[videoblogging] Re: [video_vertigo] iPhone

2007-01-10 Thread Joshua Paul
Either way, I'm sure some enterprising young hacker will find a way
to install apps onto it.

If it syncs with iTunes, then at the very least RSS is available to
it (via sync). I'm going to assume QuickTime is implemented at some
level, too. Plus, if Safari is full-featured, then that opens
Javascript-QuickTime communication.

Is Flash there? Not sure. If not, it may be Apple's way to stem the
tide.

I guess the ultimate question will be how bare-bones the OSX install
is, and how much control you can have.

i knew that phone devices were going to evolve into powerful mobile
computers that can do most of what you do on a laptop
and even since its a June 07 release, i suppose thats about 6-12
months sooner than i expected to have something as awesome as this
 iPhone.
 definately revolutionary.

i just hope that there are not any weird stipulations with what
users can do on this device... user-freedoms... as they are
partnered with both web giants and ATT.

of course we all want to forge ahead with RSS to aggregate media
 direct to devices.
but its still an open question whether or not we can use anything
beyond this iPhone version of safari and other built-in apps on the
iPhone. can we install our own media aggregators? how can we use
 RSS on this thing?

either way, it does reveal a lot to us about how things will
evolve/change around this devices June release.
how it changes focus and needs and plans.

the future is near. the future is fast.

[videoblogging] iHD [was: Re: Are You Recommending HD Cameras Yet?]

2006-12-26 Thread Joshua Paul
Are you referring to ihd.org? If so, I visited the site and there's
really a lack of information. For example, it's a standards
organization with members from Media, Advertising, and Technology.
Who? There are no names attached.

Also, the iHD spec is:

-Shot in HD
-Edited in HD
-Aspect ratio: 16:9
-Video Bitrate: 2048 kbps
-Audio Bitrate: 192 kbps
-Framesize: 1280 x 720 progressive (non-interlaced)
-Formats: WMV, MP4

Just starting with Shot in HD doesn't provide a lot of technical
details. What basic bitrate qualifies? What about color space? Or is
it just dependent on resolution? Do framerates matter?

Also, why limit to WMV and MP4? If I can deliver audio-visual data
that adheres to the rest of the spec, why can't I claim it to be iHD?
Especially for an open standard? I would expect some type of
embrace of Ogg. Or is this an attempt to crush Flash/On2 VP6?

Don't get me wrong, as I'm 100% for HD delivery via IP networks.

On a side note, I'm writing a blog post about why I think (broadcast)
HD is going to rot on the vine.

On iHD and high bit rate files:

One of the things that helped popularize Rocketboom initially was
that I was one of the first to regularly distribute video content
 with enclosures.

At the time, the audience (audio podcasters) was growing a great
rate, but there was almost no video content to d/l.

This was a first to market advantage for those of us that implemented
 the specs.

I see the same thing occurring now for iHD. Maybe it wont take off in
the same way, maybe it will do nothing for those that adopt such a
file for distribution, though I believe there is a great chance that
it will, if people also respond to the content.

Have you met anyone with an HD TV? They often become obsessed and
fanatical about the quality. Its as if they put on glasses for the
first time in their lives and then become disappointed at anything
 less.

Our daily Rocketboom files are under 100mb and most people can play
 them right from the browser.

Also, while 640x480 is also a good way to up the ante on your files
for the upcoming iTV onslaught, iHD files can be in .mov format too,
and thus look great on bigger screens of any kind, HD or not.

[videoblogging] Re: Are You Recommending HD Cameras Yet?

2006-12-18 Thread Joshua Paul
Are you still watching videoblogs? Does it really matter that
Galacticast (or, insert favorite vlog here) isn't HD?

I completely agree that HD is beautiful, but I have yet to experience
it at home day in and day out. But in the end, I personally am more
interested in the content. I've heard some people say they could
watch paint dry in HD. To which I say, go for it.

