I actually did the same thing until lyft offered the edit box for that
purpose.

I use lyft, not Uber, but they do have a text box where you can leave a note
for the driver. I usually say something like, "Blue jacket, white cane".
In most cases the driver does read the note and I have found them to be very
responsive.

If you tap on that, At the top of the page there is a heading "Ask Siri".
Under that is Listen For Hey Siri".
I have mine set to off. you probably want yours on.
