Introduction

2022-08-11 Thread Tim Kitslaar
Hello!

My name is Tim Kitslaar, I'm a Red Hatter who recently moved into a
software engineering role on one of our web teams from our technical
documentation team, and alongside that change I've switched to running
Fedora 36 as my daily driver instead of the Mac I was previously running.

I have found it so much more enjoyable and productive, so I figured I'd
look for areas to contribute on Fedora where possible. I'll probably check
out the easyfix items first and then go from there!

Thanks,

2021-06-20 Thread Gleb Vassiljev
Hello!

I've been following this mailing list for some time already.
I contribute some small changes in Docs when I can.

I'm a biologist but I had completed web dev internship in a small local company
a couple of years ago. For the most part I'm self learned even though I have
studied one web design course in community college equivalent more than a
decade ago.

Not listing any programming languages since I'm not a programmer, but I prefer
Sass and Gulp toolchain as well as Pug (https://pugjs.org) to work on HTML
designs.

Since the FedoraWeb is to be redesigned soon, I would like to know how to get
involved in the redesign work.
Can I chime in on Taiga ?
https://teams.fedoraproject.org/project/fedora-websites-apps-team/timeline ?

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites/Join page doesn't tell me much. I will
try to be available in chat.

Introduction

2021-05-23 Thread Overload Overload
Hi everyone,

I would like to introduce myself to everyone here. I am a software engineer
with almost a decade of experience in web development.
My recent experience has been related to JavaScript and related libraries and
frameworks few key items of which are
1. ReactJs
2. Angular
3. NodeJS
4. MySQL
5. PostgreSQL
6. MongoDB

I have been a fan of Fedora for quite some time now and have been thinking
about contributing in some way, but it was only recently that I learned about
website contribution as an option. It was mostly because of my own mistake that
it took so long to find out about it.
I would like to contribute as much as possible and would really appreciate if
someone wouldn't mind showing me the ropes.

Thanks!

Introduction

2020-09-07 Thread Zlatko Duric

Hello everyone,

I'm sending a short intro of myself, as stated at the Fedora Project
wiki that I should do.

I'm Zlatko, I use Fedora as my primary OS at my laptop and my desktop
and I have been using it for quite some time so I've thought I could try
to help out the project that is doing so much for me.

I'm an experienced web technologies guy, and lately I have been working
mostly with JavaScript (Angular, React, Vue, and most of the frameworks
before that) and NodeJS. But I was also doing a lot of things on the
servers as well - from Nginx or Apache config, light RDBMS
maintenance/ops work and simmilar so I figured I could try to help in
the websites team here.

I also have been involved in some Java, Python projects, and as a purely
non-production excersize, with C, Go and well, many other languages.

I'm not a sysadmin but I also have experience in this department. You
could probably see some of this info at zlatko.dev site (relatively new
so still sparse) or at my LinkedIn profile (dunno how we go about
linking those but I'm fairly easy to look up for there). I'm currently
an "Lead IT Consultant" at msg systems ag, which doesn't tell you much
but I'm dealing mostly with web frontend work, coaching and architecture
there.

Anyway, my first Fedora was a Fedora Core 3 (or 4, was it?), ans since
then I've been using it on and off along with other OSes. I've also used
Mint, Arch, Ubuntu and other distros, I've dabbled even with FreeBSD.
I've also been using Windows at work, and my wife is on a macOS platform
so I'm also close to that system.

About Fedora 21, I've went back to it on my laptop, and since beginning
of this year, on my desktop machine. I've recently read an article on
Fedora Magazine and wanted to get in and help out where I can.

Now, funny anecdote time: I've signed-up on the Fedora project website
about 10 days ago, after I've read something on Fedora Magazine and
trying something at my computer and noticing an issue I'd like
addressed. But I had a glitch on sign up (couldn't change the temporary
password) and while waiting for that to resolve (and then to have the
time to write this email), I've forgotten what my issue was. So now I
don't know _exactly_ why I've joined, but I'll go look into "easyfix"
issues and see if there's something fun for me to look at and try to
help with.

Cool. The current Fedora websites framework is Flask, which is Python-based.
That's not on your list but I think from the breadth of experience you'll
have no problem picking it up quickly. See https://pagure.io/fedora-web/websites

That's excellent too. We could always use more documentation. In fact, one
of the things we really need right now is a "getting started with Fedora
websites" -- how to make changes, test them locally, and get them from that
local test to live.

2019-07-21 Thread Mikael Granberg

Hello!

