Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-11 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Allen,

You probably have been thinking I had forgotten about you, but I really
haven't sorry for the delay.

Run Software update and install the Canon printer update and anything else it
shows.

When you mention you 'removed' SIMBL, did you 'uninstall' it correctly?

It’s likely to have come bundled with another third-party system modfication
that depends on it.
If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous
changes to other software, especially built-in applications.
The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly
safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work.
SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

If it did not come with an Uninstaller:
Open /Library
From that folder, Delete the items listed below (some may be absent.)
You may be prompted for your administrator login password.

Application Support/SIMBL
InputManagers/SIMBL.bundle
LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax

Log out and log back in, or better still restart your computer.

Test Safari and see if any change to Customise Toolbar.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Ronni

Thanks for your time and effort in pursuing this.

Wake on demand is still a big issue on the open forums, but tone becomes
acrimonious and unhelpful very quickly. I repeat my comment above, and thanks
for your patience and help with WAMUG members, and with me in particular.

I will need to spend some time digesting the comments you made, particularly
relating to the computer operation and the interaction of the two energy saving
options 'Computer Sleep' and 'Put hard disks to sleep when possible'. I may
have jumped to conclusions about what server mode implies.

Like at least one other WAMUG poster, I too am eagerly awaiting release of the
new iMac with the new processor. It seems the wait is just getting longer.

BTW, I never installed Lion - I went directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain
Lion. And now I'm stuck in variable testing mode' and have no time to watch

Hi Allan,

I feel you need to pay a consultant to come out and see how you have everything
set up and also to check your Operating System, as you have been having a lot
of problems in Lion and now in Mountain Lion.
Without seeing exactly how you have things setup connected, and what is
happening on your System; trying to support via email is extremely difficult.

That said, I will add few comments:
You are trying to setup Bonjour 'Sleep Proxy Service', also known as ‘Wake on
Demand’.
So you can wake your Mac remotely - Auto-Wake for Network Access.
Before the Mac actually dozes off, it hands off its list of available network
services - file sharing, screen sharing, iTunes, sharing, printer sharing and
so on. Basically it Keeps a sleeping Mac available on the Network.

I sent a link in my first reply to this subject 'About Wake On Demand'.

More Comments in Situ below:

On 11/10/2012, at 2:27 AM, Alan Smith sma...@iinet.net.au wrote:

 1. The wake for network access option in System Preferences works for me in
certain circumstances. It generates a Console log entry of kernel: Wake
reason: GIGE (Network). When this occurs Apple TV can access iTunes and
play back music (files located on internal hard drive) and movies (files on
external hard drive). But the iMac does not really wake up. The screen is
 still black.

That is correct. With 'Wake on Demand' enabled, your Mac will occasionally wake
for a brief time, without lighting the screen, in order to maintain
registrations with the Bonjour Sleep Proxy.

The external drive only becomes active (wakes?) when it needs to access a
movie - not for music. The basic indication of things not working properly
is when ATV gives its messages about Home Sharing. Then the Mac has to be
woken by the keyboard which also lights up the screen display. This
results in a Console entry of kernel: wake reason: OHC2 with a narrowing
(in my case) to the bluetooth device. We now have several versions of what
is meant by the iMac being awake.

What appears after kernel: wake reason: OHC2 as you have noticed indicates
what triggered the Wake on Demand.
OHC: stands for Open Host Controller, is usually USB or Firewire. If you see
OHC1 or OHC2 it is almost certainly an external USB keyboard or mouse that has
woken up the machine. If you don't want a bluetooth device waking your Mac,
disable Allow bluetooth to wake this computer.

 2. Similar ambiguity exists with what is meant (by me) and understood (by
you) when I talk about the iMac in Sleep mode. I talk about deep sleep or
light sleep to describe certain conditions, but these are not formal Apple
 definitions.

Sleep: The Mac's RAM is left powered on while it's sleeping. This allows the
Mac to wake up very quickly, because there's no need to load anything from the
hard drive. This is the default sleep mode for desktop Macs.

Find Out Which Sleep Mode Your Mac is Using:

You can find out which sleep mode your Mac is using by opening the Terminal
application, located at /Applications/Utilities/.
When the Terminal window opens, enter the following at the prompt:

pmset -g | grep hibernatemode

You should see one of the following responses:

hibernatemode 0

hibernatemode 1

hibernatemode 3

Zero means normal sleep and is the default for desktops; 1 means hibernate mode
and is the default for older portables;
3 means safe sleep and is the default for portables made after 2005. My MacBook
Pro uses hibernatemode 3 which is default as I mentioned.

http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/f/What-Really-Happens-When-You-Put-Your-Mac-To-Sleep.htm

An external observer can see the display as on or off, may hear the hard
drive fan or spinning disk or may note other indicators such as router led
signals. I think the distinction is important in tracking the cause and cure
of why Apple TV won't wake iMac.

Display Sleep is different to Computer Sleep. Display Sleep only sleeps
the Display - Computer

Have you been able to update the firmware using a Windows machine?
It would help if you can update the firmware.

