Re: HOw to get info on stars etc in The Night Sky

2012-06-04 Thread Jan Blüher
Hallo Cara and list,

it only works if you bought the info pack for 1,59€ (1.99$). In the basic
version the target button and the label that tells you, where you are looking
at, is not there. I just bought the info pack and they appeared.

Greetings

 Hi again All,

Well I've just figured out how to get info on the star or body that you are
viewing in The Night Sky. It was so simple but not obvious. :)

The object you're looking at is in the center of the screen and is read by VO
when you tap it. Just above this is a button labeled 'Target.' Double tapping
this button brings up a screen with info about the item being viewed. There
is a back button in the top left corner which allows you to go back to the
viewing screen. It's as simple as that! :)

What was confusing me was that there is a caption below the viewed item that
says 'tap for info.' So tapping this actually does nothing but tapping the
target button just above the body being viewed will show the info.

 So there ya go!

This is the first accessible augmented reality sky app that I've seen.

 Enjoy!

 Cara :)

Subject: A Time to Wear iPhone Around my Neck

A time to sing, a time to dance, and a time to wear my iPhone around my
neck.
As incredible as the iPhone is, it seems fragile to me. Dropping and
breaking the phone is a concern of mine. I don't want the phone around my
neck at all times, but there are instances that I've thought it would be a
good idea for convenience and security of the phone. Here are a few
examples.
Walking a new route: I like to use the neck holder while using Ariadne and
MyWay, along with the Aftershocz headphones. I enjoy having my hand free,
and being able to simply touch the phone when I want information. I clip the
headphone controller to the cable, and coil the excess line with a twist
tie.
Navigating in a car: I enjoy playing navigator, but I find it a little
annoying to hold the phone the entire drive. When I place the phone on the
seat between my legs, I have a way of forgetting i put it there and leave
the car without it. I find it a bother to put the phone in and out of my
pocket while seated and belted in.
Security: I'm not constantly paranoid of getting the phone ripped from my
hand, but I have heard stories. With this holder, the phone is much more
secure from a spontaneous grab.
Workouts: I use my phone with a treadmill and elliptical. When I reach for
the phone from the machine's little shelf, I'm often concerned it's going to
slip from my sweaty grip and break on the equipment. With my around the neck
holder, I can check my time, change music, take calls etc. The holder comes
with a rain coat type sleeve. It protects the phone from moisture, and it
has a little hole for the headphones.
Around the house: In a private environment like my home, it's nice to have
my phone with me, while I go through my routines. I can wear comfortable
clothing without pockets, and don't have to blindly dash for the phone I
left somewhere when it sounds an alert. Surely, I can't be the only guy that
has had the phone propped between the head and shoulder while talking and
taking a leak at the same time? I've had so many vivid visions of the phone
splashing in the toilet bowl.
This isn't a sales pitch, it means nothing to me whether you want one or
not. I just found something that meets some of my desired convenience, and
wanted to share in case someone else thinks a little like me. I think the
site's description is clear and accurate, so I won't go into that. It is
easy to slide the phone in and out of the holder. The one part that I find a
little difficult is switching the neck cables. I don't do this often, so
it's not a big deal to me.

Re: How do I delete audible books from my phone?

2012-06-04 Thread Kimber Gardner
These instructions were very helpful once I realized I had to be in
the audible app for it to work. g

I have a related question. Why is the list of audible books different
depending on whether I am in the audible app or in the music library
and looking at playlists? This is confusing. I have four audible books
currently on my phone, but when in the audible app I see only one.

Obviously there's some piece I'm missing here so any info will be appreciated.

Re: question about My Tunes Pro

2012-06-04 Thread Brett

 Geepers! Did I write that!

Lets try again.

The app is fully accessible, but there are some minor accessibility
quirks. When ever you click a button that changes screens, the easiest
way to see the new information is to touch the top left of the screen
where the back button is, then flick through the screen that way.
VoiceOver still seems to see things from other screens if you don't
start from the back button. There are a couple of things which are
slightly oddly labelled, but its easy to figure it out.

I do like the crossfading and the custom equalizers, I don't like the
SRS feature, so don't use it. I also don't use the normalise feature as
it slightly clips your tracks and there is currently no way to adjust
the normalise level.

I do personally like the app and think that it is worth the money, music
does sound better. However, it's quite difficult to search for specific
tracks or artists though.

