Re: [videoblogging] Re: Video Goes Underground

2008-08-07 Thread Deirdre Straughan
Reminds me of my college year abroad which I shared with, among other
people, a woman who was a performance artist and somewhat disdainful of
anyone who wasn't... artistic. Her attitude about it was such that I never
wanted to be classed as an artist, by her definition. After we'd been in
India together for several months, she happened to see me doing fine
embroidery one day and gasped: You never told me you were an artist. I'm
not, I snapped. I'm an artisan.

Art is in the eye of the beholder, or some such...

As for me, I'm a sold-out corporate shill, and perfectly happy. ; ) And I
love Rupert, whatever he calls himself.

And Jeffrey, yes, I see that I misunderstood you and that we agree
quite a lot. Wreck and Salvage should be at MOMA just as Rocketboom
are at Sony. But that seems a long way off.

I just took a drive into town and had a think about this.

I like your word 'invade' more than I like your previous word 'invite'.

You used the word failure, which I disputed.

But actually, I do think that we have failed as a community to take
ourselves and each other seriously enough as artists.

I think - and have always thought - that the word 'videoblogging' is
incredibly unhelpful. As were all the discussions about its definition.

Michael Szpakowski from DVBlog, who recently featured one of my
videos, told me I should be more 'up' myself about what I do.

I've stripped that comment of context - but anyway, it got me
thinking. There's a sort of false modesty at work.

As I said, I prefer the work of the people I regularly watch online
to the swathes of happily self-proclaimed 'video artists' working in
conventional spaces in London... but I wonder how many of the people
I subscribe to would be comfortable describing what they do as just
 Art.

What I do, for instance, is not as clearly 'video art' as, say, the
beautiful work of the people I used to class as Video Art
Experimenta on my Videoblogs I Subscribe To page.

But it is. That's what it is. It's not a shopping list or even a
Show About Something. It's a creative selection and interpretation
of my environment using certain tools. I do it because I love the
creative act of doing it, and the community around it is an amazing
 part of that process.

Describing it as 'videoblogging' does *not* do it any favours. I
don't care if people say that it's just a description of the
distribution technology I use. It's more than that. For most
people outside of our tiny community - particularly in an area as
precious as the art world - the words Videoblog and Vlog have
unhelpful connotations of someone artlessly droning into a bad
quality webcam. These words stop serious people taking our work
seriously. It's almost like calling a video artist a 'TV person',
though even *that* has better connotations than 'videoblogger'.

So from now on, I no longer give a shit about whether it's
pretentious to call myself an artist. Fuck that. And all the good
video art I see around me, I'm going to stop worrying about how to
describe it. As far as I'm concerned, most of the people I subscribe
to are artists and filmmakers (and no, I don't care that we don't use
Film) and I value them as such whether they're comfortable with it or
 not.

We should all be more 'up ourselves'.

 Then we invade.

$600 is not a lot to cover two transmitters, two receivers and two lavs,

You'll find plenty used these days as certain frequencies in certain areas
are NG. Which makes me think that you should definitely have two very
different blocks of frequencies in your kit. You'll be traveling around, so
you'll need frequency agile transmitter/receivers which have 'blocks' of a
bunch of frequencies to which you can shift if a bunch of freqs are in use
 wherever you are.

Let me ask the guys @ the R.A.M.P.S. newsgroup what blocks might best serve
such an international lass as you. Are you mostly traveling to certain
areas, or do you have to be ready for any city / anywhere?

Probably because Christianity is the dominant religion so it's assumed - not
necessarily correctly - that everyone already knows all about it. It's hard
to be raised in the US without being aware of at least the basics of
Christianity, whereas Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. are far less
understood, which leads to travesties like a Sikh getting shot for wearing a

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Ideology

2008-03-22 Thread Deirdre Straughan
There is the demographic factor that Terry originally brought up: younger
people tend to be both more comfortable with technology (though there are
huge exceptions) and more liberal in their political/social views (again,
with exceptions). This probably accounts for a lot of the skew on YouTube
etc. Letters to newspapers, on the other hand, are mostly written by older
people.

Videoblogging is not as widely understood as we in this group might imagine.
I'm doing videoblogging (among many other things) for Sun Microsystems now -
a company which is certainly very technically savvy - and have a lot to do
in educating my colleagues on how they can shoot their own video and get it
online cheaply and quickly. So you can imagine how daunting it can seem to
someone who is not much of a technology user.

