Subject: converting files to ePub for reading on iDevices?

HI all.
I'm wondering if there is a simple utility to convert files from various
formats such as xml and MS Word into ePub for reading in iBooks? I have a
mac, but would like to do the conversion process on my PC if I can. I know
about Robobraille, but am looking for a software solution that may also
allow me to do batch conversion if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help!
Scott

Hi.

I think calibre can convert from xml. Unfortunately calibre is not much
accessible, but maybe it will work. I have sometimes got it to work and
sometimes not.

Best regards Annie.

Re: converting files to ePub for reading on iDevices?

2012-09-05 Thread Scott Davert
Thank you all for your feedback! I'll give stanza a try and see how
well it works.
I've tried renaming files with the xml extention to html, and it
didn't quite work out. I wanted the xml version of the file converted,
as this would preserve any formatting attributes found in the DAISY
content.
As it stands, I'm much more impressed with the readability of files
available in the iBooks app, than I am the read2go app. Being able to
search text, being able to use the command to move by page, and the
fact that braille support just seems better in iBooks are my reasons
for choosing it over Read2go.

Thank you all again for your responses!

HI Russ.
While using this program does create some odd text in the file, it
doesn't seem to be present when exported to iBooks. After this program
was suggested, I looked it up on AppleVis, and there's a step by step
guide on how to do this.

I do believe that Calibre while inaccessible with screen readers can still
be used to convert using the command line prompt.
I haven't given it a try, but I have heard of others fiddling with it and
getting it to work.

You may also want to give that a try.

works.
I've tried renaming files with the xml extention to html, and it didn't
quite work out. I wanted the xml version of the file converted, as this
would preserve any formatting attributes found in the DAISY content.
As it stands, I'm much more impressed with the readability of files
available in the iBooks app, than I am the read2go app. Being able to
search
text, being able to use the command to move by page, and the fact that
braille support just seems better in iBooks are my reasons for choosing it
over Read2go.

Thank you all again for your responses!

2012-09-05 Thread Scott Davert
Right, you have to open the xml with a web browser, copy the text to
the clipboard, and then press alt f to get in to the file menu and
choose create new from clipboard. The shortcut keys for various things
don't seem to work, but you can access the menu structure through the
one that does work, alt f. Then, Just hit alt f again, and go to save
as and enter the book name followed by the .epub extention. Also,
since iBooks indexes books based on the information you can edit in
this program, you need to set the title and author accordingly. Do so
by pressing alt V, and then arrowing down to book info. You can
backspace out the title of unknown and enter whatever you want. Also
note that the next field you get to when tabbing will say genre but
it's mislabled. It's actually the author.
After saving the file where ever you want, copy it to Dropbox, open
Dropbox app on phone, find file, open file, and then go down to the
lower right corner of the screen on your iDevice and double tap the
export button. Choose to export to iBooks, and then wait. Once the
export process has completed, the file will be in your iBooks library
and iBooks will open the file for reading.

Hope this helps,
Scott

I do believe that Calibre while inaccessible with screen readers can
still
be used to convert using the command line prompt.
I haven't given it a try, but I have heard of others fiddling with it
and
getting it to work.

You may also want to give that a try.

Thank you all for your feedback! I'll give stanza a try and see how well
it
Being able to
search
text, being able to use the command to move by page, and the fact that
braille support just seems better in iBooks are my reasons for choosing
it
over Read2go.

Thank you all again for your responses!

Hi Scott,
You might do better to save the .xml file from your browser into the format
that you plan to convert into .epub.
Sorry that suggestion didn't work out, some books convert better than
others.

 HI all.
I'm wondering if there is a simple utility to convert files from
various formats such as xml and MS Word into ePub for reading in
iBooks? I have a mac, but would like to do the conversion process on
my PC if I can. I know about Robobraille, but am looking for a

 possible.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Russ,
Have you turned off all the goodies like smart quotes, hyphenation etc. in

Batch conversion is just when you load up a whole bunch of files to be
converted and they all get converted for you without you having to
intervene at all after you've gotten everything started.
