Hello Alan,

I'm running the latest version of Zoomtext on my Windows 7 PC.

iTunes 12.4 has not locked up on me--not once.

Your description of the layout reflects my own experience.

I don't know about you but, as a low-vision user of Zoomtext, the first thing I
do is to disable the album artwork column that is the default music Playlist
view. Simply stated, when I select a playlist, I only want to see the list of
songs in that list, without any artwork.

To have a playlist be displayed without album artwork:

1.
Select a playlist.

2.
>From the View Menu, select View As.

3.
>From the resulting submenu, select songs.

Hi Sieghard and others,

I know others have commented about accessibility issues with the new iTunes
12.4 for Windows but my comments below reflect my using it with ZoomText and my
remaining vision.

Music appears to be the default media selected at the top of the sidebar. This
control is actually a drop-down box that when entered, opens to present Movies,
TV Shows, Podcasts, Apps, Books, and Tones which were simply listed in the old
sidebar. ZoomText announces these after pressing enter and arrowing down the
list but it is slow and inconsistent in doing so and I wonder if the other
screen readers might be having some accessibility issues with this.

When your iDevice is connected via USB cable to your computer, a control for it
will appear just to the right of the media drop-down box. When it has focus,
below it in a stacked list will be Summary, Apps, Movies, Music, etc. which in
iTunes 11.4 were presented as tabs or buttons much like column headings across
the top of the screen. I'm still playing with the easiest way to access these
items since the arrow keys seem extremely sluggish on my system. The mouse
appears the quickest way for those with vision and the tab key I think
eventually gets to all the controls but it takes a good deal of tabbing.

The only other thing I'm noticing with version 12.4 for Windows on my Windows 7
computer is that iTunes often stops responding and I have to go into task
manager and close it in order to thaw out this freeze.

I agree, not that I really miss the sidebar, but this sidebar seems to refer
only to music, it's not like I see Apps, Movies and so on there, they are still
the usual radio buttons and I find this diebar more of a pain in the neck than
anything else.
I actually think that with the exception of file transfer and syncing apps to

Hi Mark. Perhaps visually, it may look like the old sidebar but from a screen
reader's perspective unless I'm missing something, it doesn't feel like the old

even close IMHO. In addition, several lists are broken where focused isn't

I see your point, but it seems like Apple is not calling good guidelines for
making their product as accessible as possible, so that screeners don't have to
do the lifting. Anyhow, your point about screen readers and web browser's makes
sense. I mean, I Think that the functionality we have between the screen
readers and my brothers is just screaming trying to level the playing field. I
mean, a sighted person doesn't need a screen reader to be able to go down a
page heading by heading, they just scroll down a page with the mouse, and look
for different looking text that's bolded or in a different font or something,
or otherwise different from surrounding text, and they know immediately that
it's a heading. And I know that links are blue and underlined, so that is
another visually distinguishing feature for sighted people. I guess my point is
that while Scripps are great, Apple should be making iTunes actually
accessible, not that they haven't done a good job in the past, so that the
Scripps just provide extra functionality, or functionality that's more
desirable for some. I guess that the scripts should be icing on the cake, not
the cake itself. Am I making sense?

Thanks,
Ari.

2016-05-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Rose,

I agree completely, in an ideal world Apple would do all they can to provide
the screenreader companies with the tools to make iTunes beautifully accessible
and they would work with them well in advance so that once a version is
released this is all done, tested and functioning. Microsoft more or less does
this since for some time now Jaws had an updated version available when a new
version of Windows was released on or before the release. Of course in the past
these Windows updates came once every several years and were in the works for a
long time unlike iTunes which may release a major update, i.e. version 10, 11,
12 etc. But iTunes has these in between updates which sometimes seem to be
changing the look and feel as in this 12.4 version.
Anyhow, all we can do is write to Apple Accessibility and tell them about the
issues, ask them to deal with them and let them know (in a constructive way)
that they really need to address these things before and not after. I do say
"in a constructive way" because simply expressing your frustration won't help
and they are less likely to take such messages seriously.

Sieghard

I have to agree with you. iTunes 12 for me has been one headache after
another. Using JAWS, no eyes here to see screens.

Sorry, but it's not the job of the screen reader manufacturers to make iTunes
accessible, it's Apple's; from what I've been hearing about the latest iTunes
update, they've failed rather spectacularly regarding accessibility. Doing
anything with apps has been a problem in iTunes 12 from the beginning.
Ringtones still work like they used to, and I wish apps would go back to being
checkboxes that you could check or uncheck, and then hit the apply button to
sync or remove them from your device. Also, file sharing in iTunes 12 has
gotten really, really crappy!

Ari

I actually think that with the exception of file transfer and syncing apps to
your phone the versions of iTunes 12 before this one worked just fine.

