This feature, as useful as it is, does not seem to be consistent. For example, in Macromedia Studio MX, Freehand, Fireworks and Flash have the check box but Dreramweaver doesn't, yet all work fine in MacOS 9. Many other instances of similar anomalies abound. I would also love to know the answer

I have a similar problem with an Epson 1640SU scanner on 10.2. Photoshop can't detect a scanner, neither can Epson Smart Panel and the Image Capture software wont let me scan negs and transparencies. Wish I was back in 8.6! Kevin
