RE: Power Bank Etc. For iPhone and Storms

2023-11-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You must live in a part of the world which may experience serious
storms/hurricanes where power outages can last many days.
Anker has such a solution as well, 2400 Watts (2048 WH or Watt Hours) with a
second battery to double that capacity and an optional 200 Watt capacity solar
charging panel:
Anker SOLIX F2000 (PowerHouse 767) - 2048Wh | 2400W - Anker Canada
And there is another company called Bluetty which does similar stuff.
Of course most people don't want to require a backpack to lug around their
battery and at least for me I don't need a separate hotspot because I have a
lot of data for my iPhone and if I want to use my laptop somewhere I don't have
Wi-Fi I can simply use my iPhone as a hotspot.

Hi.

I'll throw another power bank to consider. It's a lot more expensive, but for
what it does, it's great. Check out

http://goalzero.com

They make a battery that works quite well. I have two of these, the Yeti 200X
and the Yeti 1000X. The numbers refer to the wattage these give. The 200X has
an AC plug on it, two USB A, 2 USB c, and a 12 volt plug, which is a lighter
adaptor. It has a display on it, and weighs six pounds. I put it in a back pack
to power my 5G hot spot. The 1000X has the same plugs on it, with the addition
of a second AC outlet. As I said, these ain't cheap, the 200X costing about
$300, and the 1000X costing about $1,400. The 1000X is pretty large, but I got
it for a long lasting backup to power my internet, computer, and smart
speakers. If you want portability, what I'm mentioning isn't the best solution,
but it works for me.

Just throwing something out there. Oh yeah, the 1000X can have another battery
added to it to give even longer lasting backup. I might do that at a later
time, but I think this adds $400 to the cost. These batteries also can have
solar cells added to them to charge them.

Anker makes great power banks, so does Mophie, Ugreen and Otterbox.

But as a word of caution, if you rely on iTunes for backups or transferring
files then don't install the Apple Music app because if you do iTunes won't
work at all any more until you uninstall Apple Music.

RE: Having to repeatedly authorize my computer in itunes

2023-11-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And I heard from at least one or two people over the last couple of years that
the Microsoft Store version works better.
There are also the new Apple apps, Apple Music, Apple TV and Apple Devices
which ultimately will replace iTunes.
I don't really use iTunes on the computer any more, but just out of curiosity I
installed the Apple Music app and it works quite well.

Try a different version of iTunes. Grab the one from Ninite. You should only
have to authorize i"Tunes once and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the tip, I just increased it to what you said, now I have to see how
that goes over the next couple of days, but if it fixes the issue then this
would be great although I still think Apple Accessibility should get an email

This might be the setting that you are refering to, but I was experiencing the

set it to 0.50 or more. I did this, and it totally did away with the problem.

Hope this helps.

Anyways, downgrading is not possible any more so you’ll have to put up with it

The time to go back to iOS 16 has long passed, this is only possible for a
short while after a major new version of iOS comes out, but Apple stops signing
the older versions usually after a few weeks. Having said this, which iPhone do
you have and what exactly are you not happy about with iOS 17? iOS 17.2 is
probably being released in the next couple of weeks and it takes care of a few
more issues and with the exception with the double tap sometimes registering as
a single tap, I have very few other problems at this stage.

Here is an article from Mac Rumors regarding the downgrading:

Downgrading an iPhone From iOS 17 to iOS 16 is No Longer Possible
Wednesday October 4, 2023 9:17 pm PDT by
Joe Rossignol
Following the release of iOS 17.0.3 earlier today, Apple has stopped signing
iOS 16.6.1,
iOS 17, and iOS 17.0.1, preventing iPhone users from downgrading to any of
those software versions. Apple continues to sign iOS 17.0.2 for now.
Notably, this means that it is no longer possible to downgrade an iPhone from
iOS 17 to iOS 16. It is not possible to downgrade to iOS 16.7.
Apple routinely stops signing older iOS releases over time in order to prevent
users from downgrading to previous software versions.
iOS 17.1 is expected to be released later this month.

