I got my watch

2020-06-23 Thread Terri Stimmel

Hello everyone,

First of all, thank you to those of you who responded to my questions
about the Apple watch. I really appreciate the help and recommendations
that were offered.

Well, I got my watch. I received it yesterday. I got the 40 MM model.
It's the 5 gen. I really am enjoying figuring it out. I've been reading
stuff on Apple Vis, and listening to some podcasts. I've also just
messed with some stuff on my own, and have been doing some exploring.
I've still got a long way to go with it. But so far, I love it.

I do have a couple of questions though. I can probably find the answers
on my own.

However, I've been reading a lot.

First of all, how do I find out who is in my friends list?

From what I understand, it uses your first 12 favorites that are in
your iPhone. Although, I am pretty sure I don't have that many. I
thought that I just needed to press the button next to the crown.

However, I have pressed this button once, and then 2 times in a row. But
it never goes into a friends list. When I press it 2 times quickly, it
tells me that I can add a card for Apple pay.

What am I doing wrong?

Or is this different with the 5th gen?

I know that some people state that the content on Apple Vis is out of
date. Maybe so. I can't say for sure, because I don't know enough about
the Apple watch.

Also, sometimes when I am replying to a text, when I am done dictating,
I somehow end up out of the messaging App. This has happened a couple of
times. So it seems then that I then have to dictate the message again?

Why is this? And why might this sometimes happen.

Also, is there a way to increase the length of the time the watch stays
awake?

And last question.

Can I possibly change the ring tone, and the message tone? Or the voices
that are used?

Any help is very much appreciated. I hope to enjoy my watch for a rather
long time.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: putting audiobook from CD onto my phone

2020-06-23 Thread DJ
Hi there,
You could use a cd ripping program for windows to rip the audio to MP3
files. Then, make sure that the meta-data is correct for each audio file.
Place them into a folder in dropbox or other online storage tool of your
choice, then you will be able to freely access them the way you want.

Re: Lightning alert

2020-06-23 Thread Jewel
At least, one has the comfort of knowing if one hears the thunder, that one can
be confident that,
unless he/she is one of the microscopic number of lightning-proof people,
he/she hasn't been struck.
I heard of a guy who took shelter in a shed that stood in his horse's paddock
. He heard, what
sounded like an explosion, and when he poked his head out of the shed, there
was a scorched patch
on the ground, and, nearby, the blackened corpse of the animal.
Shod horses are, particularly, vulnerable to lightning strikes because of
their iron footwear.

the lightneing is

I agree with Simon that being alerted when lightning has struck: a little late
for that, but I
disagree with him that being struck by lightning will put both you and your
phone out of order
because there are many recorded instances of unfortunate and, obviously,
attractive people who have
been lightning-struck, not only once but several-many times who have lived to

I did that, and it was on, so I turned it off, then back on. No change. Thanks.
I also thought you could increase Vibration, but I saw no choice there. Thanks.

The public beta is not out yet.

Someone on this list has gotten invites privately and cannot share that link.

Another list posted a link to beta profiles for developers that I guess someone
has made available but that is a violation of Apple’s Non Disclosure Agreement,
so I deleted that email.

Usually it is the month after the WWDC before the public betas are available.

You could try going to https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/

And see if you can sign up.

>From Blind Bargains today:

#WWDC: VoiceOver Gains New Image Description Capabilities among other Changes
J.J. Meddaugh Jun 22, 2020 7:25 PM ET

Like just about everything else these days, Apple's worldwide developers
conference has switched to a virtual format for 2020. But a variety of new
features have been announced across Apple's line of devices, including some new
VoiceOver improvements.
While few details have been shared, VoiceOver appears to be gaining several
features to help navigate apps and web pages which may be lacking proper
accessibility support. Apple will try to identify controls that are not
properly labeled, and also provide more verbose descriptions for images,
including images on websites.
Outside of VoiceOver, Siri claims to be able to answer more questions with
direct answers, instead of the classic "I can search the web for that"
response. You can also send audio messages directly from Siri, or send your ETA
to someone.
Apple grabs one of Android's top features in on-device dictation, useful on an
airplane or another location where Internet access may be spotty. Speaking of
Android features, iOS is gaining new ways to organize apps, and enhanced
support for app widgets.
In messages, you can now pin up to nine conversations to the top of the screen
for easy access. And the most important feature of all, a new face covering
option for your Memoji.
There of course is a lot more than this. You can watch the keynote or [view a
near-complete list of new features from
Apple..'(https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-14-preview/features/) Here are the
specific features listed under the accessibility heading:

