Re: am I missing something?????

2020-09-28 Thread Angie Nutt
I’m the opposite: I enjoy hearing about what’s the best recording app etc; of
course this may be different to each person and for me that makes it more
interesting. Some people may not use the web that much, either because they’ve
just started or they haven’t got round to learning it and doubtless all sorts
of reasons. I wouldn’t want to be on this list if people stop asking questions.
Remember, the only stupid question is the one that doesn’t get asked.

I tend to look on the web before asking questions as I might well get a quicker
answer but on hear I like the discussions round whatever comes up.

All the best

Re: am I missing something?????

2020-09-26 Thread regina alvarado
I would never learned to use iPhone back when I had the 4s if I couldn’t have
asked questions here and a couple of other places. I didn’t even know how to
use Safari. I think this list almost every day. I know a lot about iOS now, but
I sure didn’t back then. If it wasn’t for this list I would have been lost. I
taught myself a lot, but this list helped me immensely.

question like "What would be a good GPS app, or What would be a good recording

most of you know, there is a website, http://www.applevis.com which is a

comes to information about the usefulness of particular app's for blind and
visually impaired individuals. I urge each one of you who feel the need to ask
questions which you could easily find the answers yourself from this site to go
there and have a look at all the information which is available. There are
lists of app's concerning various needs or wants, there are podcasts for those

You’re not! Just that some folks have different expectations of a list than
most of us do. If we had 30 hours in a day or more we probably could look up
everything we needed to know assuming it was readily available. For those
impatient with the questions, that is, after all, why they invented the delete
key. Ignore people like that. Maybe they’ll go away!!

Re: am I missing something?????

2020-09-26 Thread Ann
Questions and opinions are allowed on the list. I might have trashed a
perfectly good iPhone recently if not for some very simple advice that
came from this list. And BTW, I did post on AppleVis about the same
problem, but got no help at all.

and, sometimes, I want to hear the opinion of other users concerning
what they feel is the best apps, and their experiences with such apps.
And it's easier to do this through email than having to use something
that is forum based.

I hope it never comes down to a list wide attitude of "You'd better have
exhausted all other sources before you dare to ask a question and annoy
us" on the list. That is not what I signed up for years ago.

There are plenty of ways to manage unwanted email. Set your sorting
preferences to threaded, if possible. Set your subscription to a digest
mode if the frequency of mail is too overwhelming for you. And if it's
what people are saying or how they say it that bothers you, then anyone
is free to remove themselves from any list at any time.

No, it is not what I am saying. I have seen times when individuals
have sent four to six messages to the list when one would have
sufficed. I have seen messages which I pointed out in mine like what
recording app should I get, or what GPS app is the best? There is no
best it is all subjective, and you know what they say about opinions.

Asking questions on the list [was "RE: am I missing something?????"]

2020-09-26 Thread chaltain
True, but I don’t think this is any different from any other mailing list I’m
on. IMHO, we can’t control what or how others post, especially if we’re not the
moderator. With every list, each person has to decide if the list is worth
their time or not. The list will go on just fine if someone decides their just
not getting enough out of the list any more and leaves.

If you’re not already using a threaded mail client, you may want to look into
this option to help you quickly delete those threads you’re not personally
interested in.

Note that better and more meaningful subject lines would end up helping you and
others manage list traffic.

You might also want to reach out to Mark off line to see if you can suggest
some things that he can do to make the list run more efficiently.

I have been subscribed to this list now, probably for more than ten years,
maybe I should say since I purchased my IPhone 4, whenever that was. For the
most part, I find the threads both useful and interesting, however when I see a
question like "What would be a good GPS app, or What would be a good recording
app etc., I start to wonder if I want to continue to be part of this list. As
most of you know, there is a website, http://www.applevis.com which is a
repository of information which can not be overshadowed by any other when it
comes to information about the usefulness of particular app's for blind and
visually impaired individuals. I urge each one of you who feel the need to ask
questions which you could easily find the answers yourself from this site to go
there and have a look at all the information which is available. There are
lists of app's concerning various needs or wants, there are podcasts for those
who feel they need further assistance in becoming familiar with a specific
application and you may just come away with more than you expected. Please,
before you bring a question to the list, consider finding the answer at

RE: am I missing something?????

2020-09-25 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi Fred,

I to delete a lot of messages,

However I always read each email incase there is something I can add to the
thread,

What would be helpful is that if you do see messages / read messages you know
the answer or have an idea of

Why not help by giving an answer,

Not everyone knows everything or thinks they know everything that is asked,

Your all knowingness would be a useful tool for the list.

enough of this! RE: am I missing something?????

