If you go to the More tab, then settings, you can set the default (global) behavior for all podcasts, under the new episodes action heading to either stream or download. If you're listening to a specific podcast you can make settings to that one podcast. I have done this for specific podcasts that

Which sound are you referring to? the two sounds you hear when the app starts or when it refreshes indicate the following: the first higher pitched tones that the app is refreshing your feeds, and the secodn lower pitched tones that the refresh has completed and your feeds or subscribed podcasts
