Does anyone know of any solutions other than Skype? This is what we have been
using, at my recommendation, and call quality regularly gets bad. I have been
asked to try and find another accessible solution as Go To Meeting is not
accessible, but supposedly has better call quality.

Hi Sherrie and all,

The iPhone 6 Plus screens are like the earlier iPhones if you lock the
orientation in portrait mode or if you zoom the view. If you don't do either
of these things and you have the phone in landscape view, with the long
sides facing you, many screens switch to a view that is similar to iPad
screens. This happens, for example, in Settings, Messages, and Mail. So you
can choose whether to make the iPad-like views available or not.

Jawbone up24 application

2015-03-22 Thread Marie BAISEZ

Hi Wren!
I have to disagree on what has been stated on the latest message on this
subject!
I use a jawbone Up24 all the time, the band is easy to use, not
difficult to set up and the application if a bit cluttered, is perfectly
usable. The Smart coach feature is great! I am totally blind, not that
clued about technical matters and have managed to set up the device
without sighted assistance. The help files on the site are clear and
concise, it was a great source of information.

Hope you find the device that's right for you soon!
Good Luck!

Discussion about how we like to use our phones

If willing to accept a learning curve and starting from scratch with a new
operating system, it’s possible to do practically most every day tasks
accomplished with a computer using iOS devices.

 Examples are:

Listening to favorite cds, books from CNIB or bookshare or many other
 commercial reading sources, internet radio.

Surfing the web, reading Emails writing mails and text messages,Taking notes
using an external keyboard or writing on the iOS device using Braille input
 or taking audio recording memos.

Blindness specific aids such as OCR, reading pdf files, planning routes and
getting orientation info similar with tracker, light detector etc.

Social advantage of using devices that everyone else uses. Further, the
interface we use is similar enough to relate and receive and give help with
operating iOS devices to sighted users.

Difficulties when starting out with iOS

Orientation without buttons, learning the physical layout of the screen.

 Performing gestures efficiently.

 Text input and keypad use.

Areas where current cisg members using iOS want to expand in future meetings

MBraille and other Braille input options on the iphone.

Surfing the web efficiently with safari.

Using BlindSquare, a gps app with lots of features.

Making phone calls efficiently dealing with extension and keying in options
once the call is in progress such as voicemail passwords.

 Exploring skype on the iPhone.

Potentially looking at emailing with iphone?

Please add any topics here you’d like addressed in our next meetings.

Where do we go from here?

Leo works with Apple store for workshop in May. Goal is to give anyone
considering apple devices a hands-on overview of what they can expect and
provide follow-up options to learn more about them.

Meeting for current iOS users where we can teach and explore hands on topics
presented in previous item in this agenda.

Date for meetings to be is yet decided upon.

Here is where I had to sign off. Please add anything I might have missed.

It was a pleasure to chat and exchange with those who were on the call and I
am looking forward to future meetings.

NPR One App Question

2015-03-22 Thread Sherry Wells
Hi all,

I’ve been using the NPR One app and, as others have said, am finding it quite
accessible. I am confused on one aspect though, the slider at the bottom of
the screen when a program is playing. The slider gives percentages which I
assume means how much of the program has completed. What is confusing though
is that voice over says adjustable, swipe up down to adjust. There is
already a rewind button so I’m not sure why one would want to decrease the
percentage. And I’ve been totally unsuccessful at increasing the percentage
complete or fast forwarding.Does someone know how to fast forward through a
program? Or am I wrong as to the purpose of this slider?

Also, sometimes a button labelled interesting appears. I’m guessing one can
click this if you like the program the app will tend towards more programs of
that type. Unfortunately this button does not show up all the time. Any ideas
as to how this works? Is the button random?

Thanks.
Sherry Wells

Re: New sirius Xm app

2015-03-22 Thread Steve
I don't like the new one quite as well yet. I played with it on my wife's
phone, but kept mine at the previous version for now.

