Hello Steve

No I just pasted in Duck Duck as a sample, then change everything back

I notice your Default Search Engine is Yahoo.
Yet your Homepage is set to Duck Duck.

Does that seem contradictory ?

I have just discovered that my choice of search engine has been
corrupted: I was using Duck Duck Go. And now I discover that it
has been surreptitiously replaced by Bing and I haven't been able
to change it back. I don't like this at all! Who made this

Re: Search engine!

2018-05-14 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi Pat

I would try the MalwareByte’s scan as others have mentioned. Worth a look just
to rule it out.
When you click on “Search” in your screen shot, what do you have showing
there? You should have a drop down list there.
What actually happens when you click on it, where it most likely shows Bing,
and you try and choose “Google”. (as attached).

With the other drop down menu, you need to have a blank page, or new tab
showing, so nothing is written there, then click just beside the magnifying
glass (or should be able to ( like attached below).

It should then show either of the drop down list to choose “Google”.

You could also check Extensions in Safari, incase you have something installed
there as well. (Safari - Preferences - Extensions).

But I’d try the AntiMalware scan first - https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

Kind regards
Daniel

Hi Pat,

You might have installed some malware as Alan has suggested. Especially if you
haven’t got Firewall turned ON in your System Preferences > Security & Privacy
> Firewall.

Go here: https://www.malwarebytes.com/pricing/?
<https://www.malwarebytes.com/pricing/?>
and download the Mac ‘Free’ version - by click on ‘DOWNLOAD NOW’

You can download the "Malwarebytes-For-Mac-User-Guide.pdf” here:
https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1883
<https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1883>

1. Install Malwarebytes.app version 3.3 then run a Scan by click on - StartScan
(which initiates a Threat Scan).
2. Let us know the results please.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: Search engine!

2018-05-13 Thread Pat
Hi, Daniel,

Thanks for your reply, but I still haven’t been able to change away from the
pernicious Bing. Clicking on the magnifying glass does nothing. On the Safari
Preferences Search tab, trying to change Bing to anything else is futile. I
attach a screen shot of the Safari General Preference tab. It differs from the
screen shot that Peter Faulks sent (thanks, Peter) in that my list does not
contain a Default search engine. I am convinced that these changes are the
result of the Security 2018-001 update. I have to say I was puzzled by the
2018-001 number because it is already May and there must have been previous
security updates, or is that wrong?

Cheers,
Pat

Hi Peter.
I notice your Default Search Engine is Yahoo.
Yet your Homepage is set to Duck Duck.

Does that seem contradictory ?

Re: Search engine!

2018-05-12 Thread Pat
Hi, Daniel and others who responded,

I wish it was this easy. Those ‘remedies’ were the first things I tried to do,
but, Bing just doesn’t go away. Looking at the Websites tab of Safari
preferences it appears that you can turn Bing off and turn on the preferred
browser, but that doesn’t work either.

This change obviously came with Security Update 2018-001 I installed last
night. Working through the list, if I turned on DuckDuckGo, the warning icons
appear and say it isn’t secure enough, and the same warning comes up with other
choices and only Bing is left.

Probably most other members have installed this already — are they stuck with
Bing also?

Thanks,
Pat

Re: Search engine!

2018-05-12 Thread Daniel Kerr
Another way to also change it. When you have a “blank” page open (and you can
see the line “Search or enter website name”, if you click on the search
magnifying glass thing to the left of this, you’ll get a drop down menu. You
can change here.
Otherwise it’s Safari menu - Preferences - Search.
“Search engine”. Then choose from the drop down menu you want.

Some times websites will change the search for you (or ask you if you want to
go to this page, without you realising it’s meaning it’s going to change it.
And some software can also ask if you want to change it as well, as part of the
install of the software. Malware can also do it as well sometimes - though
normally won’t change it to Bing, it will change it some other weird search
engine or “tracking” website.

Kind regards
Daniel

If you’re using Safari, go to Safari Preferences, Click on the Search icon, in
the first line it says Search Engine and mine shows four choices.

If you can’t change it there, someone cleverer will tell you how to clear the
preferences. Or maybe there is a way to reset Safari to standard.

I found problems.

1. No side scroll or other way of movong down each page, so only got
part o the results.

2. Seemed to be a lot of duplication.

3. The one limk that seemed to be of value was dead - failed to open

In my opinion the best thing to do is to do it manually yourself, then track
the results. The main ones you want to get into are Google, MSN, Yahoo
really - are you just submitting for the sake of submitting or do you
actually want to rank well and generate traffic?

Most of these programmes that do mass submissions submit to hundreds of
irrelevant link farms which big engines like Google look down on, and all
you get out if it is a LOT of SPAM (when was the last time you looked on
some generic link farm for any useful information?)

Hope this helps...

Search Engine Software

2006-07-10 Thread Kelly Duffy

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has experience with any of the programmes
that are supposed to add web sites to search engines.

I'm looking for a simple programme that will give me good results, and
was wondering if anyone can recommend anything, or tell me of
programmes to avoid at the same time!

Thanks,
Kelly

Sherlock 2 .... Search Engine List Upgrade

2004-07-07 Thread John Weekes

Hi All

The answer to this one is probably terribly simple & known to
everyone else but me !!

Although these days I use Google for searches, I was wondering if the
internet search engine list in Sherlock 2 can be updated from any
source.

My computer (and Sherlock) are about 4 years old and I'm sure many of
the search engines on the list no longer exist. Plus Google and
Yahoo are not listed.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Regards
John.

My alltime favourite Aussie search engine is :

uses yahoo as the search engine i think, but only looks up aussie stuff
(unless you ask it to look up world stuff!). Pretty good even for
searching for stockists of products etc.

FW: email address search engine, or directory.

2002-12-17 Thread Sojourn

You could try my Australian e-mail searches
http://library.trinity.wa.edu.au/library/austemail.htm
Where there are a number of links (although the sofcom one seems to have
died!) I need to fix that.
