I hope they sort out the issues with self driving cars etc by the time the
technology gets to new Zealand,

Our roads in a lot of cases are crap and I don't see autonomous vehicals
working well until they sort that out here.

As for 5g,
I don't even think they've started putting it in yet,
Providers are still in the testing phases

I think it will be some time before 5G coverage is complete, I am sure years
down the road it will be very complete since it's crutial to things like
self-driving cars and so on.
As for Mark's hope that this year's iPhone 12 include some sort of fingerprint
authentication in addition to Face Id I highly doubt this will be the case.
My wife and I both have an iPhone 8 and we'll stick with it for at least one
more year, I don't think this year's phones are going to be that convincing
with their first generation 5G support and smaller batteries.

drove me crazy because it kept saying something like "triangle or

My primary device is my beloved iPhone 8 Plus. The 8 Plus has been on

of the phone. So, I am not going to install iOS14 on my 8 Plus until
after hearing from various people on this list, that doing so will not
cause my 8 Plus to slow down. I am also not going to install 14 on my
8 Plus because I am planning on purchasing an iPhone 12 when it is

suspect that it will. If the iPhone 12 does not include a Touch ID
sensor, then I will try to hold out for another year in hopes that
Apple will bring the hardware feature back on a later model.

4.
Finally, my beloved Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus has an in-display Touch ID

implemented the new Touch ID on its latest releases of iPAds, all bets
are off. Just have to wait and see.

5.
I would like to host another Zoom group discussion this Sunday so we

Hi Les,
Well, from what I have heard, for somebody in your situation in a more rural
area, 5G is a loser specially if you’re on Verizon. From what I’ve read, it
sounds like the best 5G rural area coverage is T-Mobile. They don’t use
millimeterwave. That’s the really fast stuff. But it also doesn’t go anywhere
and isn’t available anywhere except for major metro areas. So I wonder if
getting a new phone with a better modem and it would solve your problem. What
phone do you have now? Seven or an eight? Can’t remember. Good luck in any case.

Hi Les,
Well, if the + type SE actually comes out, I think that would be extremely
tempting. I do not care about 5G. I really don’t at this point. I think it’s a
lot of hype. And I get decent LTE out here on T-Mobile. I am right around 100
Mbps download. I’ll take that.

2020-09-18 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Les,
Well, from what I have heard, for somebody in your situation in a more rural
area, 5G is a loser specially if you’re on Verizon. From what I’ve read, it
sounds like the best 5G rural area coverage is T-Mobile. They don’t use
millimeterwave. That’s the really fast stuff. But it also doesn’t go anywhere
and isn’t available anywhere except for major metro areas. So I wonder if
getting a new phone with a better modem and it would solve your problem. What
phone do you have now? Seven or an eight? Can’t remember. Good luck in any case.

As Mary said, it is mostly the few new gestures.
I cover those in the handout I put together on VoiceOver gestures, freely

2020-09-18 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Mary,

Well, the problem here is that we moved a little over a year ago. I am now
living in a more rural area. Connection problems have persisted since I moved.
Therefore, for me, assuming they bring 5G to my area, I think it would help
with connection issues that I’m having. I have lots of dropouts when they
really shouldn’t happen. This was related to my use of the my eyes. Anyway, I
will investigate all options as soon as I know what they are. Thanks for the
assist.

Hi Les,
Well, if the + type SE actually comes out, I think that would be extremely
tempting. I do not care about 5G. I really don’t at this point. I think it’s a
lot of hype. And I get decent LTE out here on T-Mobile. I am right around 100
Mbps download. I’ll take that.

Hi Les,
I’m not Mark, but yes. If you get an iPhone 12, you will be dealing with face
ID. You could always decide to get an SE 2020. Or if that rumored SE plus comes
out, you would have the same form factor as an 8+, with a better battery, and
presumably a home button. Ased for a book, I’m not sure what to recommend. The
biggest thing is the gestures, because there’s no home button. And you don’t
really need a whole book for that. Maybe it’s even describe somewhere on
AppleVis.

You can use a passcode on all of them. And yes, the SC has the home button and
the touch ID.

 Hello Family,

I installed iPad OS 14 on my 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 tablet.

Several of the new features of iPad OS 14 are not available on this model.
However, the VoiceOver Scene Description feature is available, albeit a
scaled-down version, and was set to on, by default. This feature drove me
crazy because it kept saying something like "triangle or diagonal" almost
all the time when viewing items in a list. It took me what seemed like
forever to find where this feature was located in the OS. I found the
setting under VoiceOver Verbosity. I turned the feature to off but doing
 so
did not disable the feature until after a restart of the device.

I installed iOS14 on an iPhone 11. Strangely enough, all of the scene
descriptions were set to off, by default.

 3.
My primary device is my beloved iPhone 8 Plus. The 8 Plus has been on the
market for quite a while and, as happens to all devices, sooner or later,
installing the latest OS begins to slow down the responsiveness of the
phone. So, I am not going to install iOS14 on my 8 Plus until after
 hearing
from various people on this list, that doing so will not cause my 8 Plus to
slow down. I am also not going to install 14 on my 8 Plus because I am
planning on purchasing an iPhone 12 when it is released; assuming that it
ships with a Touch ID sensor, as I strongly suspect that it will. If the
iPhone 12 does not include a Touch ID sensor, then I will try to hold out
for another year in hopes that Apple will bring the hardware feature back
 on
 a later model.

 4.
Finally, my beloved Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus has an in-display Touch ID
sensor / Home button. I am hoping that Apple will include the same or
similar feature on iPhone 12. However, given the way that they have
implemented the new Touch ID on its latest releases of iPAds, all bets are
off. Just have to wait and see.

 5.
I would like to host another Zoom group discussion this Sunday so we can
talk about all of the new Apple software and hardware features and devices.
If I can manage it, I will send out a notice early Sunday morning.

I hope you are all doing well.

2020-09-18 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Mary,

It’s nice to hear from you. I hope you are doing well. Yes, that’s what I
suspected. I’ll have to make a decision but I’d like to get a phone with 5G
capability. We shall see when the time comes. The SC is tempting, I must say.
I’ve heard so many good things about that phone, I am tempted to get one of
those.

Hi Les,
I’m not Mark, but yes.
Maybe it’s even describe somewhere on
AppleVis.
