RE: Charging Your New Phone, Anyone?

2023-01-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
My iPhone 11 and now my new iPhone 13 Pro don't stop at 80% either. If I put
any of them on the charger at 10 or 11 PM they go right up to 100% in whatever
time that takes which of course depends on how low they were, but typically
within 2 hours at most. I wouldn't worry too much about leaving it on the
charger, as an example, my Asus laptop probably has been sittting at home
plugged in more than 99% of the time since I got it 6 years ago and the battery
still does pretty well. We were doing a complete inventory count at my retail
store today and this is done on Lightspeed Retail, an online point of sale
system, there is a USB scanner connected to the laptop and I brought both my
Asus Zenbook with an I67 sixth generation CPU as well as a new Lenovo ThinkPad
T16 which also has an I7 processor, but a 12th generation and we had to plug
the brand new Lenovo in before my old Asus. Of course that may be also because
I haven't spend hardly any time with it yet tweaking any settings, screen
brightness and so on, but it goes to show how good and in a way smart modern
Lithium batteries are. Many people get a new phone every 2 years and some even
every year but even if you keep your phone for 3, 4 or 5 years then all it
takes is a $49 or whatever battery replacement after 2 or 3 years and you are
good again.

I thought the way battery optimization was supposed to work was that it would
get to 80 percent and stop, and would only go on to 100 percent after learning
your schedule, or every 24 hours, or whatever. Mine has never stopped at 80
percent, neither has it refused to charge if I plug it in when it already is
over 80 percent. I have always just figured that battery optimization just
didn't work on the cheap phones, for whatever reason. I am not quite sure what
is going on. Although I wouldn't want to leave my phone connected to power for
days, I have always been a little skeptical about its being all that bad to
leave it connected for hours. After all, it backs itself up while connected and
the screen locked.

Well Apple says it's better if your phone doesn't just sit there at 100 percent
all the time. the battery optimization is designed to keep this from happening.
Lets say you go to sleep every night at 10:30 and plug your phone in and you
wake up at 5:30. Your phone might reach 80 percent around 12:30. Then it will
stop until around 4:45 or so where it will resume charging in order to be at
100 by the time you wake up. If you use your phone more than usual and put it
on the charger early, it would then charge all the way because the new schedule
isn't recognized. so according to Apple, it's better if you don't keep your
phone plugged in all the time. It would put your battery under unnecessary
stress and could make your battery health degrade a little quicker.

It could be useful to post a good email address to contact someone at Microsoft

Of course, folks can call Microsoft Accessibility 800-936-5900 at least in the

A Blind Truth
Microsoft Soundscape - Further Information
Firstly , thank you all so much for sharing my recent post about the imminent
demise of Microsoft Soundscape. It is obvious from the number of comments and
shares the post got, that I am not the only one who was shocked by the news.
Now, this is not a direct response to me from Microsoft - however…
Via a chain of contacts I have been lead to believe that one of the main
reasons for Microsoft discontinuing Soundscape is that they don’t think very
many people use it.Apparently they have no way of knowing, which I have to say
rocks my world somewhat.
So, here’s the thing. Let’s let Microsoft know how much we use, and how much we
rely on it for safety, independence and orientation.
You never know, this might be that one time when pester power actually works.
So,once again, please share this post far and wide, andlet’s see if we can get
Microsoft to change it’s mind.

Yes, I find it's well worth waiting the extra half second or so after the tone
because it seems Siri most often comes back with something stupid if you speak
too early. For example, I may say "Call John Smith", and Siri may say "What
would you like to know about John Smith". I assume what happens is that I
speak just a bit too quickly and all Siri hears is "John Smith" so it asks me
what I want with him.

I Just Used the OCR Scan Text Feature in iOS 16.2, with VoiceOver: An Impressive Tool for Low Vision Users

2023-01-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

So, a few moments ago, on my 14, with iOS 16.2 I decided to give the Scan
Text feature a whirl while composing a text message in 16.2.

