[libreoffice-website] Re: Banner for switching languages on the LibreOffice website

2019-12-12 Thread Jean Spiteri
Discussion has calmed now but I though I would clarify that the banner
already changes the first link depending on the User Agent and the language
specified in it. So one may have Italiano, the other English.

The comment about the More link being far to the right is a good suggestion
and can be fixed easily.

The languages chosen were the ones with the biggest number of global
speakers originally but was later adjusted to fit better the community size.
Nonetheless, any better criteria can be discussed.

The mobile problem, screenshots uploaded to TDF nextcloud and shared here
would help a lot.

If there are some languages that are not being auto-detected, feel free to
suggest it.

[libreoffice-website] Adding the 'Maps' feature to the main site

2019-08-28 Thread Jean Spiteri
*Summary*

I have been working on a new feature for the LibreOffice website, Maps. In
short, this feature consists of adding a new page type that is made up of a
map on which markers can be placed. These markers will include some
information. This work has been carried out with the support of other
members of the community. Now that it is working and has been tested quite a
bit, I am asking someone from the Infra team to direct me to what should I
do to have this feature installed on the main website.

*Long Version *

Some months ago, I was asked to resume work on a module I had been working
on that aimed to create a Contributor Maps type page. Since quite a lot of
time passed from that, I thought that it would be better to rewrite the
whole module from scratch. The result is now working and it is time to
transfer this feature from the newdesign.libreoffice.org site (where it is
being tested at https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/community/contributor-map
and https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/events-map) to the main
libreoffice.org website.

This module, when installed, enables site editors to create pages based on a
new type "Contributor Maps". This type of page allows for introductory text
and then a map is placed underneath. Markers can be placed on the map by
both website visitors and site editors, depending on the page setting.
Markers will have a number of details attached to them, such as name,
picture, areas, location and URL for more information. This type of page can
be used both for a map that holds entries such as community members (as in
https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/community/contributor-map) or as an event
map (as seen in https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/events-map). Entries can
either expire after 1 year (which can be renewable - ideal for listing
community members) or have an expiry date set by the user (ideal for events
maps). Registration need to be validated through a confirmation email.
Entries can edited, renewed and deleted.

This work has been on the newdesign site for quite some time and has been
tested by some helpful members of the community. Of course, anyone
interested in helping with testing can do so from the URLs mentioned above.
However, now that this feature seems to be working well, I think that it can
be copied over to the main site. Unfortunately, I don't have any access to
the code of that site. Thus, I need someone from the Infra team to direct me
on how I could get this feature added to the main site.

Thank you for reading and I hope to have a reply soon. And, of course, any
feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Try registering from

should load well from that URL. Probably the problem is happening because
the same site is being served at two URLs but Captcha is checking for one of
them.

This is a mteer of opinion. I would prefer to have more feedback before
changing
the code. Anyway, it could also be to be allow changes by the CMS admin.

Yes, it is fixable and it has been fixed! I have changed the URL of that
entry to the
blog post's address. I have also set the Picture URL as that of the blog's
TDF logo
since I do not know what was your intention there. I have done the changes
through
editing from the CMS. The issue was a too short URL field.

Of course, it's open for testing. I intend to do some other work
specifically around the
map's sizing and zoom and other UX stuff so any special UX feedback would
be welcome.
For example, is the entry popup good or should the picture be on the left
and text on the
right (ID card style)? Also picture should be square or rectangle? That
sort of things.

I have added more information at the field name. This is temporary. In the
future, the extra bits should be replaced by a tooltip.

William Gathoye wrote
> 2. The date is the date until which we want to appear, not the date

The Date field is intended for the events map type of map. As explained
better below, the test map is accommodating 2 scenarios, contributor and
events map. When you see it in the aspect of an events map, Date makes
sense. When in contributors "mode", Date will not be visible but will be set
automatically to 1 year from verification (to be extended by the user
through email if he wants).

William Gathoye wrote

Thanks for the suggestion. This should now be fixed.

William Gathoye wrote
> 4. There is no GDPR indication about how the email address will  be

I have added more information about this. As I've said before, the text will
find its way in a tool tip in a future development.

William Gathoye wrote
> 5. Anyone with the email address can edit the POI even if the POI

I assume that you have not accessed the full editing experience due to the
bug you mentioned below. When you enter the email address to request edit,
you get sent an email with a URL. Only from that URL will you be able to
edit your entry. That's another reason why an email address is required.

William Gathoye wrote
> 6. Editing didn't work for me. It leads to a 404 page.

This should now be fixed. It was the result of an "unrefreshed" cache on the
server. I have rechecked both editing scenarios and they should work.

