internet, but many parents blame the government and ICANN
because they don't want to take responsibility for their children's
actions. I write about this a lot on my blog at mskitka.com.

Awww, it would have been fun to chat with you in the Flash Conference.

I do have one suggestion for your show. It seems like the audio is
very highly compressed with little range and depth -- sometimes almost
lispy. Audio takes much less space than video and it could probably
have a higher rate. Also a sound cover on the microphone (even a sock
works pretty well) dampens P's, S's and T's.

Nice meeting you Herald...sweet name btw...Sorry about getting all crazy about corporate power and such, but I really see that as the most dangerous issue today in the world, and I see this medium of distributed media, vlogging in particular, as the greatest check against that power. In the future, I will try not to let these beliefs drag down a conversation again, although I do believe that these issues need to be addressed. Anyway, I will try to leave that off my spiel in the vlogger videoconferences in the future. I will probably fail in this, but you always have the option to not feed the 'troll'.See you all soon, RonOn Dec 21, 2005, at 11:34 AM, Harold Johnson wrote: Hi everyone,I really enjoyed participating in the videoblogging videoconference yesterday; thanks for posting the invite here and for being nice to me.  :)Sincerely,Podcaster Haroldof Podcaster Herald http://podcasterherald.com YAHOO! [videoblogging] iTunes xml tags

2005-12-21 Thread Rob Parrish
I'm trying to get my feed up to speed with iTune's demands. This is
probably a dumb question, but here it goes. So, Apple wants a bunch
of tags inserted into the feed. Do I do that through Blogger,
Feedburner, (I don't see a way that these deplay the code of the feed)
or do I need to open the atom file that is on my web server and add
the tags there? If I do the last option, will that mess up the auto
updating functionality of the feed? Will the tags survive the next
time a do a post? Thanks for the help.

[videoblogging] Coming Soon: Center for Citizen Media

2005-12-21 Thread Enric
From Dan Gillmor's blog,
http://bayosphere.com/blog/dan_gillmor/20051220/coming_soon_center_for_citizen_media
or
http://tinyurl.com/agvme :
=
Starting in 2006, I'll be putting together a nonprofit Center for
Citizen Media. The goals are to study, encourage and help enable the
emergent grassroots media sphere, with a major focus on citizen
journalism.

I'm thrilled and honored that the center will be affiliated with two
superb universities in a bi-coastal partnership.

* Here on the Pacific Rim, where I live, the center will
collaborate with the University of California, Berkeley's Graduate
School of Journalism. As an I.F. Stone Teaching Fellow, I'll do a
class next fall, and my principal physical office will be at Berkeley
as well.
* Our Atlantic-facing partner is the Berkman Center for Internet
Society at Harvard University Law School, where I'll be a Research
Fellow. I'll visit there regularly -- at least once a month -- to work
with other fellows, faculty and students.

We also plan to sponsor regular gatherings at both locations (and, I
hope, elsewhere in my travels) for people interested in citizen
journalism.

Why do this? We need a thriving media and journalism ecosystem. We
need what big institutions do so well, but we also need the bottom-up
-- or, more accurately, edge-in -- knowledge and ideas of what I've
called the former audience that has become a vital part of the
system. I'm also anxious to see that it's done honorably and in a way
that helps foster a truly informed citizenry. I think I can help.

This is a nonpartisan initative. I aim to help anyone, regardless of
political views, who has a constructive project and who is interested
in expanding the reach of citizen media in an principled way.

The center will live virtually at citmedia.org. I'll be posting more
details there in the relatively near future.

In feedburner there is an option to add in all your iTunes tags, no
direct coding of an XML file is needed.

Probably in the SmartCast options...

Take a look.

I thought you made some really valid points there, Ron. I began commenting on them, but probably got lost on a tangent as I sometimes do. Anyway, I will try to leave that off my spiel in the vlogger videoconferences in the future. I will probably fail in this, but you always have the option to not feed the 'troll'.

Re: [videoblogging] Parents need to take responsibility WAS: Videoblogging: potential dark side

2005-12-21 Thread Jeffrey
This simplest point is that the PARENTs need to know what is happening.
If you have a router in your house, you can block the PORTS that are
used for chats, cams, etc. If the parent in JUSTIN's house had *simply
not allowed *the computer to be HIDDEN in his room In addition -
how did he get the PAYPAL account with out some form of CHECKING account
- which his parents should and could have monitored.

Don't blame the Net for parents who lack good judgment or simple common
sense. We've all heard stories like Justin's but what we hardly ever
hear is how the parents used the computer as a babysitter and to occupy
the child's time.

ANYONE with a child and a computer should be there when the computer is
used, or have it set so that the net is only able to be used when it is
need for appropriate task.

Parents are at FAULT not the NET, not the Media.

Deirdre Straughan wrote:
It would be nice to think that everyone who has a computer knows
everything they need to stay safe online. We all know that isn't the
case. (That's why viruses spread so easily.) And most teenagers are
more comfortable and savvy with technology than their parents. A kid
who wants to can easily hoodwink most parents.

