TAGS Alumni sightings
I recently watched the Clint Eastwood movie "Hang 'em High" (1968) and notice the following TAGS alumni on there, some in very small parts and others in practically starring roles. Here they are: Pat Hingle (Fred Gibson on TAGS) Arlene Golonka (Millie Hutchins on TAGS) Alan Hale, Jr. (big Jeff Pruitt on TAGS and Skipper on "Gilligan's Island") James Westerfield (Uncle Ollie on TAGS) Joe Sirola (Freddy Fleet on TAGS) Tod Andrews (Ralph Case on TAGS) It was BIG! car tags
This is in response to Steve Cooke's message about what other car tags could he use since he is giving up his JL 327 license plate to someone with a squad car. My suggestion is the tag DC 269. It was used on the squad car three times in three season 1 episodes. After these three episodes, the show consistently used JL 327. So you could legitimately say that you have a TAGS plate that was seen on the squad car on the show. Just a thought. Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Star Trek on Gomer Pyle
The other night I watched the "Gomer Pyle, USMC" episode where Friendly Freddy was running a computer dating service that duped both Sgt. Carter and Gomer. The interesting thing is when Freddy steps into the back room to supposedly feed the questionnaire into his "computer", he puts on a record of a sound of a computer while his female accomplice studies over the questionnaire. The sound of his computer on the record is none other than the sound from "Star Trek" (the original 1960s series) that you hear when the crew are on the bridge. I wonder if Freddy sent "Star Trek" a royalty check. It makes you think! Mr. Schwump ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Aunt Bee sighting
I happened to watch some of the 1952 movie "Horizons West" and saw several TAGS alumni there. I was especially surprised to see Frances Bavier (Aunt Bee) play the mother of the star of the movie Robert Ryan. Other stars seen in the movie include: Julie Adams (nurse Mary) Rock Hudson (Aunt Bee's favorite actor) Raymond Burr (Perry Mason) Dennis Weaver (Chester) James Arness (Matt Dillon) It was BIG! Peggy McMillan
I happened to watch an episode of "Gunsmoke" last night and saw our very own Peggy McMillan (Joanna Moore) on it. The episode was titled "Honey Pot" (1965). She was beautiful as ever and worked in the saloon. She still had that nice Southern accent of hers just like on TAGS. I also saw Hank Patterson playing Hank the stable man on that episode. Hank was the old hobo on the railroad tracks on the TAGS episode "If I Had a Quarter Million" where Barney finds the suitcase with $250,000 in it. Hank is probably best known as Mr. Ziffel on "Green Acres". I think Peggy's husband on "Gunsmoke" was played by Harold Grigsby on TAGS (whose wife is a blonde out of a bottle), but I can't swear to it. It was big! Mr. Schwamp "My wife Doris is a good woman. Nobody can pull a plow quite like Doris." -- Mr. Ziffel ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
another spider reference
Here is another spider reference I don't think anyone has mentioned. In the episode "Opie's Most Unforgettable Character" (I think) at the beginning Opie is at the courthouse as Andy is cleaning cell #2. Opie says something like, "If these bars could only talk." Andy responds, "Since Otis is doing his drinking in Mt. Pilot, about the only thing these bars now see is a couple of fat spiders." Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Rimshaw house
The Rimshaw house is actually Mrs. Wiley's house! They just made it look all spooky. Notice the yellow house that Arnold and Opie walk next to while playing baseball. That is the house across the street from both Andy's house and Mrs. Wiley's. Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Aunt Bee repeating names
Barney wasn't the only one to repeat names. Aunt Bee also did it. Can anyone tell me when Aunt Bee repeated someone else's name exactly 7 times in a row? Inquiring minds want to know Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Aunt Bee repeating names
No, it wasn't "The Fun Girls" episode where Aunt Bee repeats another character's name 7 times in a row. Any other guesses? Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
TAGS on The Twilight Zone
