I rported the same behavior when I got my 5th Generation last Fall. Apple
replaced it and when it died at 12'%, I decided to just live with it.
This is one of those flaws that Apple won't acknowledge. I just make sure to
charge mine before it gets down to 12'%.

I know it is meant to auto-shutdown when power is low; but yes, I've had an
old iPhone go as low as 7%, I put it on charge then, never left one long
enough to see how low it would go. But it needs to retain some charge to
hold settings, though it doesn't need a lot, it has to make a
I agree with all that is said here. Take it to your local store and
insist on getting a replacement.

I have the 5th gen and it's doing the same thing, Ill use it for 3-4 hours
and it dies or ill set it down in airplane mode for half a day and it's at
10% battery. I got them to send me a new one.

Lithium ion batteries also can't reach a zero charge without causing
permanent damage to the battery, so the electronics built into them will
shut them down before they reach an absolute zero charge. I'd assume the

Hi Richard,
I had the same problem when I bought my first iPod Touch which was a third
Generation back in 2009. I did basically the same as you which is what Apple
support wanted me to do. Then I phoned them back and told them it was still
going through the battery like crazy and they asked me to
Hi Sieghard and David,
The battery life is pretty good, but the odd part is that it acts as if 12
percent is the lowest it can go.
I plan to talk with them about getting a replacement, but you have to go
through their hoops first.
I just wanted to know if anyone else with the fifth generation
I have had older versions of the IPod touch do the same thing. I don't
know if that helps you any. I guess it really means you can't use the
last 12% of the battery and now that I think about it, I can
understand why that is not so good.