While I do not have enough vision to read the text of the display, letter
for letter, I do see well enough to detect objects in a camera's field of
view, recognize that text has been entered in to edit fields, etc.

So, I got a recent hardcopy letter, that I had received in the mail, and
placed it on a flat surface. When I initiated the feature from within the
text message edit field, the back camera was immediately activated on the
lower portion of the display. VoiceOver instructed me to move the camera
lower so that the letter was in the camera's field of view.

When the text was detected, I could see that it popped up in the edit field
near the top of the display. This was not a photo of the text but, rather,
an OCR version that VoiceOver could read as if I had typed it into the edit
field, manually. All I had to do in order to save the text to the text
message edit field was to single-finger, double-tap the insert button
located near the bottom of the display.

Most impressive, at least to a low vision VoiceOver user.

The OCR feature, as described above, also works in the Notes app.

What I find most astonishing is that text recognition is virtually
instantaneous; I could not detect any lag time between when the text on a
piece of paper, in the Camera's field of view, appeared, and when that same
text popped up in the edit field into which it could be saved.

Apple is clearly onto something wonderful hear.

If only Apple's OCR would read out the text in the camera's field of view,
automatically, there would be virtually no need for any third-party OCR
apps.

I realize that a totally blind VoiceOver user requires more specific
instructions, than, "Scroll down," in order to use OCR but, if any company
can make OCR, even after all these years, appear magical, it is Apple.

In the meantime, for those who can use the Scan Text feature, I urge you to
do so and pass your findings on to Apple.

Mark

Well, I know my wrist size is more for a 40 mm watch which is what I had. I had
a series 5 Apple Watch but it died just before Christmas so I’m saving up for
the ultra because of the bigger screen myself. I also like the fact that the
speaker is a lot louder than the average watch speaker for voiceover on the
ultra according to some reviews that I’ve seen and just asking around but the
Apple Watch 8 also is a good alternative if you can’t save up for the ultra
there’s also the SE.

Mark,

Have you ever participated in clubhouse discussions using headphones in the

Re: Mentions and Group Conversations on iPhone

2023-01-02 Thread Margaret Thomas
I think I did what Malcolm suggests this morning when I did what Mike
suggested. Anyway, it is off now. I've turned everything off that
folks have said to turn off and still get some form of the word mentions
when I'm working in the messages app and I just looked again and it is
in my rotor along with characters, words, misspelled words etc. and I
can't deselect it from the rotor the way I normally do since it isn't
listed as a choice.

I just turned the phone off and back on again and started composing a
text to myself and there were other texts from me to me on the screen.
I swiped right to get to text field and it said the usual text field
double tap to edit and that darned form of the word mentions. I don't
know why I have it in the rotor and no one else does. I'll try a search
like Mike B. did after a long break.

Thanks for your patience. Any more suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

Margaret

Hello,

Not sure whether this will address your issue but try the following.

Go into Settings and Messages.

Navigate to the heading Mentions.

In here is a Notify Me button.  Deselect this.  The explanation reads:
When this is on, you will be notified when your name is mentioned
even if conversations are muted.

Good morning Margaret,

couple of searches for removing the Mentions option from the rotor

they're usually done, for and by, sighted folks.

Hi, Mike:

The first part went fine, but I'm not finding mentions in settings,
accessibility, VoiceOver, rotor to delete mentions from the rotor.  Is
it somewhere else or am I not awake enough or...?

Thanks,

RE: A Question about Facetime Audio Output in iOS16.2: It is Different than on other Apps

2023-01-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Simon,

I am happy to let you know that, although the spatial results are the same
between what I am experiencing in Facetime and what you are experiencing in
various audio playback apps, in your circumstance, there is an easy solution.

Just do the following the next time you are playing back something from
Audible, etc.:

1.
Pause the playback on the audio in question.

2.
Open the control panel via a VoiceOver gesture.

3.
Single-finger tap and hold on the audio button. This will open a dialog box in
which you can disable spatial audio.

My steps may be a bit off as I have not performed this in 16.2 but it should be
the same as in previous versions of the OS.

