[videoblogging] Amazon adds video streaming events and stats
Hi folks, I noticed this announcement of a new feature from Amazon Web Services that relates to streaming video distribution and may be of interest to some here. Here is the AWS announcement: Amazon CloudFront Adds Access Logs for Streaming Amazon CloudFronts access log feature now works with streaming distributions. This means you can now get detailed activity records about every stream you serve from CloudFront. This information lets you answer important questions about how your customers are using your content. You can learn who is watching your videos, which videos they are watching, when they watch and when they stop watching. Every time Amazon CloudFront receives a streaming event like play, pause, seek or stop an access log record is created. Included in that record is the name of the video being streamed, the type of event, the number of bytes sent, the edge location serving the stream, the viewers IP address, and several other data elements. Activity logs are formatted in a W3C standard format, so they are compatible with a wide variety of tools and analytics solutions. Once enabled, access logs are written at least once an hour to an Amazon S3 bucket that you specify. There are no additional charges for access logs, beyond normal Amazon S3 rates to write, store and access you logs. Since we launched streaming, access logs have been one of the most requested features weve heard customers ask us for. Were happy to make this capability available starting immediately. You can read more about this feature in the Amazon CloudFront developers guide. taken from http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2010/05/13/amazon-cloudfront-adds-access-logs-for-streaming/?ref_=pe_8050_15319810 Here's a short url: http://is.gd/clftw Also, here is product description for CloudFront from http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/ Amazon CloudFront is a web service for content delivery. It integrates with other Amazon Web Services to give developers and businesses an easy way to distribute content to end users with low latency, high data transfer speeds, and no commitments. Amazon CloudFront delivers your static and streaming content using a global network of edge locations. Requests for your objects are automatically routed to the nearest edge location, so content is delivered with the best possible performance. Amazon CloudFront works seamlessly with Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) which durably stores the original, definitive versions of your files. Like other Amazon Web Services, there are no contracts or monthly commitments for using Amazon CloudFront you pay only for as much or as little content as you actually deliver through the service. to illustrate how one might apply this, here is a nice visual from a vendor offering iPhone encoding for S3, Amazon's Simple Storage Solution and Cloud Front. http://www.encoding.com/amazon/apple_streaming.php alternatively, you could just do the transcoding yourself ffmpeg. Here's an tutorial on how to set up a mass transcoder using Amazon's Elastic Cloud http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=691 Cheers! Hi That sure is a funny requirement considering situations like this: I have close friend who is a housekeeper for a member of the academy. The academy member is a well-known actor who is semi-retired (i.e. you only see him in reruns these days). He gets copies of *all* the nominated movies delivered to his home in Marin, but has little interest in watching them. My friend takes home almost all the movies and watches them with her teenage kids (score!) and they tell her what they like so she can tell him how to vote. Truth is, she knows a hell of a lot more about film than he does; so I guess this works out for the best. :) I wonder how typical this situation of proxy votes is and why we need to carry on with grand illusions like the importance of theater showings, especially when almost all the theaters in a place like Los Angeles are almost impossible to book for an indie or docu showing (I think there is only one indie chain left in LA today). I got this from amazon in 2005 and still going strong for me: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002IA5PA here's some basic info. hope it is useful and applies to newer models: features: there are fancier ones, but I am happy with what I got. it handles 1080p. can project front (white screen) or rear/backwards (nice for being able to walk in front of projected image) or upside down (mount on ceiling). lamp meter shows #of hours remaining (carry a spare anyway). multiple inputs: two video, vga, svhs/rca, audio in/ out. these are selectable, not composite (can't overlay inputs on this model). zoom. remote. auto image align from when you have to project at an angle (no trapezoids please!). carrying case. cost about $1000. eventually lamps are the real cost. can be as high as several hundred each. you can find good stuff for less or more. lots out there. in the end, i figured teachers probably new what worked best in general situations and harsh conditions at a reasonable price :) some tips: if you like a model, check to see if a similar model exists that outputs more lumans (e.g., it's brighter). this is especially useful if you have to work in bright rooms (e.g., can't cover the windows much). most wished for feature: the ability to not have to be so far away to make a big image. check the projection ratio. some projectors project large from short distances. In a small room, it is difficult to project a large image. would be great if one could have lens options like cameras, but generally there is little choice in low to mid range projects. specs will tell you image size to distance ratio. I need to move back about carry a VGA extender cable. often useful or necessary. same for audio cable from mac to rca if you have audio in projector. extension cord for power is good too. often the best spot for a projector is nowhere near the power outlet. works with video ipod! :) very cool here is some info from NEC on basics. from marketing, but still might be useful http://www.image-av.co.uk/projectors/Projector_In_The_Classroom_Image_AV.pdf markus http://apperceive.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Help!! need some help with drupal and dreamhost
