Hi,

Marie makes some good points.

I have some amazon Echoes and Sonos speakers but I also toy with the idea of
getting a home Pod mini but for perhaps different reasons than have been cited
thus far. I'm drawn to it as a means of having a hub for any home kit enabled
devices I might have now or in future such as video doorbells, thermostats and
garage door openers. Having a Home pod mini in use as a hub for such allows the
user to access them when not on one's own home network. Of course this can also
be done with an iPad too but one always has to be sure it's powered up and
online. I just wanted to mention this as another facet of the decision making
process as I'd not seen others mention it thus far.

Take good care.

Robin

FYI I have set up Amazon, Google and Sonos speakers with no sighted assistance

Any Amazon Alexa speaker has one big advantage for Audible subscribers in that
you can simply ask it to play any of your Audible books directly since Amazon

No one has yet mentioned the google home that I have. My mom bought me one as
a gift a few years ago. I subscribe to youtube music which used to be google
play music until google did away with it recently.
I enjoy using my google home for not only listening to music, but for asking
questions about how to spell words playing a few games and asking it to give me
recipes. I can also listen to bard books or audible books from my iPhone if I
connect to my iPhone via bluetooth.
The sound is pretty good. I might get me an echo soon because I hear that that
device might be able to read bookshare books soon. It is great to have many
choices when it comes to smart speakers. I won't get any kind of home pod
because I've got all the music I want from youtube music and I really don't
like apple music all that much. They don't have as much classic country and
bluegrass as google does. I've got around 400 gigs worth of music of my own
and I have no idea how I'd get that music on to Itunes. I wouldn't need to get
the music on my iPhone.

If you have any of the newer Sonos speakers you have a "Connect To" option in
the Audible app and it will show you any of your Sonos devices you can play to.

Actualy, having audio books go through the Sonos system is possible. Simply
start them on the IPhone and then in Control Panel, send them to the Sonos

with Audible if you are subscribed to that servvice.

2020-10-19 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
The nice thing about the google home, is I don't have to send audio
books to my device. Once I connected my google home to my iPhone via
bluetooth, I just say hey google, connect and it responds looking for
paired devices. It connects to my iPhone and lets me know that. I
can just go to the audible or bard app and begin to listen to any
audio book I want with no issues. When I'm done, I just say hey
google, disconnect and it does it. Very easy.

I too have a Google HomePod which was given to me as a gift and I thoroughly
enjoy it. I too use YouTube music premium for its source. It does have a lot of
music.i used to use Apple Music until I got the speaker and then I dropped
Apple Music and I find YouTube music easier to use when I really want to look
for something.

2020-10-19 Thread Marie N.
Actualy, having audio books go through the Sonos system is possible. Simply
start them on the IPhone and then in Control Panel, send them to the Sonos
system. Give it a try. And if you own the Sonos One, just ask it to read a book
with Audible if you are subscribed to that servvice.

2020-10-19 Thread Marie N.
I do use my ITunes music primarily but also have access to Amazon Prime music.
In addition I can do most things now done on the phone through the Home Pod
mini. (When they become available, of course!) So I could replace the Amazon
devices totally and since I find their app less than ideal, I would be content
with that. Perhaps I might retain one Dot in a strategic location as a backup
for any questions to which Siri may not give an appropriate response.
Plus I have one Sonos speaker which is Alexa enabled. And yes the Sonos does
have remarkable sound.

Hi Richard,

Setting up sonos is as easy as standing on your head while drinking a beer,

The app is very friendly and the prompts are easy to follow,

And I play my apple music through them and my own music library from a home
based machine.

And yeah the sound quality is great,
Shame about the pricing but that’s what you get for quality products.

Re: Home Pod Mini

2020-10-19 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,

Marie makes some good points.