New version of Brave

2023-11-25 Thread Kelby Carlson
Does anybody use Brave browser on iOS? I hadn't updated it in awhile, and the
newest version is basically unusable. VO refuses to focus on any part of the
screen; the only way to even get to the elements of a page is by going to the
top or bottom of the screen. Also, the address bar has moved to the bottom of
the screen, and trying to alter that setting accomplishes nothing.

A friend said she’d been told that going into settings, Accessibility and then
voice and changing response from 1.10 to 1.04 helped, and I have tried this,
and thought initially it had helped but after an afternoon of frustration
again, I’m not sure it has.

Yes, this is certainly a bit of an issue for me as well although it is not as
bad as in the beginning and it’s almost gone in iOS 17.2 which as I said should
be out maybe not next week, but the week after that.

Anyways, downgrading is not possible any more so you’ll have to put up with it
until it gets fixed, hopefully you wrote to Apple Accessibility and request in
strong but nice words that this really needs to be fixed.

Here is an article from Mac Rumors regarding the downgrading:

Downgrading an iPhone From iOS 17 to iOS 16 is No Longer Possible

Wednesday October 4, 2023 9:17 pm PDT by

Why?

RE: Power Bank Etc. For iPhone and Storms

2023-11-25 Thread Kevin Minor

RE: Power Bank Etc. For iPhone and Storms

2023-11-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And there is also Hyperjuice which can be found a little on Amazon, but it’s
primarily via their own store, www.hypershop.com
They started out with a campaign on Indigogo for their 245 Watt battery pack
and desktop charger, but they have lots of other products now.
I have the big battery and it’s super well-made, all metal and with a display
(yes, I know, maybe not the best for blind folks), but it has 4 USB-C ports and
it’s a very large capacity battery if you are looking for something which lasts
for a long time and this can even charge a laptop as it delivers up to 100
Watts on 1 or 2 of the ports.
I just ordered their 5000 MAH magnetic charger which is quite small and sticks
to the back of the iPhone and which was on sale for $34.99 US, but it does not
come with a wall charger. The nice thing is that it supports pass-through
charging which means if it is connected to your iPhone and you plug it in to
charge, it will first fully charge your iPhone and only then the battery will
start to charge. It also has I believe 1 or 2 additional USB-C ports.
I ordered it along with a 140 Watt wall charger in a small travel format with
foldable prongs, here some links:

Hyperjuice Magnetic Batterry
Pack

There is also a 4-in-1 charger which sounds very interesting as many of the
MagSafe chargers are 3-in-1, but this one offers an extra USB-C port to charge
an additional device apart from the iPhon/Apple Watch/Airpods magnetic charging
options and it does offer the full 15 Watts for the fastest charging of the
newer phones:

It shows up here as the first entry when I search for Anker 733. I can't think
of any reason why it wouldn't be available in the US. You could also look at a
comapny called UGreen which produces similar chargers. Anker certainly isn't
the only game in town.

Not so sure how much help you get asking a bunch of blind folks to explain how
a sighted person should use an Apple Pencil, just my thought.
Why not Google it or check on YouTube, there are tons of reviews and videos on
how to do all sorts of stuff which a blind person would never do anyways.

My computer is authorized but when I play songs, the authorize dialogue appears
repeatedly. I have to authorize the computer for each song over and over again.
Why?

Re: Power Bank Etc. For iPhone and Storms

2023-11-25 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, Michael:

on Amazon.com, I found a case for the Anker GAN Prime733 that you
mentioned, but nothing for the device itself. There were Anker numbers
for power banks close to 733, but no Anker GAN Prime733. Did I just
miss it? Is there a new model? I'm in the U. S.

Many thanks,
Margaret

it won't do is act as an uninterruptable power supply. You'd have to
push a small button to engage the battery if power failed.

Hi Michael,
I wouldn't leave your power bank plugged in 24 / 7, it could cause
premature failure being that if it loses just a little bit of charge
it's constantly recharging.  I normally check my power bank every so
often and I won't charge it until it needs it, or we need to go
somewhere and I want to make sure it's fully charged.