I've not updated yet because several people who have updated and turned on the

many lists still do not work with any screen reader.
So, I'd stick with what works.

RE: iTunes SideBar, Anyone?

2016-05-21 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ari,

I beg to differ a bit on this, yes, I think it is of course the responsibility
of Apple to make sure iTunes has accessibility, but it is also the job of
screenreader makers to make sure the experience is the best it can be
especially with such a popular piece of software. Without scripts for
screenreaders the experience we have with many popular software packages would
not be what it is if we only relied on what the makers of said software are
doing. Can you imagine web browsers without the functionality in place for
navigating by headings, finding buttons, edit fields, links etc. These elements
are there and part of HTML, but the ability to access them with quick
navigation keys or being able to pull them into a simple list is exclusively
because of the work done by Jaws and other screenreaders and not because
Microsoft or Firefox has done this.

Sieghard

2016-05-21 Thread englishrider91
Sorry, but it's not the job of the screen reader manufacturers to make iTunes
accessible, it's Apple's; from what I've been hearing about the latest iTunes
update, they've failed rather spectacularly regarding accessibility. Doing
anything with apps has been a problem in iTunes 12 from the beginning.
Ringtones still work like they used to, and I wish apps would go back to being
checkboxes that you could check or uncheck, and then hit the apply button to
sync or remove them from your device. Also, file sharing in iTunes 12 has
gotten really, really crappy!

Thanks,
Ari

2016-05-20 Thread Alan Lemly
Mark,

I'm glad iTunes 12.4 hasn't locked up on you. Maybe it's just my bad luck and
it doesn't happen so often that I can't live with it.

I agree about getting lists as lists and thanks for the instructions on how to
lose the album art.

Hello Rick,

I spent quite some time using iTunes 12.4 on my Windows 10 laptop with the
latest version of Jaws. I must say that, while some aspects of iTunes remain
somewhat accessible, my experience was definitely disappointing.

Now I say this realizing that one's mileage may vary depending upon how they
use iTunes.

I was certainly able to obtain and manage various resources from within iTunes
but the overall experience was, somehow deflating, to say the least.

Having said this, I have full confidence in the developers of both Jaws and
Window Eyes to step up to the proverbial plate on this and smooth out the
rough-edges.

I am sadden, however, at the fact that those of us who use Windows
screen-readers can so easily lose access to what has become a vital tool even
with all of this so-called marvelous technology around us.

I am not going to get on my soapbox, here, but this kind of thing is exactly
what motivated me to purchase my first Mac 7 years ago.

I am not trying to convert anyone, I'm just saying.

Hello Rose,

The option to either show or hide the SideBar is only available when not in the
phone view. Or, more simply stated, make certain you do not have your phone
connected to iTunes when you attempt to hide or show the SideBar.

I know this sounds ridiculously confusing but, nevertheless, it's true.

I agree, not that I really miss the sidebar, but this sidebar seems to refer
only to music, it's not like I see Apps, Movies and so on there, they are still
the usual radio buttons and I find this diebar more of a pain in the neck than
anything else.
I actually think that with the exception of file transfer and syncing apps to
your phone the versions of iTunes 12 before this one worked just fine.

Hi Mark. Perhaps visually, it may look like the old sidebar but from a screen
reader's perspective unless I'm missing something, it doesn't feel like the old
sidebar at all and I am not in the phone view. The sidebar is enabled but not
even close IMHO. In addition, several lists are broken where focused isn't

Thanks, and how weird, because in 11 one of the things I liked was being able
to keep the sidebar set on summary so I could see things about the phone when
it was plugged in! Apple and iTunes creators could and should have to discover
more than albums using a screen reader, and the other day mine said hide this
and I did not hide it, did not see it either.

I sure do miss my late husband's partial vision, well him took but his eyes did
me a lot of favors even when he was very ill.

Hello Rose,

The option to either show or hide the SideBar is only available when not in the

connected to iTunes when you attempt to hide or show the SideBar.

I know this sounds ridiculously confusing but, nevertheless, it's true.

RE: iTunes SideBar, Anyone?

2016-05-19 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Rose,

The option to either show or hide the SideBar is only available when not in the
phone view. Or, more simply stated, make certain you do not have your phone
connected to iTunes when you attempt to hide or show the SideBar.

I know this sounds ridiculously confusing but, nevertheless, it's true.

Mark

Hello Everyone,

I am posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries Mailing List.

I am so surprised that no one has mentioned the return of the iTunes SideBar in
iTunes 12.4. (smile)

If you didn't know it, it's back and looks almost like it did in iTunes 11 and
earlier.

Yep, it's true. From the View menu, select Show SideBar.

Enjoy,

Mark
