Finding my Puppy!
Hallo to the Viphone Community, Seeing as many of us will have Guide dogs, I was wondering if anyone has found a good app which will allow them to find their dog in open spaces? I have a new, non professional, puppy. We also have a largish plot of land, about an acre, with lots of bushes and trees etc. I have put a little bell on his collar, but often don't know where he has gone. He is still very young and so doesn't know to come to me when called. I have been looking at various apps that work alonside a device, to help find him, but most of them are geared to GPS and a map for location. I am looking for something that will allow me to point my phone in a sort of scanning mode to help me locate him by, say, buzzing, when I am pointing in the right direction and, perhaps, indicating the distance? Is anyone using such an app and, if so, what is it and what Bluetooth/GPS device are you using? Thanks in advance from me and puppy Lupin! Re: Finding my Puppy!
Sandra, I don't have an app idea, but I would humbly like to make a few suggestions. I would suggest that you not have your new pup off-leash when you go outside until he has learned the recall command. Really, not at all in an open area is it good to let your pup run free unless (1) He is cirm on the recall command, or (2) Someone able to see him is with you. You could get a Flexi-leash or one of those clothesline type chords designed as a leash. I have raisow my own dog and this is what I did until she learned that command. Please consider what I'm saying. Hopefully this will work for you! Thanks! Re: Finding my Puppy!
Hi Sharonda, Thanks for taking the time to respond. I should say that my land is pretty well inclosed and fenced. lupin is 5 and a half months old and has been with us for 6 weeks and does know when he is being called, but with all those distractions, twigs/stones and pussy-cats, he is often forgetful. I have always had dogs, mainly, guide dogs, who were, de facto, trained before they came to me, so this is a new departure for me, though, I am no new dog handler. I do find, and this is true of working with a trained dog as well, that knowing the direction of the dog helps, immensely, when recalling one's dog. Thus, I am looking for an app and I do seem to remember that such a one exists. By the way, I do already have a retractable leash, but have found it problematical as Lupin is great at Macrame! He can knit his way around the trees etc and we then have a great time untangling him! Thanks again from me and from him! Re: Finding my Puppy!
The most you need is a remote controlled sound device so you press a button, not an iDevice thing, just an IR or radio transmitter so that it makes the receiver on the dog, beep or something, and just listen for it. If he's gone too far for that, you're in trouble anyway. Even battery-powered door bells would do this. A smallish one if it's a puppy! There are keychain finders which do the same and are smaller to go on a key chain. Something to press and something else to make a noise to centre in on. Training to a dog whistle could have mileage too; certainly better than calling into the great beyond if he's already behind You! - Original Message - From: 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone viphone@googlegroups.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, July 03, 2015 11:04 AM Subject: Re: Finding my Puppy!
