Something similar happened to me last week. My Epson 1270 kept stopping half
way through a printed page. I tried all the same things you have, including
permissions etc. etc., but to no avail.
I went to the epson site and re-installed the recommended software. I then did

I also upgraded with 10.6.2 combo yesterday and my firewire external drives are
behaving normally.
Have you tried upgrading a second time from the same combo or another download
of the same combo? You may have an interrupted or corrupted file.

Sometimes the earphone jack (female) can be faulty or starting to
corrode and the switch turning on and off the internal speakers just
needs a clean.
If this is the case inserting the earphone plug and withdrawing it a
few times can get it working.

This happened to me in Tiger 10.4.11 only this morning after a sync
with Mobile.Me from Snow Leopard 10.6.1 and a subsequent clean up.
I got it sorted out eventually, only to find out later that you had a
similar issue.
As usual, Ronni's sound advice will fix it.

larger partition and re-install OS 10.3. The problem with Address Book
and the Keyboard were completely resolved by this action.

I have a user here with a standard corded G4 keyboard - at some stage
around upgrading to 10.3 he lost the volume up / volume down and eject
buttons on the keypad. The fault is certainly not mechanical and posts
there is a strange .plist file somewhere that is corrupt.
I think it is time for me to stop guessing and ask someone with more
experience.

We searched the HD with the finder and luckily they were there.
Whew! An anxious night while we checked and then the usual tut tut, you
should always back up lecture.