I have some amazon Echoes and Sonos speakers but I also toy with the
idea of getting a home Pod mini but for perhaps different reasons than
have been cited thus far. I'm drawn to it as a means of having a hub for
any home kit enabled devices I might have now or in future such as video
doorbells, thermostats and garage door openers. Having a Home pod mini
in use as a hub for such allows the user to access them when not on
one's own home network. Of course this can also be done with an iPad too
but one always has to be sure it's powered up and online. I just wanted
to mention this as another facet of the decision making process as I'd
not seen others mention it thus far.

Take good care.

Robin

RE: Home Pod Mini

2020-10-19 Thread Richard Turner
Did someone say we couldn’t do this?
Those devices are all quite blind user friendly.
I have not heard the Sonos speakers but I understand they have great sound,
which comes at a pretty high price point, but may very well be worth the cost.
If your primary music source is your iTunes library, then it makes sense to me
to go with an Apple product for ease of use and compatibility.
But, I have not delved into the Smart Speaker world myself.

The main thing I love about the Sonos and/or the Home pods is the ability to
send whatever I am playing to all the speakers in my home. Since I live alone I
can move to another room and still hear my music, or a football game or radio
station. I have a bit over 1800 square feet to roam and prefer not having to
carry a device around whenever I wander. This way I can concentrate on my
navigation. LOL!
FYI I have set up Amazon, Google and Sonos speakers with no sighted assistance
with very little or no trouble and know there will be no problem with the Home
pods I plan to try when available. So it is nonsense to say we can’t do this.

Re: Home Pod Mini

2020-10-19 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I had a different cheaper common variation.
I do not subscribe to any of the paid services. I can stream music throughit,
but find it more use answering questions, quite
good at maths, reasonable at spelling and basic definitions, though can also
be very obtuse when in a mood.
There are podcasts out there for it, it does streamed radio of course, has
timer features one can sometimes connect to activities,
like put radio on at a time, or off after a time, things like that.
I get my penneth out of mine. Home Pod pricing could make it a moot point.

RobH, glad to contribute something for a change.

2020-10-18 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Chris,

I woun’t go for a Home Pod or Mini personally,

I’d look at the Sonos range

But if you don’t want to stream music from a service then any Bluetooth speaker
as Richard said will do the job you require done.

Both the HomePod Mini and the standard have Siri and VoiceOver built-in.
I think the deciding factor should be if you want a stand-alone smart speaker
that can also stream from your iPhone and give you perhaps a much better sound
than your phone's speaker.
I do not have a smart speaker.
I do have a good sounding bluetooth speaker, and I can stream to my stereo; so
I do not have a need for a smart speaker at this point.

RE: Home Pod Mini

2020-10-18 Thread Cris Ali
Thanks a million Lynn. I heard the apple announcement and I remember them
mentioning the Tune In radio, but I assumed they meant the Tune In premium. I
am glad you clarified that to me.

any music streaming service, what would be the benefits of owning such a smart

stations via the iPhone Bluetooth connection. Apart from that, what one can use
the speaker as a standalone besides SIRI or Alexa? Is it worth for someone who
has no intention to spend money on streaming services to buy a smart speaker

via voice over. I do not know if this means it will be controlled via the voice
over of the iPhone, or does it have voice over built into it. Does anyone know?

 Chris,
Actually you can subscribe to Tunein Radio at no cost. I just happen to
subscribe to some of the pay services. Right now, I use the Echo speakers and
to Sonos. But now that the Home Pod Mini will be able to offer other services
in addition to Apple Music, it is sounding lik something I would truly like.
Apple has been known to have really awesome sound.

Re: Home Pod Mini

2020-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
Both the HomePod Mini and the standard have Siri and VoiceOver built-in.
I think the deciding factor should be if you want a stand-alone smart speaker
that can also stream from your iPhone and give you perhaps a much better sound
than your phone's speaker.
I do not have a smart speaker.
I do have a good sounding bluetooth speaker, and I can stream to my stereo; so
I do not have a need for a smart speaker at this point.

"He that cannot forgive others breaks the bridge over which he must pass
himself,” and we forget that only grace can break the cycle of ancient hatreds
among peoples. (It is notable that while I have regretted not granting grace to
others, I’ve never once regretted extending it.)" - Edward Herbert