Hello Margaret. I've really come to appreciate the Anker GAN Prime
733 which combines a 1 MAH power bank and wall charger in one
handy device. I leave it plugged in all of the time so I know it'll
be full when I need it. It has folding plug prongs which let you
plug it directly into the wall socket or power bar. It has two USB C
ports and a USB A port. You'd also need a Lightning to USBC cable
which Anker makes.
I also have a 2 MAH battery from Energrid. It gives audio beep
feedback and vibrates to let you know when something's connected or
when it's charging. Between those two batteries, I know I'm covered
for a good eight or nine full iPhone charges. That'll see me through
around three or four days. More if I'm conservative.
If you're worried about longer spans of time, there are much bigger
power banks. The two batteries I have are very portable and both
will easily fit in a shoulderbag. Besides the USBC to Lightning
cable, I would also suggest you get a spare USB C to USB C cable.
That may be useful for other accessories like USB headsets,
emergency radios or Bluetooth keyboards. You can always charge other
power banks while you have electricity using the ports in the 733
charger. Hope that helps a bit. Amazon has a slight discount here in
Canada on a number of Anker products. Doubtless, this is true in the
US also. There are a very wide range of other bands and you'll
hopefully hear from people more experienced with those as well.

RE: About some apps not having some sort of "Never-locking" option?

2023-11-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Correct, apps can overwrite the automatic locking so if this is something you
want in Overcast I'd suggest it to the developer. In the Paprika recipe app
this is something you can either turn on or off in the Settings area of Paprika
and therefore it should be possible to be available in Overdrive.

RE: About some apps not having some sort of "Never-locking" option?

2023-11-25 Thread Richard Turner
There is no way other than tapping or flicking on the screen within every 5
minutes to keep it unlocked.
Or, like you say, setting the lock to Never while using that app.
Some apps, however, if you manually lock the phone when you start playing a
show will keep playing.
I think Overcast does, but it has been a while.
If streaming a TV show or movie, check to see if there is a picture-in-picture
option, if so, activate that with a double tap, wait a few seconds and lock the
phone and it will keep playing.
That is how I manage it with things I am playing through the Xfinity stream app.

About some apps not having some sort of "Never-locking" option?

2023-11-25 Thread Gerardo Corripio
As a bit of background, I've got my IPHone set up to lock itself after 5
minutes (I wish it had every ten like my 9th Generation IPad does)… thus I'd
like for apps like "Overcast" among others, to respect this; I could be
engrossed in a podcast within the "Overcast" app, or reading something within
the "BookPlayer" app, and next thing I know, the IPHone locks by itself! I've
looked into "Overcast" settings, but can't find anything regarding
"never-locking" or similar. So is there no way, if the app lacks this setting,
to make the IPHone never lock except by changing this within the IPHone
Settings itself to "never lock"? Which I wouldn't have to one to do because
most of the time, I'd like for the IPHone to lock itself.

Re: Siri and iOS 17 problem

2023-11-25 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, Mike:

Thank you, but I updated several days ago and, back then, I remembered
about restarting the phone when it acts weird and it didn't help.

Hi Margaret,

I seem to recall folks posting after the release of iOS 17 that the
double tap time-out setting was changed to lower the speed needed to
execute a double tap. The effect of this would require you to double tap
faster in order for it to register.

Go to Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, and double tap time-out witch
will be near the bottom of the screen. Mine was currently set to .25
seconds and I executed the increment button to make it .3 seconds which
I like better since I don't have to double tap quite as fast. Play
around with that setting to see if it helps you.

Good luck.

is still here and it might have been the problem earlier.  It took about
a half dozen tries for the phone to recognize my double taps.  I got the
phone 2 years ago yesterday and, as far as I know, I'm double tapping
the same as I always have and the phone has just gone nuts.

Re: Siri and iOS 17 problem

2023-11-25 Thread Margaret Thomas

Hi, Alan:

Thank you. Mine was set the same as yours and someone on another list
with the same phone as mine made the same amount of change you did and
got some improved results. So, I did the same and incremented from .25
to .3 and, so far, things are better. I'll play with it more if need be.

Just my opinion but it seems to me like Apple has come out with one of the

It’s also possible that since they got rid of the hay in hey Siri, if your
friend has that enabled, Siri could be listening and hear anything and quit,
because it thinks you’re doing something. Try disabling hands-free Siri and
just use the side button and see if that helps. I never have used hey Siri
except on my HomePod. I have no problem pressing the side button.