My name is Mikael and I've just signed up for a Fedora account to be
able to contribute to the Fedora Websites Project for starters.

_About myself_
I'm a middle aged father of two beautiful kids. I live in the southern
parts of Sweden. Computers is my life. I've got my first computer in
1982 when I was seven years old. It was a Commodore 64 with a tape
station. My first programming experience was in C64 Basic. My first
favorite computer game was Miner 2049'er. Besides my interest in
computers I like to cook and spend time with my family and kids. I also
read (eBooks or audio-books) a lot. Right now I'm reading Factfullnes by
Dr Hans Rosling.

_My skills_
*Software Programming* - I know a lot of different programming
languages, but my strength lies within ADA, Pascal, Java, Microsoft c#
and Visual Basic.

*Web development* - I also know a lot of different web development
languages and systems. I started out with HTML, Lotus Script and Lotus
Domino Web server many years ago. But today my strengths lay within PHP,
HTML, JavaScript, AJAX, XSLT, JSON, etc. I also know a lot about web
server operations on both Linux and Windows. In my professional life I
have been working with both Apache and IIS.

*Databases* - I have came across a lot of databases during my life.
Within my professional life I have been working with Microsoft SQL
Server, MySQL, SAP Basis, SAP HANA and Oracle databases.

*Operations* - In my professional life I have been working both as a
software engineer but also as an operations engineer. So I know a bit
about both worlds and the many, so hard to solve struggles between "the
software developer" and "the server operator". I'm familiar with both
Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and a lot of other Linux flavors. I am also very
experienced on the Microsoft platforms.

*Everything else* - I'm very skilled when it comes to translating
content between English and Swedish. I have written a lot of support
articles for basically everything between how to connect your modem to a
telephone line and how to write surveillance scripts in Nagios. I like
to write technical articles.

That's the short version of me. Thank you all for your time.

Kind regards, Mikael Granberg

O hai, introduction

2019-01-13 Thread Thiago
Hey everyone, my name is Thiago, I'm from Brazil, and I hope I can make some
meaningful contributions to the Fedora Websites project.

I know HTML/CSS, JavaScript and some Python (w/ Flask), though I don't have any
professional experience yet. I'm here both to help and also to learn from
working with some of the more experienced hackers from the Fedora project
worldwide.

I already made two minor PRs, but I delayed my introduction until I knew I
would commit to contributing. Alright, I think that's it! See you guys around
on Pagure or elsewhere.___

Re: Introduction: JD Wilson

2018-09-15 Thread JD Wilson
Hey!

Sorry for the delay. I've been talking to the Infrastructure team for the
last couple of weeks and they got me started on an easy-fix ticket:
https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issue/5316

I did some testing of the proposed patch for that ticket and found some
cases where it wasn't quite right. I have a decent idea of what it's
missing but haven't had the time to sit down and work through it yet.
Hopefully soon!

Thanks,
JD

Hi!

I also have joined Fedora Project recently. As a fellow new community member I
would like to welcome you!
Being open source enthusiast I mainly used Debian/Ubuntu for over 12 years and
always felt a bit guilty not contributing to the Linux popularization. Mostly
it was that running "Debian Testing" didn't really fit into my workflow. Also
since at least a few years ago their system had some artificial hurdles that
kept me from contributing but I heard that it's been changing fast and I still
have great respect for the Deb camp.

I've been using Fedora for a couple of years on one machine without actually
realizing how powerful the system was and how friction free and encouraging the
community was to get the new people to share and contribute.

As I understand and I might be wrong, but you would need to go through
infra-teams on-boarding process
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/GettingStarted

My guess is that you should talk to them in IRC and mailing lists to be a part
of this.

Then maybe you could submit an issue or find anyone else who might be working
on it:
https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure/issues

It's great to see such experienced developers like you joining Fedora
community!

Introduction: JD Wilson

2018-09-02 Thread JD Wilson
Hello, world!

Who
My name is JD Wilson. I am in the USA, Eastern Time Zone. I am a database
developer/DBA with prior experience in both web and desktop development. My
main focus these days is SQL, though most of my past work experience has
been full stack web development. I've worked with the following web
languages: PHP, Java (Apache Wicket), Coldfusion, HTML, CSS,
Javascript/JQuery, Bootstrap, and Materialize CSS. I've played around with
NodeJS, Spring, React, and C#. My web skills are admittedly a bit rusty, so
I'll be best suited with some of the easier fixes.