Hi Milt Stan's info is correct if you are using ftp to upload media to your own site, but I suspect you (or users) want to actually upload via a web form (e.g., upload and attach a video directly to a post in drupal or wordpress). I have some Drupal sites on Dreamhost. I always like to increase my limits for uploads. Turns out that there are at least three php variable settings that effect any LAMP based content management system like this. More on this below. Usually, it is pretty easy to set those variable to allow larger uploads, but Dreamhost makes you stand on your head. Here are some instructions. I have not tried them. Fact is it's easier to move to better hosting. http://www.activecollab.com/forums/topic/1507/ On a good hosting platform, you can easily change these settings to suit your needs, but Dreamhost limits you (understandable when you consider how many peeps are on a single server). You can request higher limits, but they will probably want to talk you into a more expensive hosting plan. I am in the process of moving off of dreamhost for several reasons. All my reasons are performance, control and access based. Dreamhost has been inexpensive and a good service overall, but performance is too slow for any serious production work using database-heavy tools like Drupal. Dreamhost is also several hundred times slower than a number of competitively priced VPS services such as SliceHost. The other day, I noticed that there were over 900 separate users sharing the Dreamhost server I am on. Of course, dreamhost will be happy to sell you their VPS service too, but it costs more than others and still limits you to a greater degree than other host. Be aware (beware?) that places like slicehost give you a lot more control and, with that, a lot more responsibility to figure things out. In this case, it may not matter since dreamhost makes you jump through hoops anyway. I like that slicehost has an active forum and irc community to help out with these things. One more thing: drupal also has an active support forum and irc channel at #drupal-support. while there are a few folks here that may be able to help, there are a ton of us over in the drupal groups, forums and irc channels. jump on in! :) Markus On Mar 18, 2009, at 9:13 AM, Milt Lee wrote: Hi folks - does anybody here use Dreamhost, AND have a drupal site there? The pros generally said at least two, staging and the live site. Most also have dev sandboxes (throwaway copies of site, files and database). More than a backup, this is a place to test all upgrades and changes before applying to (or swapping with) live site. More work and complexity, but less risk (so maybe not more work after all ;) ) Like David said, you gotta do it (or get a pro), otherwise you are working without a net. 2. Two of the people who attended SHVH have recently started a biz service providing complete video site solutions by offering WP-based packages. I think we will see a lot more of this. Wordpress and Drupal based products and services. New customer fills out a form for what they want. Pick from $999, $1299 or $1999 packages and options. Then work directly with the a desginer on look within very well defined limits imposed by a specific WP theme framework. Sites turned around quickly (e.g., less than a day). Packages for monthly hosting and services in the $19-$49/month range. These guys will even supply aggregated content feeds for your site to add to your content. Backups, SEO (including posts to major sites like Facebook), newsletter, press release, the works. Not for everyone here, but I suspect they will be very successful, especially with small businesses with little or no tech resources and budgets. Also a question for everyone: Someone mentioned Episodic at the meetup. Has anyone used it since they were just a flash to ipod transcoding startup service? There were a few posts here last summer about the service (Noam are you still here?). Looks like it's grown up quite a bit. I'm waiting for a beta account. Looks like a competitor to Brightcove, Ooyala, thePlatform, etc., but with more features and nice looking UI. Perhaps this is another way to go? http://episodic.com Markus [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
[videoblogging] Videoblogging Flashmeeting
Hi folks, We set up a flashmeeting today 3pm-5:00pm US PST, 6pm-8pm US EST, 11pm-1am GMT+0 Link is http://fm.ea-tel.eu/fm/c6b655-16125 Please join in if you're free. Suggest your own topics or just stop in and say hello. I'd like to suggest one possible topic: what's a good project idea for eight people with eight cameras and eight walkie-talkies (in the rain)? we're having a super happy vlog house in ojai today and would love to hear some ideas. For those new to Flashmeeting. You don't need a webcam or mic, but it's more fun if you do. There is also a chat stream. You don't need to register to use it. You can go there anytime before or during the meeting to test and set your audio and video. There's a control panel. If something does not work (e.g., video), try another camera selection. Similar for audio. Please test your levels so we can hear you. I was surprised to find that there was no paid option to remove the ads. Can anyone recommend a similar service (with char!), but with an option for no ads? Any recommendations much appreciated. of interest to vloggers? Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video published by the Center for Social Media at American University http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/resources/publications/fair_use_in_online_video/ from the intro... WHAT THIS IS This document is a code of best practices that helps creators, online providers, copyright holders, and others interested in the making of online video interpret the copyright doctrine of fair use. Fair use is the right to use copyrighted material without permission or payment under some circumstances. This is a guide to current acceptable practices, drawing on the actual activities of creators, as discussed among other places in the study Recut, Reframe, Recycle: Quoting Copyrighted Material in User- Generated Video and backed by the judgment of a national panel of experts. It also draws, by way of analogy, upon the professional judgment and experience of documentary filmmakers, whose own code of best practices has been recognized throughout the film and television businesses. WHAT THIS ISNT This code of best practices does not tell you the limits of fair use rights. Its not a guide to using material people give permission to use, such as works usingCreative Commons licenses. Anyone can use those works the way the owners say that you can. Its not a guide to material that is already free to use without considering copyright. For instance, all federal government works are in the public domain, as are many older works. In most cases, trademarks are not an issue. For more information on free use, consult the document Yes, You Can! and copyright.cornell.edu. Its not a guide to using material that someone wants to license but cannot trace back to an ownerthe so-called orphan works problem. However, orphan works are also eligible for fair use consideration, according to the principles detailed below. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [videoblogging] MetaVid Archive
