Yeah, I completely disagree w/ Quicktime causing Windows/Linux users
to be out of luck. First of all, iTunes has captured the market for
now... it works on both Windows/Mac and is bundled with Quicktime.
Second, Linux users have many options and are used to hunting down
workarounds.

IMHO, topic-based vlogs benefit more from being in iTunes than any
other viewing method (including embedding videos on their site). I've
help a handful of action sports companies create video podcasts and
each has had great success with Quicktime (iTunes).

Each of the sites I've worked on show stats very close to Ridertech...

92.6% = iTunes
0.02% = Yahoo
0.008% = Unknown
0.007% = Bloglines
0.003% = Mefeedia
0.0008% = FireANT

Actually, the other sites show an even higher percentage of iTunes
readers.

Don't get me wrong, I DO think that Flash on the blog (w/ a QT
alternative link) and a Quicktime feed for iTunes is the best. If you
have the Flash FLVs already, you can also easily add a Flash feed.

So where is the problem? Do you think WMV should get more play?
Vlogging already has a high production cost and I do not see the value
in adding WMV right now.

Just my two cents.

Whoa! Adobe has been hyping the penetration of what they call Flash
with some very misleading figures. First, there are several generations
of Flash. The current release is Flash 8. Please go this site and see
for yourself:
http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/version_penetrat\
ion.html
The 98 per cent -- or thereabouts -- penetration is for earlier
versions. Flash 8 has much better quality for streaming than the
earlier versions and, in my opinion, is well worth looking into for
vlogging.

But. And it is a big butt. You need a Flash 8 Player to look at Flash
8 video. It is a plugin for the browser, but there have been many,
many, problems with the upgrade for IE on Windows for people who are not
computer literate. Adobe has been dreadful about promoting the players
for the general public. I have been dealing with this issue since
January, 2006. People who have just gotten used to email and Google
searching are terrified to update because the process is -- to them --
very daunting. You know, people over 30...

While many of the visitors to vlogging sites are comfortable with the
update process, I have found that the great unwashed of the general
public gets frustrated with the upgrade process.

While it is true that adoption rates for Flash 8 are climbing, none of
the major aggregators such as Youtube, Google Video, etc. are streaming
Flash 8. If you want to see what computer chaos would be like, imagine
what would happen if they converted.

On2 Technologies, the outfit that licenses the Flash 8 compression code
to Adobe and others helped me with the player problem by putting up a
site that will do an express install (no need for user intervention) for
all platforms. You are welcome to use it and link to it:
http://on2.com/flashtest

Now Adobe is making noise about a Flash 9 player coming out very soon.
Does that mean that Flash 8 will be replaced? It only came out in
September of 2005.

If you want to see a comparison of the two versions and an explanation
of the player issues (with an updater),
you can see how I dealt with it on
http://hestakaup.typepad.com/hestablog/2006/02/flash_test.html

Before we continue to debate the various versions of Flash, can
someone post hard numbers for the penetration rate of Quicktime and
Windows Media? My bet is that both are less than Flash... and there
is no doubt a downside to each.

Seems like the best option would be to output both Flash and QT. You
can use the Flash by default on your blog, but also offer a QT link if
they do not have Flash. Better yet, set a cookie for their
preference. Then of course offer a QT feed for iTunes/iPod.

As for the wiki's accuracy, lets just add a link to the Flash
penetration page. It is continually updated and straight from the source.

[videoblogging] Re: Voxmedia wiki: Flash video

2006-05-23 Thread Chuck Olsen

I'm having a hard time finding hard numbers. Here's an article
in Publish magazine putting Quicktime at 59% and Windows at 50%.

http://www.publish.com/article2/0,1895,1780061,00.asp

I don't think there's any question Flash has a bigger installed user
base than any other video format. That's why YouTube, video ads, etc.
are using it. That's why, after many thousands of visits, I've never
had a single person say your video won't load unless I did something
wrong. :-)

That said, there are still pros and cons, and I completely agree that
embedding Flash while offering a Quicktime feed is an excellent choice.
That's what I do. Here's a good article discussing Pros and Cons of
Flash video. It's generally more difficult for a novice to create Flash
video, though services like Blip and YouTube perhaps make that a
non-issue:

Seems like the best option would be to output both Flash and QT. You
can use the Flash by default on your blog, but also offer a QT link if
they do not have Flash. Better yet, set a cookie for their
preference. Then of course offer a QT feed for iTunes/iPod.

As for the wiki's accuracy, lets just add a link to the Flash
penetration page. It is continually updated and straight from the source.

Thanks Chuck! Although the Flash/QT combo is the best option, I'm
still too lazy to do it. iTunes represents 90% of our video traffic
so I'm in no hurry. Plus, high-action video like skiing/snowboarding
doesn't look very good in Flash.

I don't think there's any question Flash has a bigger installed user

are using it. That's why, after many thousands of visits, I've never
had a single person say your video won't load unless I did something

That said, there are still pros and cons, and I completely agree that
embedding Flash while offering a Quicktime feed is an excellent choice.

That's because you are referring to Flash 7 (MX). The current
version, which has not been adopted by YouTube, Google, etc. is Flash
8. It has outstanding quality for streaming at a bitrate that does
not need buffering on a medium broadband line. But it needs a browser
plugin in order to play. It can be very scary for people who are not
computer literate to install this plugin on Windows IE which is still
the most popular browser configuration.

I have been using Flash 8 through the On2 Flix Pro encoder with great
results on my end but the user experience has been dreadful.

Finally, On2 Technologies helped me with this problem and came out
with a detecter/updater site that actually works. You are welcome to
use and link to http://on2.com/flashtest/

Now Adobe is making noises about coming out with Flash 9 quite soon.
Flash 8 was only released in September, 2005. It is very discouraging
unless they come out with a very simple way of upgrading.

I think John makes a great point here. My sites generally target
people who are just now getting comfortable with email (and are not
yet profficient at it) who think it is a big deal to do a Google
search. There have been a number of problems with the upgrade to Flash
8 ranging from people on networks at work who do not have authority to
alter software to people who went on the adobe site and then panicked
when they had to do an install for the first time to people who had
been warned not to add anything at all for fear of viruses, spyware,
trojans, etc. It was not until I put up many many links to
on2.com/flashtest that I was able to get people to upgrade.

I am sticking with Flash 8 for one reason. It will stream out good
quality video at a decent bitrate without buffering during normal
internet loads. I have making what may be the most narrow niche vlogs
in the vologosphere: Icelandic horses. No matter. But in order to
show the fluidity of the horses' gaits I had to be able to compress at
30 fps. I tried every variety of QuickTime but I could not get it to
stream with the quality I needed without stuttering. My target
audience could care less about iPods or re-mixing and editing. They
just want to sit down at the computer and watch a movie about
something that they happen to be passionate about.
