Exactly, but Apple will of course not allow you to completely replace SIRI with

Hi, All,

Lately, it seems that I can either input text using my Smart Beetle Braille
display or input directly on my 6s phone. To use Braille input requires me to
unhide the onscreen keyboard; to input directly from the phone requires me to
unhide the onscreen keyboard. Is there a way to enter text via either method
withou having to switch the keyboard setting on and off?

Hi Brian,

Unfortunately, seeing ai does not offer this feature. However, you can use the
copy last spoken phrase voice over command to accomplish something similar. The
way this works is that you have VoiceOver speak the text that is in that photo.
Immediately after this text is spoken, do a three finger quadruple tap on the
screen and voiceover will copy the last thing it spoke to your clipboard. Now,
you can go to any edit field and copy the text into it. I hope this helps

available apps should show up. I’ve done this several times on my end and it
works. I wonder if the search is behaving a bit differently since I am in the
US? thanks for letting me know your experiences with this. I will see if there
is anything I can do to improve it.

Regarding Recognizer, it is in the process of being updated. So is not
presently on the App Store.

Let me just reiterate that I would really encourage people to use the
i...@looktel.com email address for any support needs. Since that will be the
fastest way to get your voices heard by the folks who really need to hear them
and can address those needs or issues.

Thanks again Sieghard. I wish I had better answers for you. :) Please have a
great rest of your day!

Cheers!

I was surprised to see Recognizer mentioned, I had purchased it when it first
came out and when I saw your message I thought I check it out since I haven't
seen any posts about it for years. It appears that it is abandoned since no
matter how I searched I could not find it in the app store. I also noticed that
the name of the developer for Nant Money Reader and the Voiceover Tutorial is
actually called "Ipplex", if I search for "nant" Money Reader comes up along
with a few other unrelated things, "Looktel" brings up the Voiceover tutorial
but not Money reader and a search for "Ipplex" brings up both. It's just an
opinion, but it's a bit confusing and it makes the apps hard to find.

Go to Settings, then Bluetooth, then the phone should find and pair with your

Unfortunately, i don’t remember where this button is, and i needed sighted help

RE: Importance of cleaning phone

2019-03-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Buying special products to clean your phone's screen is a waste of money, OK,
maybe a good microfiber cloth is an exception.

It's a piece of glass and a tough piece of glass at that. Yes, it does have the
Oleophobic coating which gives it a certain amount of finger smudge resistance,
but for the most part a soft cloth or even a couple of Kleenex will do the
trick, if not make the cloth wet with warm water, squeeze it well because you
want it damp but not dripping wet and just wipe the screen, then dry it using a
couple of Kleenex.

If you have a good microfiber cloth then use it or set one aside for this
purpose, you can dampen a corner for the tough dirt and then use the dry
portion to finish. Here is a good article with some information:

Oleophobic coating – what it is, how to clean your phone, what to do if the
coating wears
off

I prefer to use a good glass screen protector because not only will this allow
me to wipe it any which way I like since you can buy them on Amazon for about
$10 for a 3/pack so if it wears out I’ll just replace it. But for me the bigger
benefit comes when I want to buy a new phone which means I then will sell my
old one. I always keep the original packaging including those plastic films
that cover the screen and back of the phone. When I am ready to sell it I take
it out of the minimalist case I always have it in, I remove the screen
protector and wipe it all down with a nice soft cloth, again, first slightly
damp, then dry. After that and of course after resetting it back to factory
settings, I re-apply those thin plastic protectors, put everything back in the
original box. I usually go on Amazon and buy a new set of original Apple
Earpods which you can get for much cheaper on Amazon than from Apple and I then
advertise that it is a phone in perfect condition with a new headset and all
accessories in the original box. That usually goes a long way towards getting
the best price possible. My wife and I got the iPhone 8 at the beginning of
December and I recently sold my iPhone 6S Plus and my wife’s iPhone 6S, both
were 64Gb models, both were as described always in cases, with screen
protectors and we had the original packaging and we even gave the buyers the
new wall adapter, Lighting cable and I still had a couple of 3.5mm new headsets
which we no longer needed since the iPhone 8 needs the Lightning Earpods. I
advertised the phones locally on Varage Sale, a service similar to Craig’s List
and both sold within a few days. We asked $300 for my wife’s 6S and I sold it
for $250 and I sold my 6S Plus for the asking price of $400. That’s $650
combined and including the $150 downpayment and $15/month for 2 years for our
new iPhone 8 64Gb phones we’ll end up paying $1,020 in total for them, after
what we got for the old phones the new ones cost us a total of $370, $185 for
each of us for an iPhone 8, those are all Canadian Dollars.

