That kind of thing is why I haven't updated my Amazon app in months I've got it
at a version that seems to work well for me and I plan to keep it that way
until I absolutely have to update it

Are you sure it's not called VoiceOver Recognition? I have an iPhone XR, and
between Braille and Verbosity is an item called VoiceOver Recognition.

To get screen recognition in the rotor, go to settings, accessibility,
voiceover & swipe down to rotor, tap to open, swipe down to screen recognition&

Run the Amazon app and launch Task Switcher. Place Focus on the Amazon app.
If enabled turn the Rotor to Screen Recognition and if enabled flick
Hi.
Have your friend check if anything is coming out of the earpiece of the phone
when the app is opened. This is a problem that others, including me, are having.
If this is what's going on, open the app switcher and select the Amazon app
from there. This gets it working for me.
