I would beg to disagree, as I have seen talking dive computers before, and under water speakers, so there is clearly a way of doing it already out there and in use. Re: Whose ordering the Apple watch?
Almost, for those who use braille displays. I can do much much more with a braille display than I can with an Apple watch in terms of interacting with my phone. And all my apps are supported already. The only thing it can do that my display can't is connect to my iPhone via wifi. That, and provide haptic feedback. Is that worth $350 plus? Not to me. I'd rather be a later adopter and have a more stable product that I'll end up paying the same amount of money for. Hi, yes, the watch has a speaker, and calls taken on the watch behave like using a speaker phone. Of course you can use a BlueTooth headset in addition to the watch if concerned about privacy. That is what I've surmised from reading various reviews anyhow. Hi Rick, Am I right to assume that all calls you take on your watch will be with open speaker and therefore, not private? If I'm on a bus, restaurant or any other public place, I don't really like the idea of people around me hearing the other end of the conversation, so short as it may be. I've been using a cell phone for 25 years and it took me a long time even to accept the idea of answering my phone in public. Maybe that's because there weren't very many cell phones around and too many people who had them talked as loud as they could so that everyone around realized they were important enough to have a cell phone. Back then, I was totally blind and a piano tuner and loved my phone because I was on the road all day and found it very convenient to be able to call my next customer for instructions to get to their house and not to pretend that I was a very famous brain surgeon who had to be on call at all times. From what I understand, you can pair a BT headset directly to the watch for listening to music living on the watch itself. Except that the watch will also interact with your phone over wifi thus giving you much greater range than just using a bluetooth headset with your phone, so not exactly no advantage at all. This is just a rough calculation, but an hour of iTunes+ audio, meaning stereo AAC (m4a) at 256kbps including metadata etc. is about 130MB. That into 2GB (2048MB) is about 15 hours of audio. Pretty good for those of us who remember halling a Disman and CD's around. Hi Mary. I currently alternate through 2 watches, a Tisot Silent T, and a watch that is both Braille and talking. I frequently use the BEM speaker band but it isn't a watch. Here are my reasons for getting the Apple watch. 1. I'm a geek and just can't help myself. (lol) 2. I look forward to not having to take my phone off of my belt case every time a notification comes in and getting haptec alerts on my wrist. 3. I also look forward to being able to read and reply to text messages via the watch again without having to fumble for my phone. 4. Making and receiving calls right on the watch also really appeals to me. After reading the many hands-on reviews around, I'm sure there will be some other functions that I'll use daily. I think it's really a matter of convenience. I do agree however that it won't be for everyone and the things that appeal to me might be a turn off for others. My only concern is that it's a 1.0 product and I think we all know how that could go but again the geek in me says go for it Dude! Some of the functionality coming with the Apple watch I was actually getting with the BEM speaker band but alas it isn't a watch. Re: Whose ordering the Apple watch?
Hi Firstly, I hope this goes to the list; doing it on a MacBook Air and it’s the first time I’ve replied other than to an individual. Tempting but for one thing I think it would be better to try them to get the strap size right and also I’ve had enough spent on me lately; smile. I’m hoping to get one for Christmas; yes I know that’s ages! By then I’ll doubtless have heard all about the accessibility, what we can actually do with it. I at first thought I’d like the Apple Watch but wonder now if the sport model would be better as in time there could be a better version so maybe I’ll go for the sport one with a pink band. It will be nice to get my hands on a first gen model; exciting. Re: Whose ordering the Apple watch?
Hi As to why I want one: I suppose my main reason is that I just want to play, see what it can do or rather, what it will be like to use it. Also I understand that it will communicate with my phone anywhere in the house over the WIFI; I can’t do this with my bluetooth earpiece, my house is slightly too long I think. I used to wear a talking watch until it broke and don’t really miss it but if it will be possible to get the time on it accessibly this will be cool. It’ll be good to wear a watch which is water resistant too: not having to quickly remove it should I get caught in the rain and not having to worry when washing my hands. Above all though, I confess to being excited over the prospect of such a device which as a blind person it appears I’ll be able to use, at least to some degree; how much we’ll be able to use still remains to be seen and I can hardly wait until those early adopters have tried it and let the rest of us know their findings. RE: Whose ordering the Apple watch?
Re: Whose ordering the Apple watch?
Thanks, Rick. I am looking forward to hearing the reviews especially from blind people who are using the watch. It could be cool, but I don't get that many phone calls. So, I just can't give up my braille watch, because I do check the time a lot, and I don't always want the room to know I'm doing it. Smile. Hi. At the risk of sounding like a me too message, I must fully agree with Rick's reasons for getting an Apple Watch. However what I'm going to do is wait for my birthday in July. This will accomplish two things. 1, I'll see how it trends, problems and solutions people have. 2, it will give people time to consider pulling together for that cool birthday gift since I'll be 42, and as we all know, that's the answer to life, the universe, and everything. *smile*. Re: Whose ordering the Apple watch?
If I do get it, I'll probably wait awhile too. I want to wait and hear voiceover demos with it first, to see what kind of accessibility we actually get with it. I did hear that some site called Lumoid will eventually allow one to rent it for a week for $25, or $35 or something like that. For me, getting a ride to the Apple Store, clear across the state would cost more than that, so I'd consider doing that to see what VO does on it if demos don't come out by then. - Original Message - From: Raul A. Apple let's you return anything in 30 days. So, I am trying to decide if I want to wait for others' to figure it out or try for myself. I do like the idea of functions on my wrist, but there has to be enough of them accessible via Voiceover to justify the price. Also, being a first generation device, and with Apple's recent business model of Microsoft releases (put it out and let customers find bugs)... But, I have always been something of an explorer.
