There should be an option in the file menu to transfer purchases. Plu
t this was actually my first tactic. It was after completing
this task and other such backup tasks then beginning the update where I was
stopped in my tracks by iTunes.

Select the first radial button. Find the sync button to sync your iPhone to
your computer through iTunes. After you've synced your iDevice, you will be