When you bring up the channels, and this applies with categories as well, they
are displayed in a vertical row in the center of the screen. You can
double-tap to open up that category or to start playing a channel. In this
respect, the new app is nice because it starts playing immediately and it
doesn't appear to have the lag time the older version had. The other point is
you get the channel names, whereas on the older version I think you got the
name of the song and you had to guess at the channel.

But, I had a couple instances when trying to flick up to bring the next page of
channels into view when the app crashed.

You can't have categories on the phone and navigate by heading to look at the
channels in each category. And, you can't flick to get to the channels, you
have to touch the one you want in the vertical row.

Hi Everyone:
I am a huge SiriusXM fan and love this new app.
On the bottom there should be several buttons which are labeled.
The first is channels where you can select channels to listen to and
pick from categories.
When you are on the channels screen there is also a button for on-demand too.
Then there is the recent button which I believe tells you what you've
most recently been listening to.
Then there is the search button where you can search for a channel or show.
Then there is the me which gives you settings and such.
Then there is favorites and on the favorites you can choose between
channels or shows.
I love this new app.
It's different than the old one but I think a lot better.
The only little problem I have run into is when you select the
channels tab it's hard to swipe through channels
Also when you select favorites and press the channels button it's hard
to swipe through your favorite channels.
But, when you select favorites and shows you can swipe through those fine.
Other than that little issue with swiping through the channels it's
totally accessible to me.
Hope that helps!

Just one clarification. Once you plan your route in Google Maps, the
maps you need are cached on your phone, so even if you lose network
connectivity, Google Maps will still give you turn by turn directions
until you reach your destination.

On 03/20/2015 08:21 PM, Richard Turner wrote:

I've read through most of the responses you have received.
I'll go ahead and chime in though.

First, it depends on what kind of information you most want.
If you just want turn-by-turn directions, my personal favorite is
Google Maps, especially with the latest update. You can do voice
searches for destinations by name or address.
It does a very good job and is completely voiceOver accessible and it
is free.

If you want to hear the cross streets as you are traveling and other
information, then BlindSquare for $29.99 is very good.

If you want excellent intersection information, including the angle of
the cross streets, information about streets you are crossing, and a
completely accessible turn-by-turn app, then spend the money for
Seeing Eye GPS XT for $299.99 for a one time purchase, or Seeing Eye
GPS subscription for $69.99 for one year or $129.99 for 3 years.
If you come to an intersection that is not at a straight 90 degree
turn, it will say something like SE 12th Street, 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock.
Plus, one thing I like very much is that when it announces the cross
street (if you have it set to simple intersections) it just says the
name of the cross street and doesn't waste time speaking the street
you are on.

Mapquest is another free app that works quite well and is completely
VoiceOver accessible.

Motion X GPS is also quite popular at a low cost, which I don't recall
right now.

Navigon is also very good plus it stores the maps on your iPhone so
you don't have to have an internet connection to use it.
All the other ones store the maps in the cloud. Navigon is available
in several packages; North America which includes Canada and the
off-shore territories, Just the United States, or in regions like
Western United States, Eastern United States and Central United
States. Plus it is available for many other countries.

But, there is no one Best GPS app as it really depends on personal
preference and need.

RE: Another Aftershokz Bites the Dust.

2015-03-22 Thread Cristóbal
Mine cracked a couple of months ago and I just performed surgery on them. I
used an old credit card. Cut it longwise to fit the width of the band. Placed a
piece on each side and wrapped it with electrical tape and all taken care of. I
still have the warranty replacement unit I received in its box untouched. The
sound function still worked fine and they were broken anyway, so I figured why
not give it a try. The credit card plastic works well, because it’s got enough
give to be flexible and is stirty to act as a good splint.

The complaints of the unit being too flimsy and easy to break are valid, but as
far as fixing the band and still getting them to work is relatively easy.
Hopefully future versions of this product will improve upon its design and
durability.