If you have not updated the firmware yet, make sure you read the 3G21WB
Firmware Upgrade Instructions
located here with the firmware.
http://support.netcomm.com.au/sm/firmware/3g21wb
It explains what to do if you have a Mac:

If you have a MAC

Step 1 of 3: Install the BigPond Elite Network Gateway on a Windows computer by
using the installation USB stick that came with your kit.
Step 2 of 3: Follow the upgrade instructions for Windows users above.
Step 3 of 3: Once you've upgraded your device, you can continue using your

Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-11 Thread Allen Gladwell
Thanks Ronni

Software Update now shows No new software
I have deleted the SIMBL folder from Library/Applications Support and that's
all I could find. I have no idea where it came from or when
I did a Restart and Safari is still the same

It appears that I now have another problem. Yesterday I noticed that that Time
Machine was taking too long on the hourly backups, about 20 mins or more. It
used to be less than a minute. Last night I moved TM to another fresh disc
finishing about 11pm. This morning it went for 40 mins on the new disc before I
stopped it. It's taking a lot of CPU time and the computer is getting hot

I don't know if this is connected to the Safari problem but something is not
right
What I feel like doing is starting again, perhaps with help from the WAMUG
list, and I will have time this w/e. So:-

1- Make sure I have plenty of backups inc two TMs now and backup user
separately
2- Use my Snow Leopard startup DVD to erase the Macintosh HD and re-install OS
   10.6.3
3- Update to 10.6.8
4- Check that Safari and TM are working properly
5- Restore user files and other applications as I need them

Is this a plan? Have I over simplified? It may sound a bit drastic but I
probably have accumulated rubbish from over the last 9 years (we didn't do a
clean install in 2006 from the previous MPB)

Regards Allen

It is almost certainly spam, but it is difficult to tell what they hope to
achieve with this message. Looking at the raw source would help as it is
possible that the URL given is embedded in a different URL which is where a
browser would go if you clicked on the link.

In fact the athttps bit makes the URL illegal apart from anything else - there
is no such protocol and so clicking on this link will just result in an error
message from your browser. Presumably they meant to say digital Banking at
https://www.rbsdigital.com/default.aspx;. The rbsdigital.com domain is owned by
the Royal Bank of Scotland but as suggested above you cannot be sure that this
link (even without the at) will actually take you there.

If you do not bank with the RBoS then it is definitely spam. The awkward
wording of most of the message together with the lack of detail is also highly
suggestive of spam.

I'm with Sev - delete it.

Mysterious Alert Beep

2012-10-11 Thread Alan Smith
Several times this morning I heard an unknown alert beep at irregular
intervals. Possibly glass tone. No physical info window with messages
appeared.

Computer has been running with System Preferences Energy Saver 'Computer
Sleep Never' since about 9pm last night. I 'Shut Down' the computer around
10.30am in case it was an overheating problem. Didn't think to check the
Dashboard ProStat Widget until later. Fan noise remained unaltered
throughout, but not fast or loud. Restarted computer after 30 minutes, reset
Energy Saver preferences to Default (Computer Sleep after 10 minutes) but then
got another beep about 15 minutes later. Been quiet for about an hour since.

How do I determine what app may have generated the sound? The only foreground
on apps have been Finder, Mail, Safari, EyeTV and Console. The only
references to alert sounds that seemed anyway relevant in Help refer to the
startup sequence.

What was it? Do I ignore it, worry about it, or check my insurance and make a
booking with the repair shop?

Re: Safari toolbar problem

2012-10-11 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Allen,

Yes, an Erase Install of Snow Leopard would be very sensible, there are
problems on your current system, most possible brought over from previous
upgrades. As I have mentioned before on WAMUG, left over Clutter from
previous systems can slow your Mac down and also cause problems.
Over time, your disk accumulates obsolete, extraneous, or otherwise useless
files, often called “cruft”—hacker slang for digital detritus. Removing cruft
increases the disk space available for the system and reduces the chance of
software conflicts.
I erased my Hard Drive and did a 'Clean Install' of Lion, and have not
experienced any problems in Lion or now Mountain Lion (which I did just an
upgrade install).

A clean system installation brings the system software back to the standard
configuration. This is necessary when system software is unusable or has been
modified, preventing a normal installation. It is also useful as a final step
in troubleshooting.

Options to Erase and Install and Archive and Install are no longer present
in the Mac OS X 10.6 installer. This was done for convenience, so that users do
not accidentally erase and install their Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard partitions.
However, Erase and Install remains available through Disk Utility, which is
also included on the installation DVD.

After you select your language and click the right arrow, an Install Mac OS X
screen, this is where you diverge from Apple's standard upgrade script and
erase your disk. Choose Utilities Disk Utility.
I would also Repair the Drive also before installing SL.
If you need details how to preform the Erase and then installation of SL, post
back.

Point 1:
Your TM backups and any other current backups will contain whatever is causing
your problems. So you will have to be careful what you 'bring across from any
backup'. First just bring across essential Data. Also installing any
applications you require from the backup is much safer than dragging the
applications across to a clean install.