Cheers,

Brett

So,

it could be a few days, or today could be the last one. I use the News

Hello all, this app is free now and is Voice Over friendly. It will

problems or areas of concern with your contacts. For example, contacts

Well I've just figured out how to get info on the star or body that you are
viewing in The Night Sky. It was so simple but not obvious. :)

The object you're looking at is in the center of the screen and is read by
VO when you tap it. Just above this is a button labeled 'Target.' Double
tapping this button brings up a screen with info about the item being
viewed. There is a back button in the top left corner which allows you to go
back to the viewing screen.

 Enjoy!

RE: Ariadne or Sundero Look Around?

2012-06-04 Thread Sandy Finley
How accurate is the monitoring feature? In my daily commute I walk down the
one side of a street that has a sidewalk. To use a convenient short cut to
the subway, I have to cross the street at a particular place in the middle
of the block to locate a flight of steps that goes down off of the bluff we
live on. Again, I cannot walk on the same side of the road as the steps and
locate them that way because there is no sidewalk. I have found landmarks to
help me find the spot accurately but I wonder if the monitoring feature
would just be another tool. Can I include the steps as a Favorites and have
Ariadne tell me when I am about to approach them?

OT: Playing M4A Files on a Windows XP Machine

2012-06-04 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings to the list.

It appears that even the latest version of Windows Media Player will
not play M4A files on a Windows XP machine. I have these files set to
play via iTunes, but it seems silly to load a big program such as
iTunes just to play small files I have saved to my Dropbox account via
my iPhone. Is there a plugin I can use? This is a non-issue with
Windows Media Player and my Windows 7 computer.

Thank you for all help.

Re: A Time to Wear iPhone Around my Neck

2012-06-04 Thread David Chittenden
Hello,

Nope, it is not exaggerated. I am hoping that one of my accidents will damage
it so that I can use my insurance to replace it. It fell in to water a few
months ago, so will no longer be repaired by Apple or my carrier. Only my
renters content insurance will cover it, and only then if by accident. The 6
foot drop - I am 6 foot 1 and live on a hill. The iPhone was on my shoulder. I
was on the edge of the sidewalk. The street is asphalt. The phone dropped to my
downhill side in to the street gutter, so a fall of almost 6 feet.

I don't lie, so am thus far unable to make an insurance claim to replace my
phone. At this rate, it will be replaced in October or so when the next iPhone
is released.

Oh, and my iPhone and keys have resided in the same pocket for two years now. I
don't really care if my phone gets minor scratches, but my friends say there
are no scratches on it.

the right angle on the exact sweet spot of the glass, it will shatter. Mine
has dropped 6 feet on to concrete without any marks. It regularly gets
scratched by my keys without any marks, whatsoever. I have dropped it and
then accidentally stepped on it without any marks or damage. Because I will
be replacing it later this year, I have been a bit less careful and it works
without any problems, and it doesn't have any marks on it.

counter, it hit the floor (tiles on concrete) and skittered across the
floor for about 3 more feet. I just about had a heart attack since I
had just gotten it a few weeks before, but to my amazement the glass
didn't even have a scratch let alone a crack. I don't recommend this
as a test and it's not something I repeat with my 4S now to show
people how tough this thing really is, but I think it is a lot tougher
 than many people think.

Re: How do I delete audible books from my phone?

2012-06-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi, you can get Audible books into your phone in 1 or 2 ways. Either via
iTunes or via the net without iTunes. If you sync from iTunes, then
Audible will see those books and so might your music library. However if
you get a book from the Audible app by itself and no iTunes, then only

 Hi again All,

Well I've just figured out how to get info on the star or

The object you're looking at is in the center of the
screen and is read by VO when you tap it. Just above this
is a button labeled 'Target.' Double tapping this button
brings up a screen with info about the item being viewed.
There is a back button in the top left corner which
allows you to go back to the viewing screen. It's as
 simple as that! :)

What was confusing me was that there is a caption below
the viewed item that says 'tap for info.' So tapping this
actually does nothing but tapping the target button just
above the body being viewed will show the info.

 So there ya go!

This is the first accessible augmented reality sky app

 Enjoy!

I have a related question. Why is the list of audible books different
depending on whether I am in the audible app or in the music library

currently on my phone, but when in the audible app I see only one.

