App tells me to Swipe Up Or Down?

Hi folks. In an app, I hear swipe up or down to change environment when I touch a certain spot on the screen. However, since Voiceover uses swipe up/down for other things, how do I perform this gesture? What's the VO alternative for swipe up/down? thanks for any suggestions, Chris P.S.