Re: NPR One App Question

2015-03-22 Thread Scott Berry
Hi there Sherry,

I am going to be getting the app but don’t have it yet. I’ll take a stab at
these for you.

You probably have two choices for fast forwarding and rewinding the program.
So you can move the slider one way for fast forward and the other for rewind.
Or you can the rewind and fast forward buttons provided.

The Interesting button is exactly what you think it is. It’s to indicate to
the app if you like a particular show.

On Mar 22, 2015, at 8:21 AM, Sherry Wells sherrywells1...@gmail.com wrote:

There is
already a rewind button so I’m not sure why one would want to decrease the
percentage. And I’ve been totally unsuccessful at increasing the percentage
complete or fast forwarding.Does someone know how to fast forward through
a program? Or am I wrong as to the purpose of this slider?

Also, sometimes a button labelled interesting appears. I’m guessing one can
click this if you like the program the app will tend towards more programs
of that type. Unfortunately this button does not show up all the time. Any
ideas as to how this works? Is the button random?

 Thanks.

 Hi all,
I am wondering if anyone uses the Team Stream application on there iPhones

seem to include the full text in the app. Is there a way to fix this? Do we

Re: Workflow with variables help

2015-03-22 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hi Alex,

First of all, thanks for a great podcast.
I am trying to create a workflow that adds recurring events numbered
recursively.
Event 1/8 event 2/8, event 3/8 etc.

Here are the questions I have about this:
1 Using the set variable action I added it but could not find a way to tell
it what it should store, just found a field for the variable name. Am I missing
something there?

2. I added a calendar event to the workflow and then added the get name and
get date from input actions, thinking I can then use the data from there in
an other calendar event to be added in the workflow probably using the adjust
dates action.
However I'm not sure how to specify the input for these actions.
Would you be willing to have a look at what I did off list? I could send you
the workflow in progress.

Thanks again for any help or pointer to any documentation I can have a look
at.

Best,

Ioana

are you able to get any of the described video? I have spent hours on the phone
with Tivo and both Time Warner and now Verizon Fios and they claim either I
cannot receive described video with a cable card or the cable company blames

I've read through most of the responses you have received.
I'll go ahead and chime in though.

First, it depends on what kind of information you most want.
If you just want turn-by-turn directions, my personal favorite is Google
Maps, especially with the latest update. You can do voice searches for
destinations by name or address.
It does a very good job and is completely voiceOver accessible and it is
free.

If you want to hear the cross streets as you are traveling and other
information, then BlindSquare for $29.99 is very good.

If you want excellent intersection information, including the angle of the
cross streets, information about streets you are crossing, and a completely
accessible turn-by-turn app, then spend the money for Seeing Eye GPS XT for
$299.99 for a one time purchase, or Seeing Eye GPS subscription for $69.99
for one year or $129.99 for 3 years.
If you come to an intersection that is not at a straight 90 degree turn, it
will say something like SE 12th Street, 8 o'clock and 2 o'clock.
Plus, one thing I like very much is that when it announces the cross street
(if you have it set to simple intersections) it just says the name of the
cross street and doesn't waste time speaking the street you are on.

Mapquest is another free app that works quite well and is completely
VoiceOver accessible.

Motion X GPS is also quite popular at a low cost, which I don't recall right
now.

Navigon is also very good plus it stores the maps on your iPhone so you
don't have to have an internet connection to use it.
All the other ones store the maps in the cloud. Navigon is available in
several packages; North America which includes Canada and the off-shore
territories, Just the United States, or in regions like Western United
States, Eastern United States and Central United States. Plus it is
available for many other countries.

But, there is no one Best GPS app as it really depends on personal
preference and need.

Richard

Subject: Is there a way to reset a Plantronics Voyager Legend headset?

Hi,

My Plantronics Voyager Legend headset seems to have died overnight. It was
working great, then, after an overnight charge, nothing nada kaput.