VoiceOver Recognition
On-device intelligence recognizes key elements displayed on your screen to add
VoiceOver support for app and web experiences that don t have accessibility
support built in.

VoiceOver Recognition: Image descriptions
VoiceOver reads complete-sentence descriptions of images and photos within apps
and on the web.

VoiceOver Recognition: Text recognition
VoiceOver speaks the text it identifies within images and photos.

VoiceOver Recognition: Screen recognition
VoiceOver automatically detects interface controls to aid in navigating your
apps, making them more accessible.

Headphone Accommodations
This new accessibility feature is designed to amplify soft sounds and adjust
certain frequencies for an individual s hearing, to help music, movies, phone
calls, and podcasts sound more crisp and clear. Headphone Accommodations also
supports Transparency mode on AirPods Pro, making quiet voices more audible and
tuning the sounds of your environment to your hearing needs.

How to Route Phone Calls to Bluetooth Speaker?

2020-06-23 Thread dani pagador
Hi, Everyone.
I have a Bose Soundlink Micro speaker and want to be able to use it
for phone calls. How do I get the call to go through the Bluetooth
speaker as opposed to the iPhone speaker? I've looked at the Call
Audio Routing and only see an option to route to a Bluetooth headset.

My husband says there's a pop-up screen that lets you select where you
want to route a call to after the call has been made. Does anyone know
what I need to do to be able to access that screen?

Thanks,
Dani

Even if the Statesman's app is inaccessible, you can still access the content
from the NFB Newsline app, or however you access Newsline content. It should
also be on BookShare since they have a partnership with Newsline.

2020-06-23 Thread Carolyn
Subject says it all. My phone does not vibrate on ring.

I have gone into Settings, into Sounds and Haptics, says
Vibrate is on. I went to General to see if I could find
anything about it. I went to
Accessibility. So, I am missing something somewhere. Could
someone please tell me where to go to get my vibrations set?
Thanks.

According to what I read, if you choose to enact this library functionality,
Apple will put your apps into folders where it thinks they belong. Now I
suppose you could go in and change that. But I would just to soon do it myself
to start with, rather than having Apple do it for me.

According to the preview link on Apple's page, Watch OS 7 will work on Series
3,4 and 5, with at least an iPhone 6S or later.
Here is the link for the full details:

RE: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-23 Thread Richard Turner
The public beta is not out yet.
Someone on this list has gotten invites privately and cannot share that link.
Another list posted a link to beta profiles for developers that I guess someone
has made available but that is a violation of Apple’s Non Disclosure Agreement,
so I deleted that email.
Usually it is the month after the WWDC before the public betas are available.

You could try going to https://beta.apple.com/sp/betaprogram/
And see if you can sign up.

#WWDC: VoiceOver Gains New Image Description Capabilities among other Changes

You can watch the
keynote
or [view a near-complete list of new features from
Apple..'(https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-14-preview/features/)
Here are the specific features listed under the accessibility heading:

Re: Lightning alert

2020-06-23 Thread Gadget Girl
Hi. I listened to a podcast that was reviewed on AppleVis years ago and got the
app, Weather Radio. It has a paid Lightening Alert which was (and still is)
$4.99 USD. You renew it every year. Although sometimes I miss the date, it
still gives me alerts. It gives lightening at approx. 4 miles out and is very
accurate in my case. i've been using it a very long time… Years; and have
never been struct!

Best regards,
Anita

I didn’t read anything that said they would force you to organize your apps in
a particular way. It seems like Apple is giving you more options on how to
organize your apps and manage your home pages and not taking options away from
people.

