You don’t hold them at all, push them simultaneously and let go. If you hold
for any number of seconds you are not actually turning off the phone but you
perform a hard reset.

Hi,
Make sure the screen curtain is turned off.
Then, do a screen shot with the home and power buttons pressed together.
Then, share that screen shot with an app like KNFB Reader, Seeing AI, Prizmo
Go, and they should be able to get some of the text.
The issue you will have is how clear and crisp the text is.
Digital newspapers are not known for being terribly clear.

With VoiceOver off, sighties can zoom in and enlarge or decrease the text size.
With VO on, this option apparently disappears.

I tried scanning such a screen on my PC, and got a blank page. Speak Screen
doesn’t work either, either with or without VoiceOver on. (Siri says, “sorry,

Hi,

Has anyone ever tried doing OCR from an external scanner where text of an
article onscreen on the iPhone (or iDevice) cannot be read by VoiceOver. I’m
thinking of digital newspaper text on the iPhone screen that is not/cannot be
read by VoiceOver. Would scanning it on a CanoScan scanner – used by Kurzweil
1000 attached to a PC - potentially do any damage to an iPhone screen? (Of
course, would or could one get any satisfactory results thereby?) My newspaper
app can’t be transferred between devices, and I can’t export stuff from it to
DropBox – there being no facility provided for it (and/or I can’t read it. The
search boxes read fine, and do the page numbers. If I type text into the search
box, I’ll get results back, which are read by VoiceOver. But that is of course
a very tedious way to have to get through an article or articles.

Thoughts on this proposition?
Thanks.

I think the results would be much like you have experienced with the newspaper.
 Not very good.
Best to try and give the app developer feedback about it not working well with
VoiceOver.

Yes, got it. And OCR results are .. well poor enough! Still, an
improvement on not being able to get anything at all. Some words break through
the fog.

Do you think/find that this technique could be used to render inaccessible
screens in some apps in some way readable (or useable?) by us? (App that don’t
do quite well with VoiceOver natively.)

hi,
The jury is out with regard to screen curtain and battery saving. The official
position is: it doesn't save battery. my observation is: it probably does
because when screen curtain is off and brightness is up the phone gets hotter!
as heat is an expression of energy, this, probably, means that the phone is
using more battery life. however, turning the brightness down as far as you
comfortably can, definitely does save battery. these days, now that I can't see
the screen at all, I have the brightness down to 0 and don't bother with the
screen curtain.

Re: Scanning and OCR of text on iPhone screen with an external scanner?

2017-07-18 Thread Flor Lynch
Hi,

Thanks for that, Richard. I thought there should be a way to get a screenshot,
and you have now provided it. I will experiment, and give it a try. (I have
KnfbReader. When I last checked it in the newspaper’s app, brightness was 96%.
High.)

The issue you cite regarding digital text not being clear is certainly true
with scanning images of text in them on a PC. (Stupidly small fonts and point
sizes of 4, etc.; or it may be that this particular organisation – PageSuite UK
– does its clients’ many newspapers cheaply.)

Hi,

Then, do a screen shot with the home and power buttons pressed together.

Go, and they should be able to get some of the text.

Subject: Scanning and OCR of text on iPhone screen with an external scanner?

Thanks.

Re: Scanning and OCR of text on iPhone screen with an external scanner?

2017-07-18 Thread 'Sandratomkins' via VIPhone
hi,
The jury is out with regard to screen curtain and battery saving. The official
position is: it doesn't save battery. my observation is: it probably does
because when screen curtain is off and brightness is up the phone gets hotter!
as heat is an expression of energy, this, probably, means that the phone is
using more battery life. however, turning the brightness down as far as you
comfortably can, definitely does save battery. these days, now that I can't see
the screen at all, I have the brightness down to 0 and don't bother with the
screen curtain.

just my thoughts, Sandy

Hi,

Has anyone ever tried doing OCR from an external scanner where text of an
article onscreen on the iPhone (or iDevice) cannot be read by VoiceOver. I’m
thinking of digital newspaper text on the iPhone screen that is not/cannot be
read by VoiceOver. Would scanning it on a CanoScan scanner – used by Kurzweil

search boxes read fine, and do the page numbers. If I type text into the search

a very tedious way to have to get through an article or articles.

Thoughts on this proposition?
Thanks.

Re: Scanning and OCR of text on iPhone screen with an external scanner?

2017-07-17 Thread Flor Lynch
With VoiceOver off, sighties can zoom in and enlarge or decrease the text size.
With VO on, this option apparently disappears.

I tried scanning such a screen on my PC, and got a blank page. Speak Screen
doesn’t work either, either with or without VoiceOver on. (Siri says, “sorry,
there is nothing to read here”. Well there is, Siri girl.

Subject: Scanning and OCR of text on iPhone screen with an external scanner?

Thanks.
