why would IBM want to alienate the traditional VM customer and upset the
VM community as a whole?

We don't run z/VM any more due to ... nevermind. But I do have a

NetMaster/VM! Wow! I have not worked with that product in twelve

According to IBM: VSE/VSAM for VM (5686-081) has been withdrawn

marketing concurrently with VSE/ESA 2.7, i.e. it cannot be ordered

My customer also uses Connect:Direct and NC Access, both require VSAM.
From IBM they've got Netview and NPM (Netview Performance Manager) that
use VSAM.

We too are very heavy users of VSE/VSAM. Not only for CONNECT:Direct

Since one cannot order VSE/VSAM anymore, by implication, IBM is not going
to sell any more licenses of NetView/VM either.

I think you need to ask a few questions first.
1) What functions have been added to VSE/VSAM that were not added to
VM/VSAM?
2) What functions are planned to be added to VSE/VSAM that would make
the current VM/VSAM incompatible with VSE/VSAM catalogs

Therefore VM/VSAM cannot not exist. That which