What
I would like to contribute to the Fedora website development. Something I
immediately noticed while creating my account was the outdated look and
feel of the Fedora admin page (https://admin.fedoraproject.org/). I think
there are a lot of easy fixes to make that section of the site look more
modern, and to make the pages mobile-first. I'm assuming this area has
higher access rights since I did not get the code to it when following
these instructions (
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_fix_bugs_on_the_Fedora_Project_website).
I also realize that a redesign of the site like that would require
collaboration with the more senior members and would not be a
solo-decision. It's just something that I thought would be a fun area to
start contributing!

Why
I've wanted to contribute to Linux since I first began using it years ago,
I just never knew how. The openness of the Fedora project to volunteers is
what made me choose it over Ubuntu years ago. I knew that one day I would
be writing an email like this, and to be honest it feels weird that I'm
finally here. Time flies! I feel I am useful enough as a professional to
make a difference in the Fedora community. I love the idea of open source
software and I am ready to "walk the walk", to contribute to the success of
Fedora rather than just stand on the shoulders of others. I don't just want
to use Fedora, I want to help build it!

I can pretty easily contribute 2-4 hours a week to start, and I would be
willing to ramp it up as I get more involved with the team. My IRC handle
is wilsonj. I am still trying to figure out exactly how all of this works,
so I welcome any and all onboarding assistance.

Look forward to meeting you all,
JD

Introduction - Jaco Roux

2018-04-16 Thread Jaco Roux
Good day,

My name is *Jaco Roux*, 28 years old from South Africa and I am a Junior
PHP developer with exposure to JavaScript, HTML/CSS, MySQL, AJAX and
Natural/ADABAS. I love the challenge of coding and creating new ideas daily
and I am currently studying towards my National Diploma in IT.
Through my studies and work, I have been exposed to a lot of different
technologies and I am an active proponent of web development because of the
power it gives you to create scalable applications that can run on any
device.

I would like to start contributing because I want to help the Fedora
project and learn new things along the way by getting more exposure as my
skills improve.

I hope to make an impact and make some friends along the way.

Thank you all.

Hi Vedran,
Matthew is correct, we don't do localization, we do internationalization,
that means we produce the source files and push them to the translation
platform (Zanata).
Localization is done by the single localization teams and we pull the
translated strings to build the websites.
The .po files you see in our repo are outdated and used mostly just for
testing. Please don't make any changes on them.

If you want to join us, take a look on pagure [1] or follow the
instructions on the wiki [2]. For any doubts please ask, or join us on
#fedora-websites, even if you just want to say hello.

Hi Vedran, and welcome and thank you!

Most translations in Fedora are managed through Zanata. I think in this
case that's
https://fedora.zanata.org/project/view/fedora-web?dswid=-3457
. You can get more information on the Translations list

Introduction

2017-08-06 Thread Vedran Miletić
Hi,

I would like to join the Websites Project. I have an understanding of
CSS and HTML sufficient to reuse templates and frameworks such as
Bootstrap, but haven't really designed stuff myself. I'm fluent in both
Markdown and reStructuredText and enjoy editing documents written in
those languages. I'm familiar with how gettext-based localization works.

Today I noticed that getfedora.org is offered in localized version in
addition to the default one in English, and my goal is to provide the
Croatian localization. In the future I would also be interested in
helping with documentation issues like [1].

I already figured out that there is a .po file which I should edit [2]
(kudos for linking to Pagure at the bottom of getfedora.org). I presume
one should submit a pull request after that? Thanks in advance for any
response.

Regards,
Vedran

Welcome to Fedora :) The websites join page has some information on
getting our repo set up locally if you want to poke around our websites:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Websites/ShowUs

Our web apps are a little different; each is its own project. One that I
work on is called Fedora Hubs (it's Python & Flask):

http://pagure.io/fedora-hubs

If you are interested in Django, Hyperkitty is an upstream project we
contribute to and use in Fedora and its front-end is written in Django:

https://gitlab.com/mailman/hyperkitty

Take a look around at the different projects we have, and depending on
which one you want to work on maybe we can help you figure out a project
to work on!

Hi Lazaro,
apologies for this late replay, was a really long and busy weekend...
Nice you have interest in joining our team, we build our pages mainy with
HTML, CSS, some Python scripts and JS. Internationalization is done with
genshi, but this is easy to learn.
I guess you already followed our Join page [1] and arrived at point 5, so
now just go ahead and look if you like some of our open tickets. You should
also join us on #fedora-websites in freenode, some discussions are going on
there or you can also just say hello. If you need assistance or some
advises don't hesitate and ping me there or write to this ML again.
Hope to see you soon online.

