I'm glad the thing about degrees came up as I prefer that level of accuracy,
the 8 key points are too vague in a large open space. The next best, and
think it was MyWay light that did it, or Ariadne, quoted direction in
hours of the clock. That was a lot better as a rough guide.

You know, I thought that Blind Square was 15 dollars. I find it's 23 or
perhaps 24. Perhaps one day it will go back on sale and then I'll try
to get it.
I can afford it, but I just don't do enough traveling to make it a
necessity; it would be fun to play with; so I'll wait to perhaps a sale.
note, that if you have an iPhone five, the earphone is at the same end as the
charging port. So, in Sieghard's excellent description, replace power button
with earphone jack and it makes perfect sense.

A compass comes on the iPhone and seems pretty good although I haven't
used it a ton. Is this voice compass app better in some way?

Hi Teresa,
Voice Compass in fact uses the built-in compass, but I prefer it for quick use
because the recorded human voice gives you very simple announcements whereas
the stock compass app uses Voiceover speech and the announcements starts with
the degrees followed by the direction, but it's
