It sounds like some kind of notification have you got a Gmail app tthat
notifies you. Or have you got selected contacts in the notification centre?

You cannot turn this off. The Mail app is setup as follows.
On the left side you will have a list of mailboxes. Once you have opened a
mailbox that list becomes the list of messages. The right 2/3rds of the screen
is the message content itself.