If you truly want to hear a variety of voices (and I know that Jay very
sincerely does), the efforts many in this group have made to teach others
continue to be very important.

Jan, thanks for the mic advice - works great!

Re: [videoblogging] your thoughts on tapes vs HD?

2007-12-10 Thread Deirdre Straughan
My instinct is to agree with you, but in a spirit of correct spending of the
company budget, I'm looking at the alternatives.

Raymond, the footage you sent that you said is at the highest possible
quality setting, how many minutes per GB can you record at that setting?

The reviews also talk about battery life with the Xactis being only about an
hour. Is it possible to run them off wall current while recording? An hour
will not be long enough for most of what we're doing, and having to fiddle
with batteries during a talk would be a definite turnoff.

A tape camcorder can be converted to a hard disk camcorder using a 3rd
party addon (hard disk or software+laptop), which cuts out the capture
process everyone hates in tape-based workflow.

I recently shot four hours of footage at a Jonathan Coulton concert to
send to Yahoo News on miniDV. FedEx was the best way to get it from GA

Re: [videoblogging] Re: do video blogger care about privacy?

2007-08-24 Thread Deirdre Straughan
I've been very much myself online for 25 years, from text to video (I still
mostly do text), and have sometimes been asked whether it feels weird to
have complete strangers know so much about me. If it felt weird, I wouldn't
do it. What I tell about myself online is not quite as open as it appears,
but anything I'm hiding is mostly out of respect for others' privacy, not
concerns about my own.

Sometimes protecting others gets me into gray areas. I'm beginning to
wonder: when are the stories of my life MY stories, free for me to tell,
though other people are big parts of those stories?

It's interesting to see that my daughter (now legally an adult) has followed
this path of openness without my really discussing it with her explicitly.
She's had one weird stalker incident (turned out to be a local teenager),
but not much else to feel uncomfortable about in spite of being far more
appetizing a target than I am.

The return for my openness is that I've made a lot of friends (and so has
Ross). I have usually been comfortable with blurring the lines between my
online and offline worlds - as those who came to vlogEurope last year know,
I had no qualms about inviting to stay in my house a bunch of people whom I
knew mostly via their videos (which, ahem, I'd hardly even watched). (If all
else failed, Andreas would beat them up for me, right? grin)

BTW, while we're on the subject: I'll be in the Bay Area from Sept 5-15 and
would love to see people! In San Francisco 5th evening through 8th am, then
Silicon Valley for a conference (Storage Developers - not exciting to this
group, but I am being paid to film it!), then back in SFO Sept 13-15, when I
leave to return to Europe.

Well, drat, and here I was all proud to learn (way after the fact) to learn

this - I didn't even know anything of mine was in the running).

I guess we can do The People's Vlog Awards or some such. If we want to. I
obviously didn't get to the Vloggies, but it seems to me that a lot of fun

Re: [videoblogging] Re: How much money to videoblog full-time?

2007-07-04 Thread Deirdre Straughan
I suspect that, in real life, you'll have to turn that question around: how
much is someone else willing to pay for you to videoblog what you love? And
that, in turn, depends very much on what it is you love to videoblog and how
interesting that is to others.

Yes, my job is mostly about marketing (and always has been, though I mean
marketing in a far wider sense than most people). As it happens, I love
hearing people's stories, and if I can hear them on video and share them, so
much the better. That can include stories that also have a marketing purpose
such as showing why a particular person loves to work for Sun Microsystems.
It's about Sun, but it's also about the person, and that fascinates me. So
we're all happy.

expenses plus a percentage for extracurricular activities. What
you're talking about is closer to what Jeffrey's issue was. A company
wants you to promote their business. To me, that's like any other
business deal. They need someone to promote them... You have the time

Re: [videoblogging] Re: How much money to videoblog full-time?

2007-07-04 Thread Deirdre Straughan
I've had occasion to ponder these issues (doing it for love vs. doing it for
money) in the context of writing. I have written a lot for almost all my
life, in all sorts of genres, and have gotten paid in various ways for some
of it. When I left Roxio in 2001, a few dozen readers of my corporate
newsletters (a very small percentage - we had 160,000 subscribers) liked my
writing so much that they said they wanted to read anything else I cared to
write, even if it had nothing to do with the CD-R stuff they were used to
seeing from me.