I happened to watch an episode of "The Twilight Zone" the other night and saw 8 TAGS alumni on that one episode. The episode was called "I Dream of Genie" (season 4/episode 12) from 1963. It starred our very own Howard Morris (Ernest T. Bass) as George P. Hanley, a very mild mannered bookkeeper (much different from Ernest T.). It is interesting that his name in the episode is very close to the NC governor who came to Mayberry in "The Cannon" episode, whose name was George C. Handley. Other TAGS characters appearing include: Jack Albertson (cousin Bradford J. Taylor) Mark Miller (temporary deputy Bob Rogers) Ben Astar (Mr. Vasilievich the Russian at the summit meeting) James Millhollin (Arnold Finch the money counterfeiter) Joyce Jameson (Skippy the fun girl) Robert Ball (Mr. Oldfield the Bargain Supermarket store manager) Molly Dodd (Nate Bracey's wife in "Class Reunion") And speaking of "The Twilight Zone," can anyone tell me how many times it was mentioned on TAGS and which episode(s)? Aunt Bee repeating names solution
Since no one guessed the one instance where Aunt Bee is seen saying another character's name exactly 7 times in a row, I thought I would tell you when it was. In "A Baby in the House" color episode Aunt Bee grabs the baby Evie Joy and comes running down the stairs and shouts "Andy" seven times because she thinks something is wrong with Evie Joy. But Opie and Pete just fed Evie Joy some blueberry pie, so she was fine. I know it was preying on your mind. Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Re: "The Ball Game" question
I gladly accept Joe's nomination for "Trained Noticer of the Month." ;-) As for his question about where "The Ball Game" was filmed, I asked George Lindsey (Goober) himself that very question back in 2006. He told me the ball field was filmed in the San Fernando Valley north of Beverly Hills. He didn't tell me the actual name of the ball field, but I do know it definitely was not on the 40 acres lot. As for Jeff's comment about not seeing a pole at Franklin Canyon where Mr. McBeevee gets into his truck, when I was there last year the wooden pole has been replaced with a metal one. Someone told me there was a big storm a couple of years earlier that snapped the wooden pole we see on the show, so they replaced it with a metal one. I got a picture of it while there. I tried to find where Andy met Mr. McBeevee as he climbed down the tree, but couldn't. Franklin Canyon is a TAGS fan's heaven since trained noticers can walk/see/touch the very places we see on so many episodes. Mr. Schwamp on Perry Mason
I think this has come up before, but I was thrilled to see our beloved Mr. Schwamp on an episode of "Perry Mason" this past Friday night. It was titled "The Case of the Drowsy Mosquito" from season 7 episode 3 filmed in 1963. Mr. Schwamp is clearly seen leaning against a piano in the back of the saloon next to the door where they were holding court. You can see a picture on www.imdb.com with him in the background behind Perry and Della. Other TAGS alumni in that episode include Arthur Hunnicutt (Mr. Wakefield) Clinton Sundberg (Farley Upchurch in "Opie's Most Unforgettable Character" episode) Woodrow Parfrey (two episodes of "Mayberry, RFD") That Mr. Schwamp sure is a talker Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Wary Willie on Perry Mason
I saw Wary Willie the hobo who befriended Opie and his merry men in the woods on Perry Mason last night. I don't remember the episode name, but Wary was all dressed up in a suit. I guess that was before his leg went game and couldn't work anymore. Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Joe's questions
Here's my theory in answering Joe's questions about where "Opie Steps Up in Class" and "Andy's Trip to Raleigh" were filmed. They definitely were not filmed on the 40 acres lot. They scouted out locations around Los Angeles and used an existing house for the exterior scene for the Hollander's house in Walnut Hills. Note the palm trees near the driveway. Not many palm trees in NC. Yes, I would love to know the location of the Hollanders' house just to see it again. Now the swimming pool could have been shot at any house with a pool. It could have been the same house, but not necessarily. There are a bajillion home pools in LA. That fox thing was just a theory. What's your theory? "Mayberry Man" movie like TAGS
