FireAnt uses the Quicktime API, so yes you will need to install
Quicktime if you wish to view Quicktime videos (if you have iTunes
then you also have Quicktime).

We are not illegally reverse engineering any codecs, but rather using
the native APIs that support the various codecs/formats.

One exception to throw into the mix... APple made up a whole new codec
and file extension/mime-type for the new video iPod, which certainly
didn't help video codec matters.

There was no such thing as m4v a few weeks ago before the video iPod.
The next release of FireAnt will support m4v... stay tuned.

Yes, this is correct.

Unfortunately because many people are likely to just use the apple

much you adding m4v support to fireant.

Yep, this is exactly what we're doing.

This is also why we chose the development path for vSocial that we did.
I personally can't wait until Flash 8 is a bit more ubiquitous, because
the On2 codec (as HORRIBLY slow as it is to encode) is a huge
improvement over the existing codec. This is also why we keep the
original format for feeds as well as offer a transcoded M4V (which I
just confirmed works as intended.. posting later about it) feed for
iTunes. Too many codecs for average folks to have to handle. Heck, I
barely like having to keep up with all of them. :)

Re: [videoblogging] Re: mov in to wmv

2005-11-17 Thread andrew michael baron
With all of my rejection of .wmv files combined with my hopes for a
single CODEC, I have learned that the number one reason to
provide .wmv files is for people who do not have the authority to
install on their machines.

Many people at work do not have access to install. Also people in
lesser developed countries often sit at cyber cafes and can not
install software from there either.

Most of these people are on Windows and can by default play .wmv files.

Its a lesser option, but often the only option.

thanks Josh. We will check that out. Not sure if we will actually go
that route but I've had a number of emails from windows users who
can't view the content so I'm considering adding a wmv file as well.
 Cheers.

If you're on Mac, check out Flip4Mac plugin for Quicktime. It is
 totally worth it.
You can encode WMV and also play and edit WMV using QT player/pro.

As for importance of having multiple file formats, I think its a nice
to have, but not a need to have. Depends on your goals and your
 intended audience.

This video just supports my claim that whenever Flash runs smoothly, its full of horrible artifacts because it requires such a low bitrate to work well. Note that when ever the camera pans, the video turns into a pixel grid of about 15 by 15 squares.Lets see a 600 or 700 mbsec flash file that is as smooth playing and scrolling. Also, the poor platforms that I referred to below may not allow the user to upgrade to the latest flash application. On Nov 17, 2005, at 4:46 PM, robert a/k/a r wrote:Andrew, I wouldn't discount Flash.IMHO the quality of this VideoEgg file is quite good, have a look:http://www.thomasblard.com/thomasblard/2005/11/arroseur_arrose.htmlthe tinyurl is:http://tinyurl.com/822zrcheersr--URL: http://r.24x7.com Deconstructing the status quo, collaborativelyOn Nov 17, 2005, at 3:40 PM, andrew michael baron wrote: With all of my rejection of .wmv files combined with my hopes for a  single CODEC, I have learned that the number one reason to  provide .wmv files is for people who do not have the authority to  install on their machines. Many people at work do not have access to install. And dont leave us over here at DivX
out either. We have some things cooking back in the lab. First small trickles
will probably reach public beta in the next month.

We might not have the money that the other
guys have, but we already beat everyones expectations in the DVD market.

I don't fully disagree with you.

I see the panning problem on the television too, and it will most likely go away when 1080p DVD player (and media:) arrive.

The trade-off is accessibility, if the choice is a pixel blur during a pan vs not being able to plat the video then we all know the answer.

Regarding allowing users to upgrade would that not apply to the Windows player as well?

The free tool is cool but I'm having issues with posting it. I get this error
when the Windows Media Player open up

The DIV3 codec is required to play this file. To determine if this codec is
available to download from the Web, click Web Help.