2020-09-25 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Ok folks,

Lets pull the plug on this one.\
Everyone has their own thoughts and as useful as apple vis is to some,
Others may not have even known it was there,
And if as Richard says it has no search field then it’s not going to be helpful.

I for one don’t care if someone asks a question on an email list before
searching on the net for the answer,
Or looks in the crapper to see if the ducks are under the rim,

We’re here to help each other
And if some member think they are better than others and don’t need to ask the
questions,
Then great, those people can help by providing the answres they think they know.

Now lets all just play nice with each other
So carry on everyone, don’t’ get put off by the perfection nasties!

Please,
before you bring a question to the list, consider finding the answer at
http://www.applevis.com and thank you.

I agree. Applevis is not always helpful for me and sometimes the podcasts don't
help that much. I could give an example of how it wasn't helpful for me but I
won't tie up the list explaining.

2020-09-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Exactly, and while I think it's OK for experienced users to provide a bit of
instruction as to how one could find the answer to a simple question along with
the answer, it is the nature of mailing lists that lots of questions are asked
twice. Of course things also change, new apps come out and others disappear. I
think many of us for example used to be impressed by and recommend KNFB Reader
even though it is (or was) $100 to buy, but now after only a few short years
it's virtually gone into obscurity because of apps like Voice Dream Scanner
which in many ways do a better job and cost a few bucks. The same applies to
GPS apps, Seeing EYE GPS used to be very good despite the subscription cost or
very high one-time purchase cost, but now even apps like Apple Maps or Google
Maps do a very good job and while I have only used the new Explorer app once, I
was pretty impressed by it and it's free.

Yes, the Apple vis site is indeed helpful. I think you are missing the point
though. Virtually every question asked on this list could probably be answered
with research on the web. People like these lists because they save lots of
research time. I find the questions re best apps interesting & hope people
will not stop asking them. There are aspects of the IPhone that do not
interest me at all. I use the delete key for those emails. You should do the
same for the topics that do not interest you instead of trying to edit the list
to suit your interests.

most of you know, there is a website, http://www.applevis.com which is a
repository of information which can not be overshadowed by any other when it
comes to information about the usefulness of particular app's for blind and
visually impaired individuals. I urge each one of you who feel the need to ask
questions which you could easily find the answers yourself from this site to go
there and have a look at all the information which is available. There are
lists of app's concerning various needs or wants, there are podcasts for those

before you bring a question to the list, consider finding the answer at

am I missing something about finding apps? - Re: Links to Apps in the App Store

2015-02-18 Thread Charles Rivard
Rather than googling, why aren't people just using iTunes to search the
iTunes store? Is there really a need to use another program to find apps,
then use a browser to get to the app that could so much more easily be found
through the use of one program that not only will get you to the link, but
also do the installation onto your device and keep it in your library if you
need it again?

Except that the only thing that the original poster wants to do is get the
links that point to the apps in the iTunes App Store, not necessarily install
those apps on their device.

Re: am I missing something about finding apps? - Re: Links to Apps in the App Store

2015-02-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
iTunes was already suggested multiple times in response to this
question. People have been suggesting Google or iTunes and not really
been passing judgment on which solution is best or putting down anyone
else's suggestion.

I touched on why I recommend Google myself, but the requester wanted
links to apps for an article they were writing. They didn't say what
platform they were writing their article on or whether they wanted to
install the apps themselves or already had the apps installed.

Personally, I don't always have iTunes running. I bring it up to install
a new version of IOS or transfer some music, but in general I don't have
iTunes running. I almost always have Firefox up and running, and if I
don't, it loads faster and takes up afewer resources than iTunes.

I'm frequently posting links to apps I don't have installed myself or
plan to install. I'm also writing articles and email messages from my PC.

For these reasons, I find it easier to just bring up Firefox, search the
iTunes store for an app and post the resulting link in an email message
or a blog article.

Obviously, if someone has iTunes up and running, or wants to look for an
app they have installed but can't recall the exact name of the app or
the developer then of course, iTunes is the way to go. I don't think of
one solution as better than the other, there are just multiple ways to
get to the same information, and I think it's good that we see multiple
suggestions and let people use the one that works for them and their
situation.

