Re: A Prairie Home Companion

2012-02-25 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Diana,

One of these browsers Might be worth a try on your iPad.

These iPad apps are designed to play Flash content on the iPad.
One or more may work with your content.

Essentially, these apps transcode the Flash on a remote server, then send the
(hopefully) playable content back to your iPad. Lag time can be a challenge
though, due to the time needed to convert the Flash content and return it to
your device.

None guarantees the content you want will play, but worth exploring. You might
try:

Skyfire web browser
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/skyfire-web-browser-for-ipad/id409153623?mt=8

Photon Flash browser
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/photon-flash-web-browser-tabbed/id430200224?mt=8

iSwifter browser
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iswifter/id388857173?mt=8

Best of luck.

Cheers,

If the radio broadcast is digital then you might be able to receive with
a digital radio that has wifi. I enjoy baroque music and there is a
station in Venice that is dedicated to such. Great. It has DAB as well
but that is for local only. There are a number of different brands on
the market, mine is a PURE One Mi.

The show does produce podcasts - would you be able to put those on your
iPad?

Re: A Prairie Home Companion

Hi Ronni, Jewels Merv

I shall try Photon Flash or iSwifter.

I was hoping I could listen on my iPad while I am in hospital after my hip
replacement so an iPad solution is what I am looking for.

The PHC podcasts are just of the 'News from Lake Wobegon' monologue. We used to
be addicted to listening to PHC years ago, I have just found this vast archive
of shows going back to 1996.

I am also interested in Merv's idea but I am not really au fait with digital
radio. I have a small Sony that does DAB/DAB+. I need a bit more info if you
have time Merv. I also like baroque music, the station in Venice interests me.

Thanks to you all.

Re: A Prairie Home Companion

2012-02-25 Thread Neil Houghton
Hi Diana,

This page http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/stations/

Says you can subscribe to a podcast of Garrison Keillor's monologue, The
News from Lake Wobegon, but it won't include the whole show with music etc -
this is the same as, say, Margaret Throsby's show on Classic FM where you
can download her interviews but not the music:

 Podcast

Many listeners have been asking us to make A Prairie Home Companion available
as a podcast. We are unable to do so at this point in time.

The reason we cannot offer the whole show up for podcast is that we feature
many different bands and musicians on our show. As such, their intellectual
property is being broadcast to the listening audiences. We would have to get
each artists' permission, not only to distribute their music in this way, but
they would also have to be comfortable with the fact that it could be shared
 easily.

We do have Garrison Keillor's monologue, The News from Lake Wobegon available
in podcast form. You can subscribe to it here
http://prairiehome.publicradio.org/about/podcast/.

They also point you to apps to listen to the (whole) show on iPhone/iPads:

If you're trying to listen on a mobile device, like Apple's iPhone or iPod
Touch, you'll need to download an App to hear the show. We recommend the
Public Radio Player (iTunes link). Once you've installed the player, you'll
need to find a station that broadcasts Prairie Home Companion.

The iTunes link is
http://itunes.apple.com/app/public-radio-player/id312880531?mt=8

There is more about the app here
http://apps.prx.org/our-apps/public-radio-player/

What stations are eligible to be in the Player?

The station needs to be a public radio station, one of hundreds of
non-commercial radio stations in the United States. Many of these local
stations carry programs you may listen to, like Morning Edition, Car Talk, A
Prairie Home Companion, and This American Life. Familiar names like NPR,
American Public Media, and Public Radio International are organizations that
produce many of the radio programs you hear, but they don¹t actually have
radio stations to play them on. Your local station acquires their own unique
combination of programs from these providers and others including PRX, and
also produces its own. Most public radio stations focus on news and talk, but
many also play great music all day long everything from classical and jazz
 to blues to indie rock.

So it seems you just need to pick one of the Public radio stations that
transmits A Prairie Home Companion.

Have fun ;o)

Cheers

iPhone/iPod Touch Apps

If you're trying to listen on a mobile device, like Apple's iPhone or iPod
Touch, you'll need to download an App to hear the show. We recommend the Public
Radio Player (iTunes link). Once you've installed the player, you'll need to
find a station that broadcasts Prairie Home Companion.

About the Public Radio Player

Stations looking for stream submission information, please go here.

The Public Radio Player is a free iPhone app that offers streaming audio from
public radio stations across the United States.

The Public Radio Player currently offers more than 500 station streams and over
1,000 on-demand programs. The app has had over three million unique downloads
and has ranked as one of the top free apps on iTunes since its debut in the
fall/winter of 2008.

• Download the Public Radio Player from the iTunes App Store.
• Like the Public Radio Player on Facebook.
• Read our FAQ.
Public Radio Exchange (PRX) is responsible for the development of the Public
Radio Player. The project was funded by a generous grant from the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting and originated from a collaboration led by PRX in
partnership with NPR, American Public Media, and Public Radio International,
with participation from Doc Searls and Project VRM at the Berkman Center for
Internet and Society at Harvard University.

The Public Radio Player project emerged during the iPhone’s early days as a way
to get public radio on mobile. We wanted to gain expertise in mobile
development while bringing public radio to more listeners. CPB, PRX, and the
original project partners saw the app development process as a way to encourage
communication and knowledge-sharing in order to harness the collective
expertise, talents, and resources of the public radio system. And we succeeded,
with high levels of station support and participation, and widespread adoption
of the app. PRX has gathered insights about mobile web development and usage
that we have shared with the public media system.

Is it just my old iPad or is it all Mac mobile devices?

Re: A Prairie Home Companion

2012-02-25 Thread Diana Graham Stevens
Thanks to all who gave advice. I tried with iSwifter but I could not make it
work properly. I thought I had purchased the browser but I couldn't find it.
The iPad screen seemed unresponsive.

I was forced into opening a Facebook account, but it would only show 1994-2012
as my birth year. It seems to have accepted 1994 so I am an 8 year old despite
17 being the minimum age to purchase the App. I decided I was not compatible
with iSwifter ( too old and thick) so I gave up and purchased Photon.

Photon works and I can listen to the archived shows. That is what I wanted. I
shall have to wait to get the confirmation of my purchases to find if I
actually purchased iSwifter as well.

The WAMUG list has once again come up trumps!

Best wishes to all from Diana (a night- owl tonight)