I'm still pretty close to the tv industry - I own a software company
that caters to it - and most of the projects are just now migrating
to HD...and they're not shooting 1080p. We've had a difficult enough
time trying to figure out production workflows with 720p and 1080i.
I'm not sure how long it'll take to figure out and adopt 1080p.

What I'm interested in is what happens in the next 3 years. The new
thing being pitched is 1080p. The problem is, who's broadcasting it?
Will all the networks agree to it as the standard? Some are using
720p, others 1080i. If they do agree, how long will it take them to
switch? Finally, how does all of this play out with RSS as a
challenger for a delivery mechanism?

Negroponte (Meiser, thanks for the lead) refers to HD as 'stillborn'
in being digital, URL: http://www.amazon.com/Being-Digital-Vintage-
Nicholas-Negroponte/dp/0679762906 because of the speed of the
television industry vs. the speed of the computer industry. He also
discusses about an experiment by Russ Neuman where people viewed the
same video, on the same equipment, where the only difference was the
quality of the audio. His discovery? That the better audio changed
people's perception that they were viewing a higher quality image.

Personally, I've decided to keep my money in the bank until it all
plays out.

On a side note, I helped to produce a HD pilot for a major tv network
in 2000 (it didn't get picked up). I remember how we marveled at the
fact we could see raindrops on the windshield of a car, and could
actually read the numbers on a police officer's badge. This is back
when we were learning about producing using the new format, and
found out about such issues as audio noise related to fans in the
camera turning on after a certain period of time to help cool the
CCDs. Try tracking that one down in the middle of a shoot! :-)

don't have much choice in PVRs.

But, sorry, I can't watch SD content anymore. It looks like crap
 once you
have HD. Everyone who has bought a new HD set says the same thing.

Getting HD is a transformative experience.

The lack of support (and lack of content) is just a temporary speed

The requirements to enable your video are that you're using OS X

From what I recall, RoR is already installed in the Dreamhost

Any tips on making the learning process easier? There are numerous

who already have RoR experience. I started to go through the tutorial
on Dreamhost's wiki, but it assumes you know how rails apps work and
just need to get one working on your Dreamhost account.

Maybe I just need to put some more effort into it, but it is more my
style to get the app running w/ some sample code and let the hacking

Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

[videoblogging] Re: Bridging The Gap

2006-05-10 Thread Joshua Paul

If you look at the data from Netscan, you can get a feel for the
activity within a group, in general. From what I recall, this thread
originated with a discussion about the number of subscribers along
with the number of posts by various people, and an activity
percentage. I think the original post even inquired how we can get
more people active (hence bridge the gap).

I believe that we're not so bad, in comparison to other newsgroups
out there (and there are a lot). I'm bias, though, because I'm quite
happy with this group...even when it goes off topic. :-)

If you really want to figure out how to get people more active (which
I assume means a higher number of people who post) in this group, at
least from a scientific/sociological approach, you'd probably want to
find the more active groups in the Netscan data and try to figure
out what makes them different.

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think m4v files will Fast-Start.

On the technical side, just flattening the video file won't cause

for the Fast-Start option when exporting from your application;
there's a difference between flattened and fast-start.

2006-02-22 Thread Joshua Paul
I've mentioned this to a small amount of people, but I'll put it out
there to the 2000+ of the group.

I think there is a great opportunity for the aggregators to use
Bayesian-type filtering (think email spam filters) to help gather
videos of interest to the viewer. If the aggregator can ascertain the
context from the blog post (and possibly the related tags in a
directory like MeFeedia or FireAnt), then it can use that context to
determine the type of video. It could then filter the videos
appropriately.

Right now I have 373 unwatched videos in FireAnt. If it had a way to
learn what I like, it could then bubble up the videos I want to
watch.

Hopefully someone will run with this (MeFeedia, FireAnt, I/ON...anyone?)

My 2¢.

