Re: [videoblogging] Long and File Size: Revisiting the question
I personally like smaller vlogs. 3 minutes is long enough for me.I'm pretty impatient when it comes to download times. Assuming its entertaining enough to watch 30 mins, I would consider it.I also limit my videos to under 3 mins but that's usually because that's all the footage I have. My camera doesn't have much memory. CheersJoanhttp://rantingsofjoan.blogspot.comOn 1/16/06, Stephanie Bryant [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:I find myself revisiting this question every time I post a large file to my vlog. How much is too much? At what point will you (personally, yourself, asa vlog watcher):1) Stop downloading the file.2) Stop watching the movie (how many minutes, assuming it's not too boring). Just curious about the answers-- someone recently said they wantedlonger than 10-minute vlogs, because they wanted to really sit downand watch stuff, but I wonder about that. A 10 minute vlog is 30 MB, easily. A 40 minute vlog would be almost 100 MB? Is that worth yourtime, bandwidth, and download speed? Re: [videoblogging] Like It, Love IT Or Leave It..... A Rating Scale For VLOGDIR
Sounds like a simple rating system. I like. JoanOn 1/12/06, Michael Sullivan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hola!I'm looking to talk about this whole ratings business... I'm referring to top lists etc... not parental filters and all that.On VLOGDIR, for most of its life i have not enabled ratings. I toyed with it for a while using a simple 1-5 scale and it was referred to as Karma. Any rating was a positive rating and would help bubble the entry up to more exposure (If I displayed a top list which I didnt)Today, I had a thought this came after thinking of really complex rating algorithms. Here is what I decided to implement as an experimentScrew 5 Stars. On VLOGDIR, you can either Like a vlog, Love a vlog or Just Leave it alone. If more people vote that they Love a vlog, then the entry will simply state that... you guessed it...People LOVE this vlog (based on x votes). LOVE is red color fonted. If more people voted that they just Like the vlog... then it will say so. All else can choose to instead leave a comment on that entries VLOGDIR permalink if they have some feedback. After some time, I could list the entries that have received either of these votes and which received the most votes despite the rating.Later, I can also experiment by adding other variables to the equation such as how many hits the vlog received... I can also add a series of custom rating scales per entry... like a 1-5 for entertainment value and 1-5 for technical skill etceteraI could also include Feedburner metrics into the equations. Also, I could let people rate each individual video in a vlog, thus giving greater weight to the vlog itself. These votes can all get incorporated into some Master Top List (I cant believe i just typed that).Let's get back the basic point of this message and that is to let you know that if you can rate vlogs at vlogdir.com with a LIKE or a LOVE... or LEAVE IT please.Let's try it out... see who bubbles up. Suggestions? Feedback? Bugs? Thanks all.-- sull- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The hybrid or the meeting of two media is a moment of truth and revelation from which new form is born- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - http://vlogdir.com - The Videoblog Directoryhttp://videobloggers.org - Free Videoblog Hosting / Vlogosphere Aggregator http://interdigitate.com - on again off again personal vlog SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Use Explains YAHOO! The ol' forbidden fruit. Be honest now, weren't you the same kids who snuck a peek at Playboy a few years back? Parental Advisory is for parents to be aware and keep their kids out of trouble. I would say Thursday because it has one more letter. Other plus points is that it runs just behind Friday. :) I'm just reading amatuer fiction on fictionpress.com at work, a obsession of mine but it distracts me enough. Things thought provoking? I interpret it more as a statement. There are three things that can happen. 1. The nose grows -- truth -- nose shrinks. Refer to 2. 2. The nose shrinks -- lie -- nose grows. Refer to 1. 3. Nothing happens -- lie -- nose grows. Refer to 1. In the end the stupid nose will be so confused it will explode and there will be no nose. That's my hypothesis anyways. :) Joan On 1/10/06, Devlon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Unless he is psychic as well as being a undead piece of wood, nothing would happen. incorrectly predicting the future isn't lying ;)On 1/9/06, Joan Khoo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here's one: If Pinocchio said, My nose is about to grow, what would happen? Re: [videoblogging] Re: ClassRoom Lecture VBlogging?????
I agree. I would suggest that he further categorise his lecture topics that would fit into 3-5 minute videos. I would think most students would only want to review certain aspects rather than a whole hour of a lecture. The upside of this is that it allows him greater flexibility in chopping and changing his lectures/lecture topics and have smaller videos to edit and deal with. It would be more convinient for students to download key points they want rather than a whole lecture (take up less bandwidth for shorter time). Downside is that he has many little videos to edit and post. Just suggestions from a recently graduated, frantic note taking and filing uni student. Re: [videoblogging] Re: ClassRoom Lecture VBlogging?????