Hi Ooyama,
Thanks for this report, you PR is ok, but you missed the 32 bit ISO. You
can make a new PR or just add another commit to your actual PR to get these
changes in.

About the websites team, let's talk a bit on IRC, you can also catch a
ticket and try to fix it in the meanwhile. We want to make sure you
understand the build process and are at least able to check why builds are
failing and where to make changes to fix them. I will try to guide you to
make this happen soon.

Ambassador, but that is likely down the road.

My focus on talking to people, would be exposing other people around my
age to Fedora and FOSS in general.

I have only made on contribution to the websites team thus far, just a
minor url bug in the documentation. But I hope to do more.

Thanks for your time reading, and I look forward to talking/working with
you all!

Cheers,

Hi Drew,
nice you are interested in helping us.

The best starting point would be our join page [1], where you should
follow the points step by step.
Python skills are welcome, because the sites are build with Html/CSS
and the Genshi framework
for internationalization.
It would be a good idea taking a look at the bootstrap grid [2],
because there are many divs and classes in our
source files.

Finally, to get started, you need:
* to clone our repo. See [3] and join the web FAS group.
* start working on tickets, see easyfix [4] at the beginning or our
Trac [5]. You can send your patches
there.

Please ask if you have any doubts, writing to the websites Mailing
List or on IRC channel #fedora-websites,
located on the freenode server.

Introduction: L235

2015-09-29 Thread L235 Wikipedia
Hi everyone,

I'm L235. I'm new to the Fedora Project, and I'm excited to be working with
the Website project. I am a Wikipedia editor – see
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:L235 (11000+ edits, see [A] below for
more info) – but other than that, I am basically new to the F/LOSS
community.

I can't say that I'll be especially active here, but I do plan on trying to
contribute. My experience with website development is low, but I will at
least be helping out on the wiki where possible, and maybe a bit of light
non-wiki work.

[A]: Here is my status on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects:

   - Currently 11000+ edits on the English Wikipedia (analysis
   ,
   see also global WMF edits
   ; this puts me
currently at #6250 on the all-time list of Wikipedians by number of edits

   );
   - By far, my most prominent role on the English Wikipedia is that of
Clerk of the Arbitration Committee, which is the highest community body on
the site with the authority to issue binding decisions (see info on the
   Committee
, info on the Clerks of the Committee
   );
   - On the English Wikipedia, I am also a "course online volunteer, file
mover, mass message sender, pending changes reviewer, rollbacker, template
   editor" (see official record

   );
   - Across the Wikimedia Foundation projects, I am also an administrator
   on Wikimania 2015 (see record

)
and an administrator and bureaucrat on Wikimania 2016 (see record

   );
   - I am also a maintainer and administrator of XTools
   , a set of very
commonly-used tools across the Wikimedia projects (see info page
   ).

Thanks,

Hi Eko,
if you've already running our pages locally you can start with some

You can find them on the easyfix page [1] or just look in our trac [2].

a little about me, I am not the basis of the information technology or a

Great, this will help you to understand a little bit our source files,
but there is nothing very difficult.
We don't use php as CMS based systems, but mainly Python (genshi),
html, css and JS.

If you have any doubts please ask and say hello on #fedora-websites on freenode.

Introduction

2013-03-06 Thread Matthew Dittmer
Hello,

I am interested learning more about web development by contributing to the
fpo website in my free time. I have very little experience with
development and would like to start with the easy fixes. Most of my
professional experience is working in IT call centers.

Thank you,

I am not sure. The wiki is by definition editable. And this specifications don't
have to be editable. By anyone.
I like having static pages.
This page goes exactly as the code of conduct did. It was on the wiki, and we
moved it to a static html page.

Patrick, do you need us to publish the content, or any other help?

Introduction and Patch for ticket #176

2013-01-27 Thread Nicholas Alonge

Hello!

My name is Nick and I'm a web and applications developer. I have about 3
years of experience developing websites and applications. I'm proficient
in Python, HTML5 and CSS. I also have experience in other areas,
primarily mobile(android) application development and Linux desktop
applications.
I've just recently started to get involved in the Fedora community and
I'm having a blast helping out so far. I'm especially interested in
joining the websites team.

Now that's out of the way, I'd like to submit a patch for ticket #176 -
Make 64-bit the default x86 download.
Per the ticket, I changed the side link First, download a Fedora iso
to point to the x86_64 iso to match the Download Now! button. I
decided not to re-arrange the other download pages to promote 64bit
first as I think that warrants some discussion first.

Thanks for letting me introduce myself and reviewing my patch. I look
forward to working more on the websites.