 On 12/21/05, *jeffrey_harrington* [EMAIL PROTECTED]

 ROUTER block the PORTS -

Many parents' response to this would be Huh? Actually, that's my
response, too - I have a router, but how would I use it to block
ports, and how would that help?

   4. How did the kid get the Web Cam?
5. How did the kid get a Digital Camera?

In the case of Justin the teen porn star, he got the webcams etc. paid
for by his clients, via an Amazon wish list, and he hid them from his
 mother.

Do you have a teenager? If so, could you swear that you know what's in
every nook and cranny of their room?

6. How is it that parents don't know that they need to monitor the
activity of their kids, in every aspect of life?

LOL. Are you with your child 24 hours a day, overseeing their every
moment? It just ain't humanly possible, and, even if it was, it
wouldn't be healthy for either party.

I'm not saying there's no solution (my own solution is detailed on
http://beginningwithi.com/tech/kidsonline.html), and I do agree that
parents need to TRY to be aware of what their kids are up to, and are
ultimately responsible. But expecting any parent, let alone one who's
not tech-savvy, to be able to monitor their child's every online
 moment is just unrealistic.

[videoblogging] Re: Videoblogging: potential dark side

2005-12-21 Thread taoofdavid65
Glad that you did jump in on this. I was hoping to hear your input.

Have either of your daughters ever had to deal with online wierdos
with respect to their vlogs?

My daughter wants to start one and asked me to set it up for her. I am
a little wary to get one going for her simply because of some of the
freaks that are out there. I have had numerous talks with her about
people she may encounter online and I do monitor her browsing habits.
Thankfully I havent had to deal with any freakish shit...yet.

Wow this is long thread. I'd thought I'd jump in real quick as a

 1. Like a few people said already, parents have to monitor what their
 children do.
 2. Parents need to have honest conversations with their children.
 3. People, including kids, can learn to videoblog even without the
benefit of classes (in person or virtual). Having a class or a
tutorial allows for the possibility of putting things in context. In
the case of kids - the rest is up to them and their parents.
 4. If a child is molested by an adult chances are it was someone you
know who did it - not some random Internet predator. Points 1, 2, and
3 will help prevent 4 - on the internet or in person.

[videoblogging] Seeking Advice on Field Correspondents and Press Kits

2005-12-21 Thread Ms. Kitka
I just took on my first voluntary field correspondent to cover the
Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas in January and I need to prove
that he is on assignment for Kitkast. I'm in the process of compiling
a package about Kitkast and I'm wondering what you would include if
you were in the same predicament.

I was told to submit three things:
- A letter to validate my field correspondent;
- A description of Kitkast and its viewership statistics;
- Kitkast episodes and printed pages from the site.

The thing I'm wondering, though, is if I should include reviews or
articles written by others about the show. They don't accept media
from many blogs/vlogs so I have to prove myself for them.

I would appreciate any advice that you would be able to provide on
this matter.

It can be expensive, but I have found that Adobe(macromedia) After
FX is one of the most powerful programs for creating title
sequences, short animations and basically all kinds of vector and bit-
map manipulations to occur over time. Its like Photoshop in 4D. You
can create your own transitions and effects and there are a lot of
3rd party expansion plugins, etc. too.

It depends a bit on how long your credits are. Either way, don't
forget the low-tech solutions:

1. Write or print out your credits onto a long piece of paper (or a
wall, whiteboard or other large surface. Then film the piece while
moving either the camera or the surface.

2. Make a tall, thin image in a paint program containing all your text
and pan down it using your video editing software. Some editing
software can also pan across vector files such as WMF, Illustrator, or
Flash.

3. Make your credits in your favourite text layout program, then do a
screencast (ie. record what appears on the screen or in a window) as
you manually scroll down the document - the free camstudio software
is good for this.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but, according to apple:

You can also ping the iTunes server to update your podcast information by
entering the following URL into a browser:

https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=FEEDID

where FEEDID is your iTunes podcast numeric ID. You can also use:

https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?feedURL=http://FEEDURL

where FEEDURL is the url for your feed.

Regardless of the ping method you use, iTunes will return an HTTP 200 code.

[videoblogging] porn vlogs are not the darkside

2005-12-21 Thread mkleider
lets assume for the sake of discourse that there is nothing wrong with the term
porn
vlogs.

it is not clear to me that there is anything sinister about a porn vlog. i
like porn, and some
of the porn vlogs i have seen are hilarious. in fact, i would argue (though
this is admitedly
contentious) that taken as a whole, their content is much more intriguing than
the more
conservative vlogs our there. while many people find Andy's drive to work or
Bill's cat a
thrilling subject to video blog, there are many that would prefer to watch guys
try to pick
up and sleep with random girls on the beach. unless you think you can defend a
hierarchical status between preferences, you will let the issue rest and submit
to a, hey,
whatever floats your boat philosophy.