Please give it a try and let us know how it goes.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Surprisingly it's jnot just a USA or iPHone 14 thing,

I have the air pods pro gen 1,
And my pods do a spacial weird thing from my iPHone 13 pro max and ios 16.2
when I'm on a phone call or listening to an audio book.

It's been annoying me since I updated to 16.2

Hello Everyone,

I have noticed that when making Facetime calls on my 14, via wired Apple
Earpods, the audio output is different than it is when I am listening to audio
anywhere else in the OS. The audio sounds is kind of spacial, or something.

This is not the case when making Facetime calls on my beloved 8 Plus running
iOS 15.x.

Has anyone else noticed this and, if so, is there a way to disable it? I am
not a huge fan of spacial audio, at least, not at this point.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark

Not only is the tone a little/ or a lot, quieter, but it seems longer to me,
and if you have any difficulty hearing it clearly, you probably start talking
before Siri is fully listening.
If using Hey Siri, I don’t' have any issues.
If holding in the button, you have to wait until the tone has fully stopped
before it will hear everything you say.

2023-01-02 Thread Richard Turner
Not only is the tone a little/ or a lot, quieter, but it seems longer to me,
and if you have any difficulty hearing it clearly, you probably start talking
before Siri is fully listening.
If using Hey Siri, I don’t' have any issues.
If holding in the button, you have to wait until the tone has fully stopped
before it will hear everything you say.

Re: Printing QardioArm Reading?

2023-01-02 Thread Ann Byrne

Select the column with ctrl+spacebar.
Press alt+h, then o, then i.

that should do it. If JAWS reads ###, though, the column is not wide
enough. In that case, press alt+h, then o, then w, and increase the
number by 5 and press enter.

these are instructions for Excel on a PC. I hope that's what you need.

Hello Joshua,

I am sorry to learn that you are having problems with iOS 16.2 and iPhone 13.

Can you please list a few of these problems as I know of at least 2 local
VoiceOver users who are preparing to buy 13 models and I am certain they would
appreciate any items you could share.

List member Sieghard, as many will recall, just purchased an iPhone 13 Pro and
I do not believe he has listed any OS problems with his phone, yet.

Thank you,

Mark

RE: Ring Update

2023-01-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have no issues ending a call, of course if the screen locks during your call
you may have to wake up the phone, but I have virtually no issues with iOS 16.2
any more at this point.

Hi all:
So for months the Ring app was broken with iOS 16 all builds. Worked fine in
15. Well Ring updated the app to 5.5.50 and iOS 16.2 works great with it.
So Yay I moved to iOS 16.2. Well looks like Ring is the only thing that works.
Gees. Voiceover rate is faster on a slower setting. Fine I can deal. Siri sucks
and won’t respond the right way. Been there done that. Fine.. What I cannot
deal with is when you make a call, put phone to your ear, then pull it away,
screen is black. You cannot end call, nor disable VO. Its awful.

RE: SuperSense?

2023-01-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It's everybody's decision to buy something and Apple never has made claims
about retroactively refunding somebody because an app goes on sale. If you buy
a product at any store and it goes on sale the next day then unless the store
has a policy to price match their own sale prices you are also out of luck. We
get this every year around Christmas at my retail store, people buy something
before Christmas and there is always one or two who come back afterwards and if
we have a sale on the item for boxing week they want to return it and get it
for the cheaper price.

I agree, especially since I just purchased it and then it went on sale. This
was at least a year ago even though I had sent them the information stating
that I just purchased and it went on sale. All I was told well I’m sorry about
that so I will never recommend it to anyone else, especially in light of what
you have all said I agree hardly.

