There are a number of people from this list who have had experienced
teaching videoblogging to these kinds of communities. I know Rupert
taught Roma kids in England. I think Kerry is currently running a
program for Somali(?) students in Ohio. Ryanne and I have taught
different workshops as well. Like this:
http://ryanedit.blogspot.com/2006/10/tibetan-kids-vlogging_29.html

I cant think of any one place where there is a collection of material.
Be great if there was. Maybe ask some more specific questions. Or
others can chime in.

We've had discussions here before about the problems of teaching
videoblogging, especially in low income/education areas. First its
difficult to get access to technology (hardware+broadband) on a
regular basis. Maybe this is changing with the popularity of smart
phones. Then it's a matter of the time it takes to learn how to tell
stories. Editing isnt easy. People are shy. Culture clashes can be
difficult. But all this is changing each year as videoblogging becomes
more normal.

Re: [videoblogging] Vlog Europe Update!!!!

2007-08-01 Thread Raymond M. Kristiansen
Hey all,

Short version:

Yes, VlogEurope 07 is on! September 1st-2nd, Heidelberg, Germany.
News and related discussions

Long version:

Gosh, it has been a long time since I followed the conversations over here
at the yahoogroups!

Yes, VlogEurope is a go - in 1 month from now! If you attended VlogEurope 05
in Amsterdam or 06 in Milan, you know what to expect. An intimate
atmosphere, lots of discussions in the corridor, or the cityscape, or the
nature, some good eating, and overall a setting that is a bit less about the
hype and a bit more about the discussions, the questions, the interaction
with other videobloggers.

When I think back at videoblogging since it has developed when I first
started doing this - it is an amazing thing. Back then, bandwidth was our
biggest worry. I remember Ryanne Hodson or Michael Verdi talking about their
bandwidth issues. Then, Ourmedia came around, and then blip.tv and youtube
and later a zillion other networks and services catering to our use. The
scene has changed, but some of the questions still remain.

I remember one of the topics at VlogEurope 05 in wonderful Amsterdam was
"long-term vlogging". How do we manage to do this in a long-term manner? How
do we make sure that our children and grand-children have access to this
media? Still, it seems like the internet archive is one of the safest bets -
at least they DO promise you that they will keep your media forever (even if
that is not possible beyond a certain timeframe).

This year's VlogEurope is, like the others, mainly a meet-up of
videobloggers. We might have a stage, and some presentations, and sponsors
who help us with covering the costs of the event - but in the end, it is
still about the VlogEurope atmosphere - the discussions, the meeting with
old and new fellow vloggers, the probing into questions that mean something
to you and the others.

VlogEurope is, like Jeffrey said, taking place the same weekend as PodCamp
UK. Of course, that is a shame in one sense - that means that less UK people
will be present at VlogEurope in Heidelberg. But on the other hand, it could
be a very interesting opportunity to work with space; physical space and
virtual space - as arenas for discussions. What questions are being probed
at PodCamp UK that might interest the people at VlogEurope? How does this
relate to other conferences taking place - maybe that weekend, or at other
times? How do we keep track of all the discussions? How do we Further them?

VlogEurope came into being from discussions centered around the european
flashmeetings in 05, where we realized that - heck! we want to meet!. I want
to keep faithful to that basic premise: Meeting other videobloggers from
Europe and beyond.

This year's VlogEurope has been a lot less advertised than for instance last
year's event in Milan, which was wonderfully hosted and organized. Some have
asked: Is VlogEurope happening? Of course it is! September 1st-2nd,
Heidelberg, Germany. Be there! :) We are currently negotiating with a few
companies to try to get the expenses covered so that you don't have to pay
for attending the event as a videoblogger.

Having been very inactive in the vlogosphere the last year or so (basically,
since The PAN imploded), I have looked at the scene / market with a mixture
of dread and hints of that old old enthusiasm (an example of the enthusiasm
is expressed here: http://www.dltq.org/v1/?p=64 ).