Obviously there's some piece I'm missing here so any info will be
 appreciated.

Re: HOw to get info on stars etc in The Night Sky

2012-06-04 Thread Jan Blüher
Hallo Fanus,

when starting the app, there is a butto called Info in the lower right of the
screen. If you press it, you will be asked for the in-app purchase of the Info
pack. Before deselecting it in the settings, there was also a bigger view
announcing this possibility.

Ah, so the app is essentially limited without purchasing the
info pack. Maybe that extra purchase is worth it if you
really can get some extra info.

 Hi again All,

Well I've just figured out how to get info on the star or
body that you are viewing in The Night Sky. It was so
 simple but not obvious. :)

This is the first accessible augmented reality sky app
 that I've seen.

 Enjoy!

 Cara :)

Re: A Time to Wear iPhone Around my Neck

2012-06-04 Thread Steve Robertson
I think I may order one of these holders. Yesterday I was dumping empty
cans and bottles in to the plastic re-cycling container and my I Phone
4 s fell out of my shirt pocket and in to the recycling container! What
a pain, grin, I had to tip the container, dig through empty cans and
bottles to find my I Phone, and worst of all, when I pulled it out of
the container it smelled like a stale beer!

Fortunately, it was easy enough to clean up and appears to be no worse
for ware.

I thought some of you might get a kick out of my experience.

Steve Robertson

Original message:

Hi Brett,

Those are all good examples when that neck holder would be convenient
and useful. Just to add to what you said about the iPhone being
fragile. I once dropped my iPhone 4, in fact it was on my store's
counter (about 3 and a half feet high) and I sort of swiped it off the
counter, it hit the floor (tiles on concrete) and skittered across the
floor for about 3 more feet.

Take care,
Sieghard

Re: Spotify?

Hi Eric.

Here are the reasons for I've given up on Spotify:
1: The app is totally inaccessible on the Mac.
2: The app on the iPhone works okay, but it's not fully accessible. Or, it

So why should I pay for being able to only listen to music on my iPhone when I

 Hi Crystal,

I don't usually use a case, I like the naked feel of the iPhone. The maker
of this iPhone holder will fit the holder to any specific case one may use
 with their phone.

Re: iGrill (bluetooth thermometer review

2012-06-04 Thread Scott Bresnahan

Hello,

I'd like to address the few follow up questions that came up after my post.

Digital thermometers in general, use a metal probe that you press
into the meat and leave there. The probe is probably about three
inches long and then has a 90 degree bend, so it looks like a capital
L. Then, running off the end of the probe, is a 48 inch insolated
metal wire. At the end of the wire is a plug much like a head phone
jack, that plugs into one of two jacks on the base unit. There are
two types of probes, one designed for meat, and one designed for
ambient temperature. The unit comes with two probes designed for
meat.

Yes, this device works fine in any oven or grill. It is designed
that you close the lid or door on the small metal wire, and I've not
found that to be a problem on the oven or grill.

The device is designed for temp ranges between 32 and 400 degrees
Fahrenheit. So, for very hot ovens or grills this may be a problem,
but for low and slow, it's well within my range that I'm looking for.

My smoker is a charcoal smoker made by the Weber company. It's
called the Weber Smokey Mountain. I use a web site at
http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/ as my Weber smoker resource. I'd
say this is a fairly dangerous thing to do for a blind person, but I
lost my vision over time to RP, so I have a lot of mental muscle
memory for this process. The riskiest thing I do, is pouring hot
coals into my fuel chamber from a chimney starter to get the grill
going. Once that's done, It's just a matter of playing with the
vents to produce the right temp. A pair of kevlar oven gloves does
the trick of keeping my hands safe.

Hope this helps.
--Scott

Greetings,

I do a lot of grilling, and more important, slow smoking of ribs,
brisket and pork and other great meats. (It's times like this I
feel sorry for the vegetarians out there.) But, one of my biggest
problems was getting a meet and grill temperature reading during the
cooking process. About a year ago, I noticed a product called
iGrill by iDevices Inc. The url is http://www.igrillinc.com/ that
had a wireless bluetooth digital thermometer and iPHone/iPod/IPad
application. I instantly downloaded the free app, to see how well
it worked with voiceover, and was disappointed. Last week, I
noticed an update for the app that included a bug fix bullet item
reading improved voiceover support. I downloaded the app and
checked it out. Things looked very very promising, but I didn't
have the hardware. That all changed with a recent UPS delivery.
I'm very pleased with their progress, and feel it is a very useable
solution with most features accessible, and I'm sharing my review
here.