So I started my website for them and for me, and it was very liberating to
be able to write about whatever interested me. Over the years that has grown
in all sorts of directions - in the face of the conventional wisdom that
your blog should have one topic only. And it's starting to make some money.
Not enough to pay the rent yet, but not to sneeze at, either. I'd love to
make a living from the site, and I recognize that, consciously or
unconsciously, what I choose to write about (and photograph, and video) is
partly influenced by what I know about what my audience likes. Does that
make me a sell-out? Boh. So far I'm still only writing about stuff I enjoy,
and I suppose that counts for something.

FWIW, I went to a Cisco Expo here in Milan today, which was mostly boring

half million dollar videoconferencing system but did not demo it nor even

2007-02-28 Thread Deirdre Straughan
Seems to me that people need to (a) do fewer things that they might be
ashamed of and (b) NOT be ashamed of what they do and (c) develop a sense of
humor.

If someone gets drunk and makes a fool of him/herself in public now and then
but does not attempt to drive or in any other way hurt anybody, where is the
harm? Only in a faux-Puritan society that tries to punishes others for what
we do ourselves. If I were looking to hire someone, would I hold it against
them that they once did something silly and I have video evidence? Hell, no.
It'll happen to me one day. In any case, I wouldn't get particularly worked
up about people seeing me naked. It's a human body, big deal. I suspect
you've got one, too.

As for naked Verdi, that was one of the funniest moments I've ever seen in
vlogging. I hope he didn't take it down.

Re: [videoblogging] Vloggercon? (was Re: Tuesday FlashMeeting)

2007-02-23 Thread Deirdre Straughan
My thoughts/votes:

   - 2-3 days over a weekend in NYC - for me, and I suspect for many, a
week camping is not likely to be possible (I have family vacations and other
   factors to consider)
   - try to get funding to bring in worthy vloggers from other parts of
the world who otherwise couldn't afford it, e.g. Africa, Bangladesh,
Indonesia (I don't mention India only because I think a lot of Indians could
pay their own tickets). And of course Baghdad, if we can get visas for
them... - this part needs a LOT of advance notice as the US government is
such a PITA about letting foreigners in these days.
   - nothing wrong with us chickens, but let's try to expand the pool to
people who do videoblogging but don't necessarily consider themselves
videobloggers, e.g. some of the YouTube people - at least make an
   effort to invite them!
   - widen the circle in every possible way. Tear up the A List, forget
the same old names, invite the Z List. Get out and find people who are NOT
part of this group and, when/if they show up, make them feel welcome - a
risk at events like this is that old friends hang out exclusively with
people they already know, which rather misses the point. Much of the
coolness of vlogEurope was in spending lots of time with people I knew
nothing about before I had them sleeping in my family room.
   - No panels, no speakers. We're all makers here as well as audience -
why would we have an event where we sit passively and listen to the
so-called experts? WE are the experts. What format can we use to share
knowledge without descending into utter chaos?

Re: [videoblogging] Video Blog File Type Recommendation Request

2007-02-19 Thread Deirdre Straughan
I have more or less settled on the following, which I believe gives me the
best possible distribution with least possible effort:

FLV for viewing in a Flash viewer on my web page
SWF for viewing/download in some RSS feeds (I compress both of these from
raw DV/AVI with an old Flash edition of Sorenson Squeeze)
MP4 for iTunes (using QuickTime Pro to compress from raw DV/AVI)

ps Quesocompuesto is one of the few podcasts I've actually listened to and

Re: [videoblogging] Re: I am so disappointed in You all.

2007-02-19 Thread Deirdre Straughan
Red Nose day is meaningless in the US. I happen to be in the UK right this
moment so I know that it's a big deal here - you can buy red noses
everywhere (at least 60p to charity) etc. but it's a strictly British
institution and you can't expect Americans to even have heard of it.

Everyone is bombarded daily by requests for this or that donation (of time
or money), to think about this or care about that. We all have limited
personal bandwidth, and we choose the causes and institutions that are
dearest to each of us. I donate considerable time and energy to the
international school in India that I attended (as is evident from my
website). I'll probably be involved (again) with the Democrats Abroad next
year, getting out the vote. I give to Planned Parenthood even though I no
longer live in the US and it's of no possible use to me personally.

So, no matter how noble the cause, I'm all cared out. And, knowing the
caliber and characters of the people on this list, I know that the same can
be said of many or most of us: we are plenty involved and already giving far
MORE than the human or American average, in our time, our money, our
expertise, and our passion. We just happen to be giving it to other things.
So you can't expect us to leap up and take on a new charity activity just
because you ask.