Sieghard

Voiceover briefly says something like "OK" and sometimes maybe "Mic", but for
me if I say "Hey Google" and then wait for the tone that the Assistant is ready
and I ask, for example, What is the phone number for McDonalds" it tellsl me in
the Assistant voice and for me Voiceover is not talking at that point. There is
nothing I did and I am not aware of anything you can try. I have an iPhone 8,
not sure if this behavior could be slightly different on a different model
iPhone?

No, as I said in my original email:

I then unlocked my phone, got SIRI to listen and said "Hey Google" since I have
the Google Assistant app installed and I set up that shortcut in Settings >
SIRI and Search. This opened the Google Assistant app and got it to listen
right away.

The key here is "unlocked my phone" and " I have the Google Assistant app
installed".
the app of course has to open, but you can set up a SIRI Shortcut and record
whatever phrase you want to use, e.g. Hey Google" or, if you want "Hey, all
mighty and invasive search engine".
If you then bring up SIRI (your iPhone has to be unlocked since in this case
the Google Assistant app has to open) and speak whatever phrase you recorded,
in my case "Hey Google" then the Google Assistant app opens and starts
listening.
If you then ask something and get an answer you can continue to simply say "Hey
Google" or "OK Google" and because at that point the app is open it will listen
without you having to press anything.

Sieghard

I have the same issue wit Reminders. How can you select which Reminders list is
the default? If I use SIRI to create a reminder it usually puts it in the Alexa
Shopping list and not the Reminders or Family list.
The other day I thought I was smart and I said "SIRI, create a reminder in the
family list", then I waited thinking SIRI would ask me what I want to be
reminded about.
Instead SIRI said "Created "Family List" in your reminders and when I opened
the app and checked it had put an item "Family List" in the Alexa Shopping List.
It's so wonderful how smart SIRI is after 8 years.
As it was our anniversary a couple of days ago I was going to call our local
flower shop and get them to put something together for my wife. I couldn't
remember the name so I asked SIRI "Look for flower shops nearby". It started
listing flower sh ops in Terrace, a slightly larger town about 200 Km (125
miles) away. I then unlocked my phone, got SIRI to listen and said "Hey Google"
since I have the Google Assistant app installed and I set up that shortcut in
Settings > SIRI and Search. This opened the Google Assistant app and got it to
listen right away. I asked the exact same thing, "Look for flowershops nearby"
and it came back instantly with "Larkspur Flowers". I said "Call there" and
since the Assistant can't totally place a call instantly without approval like
SIRI, the phone app popped up with the number and after I tapped it the call
was placed.
Later I asked SIRI to "Call Larkspur Flowers" and it came back

Hi, list.

I wanted to remind everyone of the importance of cleaning the phone surface
from time to time.

I had a scary experience yesterday. After listening to a podcast in the native
app, something I have had some enjoyable experiences with for the first time
this weekend, I couldn’t make the phone respond correctly.

I couldn’t go to the next podcast I was interested in or close the app. I
couldn’t get to the home screen with my touch I. dD. or unlock the phone with
my pass code, which scared me for fear of erroring it too many times and wiping
out the phone. My swipes were not being responded to quickly or at all no
matter how firm I made them.

Well I tried some actions with Hey Siri hoping I could get somewhere, and had
trouble It misunderstood me and played a song II hadn’t requested, then thought
I was asking about Home Kit as sometimes it doesn’t understand my voice well,
and then opened Maps and started a route I didn’t need, and I couldn’t get it
stopped.