William Gathoye wrote
> 7. When I have several locations added. Each of them is listed under
> the same name and I don't know which one I'm editing.

Please remember that the current page is a little outside of the norm to
test the most things possible. In reality, the map can be used both as a
Contributor Maps and also Events Map. Thus, while what you say is strictly
true, the ability to have multiple listings for one email address is
expected to be used for events which do not have the same name normally.

William Gathoye wrote
> 8. Please remove the float:left statement in the #ContributorMap and

Thanks for the idea. I have applied it.

William Gathoye wrote
> 9. Buttons need to be properly positioned. Call to action "Add" at the

> 10. Avoid the popup.

While saying that I have no particular Design and UX experience, I think
these two are subjective. Thus, I would like to have more feedback about
them.

William Gathoye wrote
> 11. When the website will be deployed, with all the contributors we

I think having a full map would be the best case scenario and that a full
map would be a benefit if it is loaded at first load so I don't agree with
this.

[libreoffice-website] Call for Feedback - Maps

2019-05-29 Thread Jean Spiteri
As a test, a new module has been uploaded to the newdesign.libreoffice.org
website adding a new Maps feature. This feature gives the possibility of
creating a page holding a map where users (without requiring any access to
the CMS) can add an entry to the map. Such a map can be used for various
uses, such as to show events, show the global nature of contributors, etc.

It would be highly appreciated if anyone who wants to checkout
https://newdesign.libreoffice.org/community/maps and tests the page. Of
course, any feedback is appreciated as well as any bug reports. Please send
these to the website@ list to make it easier collecting such feedback.

Just a couple of notes,

   - entries can be added, edited and deleted,
   - the 'Date' field requires input in the form 2019-05-29,
   - the date inputted will be used as an expiry date meaning that the
entry will not be visible after that date,
   - email address have to be confirmed before the entry is visible.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-website] Changes to the 'Improve It' page structure

2019-04-18 Thread Jean Spiteri
As requested in ticket 2650 on Redmine (for NextCloud) <
https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/2650>, I have archived the
two redirects which were added to the submenu in
https://www.libreoffice.org/community/get-involved/ linking to 'Nextcloud'
and 'Pads'.

In my opinion, these weren't very helpful since they just showed a landing
page to the user but no guidance on how to start.

However, if anyone wants them back, please ask so.

Re: [libreoffice-website] Re: Home files on SilverStripe

2019-03-19 Thread Jean Spiteri
Good to know that.

Regarding the redirect error, I don't know what could make it. Probably
it's due to the way the sites are implemented (each subdomain is separate
from the www but runs the same basic code - so probably when ?flush=all is
run it affects all subdomains).

Hi, a possible solution to fix it might be to do the following

1. Rename /home/ to something else
2. Them rename /home-2/ to /home/

This might work. I've tried it on newdesign.libreoffice.org and it worked. I
hope it works on your end as well.

[libreoffice-website] Fwd: Changes to LibreOffice website

2018-09-11 Thread Jean Spiteri
I've already sent this email to hostmaster@. However, on suggestion from
floeff, I'm posting to the mailing list, to have the widest reach possible
since probably TDF staff have more urgent tasks to do.

---

I am sending this email to ask the Infra to review 2 suggestions I have for
the LibreOffice website. These suggestions need to be applied in the code
base and thus require the support of an administrator. Feel free to reply
back with any feedback or if there is anything I have missed. Both of these
suggestions can be seen in action at newdesign.libreoffice.org. Thank you
in advance.

*1. Slight darkening of carousel background in home page (Redmine Task 2589
)*
As can be read in the ticket, the white text can sometimes be less visible
because of insufficient contrast with the background. The proposed change
applies a slightly darker background to make the text more visible.

The change can be applied by adding the following lines to .carousel_caption
in themes/libreofficenew/css/main.css

background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.2);
padding-left: 20px;
padding-right: 20px;
padding-bottom: 20px;

and removing

background-color: transparent;

*2. Inform users through email of publications carried out during the last
24 hours (Redmine Task 901
)*
This proposal adds 4 files (small) which add the functionality of informing
CMS users who opt-in to receive an email every 24 hours informing them of
the latest published changes to the site's changes. To enable this
functionality, the following files need to be added to the mysite/code/
folder

   - PublicationNotificationSubscription.php

   - PublicationNotificationSubscriptionTask.php

   - PublicationNotificationSubscriptionAdmin.php

In addition to those, the following file needs to be added to
mysite/templates/

   - PublicationNotificationSubscription.ss

The file contents can be viewed by clicking the links in their names which
will lead to the Nextcloud reserved for TDF purposes. Once those files are
in place, a cron job needs to be established to run
PublicationNotificationSubscriptionTask.php every 24 hours.

