Hello Nancy,

I strongly recommend that you download the free Apple support app from the App
Store.

Installing this app will give you easy-to-follow instructions on how to use
your phone and troubleshooting tips for the SE, if needed. It's a fun app that
is definitely worth the download.

Hi All, I am still using my SE just to make and receive phone calls. But, if I
wanted to learn more I think there was a place run by a kind gentleman where
you could input the kind of device and IOS you are using and then you could go
through lessons that got you familiar with your device.

Does anyone know that site? Or, if someone could tell me where to go to learn
more at my own speed I sure would appreciate it.

Many Thanks for your help!

RE: Is There a Bug in the Watch OS Timer App?

2017-12-27 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Shai and All,

Shai, thank you for confirming my issue. I was beginning to think I was going
crazy.

After having received all of your replies, I used Siri to set a custom time.
Subsequently, the custom timer function, as described in my original post, now
works perfectly.

Very weird, to say the least.

Thank you all for your help on this one.

Hello Mark,
I actually called Apple Accessibility about this issue in September as I had a
similar problem and was told that they could not reproduce my issue.
I was recommended to exit the timer app by pressing the digital crown once and
reopen it and then set the custom timer again. Once I did this, the start
button appeared as available. I was also told to try quitting the app in the
switcher and reopen it and if the problem persisted to also reset the watch. I
have the series 1.

Hi,

I had the same problem with the timer. Once I turned off VoiceOver and a
sighted person set the custom timer once, however, it worked fine.

Re: Sites for 'How to Use'

2017-12-27 Thread Richard Turner
There used to be a site called VoiceOver-Easy.net
but that site has not worked for months.
What you need to focus on is the iOS not the physical phone. All iPhones behave
the same, but there are slight variations depending which iOS version you are
running.
The iPhone SE is a fine phone and should be for a while longer.
You might try The Hadley Institute for the Blind iFocus videos which you can
find on their web page www.hadley.edu
or on YouTube.
Also, there are several books through National Braille Press by Anna Dresner
(not sure if I spelled her last name correctly) that are quite good.
HTH,
Richard

Hi

If you go to your Aunts profile or the profile of anyone on Facebook, select
About there should be contact info there if the people has the info available
to share. The contact email may not be the email that you would typically use
to contact people. The email address Im using to send this reply is the email I
use on a daily basis. My contact email on Facebook is an email address
generated by Facebook when I setup my account 8 years ago.

A Facebook Question

2017-12-27 Thread Tom Lange
I’ve been using Facebook for years, with both the mobile web site and the
Facebook app. My aunt’s birthday is today and I could write on her timeline or
contact her via e-mail but I don’t have her e-mail address. Is there a way to
retrieve her e-mail address through Facebook? I wasn’t sure if such a thing is
possible and have been curious about that for a long time. It seems like such a
capability might be useful for situations like this, and also for situations
where I’m trying to look somebody up on Facebook and get multiple hits but
can’t identify the correct person(s) by the image alone. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Is There a Bug in the Watch OS Timer App?

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, I attempted, without success, to set a custom countdown time via the
timer app, on my Apple Watch running the latest OS.

Try as I may, I could not activate the Start button as it remained, dimmed.

Steps to reproduce:

1.
Using the Timer Complication, launch the Timer app.

2.
Select Custom.

3.
Set any time interval and attempt to activate the Start button.

Can anyone reproduce this bug?

Perhaps it has already been posted to the list?

Thank you,

Mark

Re: From Moderator Mark: I just Want You All To Know

2017-12-27 Thread Kelly Pierce
Sieghard,

Yes, and Steve was not white either. Transformational technologies are
developed by teams, not a single person. When Apple introduced the
Macintosh in 1984, each computer shipped with the signatures of each
member of the core development team. Fast forward 20 years and Steve
is now less humble and the media has hyped the success of Apple to
unbelievable heights. Now, some anoint him as father of the iPhone
even though it was created by a team like the Mac.

similar problem and was told that they could not reproduce my issue.

RE: Grilling apps, was about Smart Kitchen Scales

2017-12-27 Thread Richard Turner
Thanks Terry,
But now that developers can see reviews and even respond to them, I'd hope
everyone would write a review, giving them the ranking you think they deserve
now.
I gave them 1 star.

It was much better in a previous rendition for sure.

I won't bother calling them.

I think getting their average rating down will do more to get their attention.

Later,
Richard

Hi,
Several of us have tried to contact them by phone with no avail. I have a phone
number and I have called them as well and found that they will listen to you
but they won’t do anything about it. Maybe they’re not listening maybe they’re
not hearing what we’re saying. It’s very very frustrating. If you have any
better luck let us all know. If you want to try the phone number contact me and
I’ll give it to you. Thanks

Try as I may, I could not activate the Start button as it remained, dimmed.

Steps to reproduce:

1.

Select Custom.