And I'd agree with Josh that your insistence on the Digg aspect makes me
itch. How is helping your site get traffic going to actually help raise
funds on Red Nose day, especially when the UK media is already inundated
with coverage for it? In any case, it's not a Digg sort of thing. There are
zillions of articles out there on how to get Dugg, and, from what I've
read, this topic doesn't strike me as one that's going to be a winner. You'd
be better off trying to get the UK media to talk about it, and you have
already had some successes there, so I suggest you go for that.

[videoblogging] a gentle suggestion

2007-02-18 Thread Deirdre Straughan
...for those of you who run blogs.

I'm 44 years old. I've been horribly near-sighted since I was a kid, and now
my close-up vision is going as well - it's getting harder and harder for me
to read small type.

For some reason, the default font size on every blog theme I've seen is
tiny. I'm starting to regularly use Ctrl + to be able to read blogs at all.
Which gets pretty squirrelly with some layouts. And it's a trick that might
not occur to many less-experienced computer users. So most blogs, by
default, make themselves difficult to use for older people.

A lot of us out here in audienceland are over 40 and starting to have vision
problems (just you wait - it'll happen to you one day). So, if you want to
enlarge your audience, ENLARGE YOUR FONT.

Okay... let's count the things I have to worry about as a blogger:

- saying something that will piss off some religious nut (pick your flavor -
I despise them all) and cause someone to call for my death

- saying something or allowing something to be said on my blog which could
lead to lawsuits for libel, slander, etc.

- saying something that will later be raked up and used against me should I
ever decide to run for public office (whoops - blew that one ages ago)

- appearing to have video or anything else that someone in authority thinks
might possibly provide evidence of crimes they're not even sure occurred,
but would surely like to know about if they did

- in Italy, saying something that could be construed as an offense against
any religion (see http://www.beginningwithi.com/italy/living/opinion.html )

Uh, what were we saying about new media and the Internet giving us all
freedom to express ourselves...?

Maybe, but if I want, I can plug in my puter to a TV and watch the
internet. Cannot most people do this if it is so important?
But most of the -clips- quality is not meant for TVs, so I dont really
 bother doing that.
Besides, a 17inch laptop screen or 20inch desktop monitor is fine by me ;)

As long as it's only you and your butt isn't tired from already sitting in
an office chair in front of a computer all day, fine. But if I want to watch
with my family, huddling three of us around the monitor really isn't a great
option (though we have done it in desperate circumstances).

I have tried hooking my laptop to a TV. Never could get it to work. Maybe
that's me, maybe it's Windows, I dunno. But I'm not entirely stupid, and if
I can't do it, I suspect it's not going to be easy for a lot of people.

only once in four years.

Nothing against you, Bill, I've just been noticing lately how all the
traditional AND non-traditional news outlets I read every day talk about the
same damn stuff (how many articles about the iPhone does the world really
need?) and most are incredibly US-centric. Even when I set Google to not

Re: [videoblogging] Help me understand

2007-02-05 Thread Deirdre Straughan
We all have every right to judge other people, countries, and customs. They
may not agree with our judgements - they have that right.

I am absolutely not shy to say that laws like these are barbaric and
medieval. We can only hope that the people of Saudi Arabia some day succeed
in rebelling against this idiocy - it's clear that many of them aren't
particularly happy about it, either.

However... the arrestees, while foreigners, broke local laws. You must live
by the laws of the country you are in, no matter how stupid they are, and
you can't expect to get away with anything just because you're a foreigner.
Last year there were several highly-publicized cases of Australians
sentenced to death for smuggling drugs into Indonesia. I don't agree with
the death sentence for anything, let alone drug smuggling. However, it
seemed a bit much for the Australian government to expect these people to be
let off just because the laws are more lenient at home. If you're going to
smuggle drugs, you ought to at least be smart enough to research the local
laws and understand exactly what you're risking!

Similarly, a foreign teenager (I forget what nationality, maybe American)
was sentenced to lashing in Singapore some years ago, for graffiti. Again,
that's the local law - why should he get special treatment because he's
foreign?

The lesson here is that other countries are decidedly NOT like our home
countries in all sorts of ways, and it's a good idea to learn the ropes
before you go there.

Re: [videoblogging] Global Net Jamming?