I would also like to report that there's an issue in the The Document
Foundation Blog. In the "Subscribe to Blog Posts" form in the sidebar, the
checkbox field label should link to The Document Foundation's Privacy
Policy. However, the link's href attribute has been left empty and thus it
is not leading to the Privacy Policy page but just opening the same page in
a new tab.

Thank you for all your work and dedication.

No, they required only clicking "Publish" to do so I did that. After doing
that, I re-read the text and carried out some changes. It would be nice if
you could read the new pages to make sure grammar is correct (as far as I
know it is but you know grammar more, probably).

I have also changed the download link in the 'LibreOffice Viewer for
Android' page to point users intending to download the plain apk to v14/15
(it was leading to v8/9 which will likely be less developed than the
latest). If someone could download the apk and confirm that the links works
well, it would be very nice.

I have also set the primary "Download LibreOffice Viewer for Android" button
to take the whole of the "page" (excluding the sidebar) and adjusted the
button text to align to the button's center.

Finally, I have changed the video iframe to take up 90% of the "page" width
while keeping it to the same height as it was. It still aligns itself to the
center of the page.

I have published the changes I did as soon as I finished them. Of course,
those who access to the CMS can use the History tab to see them in more
detail. Again, all feedback is welcome.

[libreoffice-website] Re: Multilingual LibreOffice website

2018-08-21 Thread Jean Spiteri
Some time passed and after some further thought, I remembered that there are
other limitations which I forgot about. As far as I know, using the normal
SilverStripe way it is not possible to have the banner in a different
language than the rest of the site. So, if you're on www.libreoffice.org,
the banner has to be in English (US) for now at least. Thus, there's a new
version that is being used to ask for feedback. The new banner has the
changed text like this

"The community provides a version of the LibreOffice website in Italiano.
Other languages."

The link to the Italian site wil be found in the "Italiano" part of the text
(Italiano = native name of the foreign language).

It would be nice if contributors re-check the new banner and give their
comments.

Oh yeah should have got that while reading it so sorry for that. Now that
I'm thinking about it, even though it probably isn't the best way (currently
the name is fed through a variable, what would be the drawbacks of making
the comunity name translatable as the rest of the string? That would avoid
over complicating everything due to gender and other reasons.

The code has been updated to comply with the feedback given on this thread.
It is desirable that everyone re-visits newdesign.libreoffice.org to re-test
that it works well. Most of the changes done are, however, under the hood
and should not be seen, as long as they do not include a regression.

The changes done, for the sake of completeness, are

* The community name (X in The X community) does not include the
Region/Country in most cases. Thus, for example, when before it was " The
Italian (Italy) community", it is "The Italian community". This has been
done in such a way to still allow dialects to be distinguished. (pt-BR will
still have Brazil in the community name).

* The community name (ex. Italian) is now translated in the native language.
Thus, you'll see "The ITALIANO community".

* The change above is to prepare for when the string will be translated. The
text included in the banner is now translatable. However, input from a TDF
admin is still required to upload the strings to Pootle to have them
transalted by the community.

Again, any further feedback is welcome. Thank you.

OK, if the majority think that the banner should be translated, it may be
doable.

The banner will not have any effect on that. I'm not a SEO expert so it
could be that the Welsh site's PageRank is lower than the official one.

I'm totally open for suggestions so if you think that a translated line is
needed, I'll check the possibilities of having it like that. Do you think
that changing 'here' to 'it.libreoffice.org' would motivate the person to
click on it (since there's IT in there). Or maybe link the text 'Italian

That would require an effort to translate by numerous communities. However,
I (personally) would prefer having text in English as the rest of the text.
That is, if you mean the actual language of the text and not the community
name found in the sentence.

It could be good but I think that actually showing the user that there IS a
localisation rather than there MIGHT BE is a little more welcoming. People
from small languages might be more inclined to not consider it because there
language is small.

Yes, it pushes it down by a little bit (depending on the screen resolution).
The Dismiss button but to have it "stick", it would require a cookie and
after discussing with cloph, he did not want to set a cookie for it, in
light of recent data protection legislation.

cloph also said that flags need to be avoided as sophi said. The drop down
list is in a way replaced by the 'Other languages' link which leads you to
the page where all of them are listed.

[libreoffice-website] Changes to the Download pages

2018-08-13 Thread Jean Spiteri
I've already posted this on other mailing lists and feedback was positive
thus I'm posting it here as well.