3.
Set any time interval and attempt to activate the Start button.

Can anyone reproduce this bug?

Perhaps it has already been posted to the list?

I'm happy and sad that I just read this message. My boyfriend bought me an
instant pot ultra for Christmas, but as we all know, it is not accessible. I
guess I'll be waiting until 2018 as well. At least I know what is going on!

RE: Sell your stuff with these apps that replace garage sales, USA Today

2017-12-27 Thread Cristóbal
OfferUp's app has some major accessibility issues. You can't access messages or
notifications from the opening screen of the app. Clicking on a notification
will get you there though. There are the typical unlabeled buttons and stuff
too.
LetGo could use some work, but is slightly better than OfferUp. 5Mile is
actually pretty accessible. Nextdoor has some issues that could be addressed,
but it's workable. Close5 is almost straight up spam.
It may be more difficult for a blind person to make a go at this, but you can
make some decent money and a living out of this by simply selling this way.
Cash is king baby.

Sell your stuff with these apps that replace garage sales By Jennifer Jolly,
Special for USA Today, Updated 5:59 a.m. PDT June 19,
2017

The sweltering heat is here and the icy lemonade is flowing - yep, it's
definitely summer. If you wrapped up your spring cleaning with a room full of
random stuff you don't need anymore - but is just too good to throw out!
- a garage sale might be next up on your list of to-do's.
But c'mon, it's summer and you have better things to do than sit outside all
day with cardboard signs haggling over a few pennies for your old stuff.
Here's how to have a virtual garage sale via simple smartphone apps.

VarageSale
VarageSale (iOS/Android) makes the process of getting your items in front of
local buyers super easy. You use the free app - or the VarageSale website - to
create a brief listing for each thing you're trying to get rid of. A quick pic,
short description, and your asking price is all you need, so you can go on a
serious listing spree in just a few minutes. It's fantastic for listing a bunch
of items one after another, so if you've got a whole garage full of goodies to
unload, this is your best bet. What's really great about VarageSale is you (and
everyone else) can log in using Facebook, which means everyone has a real name
and a face to go along with it, so no creepy contacts will flood your inbox.

OfferUp, Shpock
If you're really in a hurry, and just need to ditch a handful of things, there
are apps for that, too. OfferUp (iOS/Android) posts listings in as little as 30
seconds, and has a image-heavy browsing style that lets your eye-catching
photos do the selling for you, along with private messaging and reputation
ratings to weed out scammers and spammers.
Shpock (iOS/Android) works in the same way, but bills itself as being for
"beautiful" items, so if you're selling something that you think deserves some
seriously special consideration - like a fancy antique bike or pricey
electronics - it's a solid bet someone on Shpock will be interested.

Facebook, Nextdoor
These apps are great go-tos for moving used items in a hurry, but if you
absolutely don't want to mess around with any new apps whatsoever, you're still
in luck! Facebook is packed with pages full of local people buying and selling.
Head to Facebook, either on your phone app or web browser, and in the search
box at the top of the page, just type the name of your city or county along
with the words "buy and sell." In my experience, even the smallest towns have a
rummage page on Facebook, so the top listing in the search results is going to
be your go-to.
Nextdoor is a similarly simple way to show your neighborhood what you're
selling.
Of course, there's always the chance that your tiny township has missed out on
the Facebook train. That's okay! In that case, Craigslist is the old standby
that still produces results, even if the site looks like it is from 1999.
Create a quick listing, toss in a photo, and insist on email contacts only -
because giving your phone number on a public forum isn't a great idea
- and wait for a bite.

No matter which app, site, or virtual marketplace you end up using, the rules
for exchanging your stuff for cash are always the same: Always insist on
meeting in a public place, for safety, and never take checks. Seasoned local
sellers will tell you that the parking lot of your local police station is a
great place to make a sale, and nobody in their right mind is going to try to
scam you (or worse) with Johnny Law looking over their shoulder. And if you
don't feel like messing with paper money, an app like Square Cash (iOS/Android)
can take payments directly, with an added layer of security and peace of mind.

I know selling things online might not be for everyone - like if you just have
too much stuff to list, or a garage full of trinkets that need to be seen to be
appreciated - but if you're going with an old fashioned pack-the-driveway
rummage spree, your smartphone can make that easier, too.

Yard Sale Treasure Map (iOS/Android) is a community-based garage sale
listing app that puts your local newspaper classified section to shame. You
can create a notice for your sale in just a minute or two, complete with GPS
location and lists of your best goodies. It's also great for planning a
community yard sale, so don't be afraid to get your neighbors involved! And
if you end up having a whole bunch of stuff that doesn't sell, but you don't
want to just toss in the dumpster, a storage service like Clutter will come
to your house, pack it all up, and store it for you for a nominal fee.