Today, YouTube and CNN partner together. There are similar attempts at
bridging the gap between the online audience and real-life politics taking
place all around the world. (One of the interesting projects I follow is
"WebCameron": http://webcameron.co.uk/ ). A question to me is: What IS
happening around Europe? What is happening in Portugal, or Poland, or
Bosnia-Herzegovina, or Finland? How is videoblogging working to integrate
the European community (within and outside the EU), or link the local with
the global? How do language barriers create sub-cultures that are invisible
to each other? For instance, in Norway there is a pretty large community of
people who publish videos at www.snutter.no - here is a video I just found
of a local politician running at the upcoming local elections:
http://snutter.no/app/viewMovie.action?id=7946
This video is locked in within the snutter.no community. Is this good
practice?

How aware are we of what is happening in other countries? Are we perhaps too
busy exploring our own web2.0y circle of friends or acquintances?
http://www.globalvoicesonline.org/ is a great resource - where are the
others? How good are we at pointing at new sources?

Ok, that was a big sidetrack - my point was to show that VlogEurope is not
just an isolated event, but is part of an ongoing discussion. I look forward
to seeing many european videobloggers at VlogEurope (sign up

Re: [videoblogging] vlog history project

2007-07-09 Thread Richard (Show) Hall
Michael,

I'm definitely aware of the wiki (and have a link to it on my vlog history
resource page I put up).

This is a great resource and it was one of the things that motivated me to
finally start this project.

I have contributed stuff to the wiki already, will continue to contribute,
and plan to study this wiki a lot as part of the project.

If anyone does make a video about their own history, of course, it would be
great to include it in this wiki.

Thanks for the reminder and for setting this up.

This is a really good reminder. I don't think my viewers expect high
regularity, but I am past-due for a post. The next post slated for
release is going to be a nightmare of editing, and after doing three posts
in three days at the beginning of the month, I haven't made the next post
a priority. We've been using the time to rethink certain parts of
production, do some website overhauls, and plan for a second vlog that
we're getting ready to launch.

You're right, though, that one should at least put up a little news/clip
show or something every once in a while as a keepalive. We'll have to
think about doing that very soon. Oddly enough, our subscriber count has
soared, almost to the point of doubling, during our current drought.

Much of the knowledge from this group can be found here:

we should all be adding/editing it as we continue to learn more so new

I still think if your video in a video*blog* can not suffer by being
removed from its blog then it is closer to tv than blogging. So I'll
hold out for video that is closer to blogging on that spectrum,
though I'm happy to admit I'm going grey waiting

So what they produce is a vlog then, as they are the ones logging the
video, what the creators produce is video to be logged and so they are
not vloggers and what they produce is not a vlog. Unless...

Like what I did at Carnoustie, they are producing a video which logs
something, in our case, the run up to The Open 2007; in which case they
are vloggers.

So, to me, the term only describes a small sub-section of our
population. The more diverse the population, the better.

When someone engages in the regular activity of posting online video,
be it aimless, their own show or their own favorite links, in each
case, its a an ongoing log of videos.

YouTube (which uses the word 'vlog' in their interface), Blip and
many other blog software packs are content management systems for
logging data, be it text, images, video or whatever.

Video specific sites like Youtube and Blip are designed specifically
for the activity of logging video, or, vlogging.

Re: [videoblogging] vlog

2006-12-08 Thread Nox Dineen
Given the amazing breadth in the scope of what's produced under the name of
"vlogging" I'd have to agree with you. It generates an expectation of merely
a multimedia blog.

Plus, as an admitted linguaphile, I just hate the word. I'm curious, though,
how many people pronounce it phoenetically and how many say it
"vee-logging."

I think we can all agree that a much more hideous word (although a raging
awesome concept) is glogging . (I don't mind
telling you that I almost peed my pants with glee when I found out I may be
able to get my hands on an Eyetap and join the
"cyborg logging" weirdos.)

Adrian already pointed to Textation, but I can attach some comments. When
using text tracks I have found no way to change the color of text links.
Sucks, but that's how it is. You can adjust font size, type, color and
more by using text descriptors:

If you want image links the free way is to use SMIL, the easy way is to
use eZedia.

