I have tried making the phone forget the connection and then re-entering the

Hey Mark, the way that I fixed this issue is unplugging the router for 30 secs,
or so. Then all was well. It happened one other time where I had to unplug both
the modem and the router for a few minutes.

In an effort to stop this from being a one liner, in theory, if you
did run into this backup problem, you *should* be able to update to
5.11, restore the backup, copy the data someware else then downgrade
again. Untested by me though.

Yes, in normal situations you have to be on wifi to use facetime.
However if you jailbreak you can get past that. Just know it eats
through data quite a bit though.
