RE: Exercise bikes

2020-07-31 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I know that some bikes be they accessible or not have built in heart rate
monitors in sections of the handle bars,

I think these bikes though are more likely not accessible to you

Your best bet would be to contact a company that sells exercise bikes and would
be able to give you more information on what the different bikes can do.

I use my apple watch and also a Bluetooth heart rate monitor which goes around
my chest,

The watch keeps track of hr and movements within the apple ios system,

but the TKIP hr monitor talks to an app from wahoo which is on my iphone
using Bluetooth
the app also can talk to any other apps you have for picking up data from your
cycle.

As I say it's best to talk to the sellers and find out what the bikes can do
and therefore if they will suit what you are wanting to do.

Good luck.

Simon, do you know about the accessibility part of it? Idealy if it were
possible, in an app it would be really great if I could keep track of my heart
rate, keeping track of the number of miles and anything else that I can't
remember now that my friend and I use to keep track of when we rode the
exercise bikes in an apartment building where I lived about 7 years ago.
I think the other item we kept track of was the speed. Anyway for some
individuals the distance in miles may not be important, but to my friend and I
it was interesting to keep track of as well as the other details.

If you have lots of money to spend,

There is a range of cycle machines that utilise real bikes and also use iPads
to allow the riders to cycle virtually with each other through the app on the
ipad,

They have just done this with the Tour de France this year due to covid,

Very very coold systems but not cheap.

Caveats of levels of accessibility apply and all that.
Like anything, just depends on how much you want to spend.
I've got a Nautilus treadmill which has an iOS app. The app is completely VO
accessible, but it's only for reviewing workout stats. They also make a line of
exercise bikes which I'm sure has a similar app set up. If you're looking for
something where you can control or choose a program from within the app, that,
I'm not aware of. If there is a bike like that out there, I'd be interested in

I've seen them here in NZ for around the 2 grand mark but that was a higher end

It really does depend on what it is you are trying to do.

The other thing is you can use a standard bicycle on a cycle erg, So you can
get them so you sit the back wheel on the roller and the wheel is locked in to
place and use the gearing on the bike to change your resistance levels, And
there are some which have resistance on the roller as well.

Or you can get the ergs that you take the front wheel off and lock the forks
on to a bracket that holds the front in place while again the back wheel sits
on a roller and spins as you pedal.

But yes if you have an apple watch it can give you HR and time etc measurements
But you can also get caidence / speed computers that cost very little but have
to be put on the bikes to measue what speed and distances you are cycling.

I have my own road bike on a cycle erg that the back wheel locks in to and I
use gears for resistance, I have my apple watch to measure some things and a
caidance meter to measure speed and RPM from the back wheel, these are fed
into an app on my phone which is from a company called wahoo, and that also
talks to my HR monitor which is again a wahoo device and gives a better reading
than the watch does,

it really depends on what you wantto spend or do as to what it costs you.

When I cycle I take it pretty seriously, but that's just because it's something

It's not exactly a bike, but the Cubii is a sitting elliptical. you do not
sit on it, but you place it in front of a chair that you are sitting in. it
has 9 resistance levels, and the basic model that sells for $199 has no
connectivity, but for $50 more, there is a model that has bluetooth and will
pair with an iPhone. The companion app is accessible with voiceover and can
give you a wealth of info about your workout.

I want to thank all of you for your responses. I have been researching bikes
and the prices and features are all over the place.

I really like the idea of getting a bike just so that I can work out rather
than worrying about connectivity. I have also seen that some of them require
additional apps with monthly fees and I'm not interested in paying more
especially for a feature that may or may not work.

I have some chronic lower back pain and my doctor is recommending that I use
a recumbent bike to build up the core muscles in the lower back while also
providing some support while riding.

Again thanks for all of your suggestions.

Hi,
please do yourself A favor and research before purchasing an indoor cycle
that comes equipped with a computer as some of these computers are not
accurate.
I have a indoor cycle that is comparable to the spin bikes that you find at
the gym. honestly, all you need is a rpm/cadence sensor and you are good to
go in terms of getting a good workout. An Apple Watch will help you track
other metrics if that is what you're into. if you have an indoor cycle with
a rpm/cadence sensor as an add-on, you can follow along with spin class
instructors that are giving you information like spin at 80% or hundred
percent etc.
For something like this, you probably won't spend over $700 with a decent
indoor cycle and sensor.

We bought a spin bike last fall and decided to get just a basic model without
any connectivity because both my wife and I have Apple Watches which we use
with the indoor cycle workout to track time, heart rate and calories.
Yes, some bikes keep track of a virtual distance, but who really cares if the
bike says you biked 6 miles or 10 miles, I am after a good workout and for that
my heart rate and calories burned are more important. I don't know how much you
want to spend, but you are better off investing in a good quality bike without
a fancy controller which may or may not give you what you want, if anything
spend that money on an Apple Watch which you can use for any type of workout
not just your bike.

Re: Exercise bikes

2020-07-28 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
I was looking for an exercise cycle some time ago. I did not want gimmicks I
could or would not use.

The model I have had for over two years now is:

JLL® IC300 Indoor Exercise Bike...
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06X9CPTNH?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I use this in conjunction with my Apple Watch to set myself goals and monitor
my achievements.

I’ve lost close to four Stone and dramatically decreased my blood pressure.

Unfortunately my training has been interrupted by my being hospitalised where I
was diagnosed with an atrial flutter, a kidney infection and sepsis. My kidney
is deformed and is due to be removed. Unfortunately, I have recently been
found to have MRSA and as soon as it is cleared hopefully my defective
non-functioning kidney can be removed. I will no longer need my nephrostomy
and training can resume.

I have some chronic lower back pain and my doctor is recommending that I use a
recumbent bike to build up the core muscles in the lower back while also
providing some support while riding.

Again thanks for all of your suggestions.

RE: Exercise bikes

2020-07-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And if you are looking for a consumer grade bike which supports Gym Kit,
Apple's developer kit or interface for such things then good luck, I did not
find one under $10,000 which means it's really designed for professional gyms.

2020-07-28 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I can't give you exact names / models but yes there are now quite a few
products out there that are iPhone / IOs or android compatible

Your best bet would be to find a store or stockest of exercise equipment and go
in to have an actual look at the products to find one that suited you both in
what you are doing and how it feels when you are on it working out.

The last thing you want to do is purchase a product on line and find it wont
feel good for you while your on it.

Comfort during exercise is important especially when cycling,
You don't want to get a sore butt.
I personally use my road bike on a cycle erg that the back wheel should sit and
it helps set the resistance and still allows for using the gearing on the bike.

Good luck I hope you find something.

I'd think you can strap a fitBit device to the bike, and then use phone to
gather or collate the data.

Hi,

Does anyone know of an exercise bike that will interface with an
Iphone? How accessible is the interface if there is such a thing? Will
it present current exercise data and maintain past history of workouts?

Thanks.

RE: accessible exercise bikes using an Iphone?

2017-01-09 Thread Richard Turner
There are higher end exercise bikes that have Bluetooth connectivity to
iPhones. How accessible the app is I don't know. I'd call around to some
stores that sell exercise equipment and find out which ones have Bluetooth and
see if you couldn't install the app and go to the store and test it out with
one of their floor models.

Of course, someone on this list may have one and will chime in.