You need to wrap it in another format like a MOV (so you have MPEG-4
video/audio inside a MOV file) to get links and other kinds of good stuff.

Your server is not configured for opml files. The file is being sent as
text/plain where it probably should be sent as text/xml or something like
that.

See, and I think it can't be that hard, it's just that everyone wants
to make an online/web service, that people will pay for or they can
add advertising to, and nobody's willing to make a simple client
anymore. QT Pro has "convert for 3gp" export option. And
AppleScript/Mail (on Mac) has "Send by email." There actually aren't
that many variables: 3gp plays on most video phones software-- it's
the standard. And email is a standard as well. I think it's just a
matter of putting them all together with an RSS reader.

As it stands today, I could *probably* AppleScript the part of sending
the 3GP video files from my Mac to my phone via Bluetooth, but there are
just so many variables, email, Bluetooth, phone-connector cable...
Playback software on the phone, etc... It's a nice idea, but it seems
pretty niche right now. But if you do find something, let us know!

It's the "they told me not to" appeal about it. But I find it's an effective quick fix for identifying porn. Now you have to figure out how to flag them automatically, hopefully the amount of porn won't increase significantly or exceed the number of other vloggers (fingers crossed).

Re: [videoblogging] Vlog Santa and The Ethiopians

2005-11-27 Thread Randolfe Wicker

Chuck, mnstories looks great.  However, your
description of that demonstration being "of Carter" was a bit misleading.
They were just demonstrating to get Carter's attention and help.

Your vlog Santa project sounds most
interesting.  One idea I would like to work on (feel free to steal it)
would be to (1) go to a "Santa School" and vlog about how Santa's are taught;
(2) follow a poor marginable Santa who is doing this because he needs the money
and see how he reacts to rich kids demanding fancy toys and/or poor kids asking
for things their parents couldn't afford, etc.; or (3) vlog Santas talking about
the events of their day as they change out of their costumes or sit around
drinking coffee, etc.

I really like the idea of a vlog called "Santa
Talk".  That would be so fascinating.

So go ahead. You're as qualified as anybody to be a vlog critic,
probably more so since you've been watching them for a while and
obviously care. And we both agree that Zadi's work is fantastic, so in
my book, you're a smart critic. On 9/27/05, Mat Wall-Smith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Everyone is a critic. That's how blogging works. See something you have a
comment/critique for? (Video)blog it. See something you agree with?

Re: [videoblogging] Vlog group project/competition

2005-08-29 Thread Michael Sullivan

what I had proposed a while back was music video experiments where each
week or month, a song was selected (creative commons remix) and
participants make a music video
this is something I have initiated in the past elsewhere and what
results is very interesting, I think.  You get to experience
various interpretations of the music.

i have a project in queue called openmusicvideo.com to serve this
concept, eventually.  But it can just as easy be a loose project
played out here.

overall, i like the idea of such collabs whether topic based or
using music... we'll be seeing more and more of this as the vlog/remix
culture matures some more.

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but is there a
vlog award of
any kind? If not should there be? If so what would be the categories?

My $.02:

Best personal vlog
Best reporting vlog
Best art vlog
Best public service vlog

These could be for single shows or for a series. Then there could be
technical awards:
editing, special effects, sound, etc.

This is a new format that is sometimes also referred to as mpeg4avc.
Right now it is ony a bit better than standard mpeg4, but with time it
has great potential. I think it's a bit early to think about using it
because few people have installed software for viewing it.

> Question 3 - As a Windows user, should I purchase Quicktime 7 Pro so I

Not to get the H.264 codec but it might be helpful otherwise. I
don't know the details of the possibility here, but I hear some people
have bought license for quicktime 7 even though they have a quicktime
6-license. If you have a zero-budget, is it possible to give away the
license to quicktime 6 to tilttv, or is it connected to a single
person??