Wondering if there's a way to try to reset the thing. I can't feel any
small
hole anywhere into which I could stick a paper clip. If anyone knows, or
has
any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them.

Thanks in advance. Keith

Discussion about how we like to use our phones
If willing to accept a learning curve and starting from scratch with a new

accomplished with a computer using iOS devices.
  Examples are:

Listening to favorite cds, books from CNIB or bookshare or many other
commercial reading sources, internet radio.
Surfing the web, reading Emails writing mails and text messages,Taking notes
using an external keyboard or writing on the iOS device using Braille input or
taking audio recording memos.

  All the best,

Re: my iPhone book is out

2015-03-22 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Sherrie and all,

The iPhone 6 Plus screens are like the earlier iPhones if you lock the
orientation in portrait mode or if you zoom the view. If you don't do either of
these things and you have the phone in landscape view, with the long sides
facing you, many screens switch to a view that is similar to iPad screens. This
happens, for example, in Settings, Messages, and Mail. So you can choose
whether to make the iPad-like views available or not.

Anna

HTH,
Richard

what they become by it.

What apps do you all use for GPS?

2015-03-22 Thread Alan J Paganelli
All I use the Plantronics Voyager Legend is to answer and make phone calls.
Granted you can rout all audio through the Legend and that's what I want.
When I need to use my phone for an app a text message etc, that's when I
take my phone out of my pocket. The Legend is limited to 7 hours of talk
time. My use on my iPhone going through the Legend is only a means of
private listening. For example, I can be listening to a NLS Talking Book.
On a lower volume setting on the Legend, I can walk down the street and
still hear sounds around me as well as my book.

Subject: A few questions or techniques about operating the Plantronics
voyager legend headset please

Hi all, and thank you for the help. When I press the voice command on my
headset the first time it will say say a command if I press the button again
right away it won't speak. Is this the way it's supposed to work? Also, when
I try to process the answer call to make a call that doesn't work either. It
just beeps at me. Do I need to cancel the voice command before I do anything
else? Also, is the headset supposed to be able to start Siri so you can make
a call with Siri on the headset? If so how does that work please. I have the
manual but there are some things in it I just don't understand yet so any
help or or any place where I can look up the information would be greatly
appreciated any others suggestions also would be appreciated God bless, Wren

Re: iPhone teleconference notes

2015-03-22 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello,

After accidentally posting some meeting notes to the viphone list, I tried to
remove the post and also signaled it to the moderators but, as I see, it's
still accessible to listers.
I understand you don't mind but, given that these were notes about a
conversation of a different group, and there was no agreement about sharing
this publicly I would rather people kindly ignore this thread.

Again, many apologies for all involved.

Best,

 All the best,

Change How Many Lines of an Email Are Previewed in the Mail App

Do you ever wish you could see more (or less) of an
email's content before deciding whether to open or delete it? Here's how to
change the number of lines of text shown in your email previews on your iPhone.

Open your Settings application and scroll down to Mail,
Contacts, Calendars tab. Under the Mail section; you’ll want to tap the first
tab to adjust the Preview of your emails.

As you can see, you can choose to have between zero and
five lines previewed when viewing your emails in the Mail app.

Let’s take a look at the difference between the default
2 Lines preview option with the maximum preview option of 5 Lines.

Depending on your workflow, you may not have an issue
with only seeing the first two lines of an email. With the 5 Lines option
chosen, you’ll see much more text content without having to open the email.

Re: NPR One App Question

2015-03-22 Thread Alan Lemly
Sherry,

The slider bar at the bottom of the NPR one app does not work as the VoiceOver
hint says. When you single finger up or down, a different percentage of play is
announced but the announcer continues to talk at exactly the same spot. I
noticed if you turn VoiceOver off, sliding the bar with a single finger moves
your location as expected. With VoiceOver on, I find that doing a double tap
and hold on the slider bar and then moving my held finger without lifting it up
does move my location in the story.