In response to Holland's post yesterday about the "Mayberry Man" movie being similar to the "Man in a Hurry" episode on TAGS, yes, I see the similarities, but I think it is even more similar to "Bailey's Bad Boy" episode on TAGS. In that episode bad boy Ron Bailey is a cocky kid who broke the law in Mayberry and doesn't want to be held accountable or take responsibility for his actions. By the end of the episode he sees the value of standing on his own two feet, seeing Andy's wisdom and becomes a better person for it. That's my theory anyway. Clara Edwards on Petticoat Junction
I just saw Clara Edwards (Hope Summers) on season 3 episode 12 of "Petticoat Junction." She almost married Uncle Joe Carson ("Goldbrick" Henry Wheeler on TAGS). Now that would have been an interesting couple! Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Barney in WW2
Barney could have graduated from high school in May 1945, immediately volunteered and served until the war ended in Sept. 1945. Similar for Andy since he said he served in France during the war. As Clara once said, "It's possible." Mr. Schwamp > "Tonight the episode:? "Class Reunion of '45".? If Barney graduated in 1945 > how?? > could he have served in the Army in WWII???GabeBoca Raton, FL" ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Re: Photo Identification
Wow! Great find, Jeff! I have never seen that photo of Andy and Barney in front of that newspaper stand. I can't recall ever seeing it in any episode. I'm eager to hear if anyone else knows. The link you provided was also very interesting. I learned some new things about the show. In particular, I had no idea Jim Nabors and Frances Bavier loved going antiquing together. photo identification
I watched the entire uncut episode "The Arrest of the Fun Girls" and that photo of Andy and Barney in front of the newsstand with the racing forms was not there. photo
Yes, I saw where the newsstand is about 4:59 in "The Arrest of the Fun Girls" episode. I was looking for the actual scene where Andy and Barney were standing in front of it. That's why I missed it earlier. Like Margaret said, it must have been a publicity shot or perhaps the script changed to where Andy talks to Barney in the street instead of in front of the newsstand after they initially filmed it in front of the newsstand. Perhaps Andy saw how noticeable the "Racing Forms" was if they talked in front of the newsstand, so he moved the scene out into the street. Mystery solved! Emma Brand sighting
I was excited to see our very own Emma Brand (Cheerio Meredith) on season 1 episode 4 of "Petticoat Junction". TAGS J. Howard Jackson (Roy Roberts) asked her for (wouldn't you know it) a dime so he could make a phone call. She found a dime to give him. I'll bet that was the very dime she was going to use to buy her blue pills from Walker's Pharmacy. I sure hope she didn't get sick from not having her pills. Shame on Mr. Jackson for taking her pill money. There were four TAGS alum on that episode: Frank Cady (Sam Drucker on "Petticoat Junction" and Farley Upchurch on TAGS) Roy Roberts (J. Howard Jackson on TAGS) Cheerio Meredith (Emma Brand) Edgar Buchanan (Henry Wheeler on TAGS) That sure made me smile and nod. Aunt Bee's plane
I'm glad we're discussing Aunt Bee's plane that she soloed in. I and a few other hardcore TAGS fans had the ultra-rare privilege of getting to see and sit in this very plane N5955B back in 2019 on our trip to California. According to the owner who had owned it since the 1970s, we were the first and only TAGS fans to actually see and get in the plane since he owned it. It was absolutely thrilling to sit in the very seat Aunt Bee sat in during the filming of that episode. The owner even let us pull some of the knobs and instruments that she pulled during filming. The owner also gave me a one-of-a-kind hat with "N5955B" on it. It was BIG, real BIG! Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Aunt Bee and Rock Hudson
I happened to watch some of the old Western movie "Horizons West" (1960) last night. Aunt Bee (Frances Bavier) played the mother of a young Rock Hudson! This is interesting because in the TAGS episode "Mayberry Goes Hollywood" Andy asks Aunt Bee if Rock Hudson was her favorite actor. Of course she agreed since she once played his mother! In addition to Aunt Bee, Nurse Mary Simpson (Julie Adams) played the wife of the bad guy (Raymond Burr / a.k.a. Perry Mason). A young Dennis Weaver (Chester on "Gunsmoke") was also on it. And you know what? He didn't walk like Chester. I'm sure Goober was disappointed. Mr. Schwamp ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
