Brilliant Ronni,

I have Monolingual still running, watching the places where languages I would 
never use are located and removing them.  I assume this action might be a 
positive contribution speed of operation.  Its certainly freeing up space!

Hi Pat,

Your Mavericks system does sound like it has some niggling problems. If you 
find that problems persist you might be best to boot into Recovery Mode and 
reinstall Mavericks.
Or get a consultant (I recommend Daniel) to have a look at it for you.

Apple ships each Mac with a lot of language files, which do take up space. 
Unless you are a polyglot, you'll never use these files. Or miss them when 
they're gone. You can Install "monolingual"  a free utility that removes 
unneeded languages. Just click the languages you want to remove and click the 
Remove button. 
DON'T delete English!  - I keep English (Australia) & English United States)
 The scan takes longer than you would expect, there are a huge amount of 
languages installed by default.

Did all this. There were a lot of permissions to be repaired, mainly in Safari 
and iTunes, and almost exclusively concerning foreign languages.

I did have permission to read and write to iTunes files, and the Lock box was  
not selected.

So I guess I will just carry on and see if the message appears again.

Is there any harm in removing the foreign language files in Safari? I clicked 
on the icon and asked to see the contents. I remember some years ago there was 
an application called ‘Debablizer’ that ran through files and removed the ones 
in unused languages. A Google search reveals that there is a Debabelizer app 
but it is intended to help translate photos of signs in foreign languages.

Error -54 is normally a software lock on a file or a permissions error.

1. Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility - click on your Hard Drive - select ‘First Aid’ button - 
‘Repair Disk Permissions’

2. Then check you have ownership or permissions to write to the iTunes files. 
They should be located in your Macintosh HD/Users/UserName/Music\iTunes 

A) Select the iTunes Folder - Go to File > Get Info ---(or Command-I on the 
iTunes folder)
Check you DON’T have ‘Locked’ selected

B) Then under ‘Sharing & Permissions’ that you have “Read & Write” Privilege

Don't unlock the little padlock at the bottom of the Info Panel.
You would only unlock the padlock if you were not the owner of the Item (i.e.: 
you did not have  "Read & Write" Privilege on the iTunes folder)

If you were not the owner (did not have "Read & Write" privilege of the 
folder), you must click the small lock icon in the bottom-right corner of the 
'Get Info' window and authenticate as an administrator user.

Doing the "Repair Disk Permissions" in Disk Utility would have corrected your 
iPhone problem.

I followed your instructions, repaired permissions, checked the info on the 
iTunes folder. I have Read & Write permission and the Locked box was not 
ticked. However, the little lock icon at the bottom of the Info panel was shown 
in a locked position, so I unlocked it.  I finally got my hands on the iPhone 
again, plugged it into the computer and finished the job: no pesty error 
messages appeared. So, thank you very much. It would be great if the error 
messages were not quite so cryptic!

Hi, Ronni,

The iPhone was plugged into the computer for charging, backing up, and updating 
apps, with iTunes open. I don't have the phone in hand at the moment - it's 
gone for a walk, so I can't check - but I believe that was the whole message 
plus the line 'Don't warn me again' with a checkbox.

iOS 6.1.3 is correct.
Are you saying this error message is appearing on your iPhone when you have it 
connected to power when charging it?

Or is it appearing in iTunes App when you connect the iPhone to iTunes on your 
Mac?

And is that the complete error message... It does not have another line after 
it?

Error message -54

I was recharging an iPhone 4, 16 GB with 11 GB free (not much on it!). It is 
running iOS 6.1.3, which is apparently the correct OS for it.

However, the message, 'the iTunes Library could not be saved, error -54', began 
appearing. I looked on the Apple Support page, got hundreds of hits for that 
message, but I could not figure out how it applied to this iPhone 4.

What could it mean and what are the consequences??