Hi all, I just saw this post about http://www.metavid.org/ looks like an interesting resource It is overseen by Warren Sack at UCSC and designed largely by his students Michael Dale and Aphid Stern. Its funded by the Sunlight Foundation and a grant from the NSF. The site houses every second of video footage from the Senate and House floor since January 2006. All of it is searchable online by the text of the speech (scraped from the closed captioning of the CSPAN broadcast), the name of the speaker, the session. You can search, with a really simple and effective interface, not only for what a certain person said on a certian topic on a certain date, but also cross- referenced by some of the information the Sunlight Foundation offers — so, you could request any mention of “health care” by anyone recieving more than X dollars from pharmaceutical industry donors. Any clip can be very simply embedded into a blog or website. You can jump to the stream of footage and indicate the start and finish point of the clip you want, and that can be added to a blog or website. You can help label clips for content, or even repair text errors in the closed caption transcript. You can combine clips (in an astoundingly nimble drag-and-drop interface) together, and put the montaged clip into your blog or website. via http://tarletongillespie.org/scrutiny/ Yahoo! Also video hosting at places like blip.tv, archive.org and others. Many folks host their own websites and use free blogging platform tools like http://wordpress.org, http://drupal.org and others. These often let you create both regular pages, as well as blog posts. Note that I use the word 'free' as in 'free like kittens'. (BTW FYI, the last litter here at the Dojo has easily cost over $8000 in food, vet bills, mouse upgrades and katnip over the past 10 years - worth every penny, but ouch!) Hosting services sometimes come with web design tools that don't suck. Alternatively, you can learn HTML and CSS and DIY with free alternatives to Dreamweaver (I like a plain text editor, myself) or you can hire folks to help with the design, but that will exceed the cost of Dreamweaver real fast. According to the MSDN blog that announced the change this change won't require any actions on the part of developers: It’s important (and cool) to note that this change will require no modifications to existing webpages, and no new actions for developers creating new pages. We are simply reverting to the old behavior. Once Internet Explorer is updated, all pages that currently require “click to activate” will no longer require the control to be activated. They’ll just work. http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/bb969055.aspx Yahoo! Using media_mover [1] to do transcoding of uploaded videos, xspf_playlist [2] to build dynamic playlists, and flvmediaplayer [3] to render the player, we can now have a video player which not only plays user uploaded content, but can both recommend content based on a views [4] or play a list of content generated by a view [5]. FLV Media Player [6] will let you take the player and embed it in a page off site if desired. Further, you can use a dynamic configuration file for the player which allows you to alter the appearance and behavior of embedded players already deployed in the field. http://groups.drupal.org/node/9016 markus [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

This lead to some research about firewire and I must say that there is a confusing picture between apple's claims of hot swapping and chaining devices and some device manufacture's warnings. While canon has little to say on this, sony instructs users that they will void warranty if they do not follow proper power up procedures and requires removal of all other firewire devices!!! hello, can someone say video editor with a camera and a drive? it also appears that even 6-to-4 pin connections can leak static charges or are prone to lose connection issue that can fry 10's of 1000's of dollars. It appears pros use special firewire adapters to ensure no power out to devices that are not designed for it. General advice is to always connect firewire to computer first to reduce chance of charge going to camera while connecting up. Apparently be very careful even inserting directional plugs so as not to chance a spark. Hopefully a warrenty repair. Most of the videos there are either MPEG-4 or MPEG- 2 files, and here's where the problem comes in: I edit with Final Cut Express. When I try and import the MPEG-4 files, the program tells me it's an invalid file type. When I try and import the MPEG-2 files I get the video, but I lose the sound. Do I have to convert the MPEG files to .MOV files? Is there a free way to do this, or do I have to purchase Quicktime Pro? The solution to this problem may be fairly obvious, but I am not tech savvy, so any help would be appreciated. which of the archive mpeg4 files are you using? you probably know, but be sure it's the one that ends with _edit.mp4 in the url (the so called 'hi-res' version) i have not had any problem editing these with quicktime pro or in imovie. i don't know about FCP, but lots of folks here have utilized these videos, so someone here should be able to relay experiences using FCP. i've also accessed the mpeg-2 files using quicktime pro with the mpeg-2 addition (yet another QT tax). this was unsatisfactory for two reasons (1) the apple addon is for playback only, not editing and (2) most of the mpeg2's on archive suck in quality (imho). the mpeg4 edit versions are more recent and seem to have been created with more care than the mpeg2's. In fact, the mpeg2's often don't even open in anything (after a 2GB or more download!!!); just a bad file in those cases. alternatively, you could look at the other internet archive where they *sell* the high quality versions of these. both are run by the same folks. markus [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