I fell into this same trap (my lecturers post their lecture slides online for students to print) and failed a few subjects. Its a hard lesson learnt but I didn't miss anymore lectures. It's recognizing that the internet is a supplement not a replacement of lectures. Unfortunately, not every uni student learns this lesson. Joan http://rantingsofjoan.blogspot.com On 12/19/05, B Yen [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/5953/ 'Course casting' lets students listen to lectures on iPods By Larry Angell | 11.23.05 | iPodSeveral universities across the U.S. have begun distributing lectures in digital form so students can download and listen to them on their iPods. Critics complain that the "course casting" of lectures cuts down on vital interaction with professors, and also lets students get by with cutting more classes."Could ivy-covered lecture halls become as obsolete as the typewriter? This fall, a dozen colleges across the country have introduced a controversial new teaching tool called course casting, aimed at supplementing—and in some cases replacing—large, impersonal lectures," writes Newsweek's Peg Tyre. "Although it has been around for less than a year, course casting has become as popular as a keg party on homecoming weekend. Students at Purdue University have downloaded 40,000 lectures since the start of the semester—not bad for a school with an enrollment of 38,000. Drexel, Stanford, Duke and American University have begun course-casting programs, too." - Well, I can comment on the value of recorded lectures as it was a major part my success at college. As a science major, there's a lot of note taking along with the lecture, more often than not I'd miss a piece here or there. For instance, many professors draw diagrams on the board and discussing it, most of us try to get the diagram down. I used a digital record and changed my style of note taking to better utilize this tool. It works great and I will never take another course without it. As far as the comment of interaction with the professor and student, there are two aspects, first, as I mentioned, there are other things in courses, ie the diagrams, that just won't work via a recording for obvious reasons, I never missed a day of class either, again, a science major. But, with that said, it depends on the professor, for some, all you'd need is a recording as even when you'd be in class to see if the lecture wasn't a pre-recored, if you know what I mean; for some professors, there is NO interaction.By kaioslider on 11.23.05 at 02:49 PM SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Typepad Use YAHOO! Hi everyone, I've been toying with the idea of being a volunteer trainer for seniors who want to learn to use computers. However I'm not sure how much time I can commit to being a trainer. After emailing a secretary of one such clubs, they've suggested giving a talk instead on certain softwares (e.g. using photoshop or word). I would like some feedback on what you think of this idea? I've been tossing the idea around but don't really know how to go about it. Cheers, Joan http://rantingsofjoan.blogspot.com YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "videoblogging" on the web. Re: [videoblogging] Some rules to vlog by.
Don't worry too much about what others think. You can't please everybody. Worry about copyright and trademark infrigement. You can't be too careful. Carry a camera everywhere and annoy everybody with it. You'll never know when you get the best film clip. Don't neglect your friends and family (those right next to you) even if editing and posting videos seem more important. Most importantly, love what you do. Otherwise, it's a waste of time. Re: [videoblogging] Digest Number 1444
My friends don't get it either. They think I'm just filming to embarass them. But that's not the point. I want to document what's happening now because its the normal and mundane that I want to remember. Sure it's not that interesting, a bunch of my friend messing around or just stopping to remember that I'm living in one of the most interesting cities in the world that most will never get to experience (Sydney of course :) ). In the end, all I want to do is to be able to show my loved ones (and strangers) who live far away from me my life. Can't make everybody happy, just concentrate on yourself. Theones who get it don't need convincing. Some people will just never get the concept of doing this (or anything) fora purpose other than money. I have gotten lots of questions from people about why I don't charge others to vlog. I suppose I could, but truth betold, my video skills are lacking to the point that I would either make asubstandard product or else I would spend way too much time making a good product and then resent not getting enough money for it. Plus, doing it formoney would take away the fun. It just doesn't feel right. All this reminds me of a story of the Buddha. He was trying to tell people about enlightenment and they didn't get it. So you never come back and liveagain? All of life is over? they asked. Why should we strive for that? The Buddha concluded that trying to talk of such things is like a frog trying to explain maturity to tadpoles. All the comments of banality and boring vs. interesting vlogs is reallymeaningless. Sure, some are more entertaining than others, but the beauty isin getting a glimpse into who someone is instead of what they do, which is the world many of us live in all day long. People ask what you do and notwho you are. Sometimes I lie just to screw with people because I hate thequestion. Seeing who someone is through their everyday life is fascinating. Seeing Ryanne's Thanksgiving Jell-o shots or Verdi's wishbone-hating fatheror your cat videos is the type of thing that makes my day. That beats thehell out of Friends or any other mind-numbing nonsense on TV. I think there really is commercial value in vlogs, but I'd be hard pressed toconvince anyone of that. I'd watch them instead of TV almost any time SouthPark isn't on or Animal House isn't showing. Just my two cents. Keep your chin up, Josh. The people who get it are yourreal audience. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Offensive Police Video