I opened the box and it came with a base unit, two temperature
probes, and batteries. Without reading a thing, I was able to
install the batteries, and plug in the two probes. The front of the
unit has three touch sensitive buttons. Not my first choice for a
blind user, but they are dimpled and distinguishable. At this
point I ran the iGrill application on the phone and listened to the
getting started instructions. The three buttons are power and plus
and minus The plus being above the minus and the power being to the
left of those two. However, other than the power button, the device
can be controlled entirely from the iOS application, so you really
don't need to worry about the plus and minus buttons on the unit.

As instructed by the online documentation accessible via the
application, ,I pressed all three buttons to enable the device to
pair, and sure enough, in Settings, General, Bluetooth, on my
iPhone, the iGrill showed up and could be paired.

.
The key to this product is in the iGrill application, a free
download from the Apple App Store. In the iGrill app, there are
Four major button tabs. Cooking, Tools, INfo and Settings.

The cooking button is where you have access to the remote
temperature probe data. If the device is off an not paired, this
section will read not connected. If the iGrill is on, you will see
readable data on two probes with current temperature, user defined
label, and alarm label. Flicking works perfectly and all data seems
easily and quickly accessible. You can rename the two probe labels
to anything you wish. Since I smoke, meat, I have one labeled as
meat and the other as grill. Logical examples might be fish or
chicken. The device comes with two probes designed for food. An
ambient temperature probe for grill surface can be purchased
separately. What I was stunned and pleasantly surprised to see, was
that there are a slew of predefined temperatures for a range of
foods that you can pick from that have the right temperature already
defined. Want that tuna the right temp, pick tuna. Want a chicken
done just right, select chicken. And, you may add your own items to
the list. Basically, this is a Label with a target temperature.
All totally

Re: Favorite bedside dock?

2012-06-04 Thread Traci
Hey all,

Thought I'd bring this topic back up.

Over the weekend, I bought a small, and I mean small, Sony clock radio with
dock on top. It is nothing spectacular, but it suits my bedside needs. It was
$35, has a radio, and charges both my iPhone4s and Nano 5th Gen. Both devices
can be docked while in their cases, and turning the volume up on the unit,

Thinking of buying a new iPhone

2012-06-04 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I'm planning to buy a new iPhone.
I have to decide between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.
The main feature in the 4S, I believe, is Siri.
But, then again, Vokul, which can be used on the iPhone 4, is equally good, I
 think.
So, are there any major differences between the iPhone 4 and 4S?

I look forward to reading your responses.

 Cheers,
 Rahul

Re: new iPhone 4S questions

2012-06-04 Thread Traci
Hello, congratulations on your new iPhone4s. I love mine. :)

I don't have the volume issues, but here's my suggestion. As far as I can
tell, there are 3 different volumes in the iPhone. The ringer, the phone, and
voice over. Generally, I have my ringer volume around 50-60, my phone volume,
which is in the far left of the app switcher around 40, then voice over is the
volume I change the most. Usually it is around the 65%, but sometimes at home,
I turn it way down. Hope that helps you a bit to tweak some of your personal
settings.

I wish I can remember the case I'm currently using. I bought it at Verizon, it
is red and the bottom portion of the case slides off for docking. Most of the
time though, I don't need to do this, and I dock my phone without any dock
adaptors. Another case I have used is from Spec, it has texture cloth material
on the back, and I've successfully docked it while in case. Again not using
any of those little plastic dock adaptors.

Good luck,

First, when I am making calls, the volume from VoiceOver and the tones from
the keypad are almost inaudible. I did not have this problem with losing
volume in the 3GS. Any suggestions?

Second, I purchased the Otter Box Defender case, and my phone no longer fits
my speaker docks unless I remove the phone from the case.

This isn't a big problem, just inconvenient.

Are there any docks meant for use so that you can leave your phone in the
 protective case??

 Any help is appreciated.

Re: Moving iTunes to a new computer

2012-06-04 Thread Traci
I hope someone else chimes in here, but my help is a bit limited. :)

My recommendation is to use an external hard drive or large enough USB drive.
Inside your my music folder, copy the entire iTunes folder over to the external
storage. This iTunes folder should contain everything: music, apps, playlists,
etc.

