I think I also got some email from Veoh but I must have deleted it without further ado. I receive a lot of mail I did not ask for, and deleting them if I want to is not that hard. On the other hand, this Veoh story is very interesting, just like it was with the original press release. Maybe they just like the attention? ;) I hope this whole episode ends up teaching someone something about how to pitch the videoblogging crew. We might be genetically different from the people who love being sent emails without asking for it, but I doubt that. Videoblogging services will bloom, and That is awesome. I just hope we can learn to "skille klinten fra hveten" - which is a Norwegian _expression_ I have not the energy to translate right now. :) Wishing you all a great weekend, I know I need some rest. Who really care if someone sent you a spam email?Do you not get other spam from other sources. Do you not have a spam filter you can add him to?I think all the chatter about it is worse than the spam it self. Stop being stupid and whining. You are not smarter than anyone else, you are not the most important person in the group and you are annoying the hell out of most of the group by complaining about this everyday occurrence.anyways...nixter out. =Xhttp://www.skullcrew.comhttp://www.angryshirts.comOn Aug 19, 2005, at 1:18 PM, Halcyon Lujah wrote: Hey, I'm the pink haired guy and I may have been resposible for some of the confusion and mistaken emails. I can't imagine giving your cell phone number to 1200 members of this group, some or many of whom have a bone to pick with you. Mr. Shapiro is brave indeed. I wouldn't be surprised if doing this didn't end up causing him to change his cell phone number. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Spam from Veoh?
Good point about the press release. The key point is that we all demand mutual respect. This is a conversation as Markus points out. Cluetrain manifesto stuff through and through. Can't recommend that enough for the Veoh crew. Simply posting a press release in a group is not "conversation". -Mike Michael Meiser http://mmeiser.com/blog - fun stuff http://mmeiser.com/backchannel - serious lunacy stuff On Aug 19, 2005, at 2:08 PM, Steve Watkins wrote: To be fair they already did that here in the past. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Spam from Veoh?
Most unfortunate Watson! It's quite obvious to me (as I track all emails by using unique addresses for every different service) that these email addresses were harvested directly to the video blogging group. And harvested they were, there's no denying it, there's way to much correspondence between the two. For example I received email from them to groups-yahoo-com[at)mmeiser.com which I only use for yahoo groups. It's a huge over-site but I hope we can all forgive the people at Veoh. I can't imagine what they were thinking but I'm sure they won't make the same mistake twice. Please keep in mind our whole idea of standards and etiquette are still evolving and aren't so familiar to people who don't participate in bboards or yahoo groups that often. What's most unfortunate is I was and still am more than willing to subscribe to or participate in a mailing list or yahoo group regarding their project. Their email has thrown a lot of would be fans back on their heals. If I may make the suggestion... they should start all over, a clear slate and instead of emailing us all off group through our personal email.. use this group as a forum as MANY others have (from ANT to Vlogmaps), for approaching us all us all as a group in the open. A nice short introduction should work well, where we can ask questions in an open manner and then perhaps... a link to Veoh's own Yahoo group or mailing list for those of us who are interested. Personally I've loved to follow the conversation on projects I'm interested in. Almost every project I'm interested in from Flickr, to Del.icio.us to Ant and so on has a mailing list of some sort. -Mike Michael Meiser http://mmeiser.com/blog - fun stuff http://mmeiser.com/backchannel - serious lunacy stuff On Aug 19, 2005, at 12:59 PM, Andreas Haugstrup wrote: On Fri, 19 Aug 2005 18:47:16 +0200, akonix_dmitry <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > We have sent out one email to our [EMAIL PROTECTED] list, announcing the > launch of our video uploader. A link to a web site where you can unsubscribe. 2. An e-mail address you can write to in order to unsubscribe. 3. A postal mailing address you can write to in order to unsubscribe. only one of these items (#2) was included in the second mailing I received from Veoh, and none were included in the first (both of which I received multiple copies of). thus, both bulk mailings are illegal spam. for further perusal: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/canspam.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Can_Spam_Act_of_2003 that aside, I do appreciate the effort that you're going through to make this right. cheers, - Jared -- Happiness is a warm laptop. Re: [videoblogging] Re: Spam from Veoh?
Dmitry, I searched my gmail outgoing folder, which I have never ever deleted anything from. No message there to anyone at veoh.com, so clearly I've never directly emailed to join that notification list. Here is what I think happened (best scenario): someone subscribed to this Yahoo! group with the notify@ as their email address and harvested addresses from people who emailed to the listserve. Whether that was done deliberately or as an accident, I don't know. You've been very up-front about Veoh and I don't believe this is a deliberate part of your business model. But if notify@ has an auto-adder to it, it would certainly be one quick way to get a bunch of email addresses without really thinking about it. Also, it's more than one message. I received one that's still in my inbox (the initial press release from Maddie) and then another one this morning, not from this Y! group, which went directly into my spam box and which I deleted permanently about an hour ago. Glad you're attending to these issues. --Stephanie On 8/19/05, akonix_dmitry <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hello, > > This is Dmitry Shapiro, CEO of Veoh.