What I thought might have happened was that I had inadvertently activated Zoom,
which magnifys the screen, as the strange behavior seemed like what you get
when both that and VoiceOver are running.

So I needed to pay my cell bill as it was due yesterday and I had planned to do
so through the A. T. & T. app, but of course I couldn’t get there with the
phone not responding correctly, and I was home alone after church. I took a
cab to the nearby store and made my payment in person and had the phone looked
at. The representative cleaned it and everything was back to normal, he
canceled the mMaps route that had been speaking during the cab ride, and I was
able to close Podcasts. I was able to do thing normally on the phone after
that.

Subject: Importance of cleaning phone

I was able to do thing normally on the phone after
that.

Re: SIrI is stupid, was: iphone not creating calendar events

2019-03-04 Thread BB

Thanks to you, I finally got this working. The only issue I have now, is how
to get Voiceover to stop talking at the same time as the assistant. Is it
possible?

No, as I said in my original email:

I then unlocked my phone, got SIRI to listen and said "Hey Google" since I
have the Google Assistant app installed and I set up that shortcut in
Settings > SIRI and Search. This opened the Google Assistant app and got it
to listen right away.

If you then bring up SIRI (your iPhone has to be unlocked since in this case
the Google Assistant app has to open) and speak whatever phrase you
recorded, in my case "Hey Google" then the Google Assistant app opens and
starts listening.
If you then ask something and get an answer you can continue to simply say
"Hey Google" or "OK Google" and because at that point the app is open it
will listen without you having to press anything.

My husband and I both use the IPhone 8. He is running IOS 12.1.4 and I am
running the Beta 12.2 and neither of us got any suggestions when installing
the app. Are you saying you can activate Hey Google without opening the app?

Because I have checked every setting and Googled the issue with no luck.
Perhaps I misunderstood.
I also see no option to use Hey Google instead of OK Google.

I have the same issue wit Reminders. How can you select which Reminders list
is the default? If I use SIRI to create a reminder it usually puts it in the
Alexa Shopping list and not the Reminders or Family list.
The other day I thought I was smart and I said "SIRI, create a reminder in
the family list", then I waited thinking SIRI would ask me what I want to be
reminded about.
Instead SIRI said "Created "Family List" in your reminders and when I opened
the app and checked it had put an item "Family List" in the Alexa Shopping
List.

I then unlocked my phone, got SIRI to listen and said "Hey
Google" since I have the Google Assistant app installed and I set up that
shortcut in Settings > SIRI and Search. This opened the Google Assistant app
and got it to listen right away. I asked the exact same thing, "Look for
flowershops nearby" and it came back instantly with "Larkspur Flowers". I
said "Call there" and since the Assistant can't totally place a call
instantly without approval like SIRI, the phone app popped up with the
number and after I tapped it the call was placed.
Later I asked SIRI to "Call Larkspur Flowers" and it came back with "I found
one option, Shelley's Mountain Flower on Larkspur Lane in Avon". When I
asked my Google Home speaker to "Call Larkspur Flowers" it said "Calling
Larkspur Flowers" and it then rang and the call was placed correctly. Ah,
wouldn't it be nice if SIRI was half as smart as the Google Assistant?

2019-03-04 Thread Ed Worrell
Thanks for the kind words Mark. I to love this keyboard. There are no extra
cables to try and remember to take with you when you travel. The keyboard is
light, it simply connects to the iPad like a Smart Cover case. It is just a
beautiful piece of hardware. The typing experience is second to none, except
maybe my MacBook Pro with TouchBar.

I personally believe that the keyboard is worth the price.

Always keep your phone clean.

otherwise, it will get covered, with all kinds of grease, and crap!

But, i would expect, anyone who is conscious regarding their hygiene, to
already know this.

I was able to do thing normally on the phone after
that.

