I was in process of following Daniel's suggestions - Repair
Permissions on both machines made no difference. Seeing your message,
I checked System Preferences Security Firewall. On the MBP I had
this set to Allow only essential services. Changed it to Allow all
that if you tick one of the boxes in the Sharing panel and then check
back at the Firewall panel, then that service has been listed, eg:
File Sharing (AFP)
Printer Sharing
I would have thought that if you had ticked the box and the service was
listed then it would now be considered essential However

Throw away the file sharing CP prefs file the file sharing folder in the
preferences folder inside system folder restart. You'll need to restart
file sharing if in fact you need to have it on.

This may sound silly, but have you turned on Appletalk from within the
Ethernet Network prefs (System Preferences -- Network -- Built in Ethernet
-- Appletalk)? Is file Sharing turned on each

Well, the question only asked about networking two machines,
I have 3 machines on an Airport network a G4, iBook, and an iMac. All have
file sharing enabled and I have had no problems until recently.
When I start up the iMac I now get the message File sharing could not be
enabled. I can access the other machines from the iMac but not the other way

Check that you've got a reasonable amount of free disk space on the
drive that you want to share (and the System volume on that machine).
Sharing a drive creates some quite big files that are used by the

file sharing removable media - zip disks, microdrives, flash cards - all
theses things need to be erased quite regularly it's a pain having to turn
file sharing off back on all the time