I’m concerned over what they are proposing for app organization: I want to
organize my apps the way I think they should be organized, rather than how they
think they should be. I skip page one with the widgets, meaning the rest of my
apps are on three pages, arranged in folders, with the apps in each being in

putting audiobook from CD onto my phone

2020-06-23 Thread R Van Lant
I have an audiobook of prayers and poems that is currently on audio CD. To
make it easier to use and move around the various sections, I was thinking I'd
like to put it on my phone. I'm experienced at moving MP3 files and such onto
my phone from my laptop via dropbox, but I'd appreciate some advice on how to
start from an audiobook CD. The last time I tried this, my laptop wanted to
start playing the book when I put it in the drive, and I wasn't sure how to
copy the files into a format that could go to the phone. Would someone kindly
give me some guidance on the best approach to do this? If you've done
something similar, is it likely that each poem or prayer will have it's own
file so I can navigate them on my phone the way I would have navigated them
with tracks on a CD player? If not, maybe it's better for me to re-buy it in
a digital format, if that is now available.

2020-06-23 Thread Wayne Merritt
Larry,
Even if the Statesman's app is inaccessible, you can still access the
content from the NFB Newsline app, or however you access Newsline
content. It should also be on BookShare since they have a partnership
with Newsline.

Good luck,

RE: Lightning alert

2020-06-23 Thread Steve Sweeney
Hi,
Yea, I have a friend here in Florida who has been struck 5 times. He is like a
lightening magnet! When a thunder storm is near, he does not stay near us if
we are outside.
Lightening here is a real problem that we all take seriously. That is why it
is so important to be able to get any kind of warning if there is a lightening
strike anywhere within say 30 miles or so. These storms can move 40 to 50 MPH
so it does not take long till it is on us. Our public schools are told that if
there is one lightening flash within 30 miles, they must hold the students
inside for an additional 30 minutes till they can be dismissed or go outside.
We need apps that will give us any advanced warning.

Yeah but those that have been hit and survived are a lot less than those who
have been hit and not survived.

Some guy in the states had seemingly been hit 7 times

And if a storm is rolling in from somewhere and you can hear the thunder then
the lightneing is going to be on you quicker than you can move.

Remember that lightening is the fastest thing we have on earth Being light and
electricity The noise is the sound barrier being broken

I agree with Simon that being alerted when lightning has struck: a little late
for that, but I disagree with him that being struck by lightning will put both
you and your phone out of order because there are many recorded instances of
unfortunate and, obviously, attractive people who have been lightning-struck,
not only once but several-many times who have lived to bore their friends with
the tale of their, miraculous, experience.

If it's struck then it's not an issue

Mary,

I'd be very surprised if iOS 14 corrects the native Mail app focus issue if
they were unable to correct it through the multiple iterations of iOS 13.
Fortunately, Outlook for iOS is working great for me and doesn't have the
focus issue so I'm done with the native Mail app.

In all the coverage of the online event today, I have seen absolutely
nothing about anything new for Accessibility, voiceover or otherwise. Thats
not unusual. But sometimes they show stuff on the slides that they dont
announce. I havent seen anything about Accessibility and any of the tech
articles I have read. I wonder if anybody saw this with a sighted person,
and if anyone knows of anything publicly shown at the event regarding
voiceover accessibility. I can certainly think of some things. Fix the focus
bug and email would be my number one, and thats not a new problem.

The vast majority of them work for all keyboards.
My Logitech keyboard doesn't work with the ones that use the FN key, but all
the rest work fine.
I put together a list which I may need to add one or two keystrokes to that I
put on my web site.
I have one version in tables and in Excel that has the action, keyboard
command, and gesture in three columns.
I also have a stand-alone document for each.