I'm playing around with the audio filters in Final Cut Pro but since I'm  pretty much an audio engineering novice, I have no clue how to use the  filters to reduce the noise. Here's an example: http://www.andycarvin.com/video/badaudio.mov It sounds like there are crickets in the background. There aren't. Any  suggestions on specific audio filters I should use? I've tried playing  around with hum remover but so far no luck. thanks, andy --   Andy Carvin acarvin (at) edc . org (until Jan 31) As of February 1: andycarvin (at) yahoo . com http://www.digitaldivide.net http://www.andycarvin.com

[videoblogging] Re: I've been vlogging in the dark, looking for the answers

2006-01-07 Thread Joshua Paul
You don't necessarily need a new camera. You can accomplish it by
lighting using IR. Here's an excerpt from Digital Video Hacks:

...The other trick is to add more light. While this might seem
illogical, there are types of light that your camcorder can see but
that you (or your subjects) can't. Specifically, your camcorder can
see infrared (IR) light, which is invisible to the human eye...

To see what I mean, try this: take a remote control, point the end of
the remote toward your eye, and press a button. You won't see
anything, because your eyes can't see the IR light emitted by the
remote. Now try the same thing, but pointing the end of the remote at
your camcorder lens. On your camcorder screen, you'll see a brief
flash of light from the end of the remote, because the camcorder can
see the IR light. And this is what you can use to capture video in
situations where there isn't enough light to record normal video: by
using IR light, you can illuminate the subject without annoying or
distracting it.

You can read the entire hack at: http://reviews.cnet.com/

And a link to the book:

My email won't let me send files that size and really large files are

Anyone have suggestions on how to do this?

Yes, it is possible. It will depend on what type of noise it is...is
it more of a buzzing, or a humming? If you have an editing system,
like Final Cut Pro, you can help the audio by using either a high-
pass (for low frequency problems, like a hum) or a low-pass (for high-
frequency problems, like a hiss) audio filter. You may also want to
look at SoundSoap from Bias (http://www.bias-inc.com).

Re: [videoblogging] Re: iTunes storage of XML?

2005-07-22 Thread Joshua Paul
Look in the iTunes Music Library.xml file (inside your iTunes
directory). You should find the xml - for files that have been
downloaded - is stored like:

key6499/key
dict
keyTrack ID/keyinteger6499/integer
keyName/keystringScooter Club/string
keyAlbum/keystringRant 24/7/string
keyGenre/keystringPodcast/string
keyKind/keystringQuickTime movie file/string
keySize/keyinteger7037504/integer
keyTotal Time/keyinteger158692/integer
keyDate Modified/keydate2005-06-30T04:09:37Z/date
keyDate Added/keydate2005-06-30T04:09:37Z/date
keyArtwork Count/keyinteger1/integer
keyTrack Type/keystringFile/string
keyLocation/keystringfile://localhost/Users/
josh.paul/Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/Podcasts/Rant%2024_7/Scooter%
20Club.mov/string

keyFile Folder Count/keyinteger4/integer
keyLibrary Folder Count/keyinteger1/integer
/dict

For those that haven't been downloaded...haven't found 'em yet.
Possibly in the iTunes Library (stored as a proprietary file).

Yeah, I see your point. Perhaps I'm just used to using NNW which
allows one to examine
the XML. Then, if there is an issue, the clever monkey could
perhaps examine it and see

what the issue is.

Sure, you can always hit the url with another app (browser), but
it's nice to have that
feature built-in. Sometimes I like to see exactly what my app is
parsing into it's DB, plist,

etc.

I'll need to poke around some more, I'm curious as to how iTunes
marks-up the as-yet-

downloaded files in the library.

Take care,

Why keep the orig XML around if you can parse, drop values into
pList

or Database, and be done with it?

Perhaps. H. If I was writing an RSS reader I would think
that I would keep the

thinking differently?

it does seem to have it parsed out and included in the usual

and just

converts it directly to it's native format?