Yes a person has a right to express his views. However a person needs to respect the stance of his employers. E.g. A hospital takes an anti-abortion stance while some of its employees are pro-choice. It's employees are free to express their opinions as individuals. Its not a problem until they show up at a pro-choice protest in their uniforms idenfying them as employees from the hospital. It then confuses the public on the hospital's stance. In regards to the police, they were to be harmless jokes and they're expressing their opinions. There's nothing wrong with that. The main concern is how the public may interpret the videos which may confuse them of the state's stance in issues such as racism and homosexuality. If the videos in no way idenfied them as actual police officers (as opposed to people pretending to be officers), there would be no problems. It's not a question of the right to express personal views, it's whether it left entities open to misunderstanding and misinterpretation. Thanks for the link Steve! I'm sure the basic principles will apply in Australia as well. Randolfe, just for your info, its is also prohibited to take pictures within the secure part of the airport. I almost had my camera confiscated in Sydney Airport, won't be doing that in a hurry. :) And speaking of banned electronics, I've heard of experiences where there was a person who was on a domestic flight and was on his mobile phone the entire time. I did this about five times before discovering that all electronic equipment including cameras are supposed to be shut off during take-off and landings. I also thought of how footage of the huge Atlanta Airport terminal as the plane taxied to take-off might compromise the security of that area. In any event, only while I was playing with my camera during the beginning of the fifth decent did the stewardess tell me video cameras were not allowed to film during take-offs and landing. In any event, I have my take-off, flying, and landing video should I ever need some to use in a vlog. Just hope I didn't really put my own life and other lives at risk in the process...without even being aware of it. I knew about cell phones but they send signals through the air. I didn't dream that video cameras were also banned. I haven't seen any signs either during this occasion. But I have also heard of other people being told to put away their cameras. I can't speak for everyone but I always have to remind myself that blogging is in fact a method of publishing. Which is why copyright laws matter. It's not a matter of just sharing with your friends, it's sharing to the world and that's what infringes copyright. It doesn't matter if its the written word, an image, a soundtrack, a video or an idea. -Joan On 11/23/05, Pete Prodoehl [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Randolfe Wicker wrote: It's just not good net-etiquette to copy and paste entire articles. If the discussion thread continues for over five days (most do), then it is impossible for others to get the article without paying for it unless they are NYT subscribers. Well, as it's been noted, the NYT doesn't get the web: http://www.wired.com/news/culture/0,1284,64110,00.html Since The Immortality Institute is a 501 (c) nonprofit corporation, we act as a kind of repository for information. Let us know if that stands up in a court of law... Well, I buy a copy of the New York Times. I could cut out the article and show it to as many of my friends as I wished. Is it so different for me to share it for free with my more numerous friends around the world on the Internet? Yes. Showing your copy to friends is different that publishing something (you have no right to publish) to a world-wide audience. I'm pretty sure buying a copy of the NYT does not grant you redistribution/republishing rights. Re: [videoblogging] How Old is Dick Cavett?
I'm glad he took it well. It depends on the situation. I generally won't mind random questions (I'm rather random myself) but I would mind if someone told me I sung like a girl (well, not really since I am one). My friend once did an interview with the vocalist from the band Plaid Retina, it consisted of one question, and then ended. The question was: Why do you sing like a girl? I'm not so keen on the war on text. Don't get me wrong, I love audio and video as a medium. But I also have a love interest with the written word. That's how I feel. You said what I meant but in a more ranting kind of way. :) Joan On 11/23/05, Josh Wolf [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: War on Text? This is the most asinine idea that I have everencountered. First off, we're talking about a natural evolution thatwill or won't occur whether or not you decide to declare a supposedwar on text. Secondly, let's look at this historically, prior to the invention of the telephone, people wrote letters and many ofthese letters were quite eloquent; just watch a Ken Burns doc.Suddenly the telephone allowed us to communicate instantaneously andallowed us to have the banal conversations we have every day even when our loved ones were away. This point marks the decline of letterwriting. Before there was radio and then TV, books were a moreprevalent form of entertainment, and there is something to be saidabout the literary value of a well-written book that simply isn't comparable through video. I can list dozens more reasons why text isa valuable part of our culture, and the very fact that you'reengaging in this dialogue through a written mailing list proves it.So please tell me why you want to embark upon a war on text? Really the whole idea is needlessly provocative and altogether spooky...JoshThe Revolution Will Be Televisedwww.joshwolf.netOn Nov 22, 2005, at 7:56 PM, Joan Khoo wrote: I'm not so keen on the war on text.