Super Sense is not so super when it comes to updates.
Here is what they have to say about their latest update:
We'd been receiving many requests from our users and are responding to them
with the feature updates that have been in highest demand. Below are the most
recent updates to Supersense: 1) Minor bug fixes More exciting news and
features are on the way! As always, we appreciate any feedback to provide our
users with the best solutions. Please let us know what you think about
Supersense by sending your thoughts to

Somehow, minor bug fixes don't qualify as anything special; but that seems to
be all they have in this update beside pushing their 50% off sale until January
1.

Re: Mentions and Group Conversations on iPhone

2023-01-02 Thread Mike B.
Good morning Margaret,

I don't have Mentions on my rotor and I don't have it in Accessibility /
Voiceover / Rotor either. I don't have a clude as where or how you would
remove it from the rotor. I tried doing a couple of searches for removing
the Mentions option from the rotor and only got some Youtube links, which I
didn't listen to since they're usually done, for and by, sighted folks.
Hopefully another list member can help us both out with an answer>

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Hi, Mike:

The first part went fine, but I'm not finding mentions in settings,
accessibility, VoiceOver, rotor to delete mentions from the rotor. Is
it somewhere else or am I not awake enough or...?

Thanks,

Margaret

Re: Printing QardioArm Reading?

2023-01-02 Thread Ann Byrne

When you open the Qardio app
1. Double tap qardio menu (the first thing on the screen).
2. double tap qardio arm.
3. Flick right a few times to history.
4. . double tap history.
5. double tap send history.
6. email the history to yourself.
7. it will be in a .csv file. In our experience the date column
needs to be widened.
8. The file will include all of your readings from the beginning of
time, so you will probably want to edit it.
9. When it's ready, you can print it or email it or just use it for
the kids to color on the back.

Good Afternoon, All:

I'm hoping someone can help me tame  a couple things in the iPhone
messages app that have been annoying me.

When I finish composing or sending a message, I often hear mention or
mentions or mentioned and one of these is in my rotor.  My search so far
shows that this seems to have something to do with group conversations
and if I am mentioned.  I do not participate in any group conversations.
Running IOS 16.1.2, In settings: messages; mentions notify me is off.
Group conversationing is on.  Am I correct that I want to turn it off?
Share name and photo is off;share it with you is on and I think I'm not

One article I found says that Keep in mind that the notify me setting as
off "will only be useful if you’ve already muted the group
conversation."  I'm not getting a lot of messages from someone or many
unwanted message, so, at this point, don't see the need to mute.

To slim down the rotor, can I remove the mentions item?

Any help is much appreciated,

Margaret

RE: A Question about Facetime Audio Output in iOS16.2: It is Different than on other Apps

2023-01-02 Thread Marilyn and Don Bilderback
Good deal, Mark. At least now you know what it is. Yes, I know. Change when
it comes is difficult to adapt to. Some days I wish for the good old days.
Smile Hey, I remember having a crank phone and party lines. Now phones change
nearly every day. At my age, I just want my phone to work!!

Thanks to friends and these tech lists, we can get answers in a short time,
usually. Thank God and geeks...

Hello Marilyn,

Thank you for re-posting this.

While interesting, this did not pinpoint the source of the enhanced audio in
face time.

However, I was able to determine that the new audio sound, when in Face Time,
is a function of the 14 and not of the OS.

iOS 16.2 on the 11, the iPad, and a couple of other phones does not reproduce
the effect. The effect has nothing to do with VoiceOver, either.

I was able to contact a friend, who also recently purchased iPhone 14 Pro and
he confirmed the enhanced sound effect which, is not bad; it just makes the
person on the other end sound as though they are in the same room as you are.
I know, I know, I should be pleased, right? Put it down to me being a man who
does not like unexpected or unexplained change (big smile).

Mark

Hello Everyone,

I have noticed that when making Facetime calls on my 14, via wired Apple
Earpods, the audio output is different than it is when I am listening to audio
anywhere else in the OS. The audio sounds is kind of spacial, or something.

This is not the case when making Facetime calls on my beloved 8 Plus running
iOS 15.x.

Has anyone else noticed this and, if so, is there a way to disable it? I am
not a huge fan of spacial audio, at least, not at this point.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Mark