This is where I need someone else to chime in. My guess is you are going to
want to delete the default iTunes folder on the new machine, then paste your
old iTunes folder, but I'm not sure about this part. Some googling will help
you for sure. :)

Good luck, last Summer I moved my iTunes library from a windows machine to a
Mac.

The processor on the 4S is faster; the camera is better, which is helpful

Re: FaceTime on 4s not working

2012-06-04 Thread Kirsten Edmondson
I've checked and can't see anything random, except phone number saying dimmed
after it - did you say this didn't matter? I've discovered I can't FaceTime on
my iPad or iPhone even though they're both set up. I tried turning off both
FaceTime and the devices, but no difference.

On 5 Jun 2012, at 00:54, Veronica Elsea veron...@laurelcreekmusic.com wrote:

Here are a couple of hints about figuring this out.
First, go into settings and look for FaceTime. In mine it's just after phone.
Once you double tap on it, start swiping around and you should find, phone
number to use for video calls, as well as email address. If it says dimmed by
the phone number, that doesn't seem to bbe a ig deal. If it still says
verifying, then you haven't been completely found by the network. I turned
Facetime off, then reset my network settings, then turned Facetime back on
and it found me again. I did not have to enter the number manually. It was so
messy when I was working out the exact same problem that I ended up going
through Apple Care and this is what they had me do. So the simplest thing to
do actually might be to turn Facetime off, restart your phone, then turn
Facetime back on to see if that fixes things. It just might do the trick.
Anyway, hope this is a starting place at least.

RE: BBC IPlayer Global on a big screen:

2012-06-04 Thread Richard Turner
Unfortunately, I just get a message saying that my request couldn't be acted
on, or something like that.
I think it simply isn't available here yet, though it says on their web site
that it should have been in the U.S. late last year.

Thanks,
Richard

Foursquare and location services remaining open on iPhone 4

2012-06-04 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. As the subject says, I am having an issue where Foursquare
is forcing the location services to remain on even after I have closed
the app from the App Switcher. I have to physically go into settings,
location services, to turn Foursquare off. I don't want to have to
keep doing this each time I want to close Foursquare. I was wondering
if anyone else has run into this issue when using Foursquare? As a
result, my battery is going down a lot quicker than normal. I have an
iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1.1. I have tried rebooting my phone with no
change. thoughts?

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone here uses My Tunes Pro and if you do, what do
you think about it? I was asking some friends of mine for alternative
music players with more features than the Music app of the 4S and was
recommended to get this one. It has cross fading, normalizing, and various
other features. Apparently it will make your music sound much better.
Before I buy, I'd like to get some feedback from the list. The link is

Have you run across an app to get BBC world news?

For Richard and anyone else curious about this, it is the app. from the BBC
allowing people all over the world to watch BBC's programmes on their
I-devices without a UK TV license but for which you have to pay a subscription.
It is not available within the UK. It came out 3 months ago, the first version
was not very accessible and didn't work well, well, at least, it didn't on my
Pod but the update posted last week works perfectly.
Before committing to a subscription you can watch for or 5 selected
programmes different each week and published, in advance, in a dedicated
newsletter.
Sounds great for ex-pats who can't access BBC television.
The cost of the subscription is 6.50 Euros per months. The sound from the
app. is very good, would like to share the pictures with sighted members of my
family, reason for my enquiry on the list.
  Cheers now,
  Marie

Re: NFB Newsline app available in the app store for iPhone, iTouch and iPad

2012-06-04 Thread Tom Lange

Hi,
Thanks for the tip. I tried navigation by heading and it works great, but
instead of swiping right I did a two-finger swipe down to start reading at
the heading that I selected. Still have a lot of exploring to do but it's a
nice app; I like what I see so far.

Hi, I got the appa nd used it for a bit. It has a nice layout and if you
want to quickly go from article to article set your rotor to move by
headings. Then when you get to one you want to read, swipe once to the
right and it will be read out. Very nicely done for 1.0 version.

It really does work well. I haven't seen anything about this, but would
like to know if material which is downloaded stays on the phone itself
after you exit the application. I haven't seen any way to delete papers
etc., from the phone.

Thanks,