Sorry, Robert, that is not where you turn this off. Automatic switching to the
speakerphone is a Voiceover feature not a general accessibility feature hence
it is in Voiceover settings.

The call audio routing section says this:

Call audio routing determines where audio will be heard during a phone call or
Facetime Audio.

The options are Automatic (the default), Bluetooth headset or speaker.

You can also turn on auto answer here which if turned on lets you set a time in
seconds and if you turn this on and, for example, set it to 5 seconds then if a
phone call is received the call will be answered automatically after 5 seconds,
i.e. you don’t have to do a 2-finger double tap or tap on “Answer”.

The setting this person wants to turn off can be found in Settings > General >
Accessibility > Voiceover > Audio

It is called Auto select speaker in call, by default it is on.

The explanation underneath says “During audio calls automatically switch to the
speaker when not holding your iPhone to your ear.

Does your friend have a case on the phone? I used to have some issues with that
with my 6S Plus, but I also have an iPhone 8 and it never does this any more
unless I really hold it away from my ear. I wonder if her case somehow
interferes by covering or being too close to the area near the top of the phone
where the proximity sensor is located.

Sieghard

Hi Folks,

A friend of mine just got an iPhone 8 and is having the problem of the speaker
phone coming on at odd times whether she has taken the phone away from her head
or not. Also, when she tries to make it turn off it often won't do it. I had
this trouble with my iPhone 4S but have never had it on my 6S. In fact my
speaker phone never comes on unless I go and hit the button to turn it on. My
question is does anyone know if there is some setting which will turn off the
auto speaker phone feature? I couldn't find anything obvious in my phone yet
mine never comes on. She is very frustrated with this and wants to take her
phone back if she can't get it to stop. Thanks.

The setting this person wants to turn off can be found in Settings > General >

It is called Auto select speaker in call, by default it is on.

Ok, I still have a i4S, and do have this trouble with switching back and fro
between speaker and ear, which causes gaps in conversation to caller who misses
half of the conversation. I would like, and never yet heard of, a means to
switch that feature off so we can operate it like the old phones, we click a
button to put it on, or off, at will, our will that is!

Thanks, RobH.

Sorry, Robert, that is not where you turn this off. Automatic switching to the
speakerphone is a Voiceover feature not a general
accessibility feature hence it is in Voiceover settings.
The call audio routing section says this:
Call audio routing determines where audio will be heard during a phone call or
Facetime Audio.
The options are Automatic (the default), Bluetooth headset or speaker.
You can also turn on auto answer here which if turned on lets you set a time in
seconds and if you turn this on and, for example,
set it to 5 seconds then if a phone call is received the call will be answered
automatically after 5 seconds, i.e. you don’t have to
do a 2-finger double tap or tap on “Answer”.

I used to have some issues with that
with my 6S Plus, but I also have an iPhone 8 and it
never does this any more unless I really hold it away from my ear. I wonder if
her case somehow interferes by covering or being too
close to the area near the top of the phone where the proximity sensor is
located.

Sieghard

The feature you are speaking of is in
Settings/general/accessibility then swipe down to ‘call audio routing’.

Subject: Auto Speaker phone on iPhone 8

Hi Folks,

A friend of mine just got an iPhone 8 and is having the problem of the speaker
phone coming on at odd times whether she has taken
the phone away from her head or not. Also, when she tries to make it turn off
it often won't do it. I had this trouble with my
iPhone 4S but have never had it on my 6S. In fact my speaker phone never comes
on unless I go and hit the button to turn it on. My
question is does anyone know if there is some setting which will turn off the
auto speaker phone feature? I couldn't find anything
obvious in my phone yet mine never comes on. She is very frustrated with this
and wants to take her phone back if she can't get it
to stop. Thanks.

Karl

Ok, I still have a i4S, and do have this trouble with switching back and fro
between speaker and ear, which causes gaps in
conversation to caller who misses half of the conversation. I would like, and
never yet heard of, a means to switch that feature
off so we can operate it like the old phones, we click a button to put it on,
or off, at will, our will that is!

Thanks, RobH.