[videoblogging] Re: Credits Maker

2005-12-21 Thread Carl Weaver
I really like the idea of working with your limitations, like Frank Carver
suggested. You can also record yourself writing the credits on a white board
then play it back at 5X faster. Or, if you have the ability, write backward on
a piece of clear plastic, like some weather reporters do. That would be a neat
low-tech gimmick. Just a couple ideas.

I know lots of people hate Pinnacle products, but I am a big fan of them.
Pinnacle Studio has a pretty good credit-making device. Of course, it isn't
free...

I really like low-tech creative solutions. Sometimes they are overlooked
because they aren't as cool and whiz-bang as the high-tech options, but that
can also lend a certain charm or an air of really being a down-to-earth project.

Good luck,
Carl

[videoblogging] Re: Seeking Advice on Field Correspondents and Press Kits

2005-12-21 Thread Ms. Kitka
Thanks Carl, that's what I figured... I just wanted to make sure that
my brain thinks the same way as others. I don't think I'm going to be
mentioning the blog at all, but I think I'll refer to Kitkast as a
video-podcast since I think these industry people will perk their ears
a little higher than if I call it a vlog or videoblog.

Again, thanks for your help.
Kitka

Hi, Kitka. I have seen your site before and really enjoy your videos!

What I recommend is that you put in as much as possible to make
yourself and
your site seem professional. You have a tougher row to hoe being a
blogger
because not many people take this seriously. I recommend you get
away from
the term blog and adopt some other label, like new media outlet.
I am
sure you can come up with something better with a few minutes of
thought.
This is just off the top of my head. (Sorry, folks - no offense meant to
bloggers and vloggers, it's just that generic Internet media are
taken a bit
more seriously than blogs. At least that's my understanding.)

Your media kit should be used to provide any information about your
company
you would want people to know. It is an open forum for you to brag on
yourself, as long as you can back it up. This can be used as a
packet for
potential advertisers you approach also. It should have stuff like
visitor
statistics, articles about you and your site, a summary of what the
site is,
the audience, etc. I have put these together before. It's hard to
compile
everything but worth the effort. Think of it as putting together a
portfolio
if you were a photographer or a writer.

Once you have all the info together, you might even want to scan
anything
paper and save it all as one big file so that when you need them,
you just
print off one large document instead of a bunch of small ones.
Remember that
this is a living document and be sure to update it as often as you
need to.

 Good luck with this!

 Cheers,
 Carl

2. I don't want to deny my child using chat or cams at all - these are major teenage communications media these days; cutting them off would be like cutting off the phone a generation ago. 3. I also use chat and webcams, for both professional and personal reasons. Sounds like a major PITA to turn those off for my daughter and on for me at the same time - a technical challenge I wouldn't know how to solve.
If the parent in JUSTIN's house had *simplynot allowed*the computer to be HIDDEN in his room In addition -
how did he get the PAYPAL account with out some form of CHECKING account- which his parents should and could have monitored. You don't need a checking account to get a PayPal account. You may not even need a credit card. Justin had to have a checking account for his web business, presumably. His mother may be culpable for not knowing more about his business and how much money he was making with it, but she may not be a businesswoman, either. Justin was being guided in deceit by a group of very savvy, educated people (doctors, lawyers, etc.) - it's not surprising they outwitted her.
Don't blame the Net for parents who lack good judgment or simple common
sense. We've all heard stories like Justin's but what we hardly everhear is how the parents used the computer as a babysitter and to occupythe child's time. Some parents undoubtedly do that, as many do with the TV. Others, like myself, realize that the computer is an essential instrument of modern living and that kids need to learn to use it.
ANYONE with a child and a computer should be there when the computer is
used, or have it set so that the net is only able to be used when it isneed for appropriate task. You're doing a paper, so I'll allow you access to Encyclopedia Brittanica? Come on, you know that's not realistic.
Parents are at FAULT not the NET, not the Media.Parents are responsible. Fault? That's a little tougher.
You didn't answer my question: are YOU at this time a parent? Of a teenager? ---Anyway, all this is way off the topic of videoblogging. As I said, I brought it up because I think we need to be aware of all potential misuses as well as uses of this technology we love and share. Any technology can be misused. That doesn't mean the technology itself is bad or should be banned or kept out of the hands of kids. It just means that, when educating kids in using it, we also need to educate them about the dangers.

[videoblogging] Re: Quicktime Interactivity

2005-12-21 Thread wtrainbow
Adobe GoLive also has a QT Editor that lets you add sprites, href track,
chapters etc.. to
facillitate the granular casts/vlogs some have been talking about.

andrew does the QT Track editor use sprites? if so have you ever experimented
with them?

Andrew if you're reading this: Are you using HREF tracks or some

QuickTime Text Track Editor for Mac OS X

This is easy enough to add into a regular process, so that if anyone
wanted to add interactivity to their QT videos - all the time - if
you get used to this neat little app, its easy and quick enough.