I have done some work on the LibreOffice website in an effort to work on
https://redmine.documentfoundation.org/issues/2155. At the moment, the work
has been saved as draft. Thus, it's not visible to users, except those who
have an account in SilverStripe.

My work can be divided in three tasks

1.Created a new page named "LibreOffice Impress Remote" and put it as a
child of the Download. Thus, it can be seen in the Download menu as well.
2.I have renamed the "Android and iOS" page to "LibreOffice Viewer for
Android".
3.I have removed the Impress Remote download links from that page and
changed the text to lead to the new page.

I am looking forward for feedback. If this is positive, the changes could be
published soon. Thank you.

[libreoffice-website] Multilingual LibreOffice website

2018-08-13 Thread Jean Spiteri
Thanks to the huge international community around The Document Foundation,
numerous volunteers (and non-) work to maintain a version of the LibreOffice
website in their own language. Especially, when these are kept up-to-date,
these versions should be promoted, maybe not as substitutes for the official
English website but as local complementary resources. It could also be that,
for a user, knowing that there are other people talking his own language in
the community might lead him to more motivation than seeing the community as
a group of English-speaking individuals. This consideration is especially
valid as work is being carried out to have more volunteers on board.

Thus, to promote the different versions of the LibreOffice website better,
it is being proposed to add a small notification bar on top of the menu to
hint the user about the availability of a local version of the website. This
mailing post is being submitted to call for feedback about this addition to
the LibreOffice website before asking administrators to implement it on the
official website.

If you want to see what is the output of the proposal, please visit
newdesign.libreoffice.org. On top of the green menu bar, there should be a
black banner with some text on it. The actual proposal is that the banner is
seen only by those who have set a primary language other than English (US)
in their browser. However, to allow testing, this has been overridden to
show up always. (Please note that those who have English (US) set as their
browser's primary language will see incomplete text - This is expected.)

As a call to action, the community is being asked to give its feedback about
the proposal. Feel free to comment about the output or report any bugs you
might encounter.

Thank you.

[libreoffice-website] Information about Download banner on official website

Redmine 2097 is
assigned to me at the moment and I've been trying to do the work needed for
the task. I've been familiarising myself with the task requirements and code
and got a couple of questions that I duly posted on the Redmine issue

any reply. Thus, I'm posting here to get the attention of the Website team
who could maybe help here. For convenience's sake I'm quotign the questions
here

(this = the Download Now banner)

(cookie thing = the suggestion that a cookie should be saved on the user's
browser store that shows the banner once per user)

[libreoffice-website] Bugzilla Code Repository

2017-07-27 Thread Jean Spiteri
I would like to ask some questions regarding the Bugzilla code available on
the server and the repository itself. I am asking in relation of two
specific issues that can be found in Redmine. These are issue 2187
   and issue 2150
  .

I would like to ask whether the Gerrit repo is up to date with all the
changes done to the server. Specifically, I mean the code that has been
added to Bugzilla to add the crashreporter extra field. I've tried to search
for it but could not find any sign of it. Have I missed it or has it not
been uploaded to the repo?

The second thing I would like is whether the Gerrit patch 34523
   has been installed on the
Bugzilla server, whether the official or the test server. I tried to check
it but could not find any sign of this being online so I may be missing
something here as well.

One final thing, I think that recently a Git hook has been uploaded to the
Bugzilla server to aid docs generation. Can this be uploaded on the repo as
well or not?

Thank you for reading.

The idea, as the ticket says, is that if you have your browser language set

italian version of this site is available at it.libreoffice.org". The

language or specific ones.

[libreoffice-website] Reminder about localised website

of the LibreOffice website is included on top of libreoffice.org. More
details can be found in the ticket available at

think about this? Also, should all localised versions be mentioned or only
those that have specific criteria(for example new design ones)?

[libreoffice-website] Re: volunteer work lost?

2014-09-26 Thread Jean Spiteri
Cor, that happened because the German localisation team upgraded to the new
design template. If you need to use that page, you can try:
http://mt.libreoffice.org/features/why-libreoffice/?SubsiteID=3
http://mt.libreoffice.org/features/why-libreoffice/?SubsiteID=3 .
However, I would recommend that if that info is not in the new site, a new
home is found for it because this function should be temporary.

 one
offers a simple summary table and big green download button. Very user
friendly. The new LO site does no have enough content yet to get a clear
impression of how it has improved.

In terms of user feedback/content, the AOO page provides a lot more
 opportunities:
 1) There's a score from 1-5 stars

This is similar to , but provides more granularity, than an up/down vote.

 2) Compatible with OpenOffice 4: Yes

We don't have any uploaded files on the extension test site to compare...