RE: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-23 Thread Richard Turner
>From Blind Bargains today:
#WWDC: VoiceOver Gains New Image Description Capabilities among other Changes
J.J. Meddaugh Jun 22, 2020
7:25 PM ET

You can watch the
keynote or [view a near-complete
list of new features from
Apple..'(https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-14-preview/features/) Here are the
specific features listed under the accessibility heading:

I didn’t read anything that said they would force you to organize your apps in
a particular way. It seems like Apple is giving you more options on how to
organize your apps and manage your home pages and not taking options away from

I’m concerned over what they are proposing for app organization: I want to
organize my apps the way I think they should be organized, rather than how they
think they should be. I skip page one with the widgets, meaning the rest of my
apps are on three pages, arranged in folders, with the apps in each being in
alphabetical order.

Greetings. I found an Apple Support page with VoiceOver commands for the Magic
Bluetooth Keyboard. Though the page says it is for this specific keyboard,
would these same commands work for other Bluetooth keyboards? I'm trying to
find a quick reference for one of my students. For what it's worth, here is the

2020-06-23 Thread chaltain
I didn’t read anything that said they would force you to organize your apps in
a particular way. It seems like Apple is giving you more options on how to
organize your apps and manage your home pages and not taking options away from
people.

I’m concerned over what they are proposing for app organization: I want to
organize my apps the way I think they should be organized, rather than how they
think they should be. I skip page one with the widgets, meaning the rest of my
apps are on three pages, arranged in folders, with the apps in each being in
alphabetical order.

Re: Braille characters on a Braille display

2020-06-23 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi

Yep it's Unicode. It speaks the characters as in the dot numbers but
it doesn't Braille anything at all. It's a shame that you can't have
Braille displayed visually whilst getting it displayed on a display at
the same time.

Cheers,
Ben.

Re: How to calm a dog during thunder storms, was RE: Lightning alert

2020-06-23 Thread Bill Gallik

- Sent from Bill's iPhone 6 (iOS 12.4.7) via Google Mail
I’ve had two dog guides, both from Leader, and they did originally show some
anxiety durring thunder storms. In fact, my first dog and I got caught in a
fast moving thunderstorm on one of our very first walks in Wheaton. I had
decided to go to the neighborhood Convenient store about three blocks from
home.. We were almost there when thunder and rain showers started. I sat him
down gently and put my arm around his neck and scratched his ears while softly
assuring him we were OK. He settled down and never had an issue with thunder
again. But then, I suppose that my temperament of thoroughly enjoying thunder
storms was readily sensed by Jake.

Holland, my second dog, never quite completely got over the thunderstorm
anxiety syndrome, although it did diminish significantly after several such
storms and my reaction. But, I had brought Jake home in April whereupon we had
an opportunity to experience a thunderstorm immediately. Holland came home (to
Superior) in mid October whence thunderstorms are very rare affairs in northern
Wisconsin. So, Holland was with me at least seven months before thunderstorms
would occur. I do believe that was a bit too much an upheaval of his calm
wintry environment. Still, he was a trooper and carried on with his duties.

No to 6s case. Re: Availability of iPhone SE2020 cases?

2020-06-23 Thread Dave
Hi, Yes, the 6s cases, will fit the new iPhone SE2020. But that is only in
size alone.

But the cutout for the camera, will be out of line.

You need a case that says, for the new SE2020, and the iPhone 8. and i think
for the iPhone 7.

The 6s cases, will only be OK, for the iPhone 6.

Dave.

Even my iPhone 6S case fit my new SE. I was rather surprised, as I didn't
realize that the 6S was the same size, but it is.

In preparing myself for when Telcel (my carrier) restocks the iPHones SE 2nd
Generation, my sister (who got herself an SE2020 last month), has been
looking online to get herself and me, a case; however she says that cases
for iPHones SE2020 aren’t available yet here in Mexico! So between an iPHone
7 or 8 case, which would be the nearest in terms of camera and other
controls, that would fit a new sE? Thanks for info.

RE: New for voiceover and iOS 14 and Mac operating system big sur

2020-06-23 Thread chaltain
Wow, with an app launcher, being able to place widgets on any screen
whatsoever, and being able to set my default web browser and email client I’ll
get some of the things I mis most from Android. I’d think adding captions to
pictures would also be a useful feature for us blind users. I also like some of
the new features being added for the Airpod Pros.