2007-02-01 Thread Deirdre Straughan
One mistake the article makes is to lump YouTube and Joost into a single
category. YouTube, AFAIK, is paying for the bandwidth to pump out all that
video, one stream per view. Joost is P2P, with reportedly heavy bandwidth
demands, potentially even when you are not actually viewing (if they use
Skype-style supernodes - I haven't seen any mention of this yet). P2P
applications are very good at shifting the bandwidth burden from the content
supplier to the network at large. I can understand why the bandwidth
providers are upset.

 carriers
$112 per month. A high-definition TV viewer would cost $560. Unless the
YouTubes and Joosts of the world are willing (and legally permitted) to
 pay
some of those costs, the investments are unlikely to happen.

If network neutrality proponents have their way the Internet may be frozen
in time, an information superhighway with Los Angeles-like traffic
 delays.
The Internet doesn't need to be saved--it needs to keep getting better.

I decided to make a new videoblog just for that occasion:

Casey McKinnon just now showed her support by telling me that rumor has it
adults can't learn chinese well, so I guess this videoblog will document
 my
 total failure! ;)

Re: [videoblogging] Joost?

2007-01-16 Thread Deirdre Straughan
They are supposedly throwing the beta wide open now, so anyone interested
should go sign up at https://www.joost.com/betatest/ If I get any more
invites than the measly two I've had so far, I'll offer them here - I don't
think they're going to be worth much on eBay. grin

I've just downloaded the latest version. Still not impressed. In the
previous thread someone said that the plan is to enable video sharing etc.,
but so far I haven't seen any clear indication of this from the official
literature on the product.

I've also just noticed that, in spite of the scary NDA, it is now legal for
me to blog about it, so maybe I'll do that.

[videoblogging] a contest for the vlogWomen

2007-01-16 Thread Deirdre Straughan
Another contest opportunity, this one for the vlogettes. I suspect some of
you will enjoy this one - lord knows a lot of us are living in the fast
lane! (And some, like me, about to get run over by a semi.)

I can't participate myself because you have to be a US resident (yeah, I
bitched about it, but I do understand the reasons - it's way too expensive
to hire all the lawyers you would need to run something like this legally
worldwide). But I look forward to seeing what y'all come up with!

Re: [videoblogging] final response to my RSS query (?)

2007-01-15 Thread Deirdre Straughan
sigh I don't know what it is about the Internet that makes people assume
the worst and never give benefit of the doubt. When I used to answer the
webmaster email address for Roxio, I was amazed at the virulent mails I
sometimes got from people assuming that the company was out to screw them, I
personally didn't give a damn, my mother slept with donkeys, etc. etc. - all
before I had even had a chance to respond or otherwise!

It's true that occasionally this group has been spammed or otherwise
advertised to, and that email addresses published in the group have been
harvested and abused by the unscrupulous. But perhaps if people would take a
moment to ask what the perpetrator's intentions were before kicking them
in the teeth, we could all spare each other some unnecessary grief.

That's wonderful, Bill! Warmest congrats!

Hey I just wanted to let you all know that I followed in Jay and
Ryanne's footsteps and joined the Podtech Network this week. It's
probably a very similar deal that they got--I have creative freedom to
do what I want with my stuff, it's a licensing deal so I get to keep
ownership of my stuff. And they're paying me. Which is way cool. It's
a good feeling to think that someone liked your stuff enough to pay
you to do something that you really love doing. I really dig the folks
at Podtech (I got to hang with them this past week at the Bloghaus at
CES) and I think that they are doing the business side of this stuff
the right way. The process was relatively painless and I got great
help from Morty Wiggins from OuThink who has loads of experience
dealing with all aspects of the entertainment business.
(http://www.outhink.com) And I got legal help from Colette Vogele who
literally wrote the book on Podcasting and the law (I'm serious!
Google it!). Her web site is here: http://vogelelaw.com

So anyway I posted an announcement video on my site. You probably
won't get a lot more info from it than you got here. But you do get to
see me on video (a rare thing) and you get to see the orange walls in
my house. Here is the link to the post:

it's up now. thanks to those who emailed to let me know. i'm an
idiot. it DID work finally, though. with lots of edits done in-
phone and music added and everything.

and deirde, it didn't cost anything to email - the n93 can use
regular wireless internet - so i used a free wifi hotspot in a cafe
(which obviously didn't work as well as it should) to email it and
then my (open) wifi at home (which did). I LOVE IT!

I was very impressed. In fact, it rocked!
 This should be big.
Reminded me to try out Veoh again too.
But yeah, the UI was slick and simple and the video was mostly TV quality.
 Smooth experience.
ISPs wont nec like this and it raises the whole net neutrality issue.
But TVP is the real deal. And its still in early beta.
 Mac/Linux coming soon.