Point 2:
After the erase and install of SL, download the Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Combo.
Snow Leopard 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
(Note: there's a separate Snow Leopard 10.6.8 Supplemental Update:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429 that is not included in the 10.6.8
combo.)

I have deleted the SIMBL folder from Library/Applications Support and that's
all I could find. I have no idea where it came from or when
I did a Restart and Safari is still the same

It appears that I now have another problem. Yesterday I noticed that that
Time Machine was taking too long on the hourly backups, about 20 mins or
more. It used to be less than a minute. Last night I moved TM to another
fresh disc finishing about 11pm. This morning it went for 40 mins on the new
disc before I stopped it. It's taking a lot of CPU time and the computer is
 getting hot

I don't know if this is connected to the Safari problem but something is not
 right
What I feel like doing is starting again, perhaps with help from the WAMUG
list, and I will have time this w/e. So:-

1- Make sure I have plenty of backups inc two TMs now and backup user
 separately
2- Use my Snow Leopard startup DVD to erase the Macintosh HD and re-install
 OS 10.6.3
 3- Update to 10.6.8
4- Check that Safari and TM are working properly
5- Restore user files and other applications as I need them

Is this a plan? Have I over simplified? It may sound a bit drastic but I
probably have accumulated rubbish from over the last 9 years (we didn't do a
clean install in 2006 from the previous MPB)

Re: Slow connections and ISP excuses

Ronni,

I have not tried to update using a Windows machine. I'd given up up using
Windows machines a few years ago [because I could ;-) ]. However, I tried using
my old copy of Parallels (v5.0.9 etc) with Windows 98 SE. I followed the

increase my video memory, which I did not know how to do, everything came to a
halt. I could no longer abide by the instructions.

I won't try to use a Windows machine. I'm exploring other solutions, most of

Fwd: In iOS 6 tracking is most definitely back on

2012-10-11 Thread Brian Risbey
Hi all,

Did you know?
(Via
http://www.businessinsider.com/ifa-apples-iphone-tracking-in-ios-6-2012-10):

The new iPhone operating system comes with three things that make tracking
easier for advertisers and reduce the likelihood that you'll opt out.

• iOS 6 comes in a default tracking on position. You have to
affirmatively switch it off if you do not want advertisers to see what you're
up to.

• The tracking control in iPhone's settings is NOT contained where you
might expect it, under the Privacy menu. Instead, it's found under General,
then About, and then the Advertising section of the Settings menu.

• The tracking control is titled Limit Ad Tracking, and must be
turned to ON, not OFF, in order to work. That's slightly confusing — ON means
ads are off! — so a large number of people will likely get this wrong.

Those three factors combined mean that a huge proportion of iPhone users are
unlikely to ever opt out of track
ing.

It's a really pretty elegant, simple solution, says Mobile Theory CEO Scott
Swanson. The biggest thing we're excited about is that it's on by default, so
we expect most people will leave it on.

My quick read-around on alert tones directed me to the System Preferences
Sound - sound effects. I didn't realise that the highlighted tone was a user
set default. I clicked on each one to hear the sound generated and glass
seemed nearest to (but not quite?) the alert I heard.

Funk is (was?) the tone heard when I try to do an operation that the computer
doesn't like. Is this the default alert? My problem noise was definitely not
a beep, beep, beep sound. It was a single higher pitched noise of the same
duration as the others and occurred independently of any action on my part.

BTW I would have had iTunes as another app that was on for at least some of
the time.

Cheers
Alan

Or is it a beep, beep, beep sound?

Computer has been running with System Preferences Energy Saver 'Computer
Sleep Never' since about 9pm last night. I 'Shut Down' the computer around
10.30am in case it was an overheating problem. Didn't think to check the
Dashboard ProStat Widget until later. Fan noise remained unaltered
throughout, but not fast or loud. Restarted computer after 30 minutes,
reset Energy Saver preferences to Default (Computer Sleep after 10 minutes)
but then got another beep about 15 minutes later. Been quiet for about an
 hour since.

How do I determine what app may have generated the sound? The only
foreground on apps have been Finder, Mail, Safari, EyeTV and Console. The
only references to alert sounds that seemed anyway relevant in Help refer
 to the startup sequence.

What was it? Do I ignore it, worry about it, or check my insurance and make
a booking with the repair shop?

Re: Mysterious Alert Beep

2012-10-11 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Alan,

Yes, Funk is the default alert sound in System Preferences Sound - Sound
Effects.

Did you have any external drives attached when your heard the 'beep'?
I would disconnect any external drives from the Mac to eliminate if one of them
causing the 'beep'.

Also check any widgets in Dashboard, one of them might give an alert 'beep'
sound.

If you are hearing three beeps
Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Mysterious Alert Beep

2012-10-11 Thread Ronni Brown
I'm trying to do too many things at once, and hit send without finishing If
you are hearing three beeps it could be a faulty RAM stick.