RE: Problem Purchasing with the kindle app

2017-12-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That is correct and also applies to Audible. If anything is purchased via an
app then the developer has to pay Apple I think 30% of the purchase price and
of course Amazon is not about to give Apple 30% of their entire Audible and
Kindle book revenue.
I think this is wrong of Apple, if companies have original content like Amazon
does with Audible and Kindle Apple should not charge this, I’m sure if they
went to Amazon asking for a small fee like 2 or 3% they could reach an
agreement. At the same time it’s easy enough to jjust go online with the
computer or the iPhone to purchase a book and to then read it in the Kindle app
or listen to it in the Audible app.

Sieghard

If memory serves, there’s a lack of financial agreement between Amazon and
Apple about cost, so you have to purchase the book either on your computer or
the Amazon app, then you can download the book in the Kindle app.

Hope this helps!

Re: Problem Purchasing with the kindle app

2017-12-27 Thread Alan Lemly
You can't purchase Kindle books with the Kindle app or with the Amazon app. I
think this might be due to some restriction Apple places on apps for purchasing
content so that Apple makes sure it gets its cut but I'm not sure about that.

You can purchase from the Amazon site from Safari from your I device so the
easiest thing to do if you find a kindle book you want to bye while shopping
with either the Kindle or Amazon apps is to save it to a list to make it easier
to find again to purchase at the Amazon site on your computer or your I device
using Safari.

Good luck.

I searched for a book and could get a sample of the first chapter but I can not
find an icon for purchasing it. Is there a trick to get to that place in the
kindle app?

RE: iOS Accessibility of Smart kitchen scales

2017-12-27 Thread Mike Ulrich
So does anyone on this list know of a truly accessible grilling app, or I
should say a smart kitchen/meat temperature probe app?

I need something that is good up to 250 degrees F. It must be able to set
multiple temperature alarms.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't remember if I have the MyWay Vox3000 or 5000, but whichever one I have,
it still works fine, even after having it for a few years. Granted, I don't use
it too often, which could have something to do with it, but I have been using
it more lately, and as far as I know, it's working well. Now, there bathroom
scale didn't work well for me. The talking annoucement and the print numbers
didn't match after a while. I'm not sure if I couldhave recalibrated it, and I
had forgotten about the warranty, but I ended up getting rid of it and getting
a replacement by Taylor on Amazon for $16, which has been working extremely
well. It's a glass-top model, and has plenty of room for your feet.

Anyhow, I don't know that I'd get a smart scale for the kitchen. I wanted to
get an iGrill, but I've heard not so good things about the app since the
company changed hands, which is unfortunate.

Thanks,

Ari

Hello list,

I was wondering if anyone’s had experience with any smart kitchen scales and
whether they’ve found any of their accompanying apps to be VoiceOver accessible?

I read this San Francisco Chronicle article on smart appliances and how in
general they’re not catching on:
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Smart-kitchen-appliances-not-catching-on-yet-12453777.php

However, one thing that was mentioned aside from the popular instant pot which
has been brought up on a lot of blindness related lists and many of us in fact
have, are smart kitchen scales.

I currently use the My Weigh Vox 3000 talking kitchen scales and while the Vox
scales are pretty accurate and can measure to the gram, they’re always breaking
down on me. My Weigh supposedly offers something like a twenty year warranty,
but seriously, a scale lasts me around three and maybe four months if I’m
lucky. This last time I sent my two scales in for replacements, I got a note
back saying that this would be the last exchange they would be making. Not to
mention that you have to pay for shipping. That and unless you’ve got more than
one scale, you’re out of luck for the approximate three to four weeks it takes
for the turnaround from sending it out to getting a working unit back.

Gripes with My Weigh durability and their crappy warranty response, I’ve been
looking for an alternative. Unfortunately, for standalone talking scales,
they’re really the only game in town. At least if you want to the gram accuracy
anyway.

In any event, I came across a few “smart” kitchen scales on Amazon.

This:
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Perfect-Smart-Kitchen-Recipe/dp/B019C4PTSW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8

 =1514234018=8-3=Smart+kitchen+scale and
https://www.amazon.com/Drop-Scale-Connected-Step-Step/dp/B00TTY34KG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8

 =1514234018=8-5=Smart+kitchen+scale and
https://www.amazon.com/KitchenIQ-50872-Smart-Wireless-Kitchen/dp/B01D1ORYVE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8

 =1514234018=8-8=Smart+kitchen+scale

Has anyone had experience with any of these scales and again, do they know if
their accompanying iOS apps are VoiceOver accessible? I’m probably going to
reach out to these companies directly, but thought I’d touch bases in case
anyone’s already using them in their kitchen.

Ideally, I’d like to continue to use a simple standalone talking kitchen scale,
but considering that each Vox scale can go from $30 to $50 or more depending on
where and when you buy them. Not to mention the cost of shipping when you have
to send them in to be fixed/replaced. Spending a few bucks more for a bluetooth
connected one becomes a way more attractive option.

Thanks,

Cristobal