> Question 4 - How can I publish an .mp4 file?  Is there a reasonably

Here is my real answer ;-) I would like you to try out vided.org,
both as a possible learning tool as well as a vlog publishing
platform! Vided.org automatically converts your videos to mpeg4 and
also publish them on a vlog, like http://tilttv.vided.org/. OK, it's
not finished yet, but if you can overlook a few bugs you can at least
get a feeling of it.

Your main challenge with vided.org might be that there's a 10mb upload
limit, which means that you have to limit the size of your videoclips.
The intention is to use short clips of about 5-30 seconds length and
bind them together using SMIL. This can be done using vided.org.
Another challenge is that there's (so far) no real "editing" going on
except changing the sequence and length of the videoclips.

I'm planning to let a class of high school students to use it as a way
of being active students, being creative, collaborative, discussing,
sharing media and creating new films with the help of other's. You
might have some ideas about this as well? I'll be really happy to hear
about them if you do!

I'll send you an e-mail with user and password.

I'm playing with Avid Free DV ($free download) and the new QuickTime7
(also $free) and it seems I can create h.264 this way. So you shouldn't
have to pay for QT Pro. But in doing h.264 you will exclude most
Windows users, since QT7 is brand new and almost nobody has it
installed yet.

Question
4 - How can I publish an .mp4 file?  Is there a reasonably
cheap video editing suite that will do this or should I stick with the
file converters?

Check out Avid Free DV.

Your video plays fine on Macs. BUT you cannot scan through a video with WMP like you can with QT movies. This was recently mentioned by the Rocketboom producer in an interview a couple of weeks ago. Rocketboom is an excellent example of how good QT video can look. Question 2 - I've heard some buzz about H.264 compression.  Is this type of compression available just for Quicktime .mov or can you use this compression with .mp4 files?H.264 is a subset of mpeg4. so all H.264 encodes are mpeg4 - just a lot better looking and smaller. But it's not necessary. Plain mpeg4 is still better than WindBlows Media Slayer. Pinnacle Studio Media Suite is only $30 after $60 in rebates at Fry's $90 every few weeks. Re: [videoblogging] VLog Category

2005-08-08 Thread Michael Sullivan

it's true, it does help if you learn about videoblogging and the
culture that is driving it, before you get geared up.  Its ok to
ask questions, but it would be better if you go back in the archives
here and read and research through other resources about the Open
Content Revolution... the Remix Culture... Participatory
Media  Figure out what your goals are are you looking to
make a site with ads all over, using vlog content to lure visitors, or
are you looking to give the community something that is useful and some
sort of improvement on other tools...
do you feel that their is a dire need to have another directory?
if so, why?  ask yourself these questions.  Although if you
are strictly looking to make money with ads, i dont know how many
supporters you will have.  Is this your motivation or not?

Also, several projects involved in this community are starting to work
together to share some data and make things like directories loosely
integrated so users dont have to add their vlogs to several
different places.  the group is videovertigo (yahoo).  If you
are serious about contributing something useful to the community, you
might want to join.

I'm just trying to help you help yourself here because trust me,
someone new asking questions every day on how to build your directory
and putting polls out and expecting people to consistantly help you
conjure up the best site ever... aint gonna happen.
i barely got any feedback when i put up vlogdir... and thats ok... its
not the groups responsibility and a developer should have some insight
going in... and a good sense of whats around the corner.

another piece of advice, and i may be wrong, but i decided not to add
any entries to vlogdir myself i leave it up to the community if
they want to be listed and the directory grows based on the
collective interest.  thats my idea of directory etiquette.
Their will be sites, and i have seen this already, that will take the
data from existing directories and import it into theirs and then throw

Re: [videoblogging] VLog Category

2005-08-07 Thread Stephanie Bryant

Troy, I think Markus has some good points: what's going to set your
site apart from the others?

Do you want to call it "political" to denote a grassroots political
vlog, or do you want to call it "grassroots" when it's
citizen-activist and "partisan" when it's, say, John Edwards' vlog?

I thought it interesting that Markus raised the point about not
categorizing an author but rather a work, since most authors do get
categorzed based on what they have written in the past (ex: the "sci
fi ghetto.")