 3) User feedback: Compatible with OpenOffice 4.x? (up/down votes as
 percentage)

This kind of feedback is very useful. Even better would be a bar
chart/heatmap corresponding to each version of an extension. There
could be a slot for each version of LibreOffice (we'd only display LO
 versions that have been tested).

We could perhaps take a cue from WineHQ's visualization:
 https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=applicationiId=648

From a support point of view I feel it would also be good to enforce
 visible
contact details for extension publishers. At present it can be difficult
 to
track down the author of an extension. I often find myself in forum
 answers
stating (try to) contact the extension author without being able to
 offer
much in the way of further assistance.

Andreas -- Could this requirement be tied to the creation of an
 account with extension-publishing powers?

Ideally we'd give the user an option of providing an email address or
website url. We'd want to include some language suggesting that we
might deprecate or disable the pages of publishers/extensions that
don't have an active support mechanism.

believe that we could implement OpenID as part of the SSO as well. I'm not

with MediaWiki conversion. I think that this needs some more concrete
details. Maybe we can have a chat will all those involved? Also Philippe, I
thought a MySQL database would be enough for this. What do you suggest for
holding data?

[libreoffice-website] TDF Accounts

2014-07-21 Thread Jean Spiteri
I am writing this post to inform the community I am interested in taking over
a number of Redmine issues which relate to a uniting of the present
different user systems used by each TDF service. I did some research and
came up with a solution to either use an Single Sign-on system (SSO) or use
OpenID to handle the different accounts with the ultimate aim to reduce the
burden which comes from having an additional user account (needing to
remember credentials, etc.). I thought that I would ask for the opinion of
the community to decide whether we go down the OpenID or the SSO route.
Personally, I prefer the SSO route, because of the true one account part,
but I am listing advantages and disadvantages for each approach.

*Advantages of SSO*
- One set of user credentials to remember
- One admin interface

*Disadvantages of SSO*
- Dependence of one service to access all others
- If an account is hacked, all services will be vulnerable
- Might take longer to develop since a lot of touching code and research
has to be done

*Advantages of OpenID*
- Some services have out-of-the-box support
- Accounts might be used in other sites

*Disadvantages of OpenID*
- Most likely will have to depend on a library to provide OpenIDs
- Some services might still need registration after OpenID to complete the
profile

I think there might be other advantages and disadvantages so if anyone
technical can add to the discussion, please do. I am interested in doing
this if we go the SSO way and may try to do it if we go the OpenID way. Just
to note, that by OpenID I mean providing OpenID ourselves. This topic is
just for discussion purposes so no formal decisions should be taken on this.
I will also try to talk with other persons more connected with Infra to
advice throughout the process. I think a week should be enough to decide
about this and I would then give further details about the implementation.
Of course any help is accepted, just tell me.

(i.e. use a domain that is still served by the old silverstripe

2014-04-02 Thread Jean Spiteri
First of all, I always believed that the TDF is an open foundation and
therefore CRITICISM SHOULD ALWAYS BE WELCOME because that is what makes the
project improves. Imagine, if someone found a bug and did not report it
because someone just decided that those who criticizes should not do it.
Secondly, I also think that the design could be changed by, maybe, not
redirect to the full Donate page but add a small widget in the page that
invites users to donate.

About too late - well, Charles indeed has a point. At some stage, we
must come to an end for the first website round, otherwise we will never
release it. So, unless something really critical comes up, I'd love to
keep as is indeed, and then have the community improve it afterwards.

know how to read since I never went to a Microsoft or Google website and saw
a paragraph which a 5 year-old would manage to do better.

 hi Jean,

 Sorry for my slow responses.

Do you work in Windows, Linux or Mac? I only ever tried in Linux. But
you need the packages xsltproc, tidy, make, perl and curl afaik. But
many linux-distro's already have perl and curl.
When you have all that installed then it should work with a simple make
all in the root of the project.
After the make open de file bug/bugs.html?skin=login for the english BSA
in dev-mode (you can view the BSA but can't submit, and there is a
 dev-bar at the top)

If you are on another system the linux we should see what needs to be

[libreoffice-website] IRC Chat thorugh LibO website

2012-10-19 Thread Jean Spiteri
I have created a new page on the LibreOffice website to host a #libreoffice
IRC chat. All those who have rights for Silverstripe, they can review it
here https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/irc-help/?stage=Stage . Feel
free to update as you think is necessary.

[libreoffice-website] Re: improving our donation button

2012-09-24 Thread Jean Spiteri

should also include at least our document logo maybe hack it and add a
piggy bank (something meaning giving money) in the center of the logo. BTW,
I'm awful at designing too.
