Re: GPS get current address

2017-07-04 Thread Kelly Pierce
Richard, no. the Galileo satellite navigation system is a project of
the European Union that will be similar to the GPS system created by
the United States. It is not an app or maps. Galileo became
operational in December 2016 with the activation of a few satellites.
The iPhone 7 contains a microchip that supports Galileo satellites but
until more satellites are in orbit and in operation few will
experience much benefit. The much greater accuracy will be available
for those that pay a licensing fee. It is unclear if handset
manufacturers will pay the fee for more accuracy or tell consumers to
by an external navigation receiver. The Chinese are also creating a
satellite navigation system and it is like Galileo in the early stages
of deployment.

Apple is famous for focusing on the benifits of a product and not its
features. As Galileo was not available when the iPhone 7 launched and
the number of satellites is still small, the benefit to the end user
is also small which is why Apple is not talking about it.

Lelia,

I think what you are wanting to accomplish can be done with Ariadne, which
is around $5 or $6 instead of the cost of BlindSquare or Nearby Explorer.
Ariadne will not announce streets although it can give you an approximate
address, But you can create custom points of interest easily.
Once you have created your points of interest you can bring focus to a point
and you will get a clock face tracking announcement along with the
approximate distance to the point. It does a good job of using the compass
if you happen to lose internet connectivity.

One can also use the native maps apps with tracking with heading turned on,
and this will announce major points of interest as well as street crossings.

I hope this helps.

I believe you can do this with Nearby Explorer or Blind Square. Probably
Seeing Eye GPS as well.

Hi, Speaking of GPS and getting addresses and such. I have a question but in
order to ask I have to explain things a bit.

I am moving to a new place and what I want to do is learn to go from my place
to both the mailboxes and the dumpsters and back to my place. Is there a way I
could say go from my place and get to the mailbox with some help then somehow
put my mailbox as a point of interest? And do the same with the dumpsters?

Thanks for any tips.

Re: GPS get current address

2017-07-03 Thread Kelly Pierce
The difference between Siri “Where am I” and paying for Nearby
Explorer is that the end user has the street numbers spoken in his ear
as they change when he walks down the street with or without sell
phone service or a data connection. That’s amazing access worth
paying for!

Siri does this. Just ask - Where am I?

It tells you to a reasonable acuracy.

Maybe someone has answered this already, but I am looking for an app
that will speak the address of the house/building I am currently
passing while I am out walking.

I know that nearby explorer probably has this capability, but I would
like to start with something free if possible.

The landmarks I can find with my cane are minimal in our neighborhood,
and as I go walking it would be helpful to know at least roughly
where I am :-)

TIA,
Don