Would a social network model work better for a vlog directory? The
vlogs I watch now, with a few notable exceptions, are vlogs of people
I met in San Francisco, or vlogs of people who regularly contribute
here. Would it work better to have a "people who you know like this
vlog" type of directory? I don't know-- probably 50 people are going
to jump up and say "no way-- social networks suck" and yet, here we
are and we watch each other's vlogs. Social networks don't suck, but
social network sites suck because they're poorly designed.

I know, you probably just wanted to set up a simple database with ads
and start making the moneys. But, hey, as long as you don't have it
set in stone yet, why not think creatively about how to go about it,
because nobody's making money yet-- you're not behind the curve. Also,
even if you were, once you're no longer first, it's important to be
best. You can either be first or you can be best-- those are the
options for competition.

Oh, and this list has over 1,200 members-- soliciting advice on what
you should/shouldn't do for an individual decision like that is
probably going to drive you crazy quick. ;)

Look, you should have a vlog yourself, participate, see what the real
challenges and agendas are of someone who's trying to do this. Get an
audience, and invite THEM to come into your forum-- the people who
watch you are going to be your first, most solid market anyway,
because they have already been exposed to your brand and have built-in
loyalty.

As for cross-posting forum/poll: I wouldn't unless the polls aren't
very frequent. And ask your poll question in a video-- have you
figured out yet what medium videobloggers love?

FWIW, my feedback (you asked)

vlog categories are never useful to me.
It's would be like categorizing authors instead of by the pieces they
publish.
I can understand categorizing a post (but first I want tags).
When I look for vlogs, I don't think "gee, i wish i could find a new
humorous vlog".
Now that I think about it, I don't generally "look" for vlogs.

To be honest, I can't think of a single blog/vlog directory that has
ever been useful for me (and I've really tried to use several just to
see what everyone is talking about - I must be missing something - sorry ).

Sometimes I use google to search.  Never Yahoo.  Rarely Technorati.
Mostly (>95% is "word of mouth" or this list).
I use Del.icio.us all the time.
I rarely use google to find a vlog and even then it's generally one I
already know of and have forgotten the address - damn! I hate that - I
love knowing the addresses of peoples vlogs - strange, huh?
I guess I am my own directory :-)

From another point of view, I did list myself in some directories when
I first started vlogging, but now they (you) list me whether I want it
or not.
Are you planning to categorize my vlog as "General"?

One more thing: most of my "good" traffic does not come from search
engines or directories.
It comes from references, link love, comments and trackbacks.

ok, yet one more thing: what are your plans for access to your directory?
Do you plan to offer any web services or api's?
again, the word del.icio.us comes to mind - now that's a useful
directory and set of web services

You might study del.icio.us carefully.
I don't think Joshua is in it just "for the ride" as you put it on your
about page

Please try to be more than just another directory with ads.
And please do a better job than Technorati.

Good luck to you.

2005-08-07 Thread Jen Simmons

Well, your site is still tiny and thin on "features", but it seems you
are wanting to make it better based on the feedback you've received
from this list, and you have been making changes. Might I also suggest
you change this line: "VLogList.com is your best source for all of your
Vlogging Information." At this moment, in the present, your site is in
no way the best resource for information on vlogging. If you want to
make that claim, you have to "beat" freevlog, videoblogging.info,
mefeedia, and many other incredible resources... By making this claim,
you just make yourself look ridiculous. (And why is it you want to
"compete" with these other amazing sites, instead of joining in??? That
makes people wonder about you, too. Are you just trying to create a
scam? Are you 15 years old and just wanting to do something cool and
aren't quite sure how to go about it?)

Yes, folks leave a note with their request to join and if they say
something sane, I'm supposing Jay lets 'em in.

Do we nuke him or give him a chance to defend himself.

Thanks for the tour and commentary Raymond. Saved me the trouble from
having to go to the site and develop my own opinions... :)

This is the third vlog spam I've seen on the list lately. Is someone
still validating people before they join?