I'll add that I sometimes have difficulty finding that slider bar because
sometimes it seems to drop below what's on the screen.

Another poster read in the NPR one FAQs that the interesting button is a work
in progress. I assume it will act as a listener comment on the story button
when it is functioning.

To the right of the interesting button is a share button that unfortunately is
inaccessible with VoiceOver turned on. I've written NPR digital services about
this problem.

There is
already a rewind button so I’m not sure why one would want to decrease the
percentage. And I’ve been totally unsuccessful at increasing the percentage
complete or fast forwarding.Does someone know how to fast forward through

 Thanks.

I think that’s what many people don’t get. The fact that you can incert
periods commas, etc just by saying their name. This is an example and then you
would say the word period. I also use the proper voice enflection indicating

The value will be whatever the previous action outputs. If you put an input box

However I have an other one related to workflow:
How does the menu action work?

adding some before the one action and the Two action but, at least with
voiceover they don't go where I'd like them.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Workflow with variables help

2015-03-22 Thread Alex Hall
Also not one I've used yet, but positioning is simply a matter of some patience
and very slow finger movements. Don't forget you can also move the other
actions around your menu if necessary.

Hello again for your quick reply.
 ,

In the meantime I figured out the answers to my previous workflow questions.

However I have an other one related to workflow:
How does the menu action work?
I've added it but find no way to customize the different menu actions. Tried
adding some before the one action and the Two action but, at least with
voiceover they don't go where I'd like them.

 Thanks for any help!

 Best regards,

 Hi Alex,

First of all, thanks for a great podcast.
 Glad you found it helpful.

I am trying to create a workflow that adds recurring events numbered
 recursively.
 Event 1/8 event 2/8, event 3/8 etc.
Not sure I follow, but let's see what I can answer.

Here are the questions I have about this:
1 Using the set variable action I added it but could not find a way to
tell it what it should store, just found a field for the variable name. Am
 I missing something there?
The value will be whatever the previous action outputs. If you put an input
box in your workflow, then put a set variable action after it, the
variable would be set to whatever the user typed in the box. If you put it
after a calculation, the result would be what the variable is set to.

 2. I added a calendar event to the workflow and then added the get name
and get date from input actions, thinking I can then use the data from
there in an other calendar event to be added in the workflow probably using
 the adjust dates action.
However I'm not sure how to specify the input for these actions.
Would you be willing to have a look at what I did off list? I could send
 you the workflow in progress.
I'm not sure what you mean by specify the input, but then I've never
looked at Get Name or Get Date yet. I assume the latter pops up a date
picker, but I don't know about the former. You can send the workflow and
I'll see what I can make of it.

Thanks again for any help or pointer to any documentation I can have a look
 at.

 Best,

 Ioana

Re: Accessible VOIP app for international group conference calls

2015-03-22 Thread David Cleveland
This is the service and app that is used for a technology conference call that
I participate in. I am not sure how they handle international calls. The
actual phone numbers distributed or US based phone numbers. But if you use the
app on your phone instead of dialing in the phone number you can use your
Internet access and avoid phone charges.

I am a director of a non-profit organisation. We have a small budget and a
monthly conference call. we are looking for an accessible VOIP calling
set-up which is inexpensive and allows private conference calls. All of us
 have computer or smartphone access.

transfering from one app to another app

2015-03-22 Thread Lori Dent
Hi all,

I need some help please. I typed some notes that I need for a Society of the
Blind meeting I'm running tomorrow. I typed these notes in my notes app. What
are the steps to transfer my notes from my notes app to my prizmo app so that I
can read my notes and how do I name my notes so that I can find them in my
prizmo app?

I have my Society of the blind agenda in my prizmo app. So I figured I'll have
my notes for the meeting in the prizmo app with my Society of the Blind agenda.

I have drop box, voice dream reader and voice writer which of these apps are
the best to keep notes I make for a meeting and meeting agenda in ? Any
suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