Raul, yes, don't misunderstand me, I appreciate all of that. As a new user

Hi Steve. What happens if I am playing with you and when I take my turn you
are sleeping? Should I wait for you to wake up and go about your normal life
and then take your turn after, or should you wake up immediately to take
your turn so I don't have to wait so long? smile.
Please don't take this as sarcasm, but as thinking of it from the other way
around. When you play a game like Dice World, you will play against real
people who have real lives and who might live in a different part of the
world as yourself. So, to minimize the long wait times if that's not what
you want to do, then you might consider only playing with people in your
same time zone, but even then you have the real life factor to deal with.
There are times when I go through my turns in the morning before I go to
work, or while I'm on my way to a client's home.
So it can vary. There are times when I'm bored at night and take a few turns
before going to bed. Other times I go a couple of days without taking my
turn. You have up to 5 days to take your turn before you forfeit. So, I
think this is generous. There have been a few players who have stopped
playing with me because I sometimes take 1 or 2 days to respond, but that is
ok because I can't keep up with more than 25 games at the same time if
players want me to take my turn just as soon as they do. There are times
when I have an hour to kill and will play 3 or 4 games in a row with one
player and ignore the rest of the games because I know that he/she is online
at that time and it's like we are playing face to face. You just gotta find
what works right for you is all.

Hope this helps.

Exactly Raul. I have a life too outside of Dice World or any other game that
I play with people. I hate it when people rush me to take my turn,
especially in RS Games or the Playroom. It's really degrading hearing
someone tell you to Play, when you're doing something else. Oh yeah since

You can't expect everyone to play a game all the way through immediately
when a game is started. That is not how these type games work Some might go
ahead and finish a game when it is first started, but most people don't. If
that is your expectation with any turn base games such as Dice World, you
might as well just delete all of them.

Yes, of course people have lives :p, but surely if you take the decision to
start a game, then wouldn't you expect others to want you to play? Why
would you start something, then go and do something else? Cheers Steve

Exactly Raul. I have a life too outside of Dice World or any other game that
I play with people. I hate it when people rush me to take my turn,
especially in RS Games or the Playroom. It's really degrading hearing
someone tell you to Play, when you're doing something else. Oh yeah since
people are saying what their usernames are, on Dice World and RS it's BBS
and in the Playroom it's bbsshawn.

It's neither. Some people just take longer. After three days, the game will
expire. They have that long to respond to your move. Most people respond within

Re: Dice World, am I missing something?

You could be playing someone clear across the globe which of course would mean
they are on a different time zone, so they play when they are able to.

Subject: Dice World, am I missing something?

Hi folks. Ok so I've got Dice World and I've set up some Farkle games, but what
I don't quite get is the time difference between turns? I currently have 3
games active, but it can take 9 hours or more for the other person to take
their turn!!! Now is this because they are waiting that long? or is it
something to do with the game sending that information to that player?

Anyway, it's a fun little game, but I can't see myself playing it, if it takes
over a week to play a game lol! Advice please! Cheers Steve.

It is not 3 days, it is 5 days. In the help section under frequently asked
questions, it says:
A player will forfeit a game if they do not make a move in 5 days.

It's neither. Some people just take longer. After three days, the game will
expire. They have that long to respond to your move. Most people respond within
an hour or two, but some people take much longer.

Re: Dice World, am I missing something?

2014-03-17 Thread Paul Ferrara
Steve, it all depends on who you are playing; if they are not online at that
time, it can take time for them to play and take their turn; the more games,
the less you deal with this.

New compaq voice and am I missing something

2014-03-10 Thread Jesus Garcia
Just finished updating and I completely agree with those who are
saying there has been a major improvement in the compaq voice, I mean
this is like night from day. Still prefer my HD voice, but this is now
quite usable this is going to be very nice whenever I need to work on
one of my sited friends phones or other IOS devices.
Now did I miss something with Voice Dream or is this a new addition with
the update. I see Voice Dream is now showing up in the control center?

Am I Missing Something re Digit-eyes?

2012-04-28 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hello All.

I have yet to read the tutorials re Digit-eyes but have read messages about it
on this list and when opening the App, it seemed easy to use as explained in
the tips.

My problem is this.

I took out a box from the freezer and thought I'd try the App. So pointing my
I phone 4S holding it a few inches away as the tip suggests, I start the scan.
After the initial bleep, and the ticking sound begins. No feedback from Voice
Over and this sound continues and continues. So, what is wrong with it and did
I do anything wrong? I was also hoping that Voice Over would give feedback to
let me know that the bar code was found or not found. Does this App not do
this or is it impossible for this to happen? I'm totally blind and to date
have never been able to get Voice Over or any app to get a picture.

Kawal.

haven't found the bar code yet.
