Re: [vintagvw] Cracking Rubber Fuel Line
I failed to mention too that Viton fuel line is used on methanol-powered racing bikes. Marine supply places sell a gray fuel line that is alcohol-resistant and even more per foot from the places I saw online. I didn't realize the government was mandating alcohol supplements in the fuel. That just decreases mileage and raises tax dollars - oh did I say that? :-/ Propane and diesel conversions are sounding better all the time... Re: [vintagvw] Cracking Rubber Fuel Line
I'm guessing when it comes to ethanol resistant fuel line, one is going to have to spend some coin to buy some really good stuff. As a Stihl Chainsaw mechanic, one of the issues with the fuel lines that were German-made when they used to import saws before the new facility was built in Virginia, was that of the fuel lines seriously degrading to the point of leakage and inoperation. They had to redo the composition of the fuel lines. I think the originals were black and the replacements are green. They are a moulded line so of course it wouldn't work on the VWs, but it does point to the fact that there are ethanol resistant fuel lines out there somewhere. I checked in the experimental aviation circles and found this: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/bingfuel.php There are 2 sizes listed in which the first one shows an ID of 1/4 which I think would work. The line is blue and goes for $1.48 a foot which is tolerable. After this most recent discussion of fuel lines, I think I'll order me some and switch my VWs over to it and see how it works. Re: [vintagvw] Cracking Rubber Fuel Line
NQ, Have you seriously checked the price of diesel lately??? My calculations show that it is 12% above the cost of unleaded. (here in arkansas) If I drive a prius and get 50 mpg on unleaded then I need to drive a diesel that gets 56 mpg to match the premium price. Not gonna happen in this world. A guy that works for me has a brand new Jetta diesel and gets only 44mpg on the hiway and still pays $3.76 at the pump while I pay $3.35(as of today). CNG and propane...yes... If you check, you will find a conversion for a bus that was done back in the 60's I thinkstill looked good to me as it required minimal changes. BTW, did you know that Honda sells a CNG car right now? 27-38mpg http://automobiles.honda.com/civic-natural-gas/?ef_id=1rBPKV0LEW0AAIpv:20120223141429:s Looked it up for you: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Green-Transportation/1972-05-01/Propane-Conversion.aspx Cheers, dave -- Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.-James Dean On Thu, 23 Feb 2012, No Quarter wrote: I failed to mention too that Viton fuel line is used on methanol-powered racing bikes. It says that it's rated at 50psi. This is not high pressure injection hose. It won't work in this application. Mike B. On Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 10:04 AM, Jack Dinan wrote: Great find, NQ. Re: [vintagvw] Cracking Rubber Fuel Line
The one I listed from eBay in rated at 225 psi. Fine for both injected and carb'd models. Unfortunately, I could only find the 5.6mm line. Next size up from the seller is 7.6mm. That means injected VW's calling for 7mm hose are SOL at he moment. It costs about $3.28/foot if you buy 3 meters from them. that's enough to do 2 or 3 VW's. The price drops to about $3.12/foot if you order 10 meters. G2 On Thu, 23 Feb 2012 18:50:17 -0500 (EST) Mike B. mbucch...@charter.net wrote: It says that it's rated at 50psi. [vintagvw] Booklet from Yves
Volks, Yves V., are you still on the list? Help! Last year you found and sent me a copy of the VW factory workshop bulletin (a Ratgeber they call it) for the VW police model's special 12-volt system, M 613. I've lost it in a hard-drive crash. And my print of it got water-damaged. Do you (or does anyone?) still have a saved copy of that pamphlet? May I please have another copy? I promise to back-up better! [vintagvw] Used VW fire engine for sale in Germany
Volks, Okay, its a niche market but theres a neat VW Type 2 minipumper for sale by a small German fire department. Its a 1970 with less than 23,000 km (!) on the odometer and its a first owner. The shipping shouldnt run over $500, but thats variable. Check out http://www.feuerwehr.de/markt/anzeige.php?r=9z=1n=23482 for details. We need more of these around!
